[Q] ICS Browser lost its 'Home' button - Acer Iconia A500

Anyone know what happened to the 'Home' button that used to be available from within the Bookmarks section of the Honeycomb stock browser? It's not even available in the Quick Controls. I just want a quick way of getting to my homepage.

Not sure about that. Simple solution -> open a new tab

Yes, there are any number of workarounds I could use and I could try different browsers but I don't want to! I just want the same simple functionality that was previously available in the stock browser and would now appear to be lost.
Am I expecting too much?

No.
Although, hitting the new tab "+" sign is one step less than opening the bookmarks then hitting home making it slightly more simple.

Try ICS browser + on google play, lots of customization.

yeah i noticed that too about the home button
also using drive with ics somehow when my browser
synced bookmarks they are all gone even wiped out chrome
on laptop, had to restore on laptop but all i can do is add
one by one on tablet............

Does a modern html5 site like this http://sammystodos.brandonaaron.net
works on Nexus One or Desire?
It seems that the browser doesn't support standards as much as safari on iPhone..
Chrome is by far the best browser on the market, followed by Opera.
Eventually they will merge everything that desktop's Chrome can do into Android..
But so far - yes, that website works fine, except for editing the fields that you added. I assume that can easily be fixed by tweaking the site itself.
I can confirm that its working on the nexus one with to stock browser.

Which "Chrome" browser are you speaking of? I see a couple that say they only replace the logo, but none claiming to be anything different than the stock browser.
Sorry can u post a screenshot because I tried it in an emulator and I just see the background

Can you actually type?
I tried it on the Desire browser and it looks exactly like yours, but I cannot type. Holding the Menu button to bring up the keyboard doesn't work either.
Checking the checkboxes and using the trash can icon to delete items do work.

Google Chrome browser. I understand that Android is running a simplified version of Chrome on the PDAs.

The Android browser isn't Chrome. They're both WebKit based though.

Yeah I know.. but I betcha they use a lot of the same code.
Why rewrite the whole thing of they're both based on WebKit and Chrome obviously has awesome code.
I think the N900 might have the best mobile browser, my brother has one and it's pretty slick.

How is it better?
It's Fennec, which can do everything Firefox can do, including making use of the desktop addons, and it supports Flash 9.4
This will be an ongoing problem with HTML5.
"how does it look on this browser ??"
This is what people dont get about Flash. You have complete control over how everything looks. You dont have that control in HTML , everything is still browser dependent.
Not saying this cant be ironed out..but the impression that a <video> tag is going to solve HTMLs shortcomings is silly. As it stands the browsers are already divided over codec support.
Hi guys, i wanna take advantage of this thread to now more real-life web browsing issues.
How well works this sites on the N1 or HTC Desire browser? (without adding any ad-hoc apps)
- www.facebook.com (does the chat work?)
- www.youtube.com/html5 (how well run the html5 video)
Can u compare them to a normal web browser or iphone?

[R] De-Binged browser for DL30

In DL09 I had a debinged browser I used and I loved it, however I am not sure if I can use the same one in DL30. I know that the browser in Froyo uses the V8 Javascript engine and I do not want to lose these improvements. Is this in the kernel or in the APK? If it is the APK then I cannot use the same one I was using before correct?
Is a de-binged browser necessary with DL30? The browser settings now have an option for the default search, and mine was on Google by default. Is there any other forced Bing stuff in the browser that this option doesn't effect?
This is the browser from Adrenalyn's cleaned rom. When in the browser, the dedicated search button searches with Google and all the bookmarks are removable (through the old method of visiting each one, and then going into the history, clicking each and selecting "remove from bookmarks"). I didn't try the stock browser for too long, but I do know it wouldn't let you remove the Verizon bookmarks at all, through any method.
Best part is that this doesn't suffer from the grayed out address bar that the old 2.1 DeBinged browser did.

Edit nvm, I forgot I have my homepage set to igoogle. Searching in the url box does only use bing. However the softkey uses Google as does the voice search.

Yes .... 1) keywords entered in the URL go to Bing and 2) you can't delete the Verizon bookmarks
See my post above for a DL30 based Browser.apk that has been fully debinged.

[Q] Browser bug?

When accessing google in the standard browser I get the following strange behaviour:
Search for something.
Click a link.
Use 'back' key to return to search results and the page shows no results, just the Google logo and the search box.
If I refresh the page I get the search results back.
Is this the same for everyone?
Yep i had the same on both 3.0.1 and 3.1 however when on google.co.uk i have the cog icon top right for search settings and even though browser set to google instant off the sttings here still show as active so unticked google instant and saved preferences, now i do not have this problem
yep... i am seeing i too under 3.1
yep...this is a bug in the stock browser..
not a big deal but hopefully it will be fixed soon

Ya I have the problem with the stock browser as well, specifically with the docked keyboard. I have found if I do a right click to pop up the menu and cancel it, then I can start typing in the search box.
I also have this issue with the Dolphin browser.
i'm having this problem too... kinda. certain websites, like xda, i can't use the back button. this is happening on my tf and on my gt10.1 so it's not a tf specific issue. it may be an app causing this b/c before i synced my gt10.1 after reformatting it it worked fine.
since dolphin is doing this too maybe dolpin is causing the problem? got some digging to do. i may go back to fresh and install apps one at a time... what a pain that'll be.

Opera Mobile 11.1 Update, preferred browser; Flash support and User Agent changeable!

I don't know if you guys know already, but Opera Mobile browser has been updated to 11.1, bringing along a whole lot of goodies, including flash support and user agent changes.
One thing I did notice was that typing lag on facebook seemed to have diminished, this was on desktop view, however still unable to type through some pages with "disqus"
I also found HD 720p videos on youtube has greatly improved! It might be just me, but frames seem to be a whole lot better as opposed to dolphin HD and stock browser.
Frames also drop a bit when viewing full screen 720p in browser, but its watchable.
A link to change log can be found here: http://my.opera.com/operamobile/blog/2011/06/30/opera-mobile-11-1-has-arrived
Temporary Fix to search bar always going to mobile search (must apply apply every time you reset Opera), Credit to iCracked
Hey everyone, I have found a fix for those of you frustrated with the old google mobile search. once you have switched UA to desktop, go to google.com manually, it should load up the full site. Now, using your finger, press and hold over the google.com (website's) search bar, to bring up the menu. Now select "add search engine" then go to your browser search bar and tap the little google icon to bring up a list of search providers and select the new google one, be sure to delete the old one to avoid confusion.

yes, I noticed that too, but I made some video comparisons with a few 720p videos that I watched on different browsers, and it seems Opera seems to perform better. Only my judgement though, and I'm judging on real world performance, not an in app browser test to judge what I can see.
I am running Honeycomb 3.1 stock unrooted
and its fast!!!! not the flash. everything else. no keyboards lag ... Google you need to learn something or maybe buy opera.

Opera is known to introduce its own optimizations, so that's why it's the best in terms of Javascript performance showing zero lag in text input. Finally, Flash support is available! How did they manage to do that without Honeycomb source code?
memory usage is pretty bad tho. 170mb right now on xda wtf?
I'm guessing that the Flash support doesnt work with the hacked/hulu Flash? Opera isn't picking up my Flash but it works in every other browser...
Seems to work well and without any redraw issues when scrolling quickly. Good spot.
nice...will have to give it a try when i get home.
Last night i did a second reset. trying to run my tablet without any downloads for the moment and monitoring performance.
disabled javascript, flash on demand, and the browser was beautifully working. opened up links super fast, then.........
i hit the back button (lower left on screen)...the page does nothing. i press again, and this time it takes me 2 pages further than i wanted...damnit
then when i go from landscape to portrait, the damn quick scroll guide (added in 3.1) is stuck in the middle of the page...
all of a sudden..it crashes. no message, no warning, just straight back to home page. wtf... shame, because i love the layout of the stock browser.
But. Opera..here i come
Loving it. It's REALLY quick, feels 4x quicker than the stock browser, and more intuitive too. I also just tried their desktop browser, Chrome killer or what!!!
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Opera keeps on randomly zooming in on certain links when I click them. This is extremely annoying when using the touchpad as the mouse is plenty accurate enough.
Any way to turn this off?
Anyone successfully seeing flash videos in the new Opera using the 10.3 hulu hacked flash?
Google searches from the address bar or search box still use the mobile google site even with the UA set to desktop.
Did they also increase the font size on 11.1? The font size on previous version were much smaller then default browser, and dolphin HD

That's precisely why you don't see any redraw while scrolling. The stock browser uses less memory because it doesn't load the whole page, instead only loading the portion of the page that you are currently viewing. This translates to choppy performance because it has to reload the page every time you scroll up or down, but leaves more memory for the rest of the OS to work with.
I hate tabs on this thing. Hidden, huge and ugly.
Also it renders fonts badly (some letters are to close, some are too bold comparing to stock browser or Dolphin).
scrolling is jittery no where as smooth scrolling as default browser

I like them out of the way. They are hidden on my desktop that sports a full hd screen, I see no reason to keep them on sight on a "tiny" screen
Anyway, they didn't update Opera link, I was kinda hoping they will, so to get the most out of Opera 11.50....... oh well. One day.

[Q] Stock browser pie control gone!?

Not sure how many of you used the stock browser on the N2, but I found that the stock browser with pie control/quick control was freakin great! To my surprise and extreme disappointment it has vanished on the note 3 along with labs! Is anybody using the stock browser and miss that feature? Anyway to enable it somewhere?

Yes. Same here. Very disappointed. AND I cannot get QuickICS browser to work...which used to work fine on my Note 2. QuickICS installs, then when invoked, just give 5 seconds of black screen, then shuts down.

to get QuickICS working, you need to install the AOSP browser as a system app. Get this from the Play store:

I do wish this would work on my Note 3. I can get access to APPS folder in the root, but cannot install..or even copy files to it. Guess I will have to root the phone..was trying to run stock for at least a week or so...anyway, there must be something "different" about the S Verizon Note 3. Also, just downloading and installing this bugger from Play, did not work.
