[Q] manual nooter problem, question about flashing to stock

Hi, first post. I've searched for similar threads/questions but haven't found any.
I ran manual nooter 4.5.6 on my nook running 1.2.0 and was quite happy with it. But so last night I powered the Nook Color down and when I powered it up this morning it gets as far as the "nook color" colorized screen animation and then boot loops. I've seen other folks have this problem (posted in the dev forum in the manual nooter 1.2.0 thread) but no solution offered other than "restore to stock and re-root it".
While that's do-able, I was wondering what data gets wiped out in the 2nd part of the flashing to stock process. Is it possible to just do the first part (8 boots, restore to stock 1.2.0) and keep the data (books and music that I have on the onboard memory)? or is the data-wipe an integral part of restore to stock? does the userdata get wiped during the software update part anyway?
I don't care so much about having to reinstall apps and configuration etc etc (although if there's a way to get it booting without flashing to stock and I just haven't seen it, please let me know), but the data's a pain right now...

You probably have the issue where Flash was auto upgraded, a know problem.
I had to start over, making sure Flash wasn't set to auto update, and proceed from there.

Not sure if this will help or not but when I plug my nook into my computer I actually get 2 icons come up in my file manager program, one for the sdcard and one for the emmc.
I would think that you could copy the files you need from the emmc to your computer, then after you reload and reroot you could copy them back to their respective folders on the emmc.
Not ideal, but better than nothing.

[Q] Please help a noob in need!

Hi everyone! Please help me! I've spent most of the last 18 hours on this, rested, and have come back hoping to start today off positively.
I have a new "blue dot" nook with the new partitioning scheme. Not realizing that, I tried to install CM7 internally using a youtube video from huskermania (sorry, XDAforums will not let me link). All went fine, I assume, except for an error in Clockwork that read: Error: can't format /data" error. I believe, after researching, this is a result of the change in partitioning.
Frustrated that I had bricked my nook, and not really wanting to run an internal anyways so I can revert back to regular ROM if I want, I tried to unroot using directions from huskermania again. I really thought it had worked, but it is now stuck on the rainbow Nook Color screen, which will disappear and come back repeatedly.
Please help. My goal is to reinstall the original ROM, then try to install another using SD, but that's not my main priority right now.

Ok, success!!!! I cannot believe something finally worked. The 8 step reboot did not work, but using power, home, and +volume did.
I am saving the SD card I used to reboot this. Any thoughts on the best way to root a new "blue dot" nook using external so I don ever have this issue again? I know I need to change the partitioning, but I'm still not sure how, even after reading what Maurice Mongeon has to say in his post "how to repartition a blue dot nook color." Thoughts?

How exactly did you finally get it to work? I've done the exact same thing and I'm not sure what to do next. I have a refurbed NC that came with 1.2 installed and I rooted it with manualnooter and immediately flashed CM7.02 stable from CWM 3.0.2.8. It had all kinds of force close issues so I tried to restore to stock but keep getting stuck on the boot animation. I re-flashed CM7 and it still works but I still have all kinds of force close issues. When I try to format data in CWM it says can't format /data! I'm kind of at a loss right now...
UPDATE: Got it working. I had been using the wrong cwm...

Bricked Simple Touch after using TouchNooter

Hey guys,
I got a Nook Simple Touch Thursday evening. This morning, I powered it on and registered it on B&N. I imaged TouchNooter to a 2gb microSD via a microSD->SD adapter, inserted it into my Nook, and it brought the TouchNooter and the screen went dark successfully. However, since then, my device has been in a boot loop and all I can make it do is reboot. I ran the factory restore function built into it (Lower two buttons), but that did nothing.
I was planning to use the n2t recovery option in case this happened, but the links to it are dead. I tried CWM, but my Nook won't boot into it for some reason.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Did you make a backup image before you started?

You might want to try TouchFormatter. I used it successfully to recover from a failed rooting attempt.

When you have your nook restored, be sure to check what firmware version is on your nook before you try to root.
If you have US Nook with firmware 1.2 then you will need to use Tinynoot.
Be sure to make a back up of your nook before you try to root.

[Q] Have I bricked this Nook?

My father recently bought himself a Nook simple touch running 1.20 firmware on the promise that I would root it for him so he could borrow books from the local library using overdrive and also use Kindle. I have done similar with many devices in the past - installing custom firmware on Android tablets, jailbreaking iPHones (sorry to swear on here ) etc etc.
I read how easy it was to do and thought I would have no problems. Boy was I wrong!
I downloaded touchnooter 2.1.31 and wrote it to a micro sd card using a built in card reader on the PC and Win32 disc imager.
I put the card in the Nook and powered up. Everything happened as it should, the screen flashed to black etc etc. I took the card out and powered up. I got the "Your NOOK is starting up" message and then it just froze on that screen.
Holding the power and N button down reset it but it just went back to that screen. Eventually, though, for some reason on one of these cycles it reset itself.
So I set the machine up, and started again.
This time I restarted the whole process from scratch, put the card in the machine and powered up. This time, the screen never flashed to black at all, and I am not stuck at the "Your NOOK is starting up" screen. Trouble is, this time holding the power and n button down do nothing (they did a few times, but now nothing) and the machine seems completely dead.
My Dad aint going to be too happy if I've killed his Nook - so can anyone help me?
Or am I beyond help (don't answer that, )

You neglect to mention taking a backup before your attempts at rooting; are we to imply that you don't have one you can restore from?

Thanks for the reply. Oh dear. I read three different guides and not one of them mentioned that you could back up (I presume the Nook firmware itself) first?

You could preform a factory reset using the 6 failed boots method, I cant post links yet but if you do a search for "nook simple touch factory reset" you should instructions at nookdevs.
The NST has a nice feature of keeping a factory recovery partition that stores a factory.zip and will restore the NST using the above method.
Sometimes it takes quite a few tries for this to work, the timing has to be right. It will wipe everything (except the factory partition of course) and restore the nook to the how it was out of the box.

@norwichred: you might want to consider using the Touch-Formatter recovery tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475613. I had used it successfully to recover from a failed attempt at routing my NST.

Brick
Try holding the left and right buttons down Bottom ones at the sides of the screen when booting.
This should put it into restore to defaults mode.
This helped when I tried flashing with touchnooter. Ended up going back to defaults and then rooted with Nook Manager which went faultless.

Ok, firstly TouchNooter doesn't work with v1.20, you need to use GlowNooter. Don't worry, I found this out the hard way too. I actually found NookManager + GAPPSAttack gave the cleanest results.
Try holding down the power button for varying amounts of time, between 0 and 15 seconds, eventually you'll get it to reboot. You don't need to press the n button.

Guys - thank you SO much for your replies so far.
I have managed to reset the nook using your methods above, and am about to try again. I'll look into nook manager and glownooter. Is there a general opinion on which is better?

now , download the package from BN website (1.2.1) and apply manual update then ur nook will be 1.2.1 version then take Back up and make sure about 1.9GB and save it in safe place , and then play with ur nook as much as u want
PS: if u want root 1.2.1 nook software then use Nook Manager also if upgrade steps u cant get , tell me and i will replay u shortly

Ok so I have taken a backup and rooted using nook manager. I am waiting for his google password (he's changed it without telling me) so I can install GAPPSattack. Will this give me a nice desktop? At the moment I have a file explorer view and he won't understand that.

Try ADW Launcher with this theme
or this theme depending on the background colour.
If you don't like the icons you can turn them off under Themes/Customize.
The other launcher worth a try is 7 Launcher.
I've attached black and white image you might find useful.

well, it's all rooted and working now I am very grateful to ALL who have contributed to help me out here. Few things I'm not overly happy with so want to try and sort this out for him before I give it to him - want an easy way for him to get to a list of apps or to the nook homescreen using buttons but apart from that it's great.

for me
i had ADW launcher and Button savior that let me navigate to home screen in any time when i be on any app .... so try both and for ADW launcher home screen , easy to use and u can view all apps like u have android phone

[Q] Nook Color won't boot after cm7 install and update

I see that there are other posts on this same subject and I have looked through them to try and fix my problem but I haven't found a proper solution yet. I rooted my NC (1.4.3) cm7 and it worked alright after that but apps weren't available for the version so I attempted an update then reboot. I powered down and pulled the micro sd then powered up and it gets to "Read Forever" then goes black. I have tried cm10 with manual nooter in order to try and re-do the partition on the device but it won't do anything once I put the card in and try to boot. I have had to dis-assemble it so that I can pull the battery and get it to power down completely. I have tried a factory reset boot, sd card boot with auto nooter, manual nooter, cm7, cm10, and other options on the sd card, I have also tried to boot directly from internal memory. I have tried the process of plugging it into the computer through the usb cable. I have charged the battery completely so that isn't a problem.
I have read that it is virtually impossible to brick this thing but I think I might have succeeded....any input on what I can try next would be helpful...

You need to do a better job of describing your situation if you want help: how your NC was set up; exactly what you did that created the problem; what you want to end up with. At a guess, I will assume the you were running rooted stock on EMMC and CM7 on SD, decided to update CM7 to CM10, but used directions for updating CM that was installed to EMMC. I am not an expert on this, but sort of remember Leapinlar posting advice for someone (or maybe a few (?dozen?) someones) with this problem, you might want to search for those threads. If not, you have probably corrupted your boot records, recovery and/or possibly some partitions. Check out this thread by Leapinlar for help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759558

Here are the exact steps that I took to get to where I am:
I rooted the stock EMMC with the manual nooter to be able to get the Google Play Market, that worked well and I had access but the Android version was so old that I couldn't install the apps that I was after.
I then attempted to flash the EMMC to CM7, all status came up as pass and I rebooted. when it came up after the reboot all I got was the "Read Forever" screen.
since then I have read many different posts and tried to boot from the SD...that doesn't work, the screen just stays black
I have tried to boot to CWM to repair or rebuild the EMMC...same outcome
once I remove the SD all I get to is the "Read Forever" screen...
I have read and tried all the steps listed in every post you listed but they all have the same outcome
I have attached a pic of what the screen looks like when it tries to boot.

Hopefully someone more knowlegeable will look in, this is above my level. The fact that the Read Forever still displays shows that CM did not install correctly, if it's a newer version. You might want to try posting your problem in the same thread that you got the install instructions from.
