I never thought I'd say this, but I was under the impression that Samsung's new lineup would be using their own OS (Bada) rather than Android...I've now heard different and done some snooping.
I've hated Samsung phones, but OMG...

Just take a look at that!!!
I've got another two weeks that I can return my Evo...should I keep it or wait for Galaxy S?
I mean just look at that - less power consumption, AMOLED screen, much faster GPU, faster RAM
I just got this Evo and I feel like something better is already coming out...
Dude I'm in the same boat as you I just got it and I heard about the galaxy s but after doing more research it seems like my evo is already outdated in some aspects by the galaxy s. I heard rumors its gonna be on t-mobile too and I canceled my contract with them to get the evo. But as I said its better only in a few ways. I wanna see reviews for it but by the time the galaxy s is out I won't be able to return the evo. I'm in a dilemma especially after the problems with the evo like battery life subpar 8 megapixel camera and 720p video and the 30 fps cap (that one gets me pissed) .- I wonder what other ppl at xda have to say- imma be watching this thread.
im returning my evo for the samsung galaxy s pro (with qwerty keyboard) for sprint.
I'm also very interested in the Galaxy. I love the Evo but the screen problem has got me thinking twice and I'm not too happy with how thick the Evo feels to me compared to my HD2. I understand that the Galaxy has a CPU with the same clock speed but tests have shown it to perform better along with the GPU as mentioned. The much slimmer profile sounds very good to me and the lack of a camera flash is a letdown but one I could live with.
Samsung is known for not supporting their phones after release but they have confirmed that the Galaxy will be updated with Froyo. On 2G the battery is rated for talk time longer than the iPhone 4G and is of course replaceable. Also 16GB built-in + add a 32GB micro sd card and you have more storage than nearly any smartphone.
Here is the best review (9 pages) I've found on the Galaxy:

true the galaxy s has some great specs..
but you might want to do a little research on the Samsung support on thier phones. from what I have seen... it is a very big issue. they tend to push out great spec phones and then move on to the next phone to develop; and forget the old.
some times it is not just the specs. how the parts add and give you over all total performance. From reading on other phones.. (ex: hero vs moment).
But it's a Samsung...

That's better than htc who puts out phones with glaring problems and then stops supporting them. I haven't had an htc Pune since the tilt. I was hoping they had changed so I could get an evo, but apparently they haven't. I'm liking the galaxy s pro right now.

True, but HTC's record is just as pathetic.
We'll see when we will have a bug fix release and maybe in 10 months Froyo...
The Galaxy is nice, but if you like the developing and deep hacking and customizing.
HTC is the way to go.
yeah you guys are right - i know samsungs phones tend to sound good on paper and turn out not that great after all. happened a couple of times before. wanted to love their phones, but just couldnt.
besides the galaxy s looks pretty ugly compared to the evo
ok is it me or does this thing REALLY look like an iphone clone? Don't get me wrong the specs are good, but that Touchwiz overlay is a huge negative for me. In addition the only advantages I see the Galaxy S as having is the internal storage (which doesn't matter to me because I haven't even filled up my 16gb card half way yet, so an extra 8/16gb of storage doesn't excite me), the screen resolution (I'd rather have less resolution and a larger screen though), and the processor (same clock speed but faster gpu, seeing as I don't do an extensive amount of gaming on my phone I couldn't careless about that. Not to mention the gaming I do with games such as Gangstar and Nova, which are 3d environments, run perfectly fine). The disadvantages for me would be: lack of 4g (I get great 4g coverage here in Atlanta and also get good speeds on it 4-8megs), lack of camera flash, does not come with flash (you will have to wait until froyo, or install a custom rom to do any browsing that involves flash), and below average speakerphone. The phone looks like a decent phone but it does not have enough advantages for me to make a switch. Just my opinion.
I'll pass on the samsung. I'm really not digging their skinning either. With their post support issues I think I'd rather deal with apple and the iphone or motorola and their new high end droid. That said I'm not going to go and get raped by verizon, I don't want to get raped by at&t either and I'm happy with my evo.

I agree about the looks! It looks way too much like an iPhone and the UI screenshots don't make it look any better. But have you seen the long demo video on YouTube? I forget which one it was, but I have to admit I was pretty impressed by the way it all flowed and this is coming from a guy who loves HTC Sense.
For someone like me, the extra 16GB would mean that I could ditch my iPod 160GB Classic and just have one device (I like to keep all my music and audiobooks on one device). Also reported by a few different blogs, the Galaxy screen is better and the hummingbird is reported too as being faster than the snapdragon in our Evos. And I guess I'm alone in this, but the super slim profile is a huge plus to me. But that back cover is pretty ugly. I'd really just like to demo this thing myself, with my Evo in hand and then decide. I'd also like to do the same with the iPhone 4G. These devices coming out on different dates, sure does making the choice making that much harder.........

I keep reading different carriers. Samsung has said they want the device to be on every carrier in every country and so if that holds true then it will be on all but my question is who will have it first late this month or next month as reported. I have seen some screenshots, showing T-Mobile account data on a Galaxy screen, but now I'm hearing Verizon and ATT as well.......

naw i like them because they build quality devices and have awesome customer support. i feel they do things right for the most part. i bet after u get done waiting for root on the samsung ull be trying to fix just as many things. also xda and all the other dev communities for HTC devices are well rounded and have a major following. HTC has been spiting out awesome devices for a long time. ive been hooked since my Axim X50v. that was back in 03

I'm with you all the way on it, i like how motorola designed the droid X but not their software, and I wouldn't get a motorola anyways.
Two days ago operator made me an offer of any smartphone for free, I narrowed it down to the most expensive hehe: Iphone 4, Desire HD or a sgs and don't know which to buy. This is a once time deal I can't wait for dual cores and whatever else comes out next year I need to reach a decision this week.
What should I buy? I have seen and used all OSs . The only thing I like about the ios is the app store, I generally dislike Apple and Idrones.
I'm relatively tech savvy (in the non-douchy kinda way xD
Except some minor annoyances here and there I love android. Can any one give some advice? Thx and ho ho ho
iPhones kinda nice but not as much for the geek in you.
HD Desire ??
SGS awesome phone. Too bad they're blowing up left right and center.
Android app store is choke full of goodies and I've found cool stuff my bro can't get on his iphone4
Imo the SGS, the screen is just beautiful and the processor is a monster compared to the Desire HD and iPhone 4 is just not my cup of tea.
SGS will most likely be more optimised after Nexus S is release, I realy think it's already fast and powerfull, and it will only get better!
Camera is amazing and Night mode is franckly pretty amazing, you'd get more than what you can see!
HD Videos is pretty good also!
Sync is all with your GMail account, so pretty simple and straight forward. You can sync your outlook with GMail if needed.
And if you need to access the files on the device, the USB can be mounted so it's pretty fast to transfer things.
Only down I can see on the SGS is the "sometime" flawing GPS, not all the time but can be anoying sometimes :|

Say whaat?
I think you should go for the Desire HD. It's got 768 MB of RAM vs. the 340 MB available (out of a claimed 512 MB) on the SGS. And it's got a bigger screen, almost an equally powerful processor, very snappy, and it's already got 2.3 Gingerbread.
If you need a powerhouse for games, SGS is the way to go though. Nothing matches it's GPU at the moment.

hmmm isnt that becouse of the ****ty samsung filesystem and/or bad kernel
and should i be concerned about only 339 ram?
Buy the iPhone 4, sell it for $600-$800 off contract, buy whatever phone you want. Personally I'd says Desire HD simply because Sense is much better than Touchwiz and it has the Sense.com features (free remote wipe, GPS tracking, text through phone through website, etc). However, the battery is kind of weak so I'd recommend a bigger one if you can find one.

They ported it from Nexus One to Evo, and Desire HD is basically a variant of Evo
Damm I'm more confused now than when I started...
Iphone: don't really like how it feels in my hand, really small screen, absolutely no customization whatsoever.
good things: apps, no major bugs and better shades of blue lol.
Desire HD: seems to have the worst hardware out of the three (cpu and gpu) piece if crap battery, seems if it falls once is over, ****ty battery and sim cover and imo the camera that sticks out like the evo is really effing ugly
Good things: most ram out of the three, htcsense.com, biggest screen (preferences but I think 4" is perfect)
SGS: plagued by software bugs apparently, random data corruption, no flash, needs most tweaking out of the box
Good things: best screen cpu & gpu, the nexus s is almost the same phone which means better development porting the works(here's hoping) and best battery life
By comparison seems that the sgs wins overall categories
Its easy. If you want the best smartphone the its sgs.
Iphone is not as good many say.
I did have one and i did sell it.
Iphone has more good games. That's the only good with it.
The rest is much better with sgs.
HD phone is not better either.
It has more serious flaw then both sgs and iphone together.
Sgs is a powerhouse and it got the best screen of all phones.
Sure sgs can be laggy out of the box, but that is easy to fix.
So right now there is not a phone that's has anything to compete with.
The sgs will win it all the time.
**Using my own JPU kernel, z4mod, 339MB Ram and ext2 filesystem**
My father has an iphone3g and my uncle has the iphone 4 I jailbreaked it for him honestly I wasn't that impressed with the phone. The only thing I like about it is the apps mainly the games are much more refined than on android phones
Also why has the sgs only have 340ram ? On every page I looked it says 512. Will that bite us on the ass later I mean the dhd almost has 800 and phones are moving on 1gb .are you telling me the sgs has as much ram as my old ass hero?

It does use a 512MB chip, but only ~340MB of it is visible after you're booted up. Out of the other ~172MB, there's around 40MB that's unaccounted for (we don't know where its being used) and the rest of it is "reserved" (even when the functions it's reserved for are not in use) for stuff like video playback, 3G calling etc.

I'd have to say i agree with Product F(RED)
Desire HD is the best phone on the list IMHO. But getting the ipoop and selling on will mean you can get the HD desire and still have some cash in your pocket
sgs is the best (imho!) it's a pain out of the box but that's why we love it so much, let's face it, most of us like tweaking and playing with our phones, it's half the fun. Flashing new roms, installing different lagfixes, uninstalling new roms, uninstalling new lagfixes, whoops I've broken it, nope, it's going again. The sgs is a geeks wet dream and in my experience it is very difficult to fully brick.
So if you want a phone that you are going to have to fiddle with, get the sgs. Jpu seems to have ironed out a lot of problems, I get perfect gps now, although it was pretty good before. I'm actually a little disapointed that jpu works so well, it kinda takes the fun out of it all
If this doesn't appeal to you then get the hd, it's a good phone, screen is not as good and it doesn't feel as fast as my tweaked sgs, but overall it's definitely a winner and you won't be disapointed
The iphone is also a good phone and not to be sniffed at, if you don't mind being spoon fed by apple.
i have to say SGS, because of the most powerful hardware, software is not important, because we can fix that easy , as surprise Samsung also tries there best, i think with JPU Firmware they show that they are willing todo everything, Hardware we can't fix, SGS has currently the fastest CPU + GPU specially the GPU!!!!! is amazing, why do you think Google went with Nexus S , because of Hardware, Speed, Quality, Availability.......
Nexus S and Android 2.3 Gingerbread was made to give game developers the best available Hardware and with Gingerbread many things which will make Game development easier and because of the CPU + GPU, which is almost the same as Iphone 4 has (SGS a little bit better), it will also make porting games from iphone to android pretty easy now.
About HTC Sense i agree it is a nice homescreen, but on the other hand it is a memory, cpu and battery monster! why do you think they have 768MB Memory and if we look at different homescreen replacements (ADW, Laucher Pro, Zeam,.......), then i really don't see the big advantage at all, but thats a taste decission
So for me i have to say i am very happy that i went with the SGS, i really can't understand users who say that the SGS is built cheap, i have the SGS now since the beginning, i don't use a screenprotector, the plastic is thin but it still looks like new also after falling on the floor (shame on me), compared to my previous HTC Units which where loosing color on there great metal casing and not by falling on the floor but because i used a leather case, the signal was often a issue for me (metal), dust was behind the screen after a short time,........
I have to say that the Samsung Hardware is such an improvement compared to HTC that i won't anytime soon look back to any HTC unit even if it would have a killler hardware.
But that are just my 2 cents on it
Go for the iPhone 4 unless you really need flash. It has the best screen of the three(the pentile matrix of the SGS is just horrible) and works correctly out of the box.

Care to elaborate on this? The iphone does have a gorgeous screen, but to call the sgs screen horrible is a bit like saying that Angelina Jolie is a dog. Sure there are better looking girls out there than her, but would you kick her out of bed? Most definitely not, unless you bat for the other team of coursee, in such a case swap angelina for brad or whom ever floats your boat.
Hi all, I know its down to personal preference, but, I have a SGS1 with 16GB internal memory running 2.3.3. stock, so getting a SGS2 would not improve any of that, do you think its worth getting the SGS2? what would you all do and what would be the improvement i would see?
Thanks for your thoughts
Been playing with one this weekend, they are very fast, have lots of memory and white ones look great.
The downside, everyone has one, sound is worse than SGS1, nexus prime out soon. I would personally get the nexus or wait for the SGS3 etc, surely you want something a bit different, the 2 is just a little bigger and a little faster

This, by far. +1
My wife picked one up a week ago, so I can truly compare mine to it side by side and I would say, I like it a lot.
1. Much, much faster.
2. There doesn't appear to be any Lag involved
3. Battery doesn't seem to last very long, but as I tested that part of it early on, it may need a few cycled charges to really say how good/bad it is.
4. GPS is way better than the SGS.
Now, having said all that, the phone is perfect for my wife (she bought the white one). She, having been a long-time blackberry user til her 9700 screen crapped out has been getting used to it, but she's starting to like this phone much better than her blackberry.
Like I said though.. its perfect for my wife. She doesn't know Gingerbread from Shortbread when it comes to this phone, and I intend to keep it that way. Yes this phone runs 2.3.3, but it doesn't seem to bad compared to my SGS with stock 2.3.3 as well. My phone is rooted, but I don't have intentions of rooting hers.
Long story short, its blazing fast, but I wouldn't buy one for myself. Samsung is just too slow on firmware updates to make it worth it for me. In fact any carrier specific phone would be. They are Androids, but they are kind of like Androids bastardized cousin. For me, my next phone is a nexus. I want it to grow as Android grows, and that only happens with Google.
Should wait for SGS 3, far better specs this phone will be awesom

My Mrs has a black sgs2 and comparing it to my original sgs is tough.
On the plus side the screen and speed of the sgs2 are really nice. However for everyday use i find it just that little bit too big, also the handset doesn't feel as strong as the original. Im reasonably confident i could drop my phone and survive to tell the tale, but with the 2 i find myself being really careful.
Sound on the 2 really isn't anywhere near the standard of original, i like to hear my music, although I've not seen if supercurio has made much progress on the 2.

I agree, those are awesome specs. But then again, so are the SGII's... definitely not comparable, but awesome nonetheless.
My whole point in this is, specs are just that... specs. The SGS II that my wife has is amazing specs wise. Its head over heals better specs wise than my SGS1.
Here's the problem though... aside from flashier graphics, a bigger screen, and a flash for the camera, its still 2.3.3. So its not a great leap for me to go to it.... its essentially the same phone if you think about it. Sure, the SGS2 will most likely get the upgrade to ICS, but when? After Jello or whatever 'J' is comes out?
The SGS3 will suffer the same fate. It will be up to Samsung to update it, not google.
The SGS3 will be a great phone, but you'll have to wait for a developer to harness its true power. Just like the SG2 and SGS1.
Whereas any nexus incarnation will have google behind it, and updated accordingly.

1.8 GHz dual core, 2GB RAM and samoled plus HD (read: RGB, not pentile)...daaaamn. I'm dropping cash on that the day it comes out unless I get a Nexus Prime instead. The rounded shape makes it look pretty big though.
Could be total BS though, there are two mistakes on the slide: copying is spelt wrong and the SGS doesn't have exynos cpu it has hummingbird. It's also weird that the "copying or reproduction is not allowed" is located like that, usually it would be along the bottom of each slide in a presentation so as not to interfere with any of the content. The way it is kind of screams "single fake slide".
For the record, Samsung renamed all their SoC to Exynos xxxx, even humingbird. I find this stupid, but that's how it is.

I have no problem running stock AOSP Android on any SGS, so what exactly are you waiting for? You say we have to wait for Samsung, then we have to wait for a developer... but in reality, ICS will be on the SGS2 with practically no wait at all.

"Official Samsung Firmwares" are never instantaneous, at least not here in Canada they aren't.
I mean think about it. The original SGS was the flagship phone, and we had to wait a long to go to Froyo when it first came out to the rest of the world... then while the rest of the world was enjoying bug fixes inside 2.2.1, we in Canada never received a 2.2.1 update at all.
Then go over to Gingerbread. Took forever for Canada to yet again see 2.3.3. But that is where Canada is at right now.. INCLUDING THE CURRENT FLAGSHIP SGS2. The rest of the world is either enjoying 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 or 2.3.6.
Lets not even mention the blatant, "reproduceable for anyone" bugs that are in 2.3.3 but not 2.3.4 for our I9000M's... namely swype speech button not working at all on the SGS.
AOSP? You'd have to fill me in on where you're getting your roms that don't void warranty for using them. Thats not a point I care about, but many others out there do.
The SGS2 (My wifes) was released AFTER 2.3.4 came out... yet they put 2.3.3 on it. That make any sense to anyone?
Sure it makes sense.. Carrier branded or "Locked" phones get in the way of quick releases for obvious reasons, and beyond that, samsung has 10 billion different incarnations of the same device that may need tweaking here or there to the rom. Hence slowdowns.
Having said all this, Google Phones don't have that problem.... The Nexus Prime will be what? the 3rd or 4th phone released under the Nexus name? Easy to code for, find bugs and release an update.
All these specs we are seeing for the SGS 3 may or may not be real. Same goes for the Nexus Prime. We'll have to wait and see.... but to me, quick support and updates mean everything.
please correct me if im wrong but the galaxy nexus is made by samsung so wont we have the same software update waits that we get with the SGS1 and 2
No the nexus s is also Samsung but nexus phones get software straight from google.
I have had a Galaxy S for 6 months and I upgraded to a Galaxy S2 a couple of weeks ago.
On the SG1 sound over the earphones is better, battery lasts longer and... that's all.
Everything else is better on the SG2 but the true big reason to upgrade, for me, was the SG2'S 1Gb RAM. I multitask a lot and even with bigmem firmwares and GalaxyTuner task-killer tuning I had apps having to reload almost every time I switched back to them (especially when one of the ones open in the background was the browser, which was very often).
That's the big single reason to upgrade, for me, and I am VERY happy with the SG2 in this regard. This phone is a multitasking king.
Having said all of that, unless you have similar needs I wouldn't advise upgrading. Everything is better on the SG2 but not enough, IMO, to make the upgrade worth it. Wait for something which is a bigger improvement over the SG1, like the Note (not for everyone, I know, but going to be my next smartphone in 6 months or so) or the SG3.
BTW, I see the Galaxy Nexus mentioned a lot, to me it's inferior to my SG2 (NO SD CARD SLOT!?!) apart obviously from ICS, which the SG2 is going to get.
I had a play around on an SGS2, had the opportunity to upgrade from my i9000 relatively cheaply and even though I thought it was great, would have appreciated the additional RAM and more powerful CPU I didn't go for it. The audio quality was just crap compared to my SGS and half the time I listen to music on it whilst working or on the bus or whatever so music's important to me and in that sense it would have been a downgrade.
Also as a matter of personal taste I thought it was a little too big. You could get used to it but the way I see it even with my giant head and giant hands I just about get away with a 4 inch handset (which I find the ideal sort of size) and anything larger just seems a little ostentatious. Unfortunately there currently seems to be a trend towards giant phones which I'm hoping will die out soon because when I do get round to upgrading I don't want to feel like I have to walk around with some Trigger Happy TVesque giant.
Anyways, like the bloke above I think the RAM would be the biggest upgrade, multitasking and all that. I don't really see anything that really needs the dual core processor and GPU wise the SGX540 in the SGS is alright, and seeing as we don't currently get the games you do on iOS it's not like it's really getting pushed that much anyway.
Bottomline I'd say if music is important to you, stick to the SGS. If not and you're a multitasking fiend it's probably worth the upgrade if you can get a good deal.
Ive bought a Note and today a Galaxy Nexus and they all go back...
Nothing to compare with the S2...
Can you be more precise on what you dislike?
on note:
+display size for browsing
-laggy and slower comperd to s2
-size, im 193cm but its too big for beeing a mobile phone
on galaxy nexus:
+display it looks really georgous
+videocam can zoom on fullhd and shows more
-ics at this moment (mods, app support, flash etc) is not better then gingerbread
-microsd card
Galaxy S2 is still the best one, the note and nexus only have a larger screens with higher res. And this is it.

How is the note laggier? I thought it was an overclocked S2
How was the battery life on the note and nexus?
I am curious since I was thinking of changing
Have to admit having an s2 with an sd card slot is brilliant, why on earth they didn't see that as a plus I'll never know!

The notes battery was really better compared to the s2. my s2 survives on heavy useage on a office day 8 hr, the note could add 3-4 hrs... on the nexus i dont know.
The note is lagerif you use it daily as a mobile device, youre not able to use it with one hand...

so the note is laggier becoz of its size limitation in regards to physical manipulation, not the cpu processing power. is that what u mean?

I'd like to comment on this and say that after the SGN has been released, the hype has gone down for me. Being a new OS/phone there seem to be a plethora of bugs flying around, with small annoyances starting to come out.
As a techie it's easy for me to claim ICS superiority, but how will you explain these things to your dad for example? "ICS is...uh...better..."? The average person would see very minor changes. Yes the interface is new, but how is this really different from installing a new launcher? Sorry to sound cynical about ICS but to most people it is a minor interface change. The practical experience would be like moving from HTC Sense to TouchWiz... different interface but overall still the "same".

I have a note and s2. With2.3.6 firmware the note performance is more or less like the s2. Screen is better than the s2 and unless you have small hands it's very comfortable to use. Default CPU speed is 1.4 GHz which is enough to handle the extra pixels.

I dont agree about ICS being the same as installing a new Launcher. Go watch some more vids about ICS. You see changes in the phone app, in the calander app, in the browser. The UI is more consistent in every part of the OS, giving it a modern and complete look. There are nice animations, also for switching from portrait to landscape view, the new notifications bar, etc etc.
Not to mention there should be new features.
The Engadget ICS review goes pretty deep in to ICS.
I usually am like you and very honest and direct about if I like something or its not such a big deal. But imo ICS is a very good and nice update.

From someone who owned an HTC Diamond, the omission of an SD Card is a stupid idea. From a manufacturer's point of view, you make one phone which can have an 8GB, 16GB or 32GB extra memory which can be plugged in or (like Apple) manufacturer 3 variations of the exact same phone.

umm most of the things u point out is common sense ? couldnt u have known that before getting them ?
for example the size ... yes its big ..... didnt u know this >?????
yes ICS isnt better in the department because its NEW didnt u know this ether ?
no microsd card .... yeah couldnt u have known this from the spec page on samsung ??
this is one of the strangest threads
Interesting opinions, for me the Note is ruled out straight away it is simply too big for a mobile and frankly i think it looks a bit silly walking around with something that size stuck to your ear.
The Nexus i would be more interested in but the lack of SD rules out me getting that straight off, what were Samsung thinking
Actually i don't know why Samsung are even bothering releasing more and more smartphones trying to rival the SGSII, i hope it's not a case of quantity as opposed to quality, churning out a new smartphone every few months for me isn't the way to go, if i were Samsung i would've waited until Feb 2012 and released the SGSIII complete with ICS and watch as sales rocket, lets be honest the Note and Galaxy will be lucky to achieve even a 1/3 of the sales the SGSII has done, only the wealthy and those who are really obsessed with having the latest smartphone regardless if it's the best or not will buy, judging by the reviews ive read both these phones are no better than the SGSII so why bother shelling out lots of money.

I'm not really impressed with ICS as well, UI change is a big thing especially the on screen buttons but I'm not a big fan. 2.1 and the Nexus one was still the most exciting thing to ever happen to android, big leap forward and the best smartphone available by a mile!

These changes in phone, calendar, browser etc doesn't mean we'll see them on the s2. Samsung has their own, tw etc. To me these are small changes anyway. What more do I want in the phone app anyway!

Don't you think it's wayyyy too big to be a phone, christ you may as well go back to 1988 when you had yuppies walking about with the first ever mobile phone
I don't have tiny girl hands so no its not way too big at all. Fits perfectly, if anything the SG2 seems too small now. I could never go back to a phone smaller than 5". Unless you're a psuedo-male that's around 5'4"-5-5" with girl like hands, it should be no problem to handle. Hell even most average sized girls could handle it with ease.
I like my sgs3 but I'm thinking of maybe changing to the new nexus.
The basic reasons are:
- IPS LCD display (if it has one like the rumors show). Amoled is clearly a second class display nowadays. Before it was good, but now... today I compared it to the LCD IPS of the iPhone 4S and I was impressed with the white backgrounds. On the SGS3 they look terrible on comparison, just terrible. There is also a notice difference in brightness and visibility outdoors.
- This whole problem with Samsung not releasing the info, codes and stuff of the exynoss processor is making it difficult for stock roms to become better. There is actually not that many interesting roms or tweaks available for the SGS3. Most roms are based on Samsung's. The nexus is obviously gonna have some really cool stuff and tweaks.
- Better optimization of software. Project butter on the SGS3 right now is a shame. I'm hoping on the next update they make it better. It's still a beta firmware so let's wait, but I don't trust Samsung that much.
Three basic reasons. Of course, not saying the SGS3 is a bad phone, but I expect better, specially software wise.

Yeah, I know. Not great obviously, but storage alone is not enough if you lack the other three I mentioned, like more tweaks, better roms and such.
Oh, I forgot another little reason:
- There is no in line spell checker on Samsungs touchwiz rom. In stock Android a red line appears before any misspelled word, but Samsung doesn't have this. The reason? Who knows... but I really need that feature because I type a lot on the phone.

Sorry, but the Nexus will never be a high-end phone. It's supposed to be somewhat affordable. Although considered a good value and pure Android, it won't possess the higher-end specs like the Galaxy S or HTC One series will. Which Nexus are you going to get? There are like 6 coming out next year. LG maybe?

I've come to realize more powerful hardware is not essential. What use is there for quad core if project butter is half baked and developers cannot use all its horsepower because of lack of documentation from Samsung? It's way better to have dual core optimised, just like the nexus will do be it dual or quad core. Software must be optimised or quad core means nothing.
I would buy the one with LCD IPS display clearly. I think it's the best display right now, very bright and whites look great.

Only thing I like with the nexus, would be the faster updates (yes I do use custom roms).
Another thing I can't really stand seeing users who say that stock android is better bla bla. Have you ever compared stock androids camera (aosp) vs samsungs one? You might dislike the template/colour scheme of touchwiz, but from a functionality point of view, samsungs software is way ahead of stock android. (even aokp, cm etc etc) eg, camera, task manager on home long press, clock app, better messaging app, contacts app etc, direct call, smart alert, smart stay (better than not having the option)

Butter shouldn't be the goal of the phone. Functionality clearly trumps it. For example, playing a complex game or watching a high resolution movie is where you'll see high-end hardware really shine. As for IPS, I foresee Samsung shedding that very soon in future models.

I agree that some of Samsung's modifications are really useful. I used an S3 then tried a Nexus for the first time and I couldn't stand the simplified options menu of the device.
Not interested in Nexus devices. Apart from faster software updates, I still can't see any better features Nexus can offer to consumers compare to OEM devices.

Yes my next phone would be a Nexus... I like the default android launcher and fast update on Android OS. Less stress cause by waiting and TouchWiz bugs.
I would sacrifice having no SD card slot if that's the case. I just want the next nexus to have a quad core and 2GB of RAM and a 32GB of storage would be fine with me.
if the price is right, i'll get the LG nexus phone to replace my S3
i'm always on AOSP rom. no point S3 when there's always something not working on stock android.
No sdcard slot = no go!
If it had a sdcard slot, I'd definitely go for it. It seems to solve all the problems of SGS3.
When the new Lumia 920 is there, i'll go for it.\
Im getting tired of android, the flashing, the custom ROMS.
None of it is without lagg, so i'm gonna try Windows Phone 8
No. The Nexus series of phones will never have a microSD slot 'cause Google do not think they're needed (along with file managers - with the Android trait of leaving leftover **** on the SD when uninstalling applications, yeah right). Despite already nearly filling up both my 16GB internal + 32GB microSD card, I'd - grudgingly - live with the loss of a microSD card slot but rumours say that the memory of the new LG Nexus is either 8GB/16GB in order to push Google's **** cloud services. Not only do I feel it's more futuristic that I can carry huge amounts of files on a tiny microSD card without having to be tied to the Internet, Google Music doesn't officially work this side of the pond and even if it did I don't have the data allowance to always be streaming - and, in my case, I don't get mobile phone signal for a couple hours a day...
LG have been told to make the next Nexus. Luckily, I never bought the useless doorstop known as the Optimus 2X, but ask around and owners will generally tell you it sucks thanks to its feature of randomly rebooting throughout your day, on the stock firmware doing nothing. LG Canada also said no to ICS for the phone - we're talking about the first Android dual-core phone and LG's flagship. Thankfully, Google will be operating the update side of things so this won't be an issue with the Nexus, but I'll be damned if I ever buy an LG phone (4x has a locked bootloader, for example. Again not a problem on the Nexus, but another reason why I'll never consider LG).
I want to (well, try to) punch a wall when I say this, but odds are I'll be getting a Sony phone when they release a phone with specs worthy of the month of the year they're announcing it in. (In short, I want a quad-core, Sony, not excitement over the fact that the T is - finally - your first dual-core) I'll never forgive them for the Vita but with phones, they seem to have it right so no point in cutting my nose off in order to spite my face. Everybody knows of Code Aurora, but Sony do release binaries for those things they don't/can't open the source of to make it easier for those who want to run AOSP-based ROMs, unlocking the bootloader can be done through a website of theirs (and there's no bollocks like S-ON to deal with), Entropy512 says they release the code of some of their own things that they don't need to - nothing groundbreaking but very helpful to AOSP ROM maintainers etc. and they've posted on XDA in order to promote their open-source software to help developers (there's a post from a Sony Ericsson employee somewhere on XDA talking about their program that wraps apktool and others to for a better decompiling experience... god I sound like a shill).
I've also seen them contribute fixes to upstream software. Take D-Bus. On a GNU/Linux desktop it's an open-source program used mainly by the KDE & GNOME desktops (and by a ton of freedesktop.org programs like the upower daemon) as a way for programs to communicate with each other. (Sorry for the awful attempt at an explanation) On Android it's there too, probably because BlueZ, which provides the Bluetooth stack, needs it. Applications can't use it on Android but if dbus-daemon is happy then BlueZ is too. On the DBus mailing list, I would see posts by Sony Ericsson employees working on Android trying to find out why X operation was slow and, in some cases, providing fixes themselves. This is a great approach as it means not only DBus-using Linux desktops get a more stable piece of software because Sony chose to submit directly to the people who wrote the the program, it also means that other Android phones that run the version of dbus-daemon with Sony's fixes also benefit. JBQ of Google also put the Arc S device tree into AOSP - the first non-Nexus phone - because (if I'm remembering right) Sony were always friendly to AOSP and were contributing.

As a previous owner of the original sgs1 and currently have the nexus s I recently had to decide on my new smartphone. I discounted the nexus pretty quickly because, frankly I found the nexus s boring. The nexus line will always be good but never great. Lack of storage and no sd card is a killer. The only - admittedly considerable - thing going for the nexus range is early access to latest firmware. That's it. The galaxy s range are sexy and leading edge. That's where each new model is aimed and that's what Samsung achieve
