VM Intercept root, then what? - Intercept General

this is for my girl friends phone and its stock right now and painfully slow so I convinced her to root but I'm used to seeing the ROM's for my phone so I'm not familiar with "what ROM will speed up her phone's response"? She only uses it for alot of texting, FB, and occasional calls. thanks!

Factory reset
I have an Intercept. And yes, it gets painfully slow. The problem is, for some reason, the ROM on the phone fills right up. Here is what I do. I bought a back up app.. MY BACKUP PRO.. $2.99 I think. I back up everything... and then do a factory reset. The phone runs fast... like new.... and then use the app to restore everything. Its a bit of a pain in the ass... but it works. I am sure its less of a pain in the ass than rooting.
I have a little checklist that I did if you are interested. Send me a PM if you want. But every time i reset the phone, it runs like brand new.

I recently picked up two VM Intercepts because, well, they were on sale and for $40 for the phones, it was hard to pass up. Not knowing anything much of the phone before I purchased, I was still surprised on how slow the phone responded at times.
Finally got tired of it and the first thing I did was check to see if the phone was compatible with any of the ROMs I had used previously. It wasn't. So I decided I had to at least try something.
The phone, first off, was a pain to root. I kept getting partial roots. Finally after Googling for a few hours I came across the InterceptRoot.APK and it worked like a charm. Has a built-in backup utility, too. After it finished rooting the phone I installed Titanium Backup and uninstalled the majority of the pre-installed Virgin Mobile Bloatware apps. The only two I have left are "Activate" and "My Account" -- obviously didn't remove any of the actual Android required apps, just the Virgin Mobile specifics. And yes, they were safe to remove, had no issues afterwards.
But man, after removing all the bloatware, the phone runs a good 35% faster. I'd say go for it.
I lost the link I downloaded the rooter at, but if you need it I can upload it and PM it to you.

You guys should check out the sdxdevelopers website. There's a lot more information about the VM Intercept there.

I would say to try using cuteromx, My daughters phone/my old phone, has it installed and using cm01 recovery along with the vampirefos kernel, it is working pretty smooth if i must say so myself.

1.5 -> 2.1 upgrade process?

I'm still running Fresh 1.1. I've been holding off on the upgrade to a 2.1 ROM since I use this phone daily for business, and CAN'T have a ROM that has things missing or broken, or that just has general annoyances that interfere with the usability of the phone. It looks like we finally have some 2.1 ROMs that really are "100%" (there were claims going back awhile ago, but they definitely were not "100%").
My question is: What is the exact upgrade process, and what is the impact of that process? There are tons of threads about these 2.1 ROMs, but none have detailed specific install steps and explain exactly what you're doing. The threads seem to be targeted towards those that have a "disposable" state of their phone, not those that need a consistent and reliable phone.
It seems to be consistent that these upgrades require a factory and dalvik cache wipe. What exactly does that do? I have ~20 apps installed from the market, and they're probably 50/50 paid and free. Will these disappear during the wipe/upgrade process? Will they auto-reinstall from the market? If not, what is the best way to back them up and restore them? What other data will I lose and need to restore after the wipe/upgrade? I'm ready to move to a 2.1 ROM, but can't risk losing data or spending a couple days rebuilding my phone back to a usable state.
cmccracken,
I have been running 2.1 based roms since the Eris leak and have been very satisfied and have come to the place that i am currently experiencing no problems, however, I would advise you to wait if you are using your phone for business because all current Sprint based 2.1 roms Damage, Flipz, Regaw, etc) have the potential to leave you with no audio (no audio in calls, rings, notifications). This is a random problem that is not affecting everyone but just know it could happen. Rethink this move until the devs here can fix the audio problem for sure.
Yowza, that's scary. It would be nice if ROM dev's would actually list known issues and remove bogus "100%" claims. Flakey audio on a phone for even a portion of users is NOT "100%" by any stretch of the imagination.
I'd still like to see an explanation of the upgrade process, and what the impact to apps and data is.
Well, for most people these roms are 100% (just not for a select few and no one knows why yet).
As for impact of data etc. If you upgrade to a 2.1 rom, you will loose everything. All apps will be deleted (although thy can be backed up with Titanium backup, an app on the Market)You can still use your paid apps. All themes will be deleted. All contacts will be deleted, though they will resync as long as you have them backed up through your Google acct. All saved texts and emails will be deleted. This will be a complete wipe and I would strongly advise you to try 2.1 if you were only using your phone for personal use, but business......

hello,
when you change firmware versions (1.5 to 2.1) you will need to wipe data. basically start over. everything on the sd card will stay (pictures, music, anything you've downloaded) but all apps and app data will be gone. never fear, your market history will be there still and any paid apps you don't need to pay again. even your free ones should still be in your download history. then after a while your contacts will get pushed from gmail and pretty much all you will need to set up is individual app settings/ custom ringtones/ custom sense setups.
you get used to it after a few times
EDIT: but yes if you use your "phone" a lot for calling you may experience the no-audio (i haven't...yet) and sometimes your phone will ring and then freeze up you won't be able to answer the call. that's irritating

first I use my phone to run 2 different businesses and have been running 2.1 since the first eris build with no problems. I would strongly suggest making the change as now we are building off of the actual sprint leaks everything works out of the box. and considering that from the way the 2.1 releases have been for the droid sprints "official" 2.1 will more than likely come in the form of an RUU anyways and you will lose everything. so why not make the switch now.
second yes there are some that have the sound problem but that seems to be the only issue if you use wither damage control or fresh 2.0d the new zen one still needs a fix for the market so that would not be the way for you to go if you dont want to fix it. also just so you know by your logic even the sprint 1.5 release could not be considered "100%" as even it had its bugs and there are people that have issues. you have to understand that we basically have computers in our pockets and with that comes some bugs. hell even the market leader in personal comp OS's (microsoft) just sometimes does not work right on some peoples comps. This is the reality that we live with in a world of tech. in the world of software NOTHING is EVER gaurented to work for 100% of the people 100% of the time. if you can find a company that pulls that off let me know so that I can buy stock. lol
as far as the upgrade process goes it is pretty much the same as when you flashed fresh 1.1 download the zip, put it on the root of your sd card, boot into recovery, choose the wipe option and then choose wipe data/factory rest and wipe dalvick cache, go to the option flash zip from sd, choose the proper file, flash, reboot, enter info, done.
1.5 doesn't work 100% either by our standards. Flipz 1.1 is a step in the right direction, but the underlying version of the OS is flawed.
2.1 makes the phone work better, period. Ive tried almost every ROM around for this thing, and I'd have to say the latest Flipz offerings are pretty spot on. I dont have anything not working at this point. Sure there are some minor annoyances, but nothing deal-breaking. Plus when you get used to the process, its easy to update to a new rom or figure it out and patch yourself if you DO find a problem.
Sure there are some having odd issues, but their numbers are low (or theyre not posting) and every problem ive been able to either
A)try wiping and reflashing more than once
B)go back to my old install via backup/recovery (nandroid...recovery image)
The benefits of 2.1 far outweigh the very minor bugs ive encountered . Just getting rid of the laggy moments sold me on the 2.1 v 1.5.
BTW When is a device ever at 100% working? Ive never seen it.

I'm done with my N1. Back to WinMo for me.

This is not a troll posting. I swear...
I've had the AT&T flavored Nexus One since the day it was announced and I just can't suffer with it anymore. I'm running stock FRF91 with an unlocked bootloader. The only reason I unlocked the bootloader was so I could root and uninstall the apps that drained my battery or sucked resources that I never used - Twitter, Amazon-MP3, Genie-Widget, etc.
Pre-Froyo, it seemed pretty stable but the OS was very immature. Some things were just not well thought out. Activesync for example.
Post-Froyo: Turn on GPS, reboot. Talk on the phone for a long period of time, reboot. Charge the phone, reboot. Use Bluetooth, reboot. GPS is 100% useless now as after just a few minutes of use, the phone gets hot and reboots the phone. Hell, leave the phone in the sun in your car and it gets hot and reboots. Froyo offers some new features but some areas of the OS are still neglected and way behind where they should be. Can't move emails to a folder? Seriously? Can't undelete an email you accidentally deleted? That's just stupid. And there are a few other things that Windows Mobile had right for the last 10 years.
Yesterday alone, my phone rebooted several dozen times because I was trying to find a location with GPS and I was completely turned around with no idea where I was. I finally had to power off the phone, leave it off, and go ask someone at a gas station for directions. The phone reboots as soon as it gets hot and it appears everything makes the phone get hot.
Rip on Windows Mobile all you want, but I never once had a Windows Mobile device reboot on me and not do what it normally does. I'll throw CM6 on my N1 when it becomes final to see if things get better and I'll thrown on Gingerbread when that finally drops, but unless one of those solves the constant reboot issue, I'm done with Android. I've kept up with the Google forums and many, many, many people have the same issues I have so my N1 is obviously not an isolated case.
There are a lot of things I do like about Android so I'm not bashing Android. I like Android enough that if my phone didn't reboot constantly it'd be my primary platform moving forward.

I agree, the only time my phone gets hot is when I leave it in my landscaping truck while I'm mowing, but I think any phone would have problems when it's 112 degrees outside and probably 140 in the truck.
Sounds like a bad phone. The only time my N1 rebooted was when I had an experimental rom on it.
Sounds like something is just borked, I use my phone all day it only reboots because I want to go into recovery.
Are yur using custom recovery? Wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
Same as the above poster, mine never rebooted spontaneously even when hitting over 40C degrees. Only does so when I'm running some cutting-edge alpha kernels/ROMs, and then very rarely.
I was thinking it was specific to my device as well. I then googled "Nexus One overheating" and was overwhelmed by the number of people with the same issue. I also own over a dozen HTC devices, I've had ZERO problems with any of them. I've wiped my cache quite a few times. I've even wiped the phone and started fresh.
I've googled every specific issue I have had and found many others complaining about the same thing. Overheating/locking up the device when charging overnight - check. Rebooting/overheating when using GPS - check.
Lately, I've been uninstalling anything that runs in the background that isn't an essential part of the OS. Makes no difference. When I first got my N1, I used the GPS and Car Home app to drive an 8 hour trip. Not a single problem. The very first time I tried to use Car Home after going to Froyo it rebooted after just a few minutes and it's been that way since. I found MANY posts that confirmed this on Google's forums.
Personally, I think my device is fine. I suppose it's always possible that an app is causing the reboots. For example, the Weather Channel app is always running and that's not the most beautifully coded app I've ever seen...
Any suggestions, keep 'em coming. I'm not thrilled with Windows Mobile 7 yet.

By the sound of it, it's not an app. The phone should be able to take a good amount of heat and not reboot - the only time I got it to reboot was under direct sunlight in a car, it was probably hitting 50 degrees Celsius. If yours reboots every time you do anything - it's time to nandroid, take out the battery and clean the battery contacts really well (on the battery and the phone, using alcohol), flash a bone stock FRF91 or something really close to it, try to repeat the things that made it reboot (shouldn't be very difficult), and if the reboots continue - then I'm sorry, but you have a lemon. And if they don't - change to your favorite ROM and start incrementally installing stuff in small packs, until your testing shows reboots again. Defining anything other than Google account (like Exchange account) is also considered "installing something".
E-Mail quirks are taken care of by E-Mail clients. Exchange server push might be draining the hell out of your battery and heating your phone, check the relevant thread. I really hope you find the problem in SW, but it doesn't look very much like it.
P.S. There are so many ways to get a WinMo phone stuck (my wife has one, I regularly practice using the reset button when doing something with the system) it's not even funny.
thanks for the tips. I'll give them a shot. I read in a couple different threads that HTC has been sending replacement batteries to those with overheating issues. I have a hard time believing it's the battery but what do I know?
One thing I forgot to add about WinMo, I soft reset my device every morning on the way to work. Just a habit I got into with Windows.

Yeah sounds like you got a faulty device. If the above suggestions don't work, call HTC and they should do a swap for you
went to the Google "Device Troubleshooter" support page: http://google.com/support/android/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=185837
Step 1: What are you having an issue with?
selected: A hardware problem I'm having with the Nexus One
Step 2: A hardware problem i’m having with the Nexus One
selected: My device overheats
Then it said this:
It is normal for your phone to get warm after an extended period of continual usage, such as a long phone conversation. If your phone becomes so warm that you cannot hold it comfortably, please try removing the battery and waiting until the phone cools off before replacing it.
If your phone overheats to the point of shutting itself off repeatedly, there may be a hardware defect with your phone's battery. Please visit our warranty information page.

So I called support (open 7 days a week - nice) and they are shipping out a new battery tomorrow and if that doesn't work, I'll send it in for repair. Didn't want to replace it because it was engraved.
I really hope this fixes it. I do like Android and I love the community work. iOS blows and Windows Mobile 7 just doesn't have me wanting one.
I'll update this thread when the new battery arrives and if necessary, after the repair work...
I used to have the same problem, but i don't think it was rom specific for me. I had a black case on my phone and my car mount was a black universal one mounted on my windshield. I would use GPS nav and play music at the same time and sometimes make phone calls and it would reboot pretty frequently. Through SetCPU i noticed that the temp was somewhere between 45-50degrees C. only way i was able to use my phone was to remove the battery and stick it in my AC vent along with the phone itself.
So since then i got myself a AC mounted carmount and no longer use my case and its been fine ever since. When ever it gets hot in my car i usually have AC on and the phoen gets cooled by it also. Average temp was around 15-18degrees C while i was using GPS/Music/Calls.
lulz, sounds like your phone had a hardware issue if it was rebooting all the time like that.
I have had my phone on for literally weeks at a time with out a reboot. Android is rock solid stable.
Way to not get your issue fixed and go back to a dead mobile OS that was never developed properly in the first place. Good luck with that champ.
My phone could stab me in the balls all day long and I still wouldn't revert to the current winmo.

Fact: Windows Mobile still does several things much better than Android. And those things are important to me on my primary device.
I get what you're saying though. Despite a few issues, Android is dominating everything in it's wake. But instead of Android spending so much time with new flashy features, they should focus their attention getting the basics right first. Their contact and email handling B L O W S. How about proper email folder handling and a basic undelete function...
I agree with the rest. To be honest, I didn't get my Nexus new, it has had two users before me. It came with Cyanogen Mod, and to be honest I find it gives better battery life and performance compared to the stock OS. If I were you I'd try it out once you get the Nexus back.
I use ROM manager to download and install ROMs, give it a try.

[Q] No Nandroid Backup

Hello all. Well, last night I rooted my phone and then was going to install the original wireless tether app that Jr33 did.
My problem is when I tried to make a backup after it rooted I now get this:
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /cach/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
From here I can reboot or reinstall but it does the same thing and just brings me back to rebooted with no backup made as far as I can tell. There's never a choice to select nandroid.
Is there something I'm missing here? Is my update.zip corrupted? Or any suggestions on what to do next?
Thanks
did you install Clockwork recovery post-root? That places a new update.zip in your internal SD that is needed for taking and restoring nandroid backups.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I downloaded the update.zip file again. Gives me the same error message.
I think I think I had ROM Manager installed before I rooted but I hadn't run anything in the software yet. (Can't quite remember, slept since then)
Go to Rom Manager, pick the Vibrant as your phone, top option will be to download and install clockwork recovery. Once this is done you can make a nandroid backup inside clockwork recovery... You can use rom manager to boot into it (NOT the stock recovery)
Sent from my Vibrant
That worked. Picked Vibrant as my phone. Then it didn't error out and I could get to the screen where I could choose nandroid. Ran the backup. Rebooted & ran the Mobile AP. It works too. Now maybe lag fix next... Thanks!
^ why bother with the lag fix? Froyo is coming this month... patience.
Mostly because the lag on my phone drives me crazy, I might wait for 2.2 though. Lots of reading before I pull the trigger on the lag fix. Seems like lots of people are on the fence as to if they're happy with it or not and I'm not a fan of unintended consequences.
FWIW, this is my 2nd phone & the first was less laggy than this one, but it drained batteries like no tomorrow. Never got more than 5hrs out of a fully charged battery. This phone has gone 18hrs but usually more like 12.
^ that sounds absurd to me (5 hours)....
when you say "lag"... what exactly are you seeing that makes you say it's laggy? Sounds like a basic question, but if you can, please explain.... Do you mean the app drawer/moving screens, etc.... do you mean opening apps?
I would suggest trying LauncerPro.
It was absurd. I unplugged once at midnight fully charged and went to bed. Didn't wake up in time for work because the phone didn't make it to 6:30 when my alarm was supposed to go off. I exchanged it that day after work.
The "lag" I consider is mostly opening & closing applications. Like when I'm in gmail and I hit the home or back button to go to the home screen. I press & then wait what feels like half a second for the phone to respond. Other examples are in Craigsnotification when I want to mark something as read or want to go back a screen and it just hangs there for a second. The other phone was much faster with this. With this processor I expect applications to open virtually as fast as I can press the icon.
I'll try out LauncherPro, thanks.
Re: lag - I'm not sure, but it seems to me that syncing operations in the background seem to cause slow response times, or lag, if you will.
Might help to look into what applications you have running, ex. Facebook, twitter, etc and try decreasing the sync frequency.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you are rooted you may also want to try Autostarts (or a similar app) that will prevent apps from starting during certain tasks (bootup, texts, emails, etc). It may help... I really do not notice the lag people always talk about. I also came from a CM5 G1 to the Vibrant, so perhaps it is relative.
The lag was pretty bad on mine. Black screen for a few seconds as I was switching between apps or opening/closing them. It wasn't like it was the worst thing in the world or anything, but it was definitely enough to notice and gnaw at me daily.
At the time, I thought it was unrelated but the native Email app (which I synched up to my work email) was simply craptastic, to the point of me going back to my work-issued Treo 750 to simply read and reply to emails given how absurdly slow and non-responsive the Email app was.
Anyway, I downloaded RyanZA's One-click Lag .apk from the Market, applied it, and I couldn't be happier with my phone. Now it feels like the phone I expected it to be when I bought it, no more lag, it's super-responsive, and it also fixed my email app issues. The Email app is seriously a night and day difference after applying the lag fix, I really like it now and use it daily.
My wife has an unrooted stock Vibrant (she's not as adventurous I guess) and we both use Launcher Pro. After the Lag Fix I handed my phone to her and told her to mess around with opening up apps, streaming pandora, surfing, etc. She said it was definitely much faster than her phone and more responsive.
Re: possible adverse consequences... well, that's what nandroid backups are for, I guess. Between Clockwork/nandroid backups I've taken, both the rooted and unrooted stock update.zip files provided here at XDA, and the option to flash to stock via ODIN, I felt that those things were enough to mitigate the risk of applying the lag fix to my phone, including the mods I've applied like applying the MobileAP and Captivate camera .zips. YMMV.
This is my first Android phone, coming from Blackberry Curve 8320. I really expected it would be a giant leap in performance considering the Vibrant is 3x faster than the Curve. I about took it back the first day because the Facebook app was so unbelievably slow and lacking features compared to the BB app, I about threw it across the room a few times waiting for things to load.
I was stuck on EDGE with the BB with my d/l speed somewhere around 800kbps compared to I regularly hit 6Mbps with the Vibrant on 3G. Inexplicable to me why it takes as long as it does to function. I'm replacing my cable internet with wireless tethering so the 3G was important to me.
Launcher Pro seems to be a noticeable improvement in speed. I'm going to miss the full screen Updates widget... Have to figure out a replacement.
Most likely I'll pull the trigger on the lag fix, too impatient. If only the GPS worked the majority of the time... Going on a 1500 mile road trip next week and I know I'll be cussing at this thing. Even without GPS on the BB as long as I had internet at least I could always figure out where I was.
Thanks for everyone's responses, very helpful. I'm sure I'll love this thing eventually, hopefully.
OP,
not sure if you tried this but try rebooting into clockwork recovery and doing a nandroid from there. two ways to do that, once you have the clockwork update.zip in sd root:
1. with the clockwork app. option reboot into clockwork recovery
2. turn phone off > turn phone on while holding power and vol +/- > install update zip > you should now be in clockwork recovery

Recent return experiences?

Lately my G2's been acting wonky, my wife will call and my phone will be right next to me but not register anything, and 5 minutes later I'll look at it and have a missed call even though it never rang. It doesn't do it every time, but it was kind enough to do it when the tmo rep test-called me, so now I'll be getting a new phone. I haven't replaced an android phone yet, I used to have a blackberry and transfering all my info and settings was extremely easy. What do I need to do to get my new phone set up without losing my apps, settings, etc.?
Also, I have 2.3.3 loaded on this current phone, have any of you gotten replacements recently with that pre-loaded, or is Tmo still sending out the G2 with 2.2 on it?
Whenever I switch phones, I use Titanium Backup for my apps, Dolphin Bookmark to SD for my bookmarks and I manually redo all the settings to my taste. If you don't have root, MyBackupPro works pretty well for the apps, and you can also use it for phone data like bookmarks, SMS messages and that sort of thing.
As far as the Android version, I got a replacement about a month ago from Tmo with 2.3.3, I told them it was defective and they sent me another one, this time with 2.2. But other people on here have had different experiences, so I think it's just kind of a luck of the draw deal right now.
Cheers!

[Q] Dismally slow application response

For awhile now, my Droid 2 has been slow - slow to launch applications, slow to respond to touch, etc. I cannot attribute it to any newly installed application. Updates, maybe, but I'd have no idea which. I had it rooted with Z4Root, but then Verizon pushed out 2.3 and the phone became so slow that it is totally unreliable. I'll receive phone calls and 25% of the time the call will go to voice mail before I can get the phone to respond. I'll try to make a call and it may be 30 or more seconds between initiating the call to when the dialer appears and dials. Data speeds are slow.
At times the phone seems to operate at almost normal speeds and then it gets slow again. I've removed root access and uninstalled applications that require root access. I've also removed many other applications that I just don't need or use.
On my SD card it says I have 6.11GB free (out of 14.83 total). For "Application Storage" it says I have 5.63 Available Space.
I can't figure out what's wrong. Are there any suggestions short of resetting the phone to factory defaults and staring over?
Thanks,
Andrew
This has happened to my phone before also (droid2 rooted stock rom).
What i did to fix the situation, was the only thing i could think of.
I just did a factory reset to froyo and my phone was fast again.
Just back up all you apps and do a factory reset, its your only real option far as i can tell.
You could try installing something like 3g watchdog to monitor your apps and see if maybe 1 of them is eating up your phones processor.
Good luck.
Far as i can tell these phones are not much different from a home pc, in that they acquire so much extra pointless bull**** during their use that it just clogs the system. Forcing a reinstall just like a home pc.
Once they are reset back to factory, their performance returns to normal along with battery life.
Just be careful not to keep putting useless apps you dont even use onto your phone, just the apps that are absolutely necessary.
Keeping to this formula keeps my phone in tip top shape, short of changing roms or major tweaking.
Sigh I guess I'll need to try the reset.
I do have Watchdog installed and the last reported 'incident' was three days ago. No help there.
Everything is backed up, so here it goes... (I'll post back once I recover.)
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I am having the same issues. I have an R2D2 stock, never rooted. Since the Gingerbread update, it has been flaky and getting worse. It is rebooting several times a day. I miss calls because the screen won't respond. Sometimes the hard keyboard won't respond and I have to manually reboot the phone to get the keyboard back. At least once, the soft keyboard wouldn't work either. I am hating Gingerbread but am at a loss on how to remove it. I'll be watching for your updates.
The gingerbread update has been reported to have several annoying as hell bugs, i never installed it for that reason alone. Besides i don't feel like loosing the ability to tether wireless, just to upgrade to a buggy version of android. Ill wait for ice cream to hit then maybe upgrade if i see something worth upgrading for. Till then its froyo, maybe try cyanogen mod 7.1
Far as going back to froyo from gingerbread, i know its been done and is fairly easy to do. Not sure how much different it is from a factory reset.
