I am having a heck of a time tryingto flash a new rom onto my nexus s. I have downloaded MoDoCa and CM7 and put both .zip's on my SD card.
When i go to install via clockwork, its verifies the install and fails saying it cant find any of the packages. I left the files as a zip, i also extracted wthem within the same folder.
Im so lost why this wont work. Also the backup's i made before flashing dont wanna flash either. I can only get barebones 2.3. HELP!
Are you using version 3.0.0.0 or higher of Clockwork? That's one of the requirements on Modaco's ROM.
You should leave the Modaco rom as a zip. Put it in the root of your sdcard.
I think what's happening to you is that you're trying to flash it the wrong way.
In Clockwork, don't select the flash update.zip file, what you need to do is choose the menu option to flash a file from the sdcard. This puts you into a selection mode screen where you will navigate through the files and folders in the sdcard to the one you want to flash, then select it and flash away.
Have you tried it that way?
EDIT: P.S - you don't "flash" nandroid backup files, you restore them from the backup/restore menu option in Clockwork. You probably know that, but just making sure, since there shouldn't be an issue restoring them.
I was wondering if theres a stock rom zip file out there. I dont wanna take the s off or do a nano restore. That would work and still get OTa's.
There is a safe nandroid restore of a clean stock install in the dev section. It will not turn S on. Go to the dev section, it is in a sticky called "resource bible". The link is called "stock nandroid restore". Download the file from the links op and use it to perform a nandroid restore. You will then have a blank slate with S on.

hmmm gonna try it
but i was looking for a zip rom thats stock. then going thew the whole nano restore. i Did a nano restore before and it didnt do anything. it Just went to the mytouch screen. then stayed there. I then put the S back on and then did a nano restore and it worked. But i was wondering if theres anyone with a zip stock version. like that i can zip different roms and if i dont like em. i can always go back directly to stock. with out going threw the process of visionary and terminal em.

The restore I referred to will not break root and will allow you to flash roms. They're is a zip restore in the same section but that one does revert your bootloader so it essentially breaks root. The nand restore won't break root. The reason you were stuck at the loading screen is probably due to the version of clockwork recovery you have installed. You either need version 2.0.5.2 or the newest version 3.0.0.6 for the nandroid to work. Clockwork recovery v3.0.0.6 will let you flash between froyo and gingerbread roms so I suggest using that one. I'll bet you're on v3.0.0.2 or 3.0.0.5. Those versions won't boot froyo roms or nand restores.

Okay, so where to start...
I have a MT4G (of course) i love it dont get me wrongand wanted to mess around with it. i permarooted it via VISONary + and everything was working fine. i wanted to flash a different kernal and wanted to do a nandoird backup before i did anything else. but i needed clockwork to do this (correct me please if im wrong) so i downloaded rom manager flashed it. and went to boot into recovery and it does this icon with a phone and a "!" on the screen...it cant boot into recovery. and i dont know why, and now i just want to go back to my stock recovery but i cant cause i dont know how. ive tried terminal commands... and i tried to learn adb and fastboot but am very lost. basically i want a nandroid of my rooted stock ROM... any help would be much appreciated
The reason is because you need to turn s=off for any of those to work.

Read the guides.
1. The phone with the red triangle icon is from the stock Recovery program. Stock recovery does nothing except show you that screen, unless a special file is found on the SD card, used for a complete system restore. Your flash of ClockworkMod Recovery was unsuccessful.
2. When you do go get past the S=Off phase, and are ready to once again attempt to install CWM Recovery, be sure you install the CORRECT version. CWMR 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread (Android 2.3) based ROMs only! Don't install 3.0.0.5 expecting it to function properly for the Stock ROM, for Iced Glacier, or any other Froyo (Android 2.2) based ROMs. Those all require CWMR 2.x. A higher version number does not mean better. For example, if you are planning to install CM7, back up with CWMR 2.x, then flash CWMR 3.x before installing CM7.
(There is a special, unique to MT4G version of CWMR that handles both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, called "3.0.0.6". You can find threads on it in the Development subforum.)
Hey I downloaded a custom rom of these forums. I put it in the root of my sdcard with the name update.zip and booted into recovery and told it to install update.zip. I got an error saying the file didn't exist. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I thought that's how I did it with my Droid X
Custom ROM's need to use ClockworkMod recovery found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126364
Update.zip only works with stock factory Rom. For the most part anyway.
I use clockwork recovery and if I rename it to something other than update.zip i can't find it. It seems to use ROMs and clockworkmod as directories, I tried putting the zip in there and it doesn't show up in clockwork.
I purchased Acer Recovery 2.60 and use the 1.3.4 Recovery for backing up and flashing ROMs. IS there a need to upgrade to 1.7 CWM and will it work with Acer Recovery?
I don't use the CW recovery, but I believe the newest version does work with the Acer Recovery Installer. I believe you need to name it recovery.img and place it on the root of your SD card and the installer can find it and make the switch.
As to if you need to switch or not: I don't know. If your current recovery works for you and the new one offers no features you need then you probably don't need to.
