Google Drive Discussion - Epic 4G General

So for all of those who have tried out google drive, what do you think?
I have no issues dumping drop box but for now, I won't. It feels really clunky to me but I'm sure that will change over time.
My biggest beef with it right now, I can't select which folders to sync even though I picked a specific folder on the desktop G Drive app, it still shows up on android and there is no way to hide it. Very annoying that it syncs stuff that I don't want to see.
Secondly, I don't like how you can't save files from the G Drive app on android directly to the phone like you can with drop box. I use drop box heavily because I transfer files to and from my phone quite a bit (.zip files for flashing mods/tweaks/roms) This keeps me from having to plug in my phone every time I need to transfer files to and from my computer.
With G drive, I'm not able to do this. Unless I'm just overlooking it?
The first issue is just an annoyance, the second is a deal breaker for me.
I'll still use it for now but I'll still be utilizing drop box for the time being.
Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

I'd like to see the ability to auto upload pics like Dropbox has. This has saved me a few times!

Do you use google+ at all? I have that to auto sync all my pictures. Kind of redundant to use that feature for drop box so I don't.
I like to use G+ instead of drop box for folder because it automatically uploads it into picasa.

I still waiting on the email to say my Google Drive is ready.

G+/Picasa resizes them to 3MP (2048*1536) though, and with heavier compression too, you're losing a lot of detail if that's your only backup.

My problem with Google Drive is simple: I've never touched it, and only just heard about it yesterday, and yet somehow, mysteriously--nay, magically--it has appeared on my list of previously installed apps on the Play Store.
Screw that tactic, Google. You have the whole front page of the store to hawk your wares. Don't muddy my own library.

They transformed their google docs app to google drive. So if you already had the google docs app its logo changed and asks for an update

considering I have used G Docs regularly since 2004-2005, I really don't care what else they do to the Google Drive as long as they don't get rid of that basic functionality that they have always had and have done better than all competitors.
I do like the idea of uploading pictures, but do agree I would like it to be automatic like Dropbox. I realize G+ does it as well, but with pictures, especially if they are of children like 90% of mine are, can you have too many backups? I have my pictures uploaded everywhere.

It would be nice if all the Google products storage was all merged into drive. Access to your Picasa/google + photos, google music etc... just add all the space together.

I agree. That would be awesome to have everything in one place.

hmm
I just replaced my dropbox with Gdrive,.. w/o having used it at all, just thought I'd trust good ol' google. I'm seeing some quirks so far when it comes to syncing folders as it is still showing "sync" icon next to some files when the tray icon actually states that the syncing is complete. Definitely dropbox performs better at this moment imo.

Google's backup service works better on Xoom than Droids.

Replaced my Droid before and had to download apps again from scratch and everything, redo all my settings. But when I activated my Xoom, it downloaded all the apps on my phone to it, even copied over things like my browser history and my saved wifi passwords. (Kinda creepy actually but it was really convenient, so I give Goog as pass on this.)

I had no idea that this would happen, but after just exchanging my Xoom at BestBuy for a new one, I found the following after it ran through a google sync process:
All my apps are installed
WiFi settings / networks were maintained
Still looking around to see what else transfered to this unit, but given that I didnt expect that anything would, im pretty impressed. I dont recall ever telling the 1st device to do such things or initiated any backups.
that didn't happen for me, but i wish it did! how can I re-sync it now?

I think this has something to do with 3rd party customizations on the Droids and HTC handsets. I know when I flash a Sense ROM on my Evo 4G it does not automatically restore my apps. But if I flash an AOSP ROM, they do. Xoom's Gingerbread is basically AOSP, just a tablet version.
My Droid touchscreen is broken and consequently has been wiped a few times recently and I have noticed the recent improvements. I loved it when I turned the WIFI on my Xoom at home it automatically had the settings.

Must admit my nexus one has been doing that since I got it - i.e. when flashing a new ROM (which is all we do on nexus's ) Google sync would download my wifi settings including passwords. Very useful, but not very new. Maybe it was a Droid limitation.
I think tha'ts an AOSP thing. I flashed my Evo to CM7 and the same happened (and yes the wifi thing was pretty creepy lol)
How do I turn on the Google Backup for Android? Is it just from Google Sync?

Very BIG help though I have to admit....
That's one of my favorite things about Android. When I upgraded from the G1 to the Nexus One it did that. And again when I went from the Nexus One to my current G2. It's definitely something stock Android features. I remember I was surprised the first time it happened. And the wifi setting restore is awesome.

Home screen customization settings aren't backed up
Google's Backup remembers a lot of settings, but it never backs up the Home screen settings.
It takes awhile to add all my shortcuts and widgets to the five home screens, so I wish Google could remember those, as well.
Hope it's included in the next batch of fixes.
my droid x does the same thing when i flash new roms. it has nothing to do with the xoom
So Google has the wifi passwords of everyone using Android 2.2+ who turns this service on? Seriously?
What about RADIUS? Are they storing per-user authentication tokens too?

Not sure why that should seem so alarming. If you use the Google device restore option the you already have an account with Google. Google therefore has your account password. Shock horror! If like me you also use Google checkout then Google also has your credit card number. Wifi is the last of our worries .

Owning multiple Android devices

Silly question but here goes...
I currently have a Nexus One and I'm planning on buying a XOOM next month (wifi only)
question is: can I log into my XOOM with my current google account (used by my N1) and choose what apps to sync etc.. or will I have to create a new google account entirely, just for the XOOM?
Basically, can you be on 2 android devices at once with the same username from google, or not? Cuz I know if you change phones, you just login and it will re-download apps, bookmarks, settings etc.... but will it recognize the fact that you're on a tablet and sorta create 2 profiles?
You only need one Google account. All of your purchased applications will transfer over and you will have the ability to pick and choose what you'd like to install on either device. From my experience, the auto restore for apps and the rest of your data only occurs when you are using the same device, but I could be wrong. For reference, I'm using an LG Optimus for work and a Nexus S for my personal device.
You only need one account. I'm using my N1 and i have a rogers captivate for work and i can sync everything on both phones. It's great to only have to pay once for my apps and use them on a different phone.
You can definitely do that. I have 3 phones synced to my Google account right now.
The web based Android market seems enabled for just this. It will differentiate devices and you can "send" an app to your specific device.
My guess is its not a problem as Android tablets have been around for months now.
Purchased apps can be used on my phone and tablet. The auto restore seems to be device type specific because when I got a loaner MyTouch 4g, it installed everything that was on my N1 automagically (a little surprising).
On the tablet, purchased apps showed up as purchased, but nothing auto downloaded.
My tablet is Archos so it is not official market supported like the Xoom so it would be interesting to find out about the auto restore but I doubt it will.
Market seems to be pretty good about device type identification.

The other thing that seems to impact whether or not apps are restored automatically is when you put in your Google account during the activation process. It seems that all of my devices will restore my apps if I put it in immediately after flashing a new ROM or doing a full wipe, but if I skip that process and add it later, the apps are not restored.
Either way, the device will recognize what you've purchased and will automatically sync contacts, calendar, etc. if you choose it to.
We should ask in the xoom section... I just ordered one too and am kinda interested in how this works.

It's not a 'real' tablet experience, per se, but I just activated a second android device on my account. I've been using CM7 on my N1. I loaded a CM7 ROM onto a Nook Color yesterday, and almost all of my market apps came down when I signed in, many of them with settings intact. Both devices are displayed on the My Account -> Settings page on the web market.
I've been managing the app loads on each device separately. So far I have not noticed any cross-contamination of apps or settings from one device to the other. Contacts have remained synced up the whole time.

when I setup my Xoom yesterday i used the same account as on my mesmerize and it synced
Things like contacts from gmail, emails, and calendar, pretty much the usual google apps.. As far as the other apps, they did not sync in three slightest. The apps which I've paid for show up in my apps so i can download them but they do not do it automatically and I've had to manually download each one and set whether it auto updates or not. As for the other apps
Not a single one even showed as having been on my phone. I guess the rule of thumb is if its a paid app, it will be possible to manually install it from my apps but free apps do not at all carry over.
this is my experience and certainly there is room for improvement... There are apps out there that can do this for us, market quick links is one of those I think. It backs up links for the installed apps so they can be quickly installed on an(other) device...

I noticed when I was purchasing docs to go that it said it would only work on one device at a time, but i think that unless otherwise specified in the apps tos that it should work for all apps but that some companies want to force a second buy for each device even though I can only user one at a time... Greedy aorta sorta and makes me not wanna use apps like that to discourage devs from taking such actions..

I have an N1 and just got a viewsonic g tab. None of my apps automatically installed on the tab using the same google account, but I can confirm that my purchased apps were in the list. If you have a ton of free apps and don't want to dig through the market for them all, you can use a backup app to back them up on your N1 and then copy them over to the tab and restore the ones you want. This saved me a lot of time.

Was there an app for this already on the A500 ? Yesterday evening I turned on the tablet and right away it had an update from google music. I never noticed the widget before until I saw the update.
Right, the app is already on our tablets (which I linked to a few posts up) and if you visit the market, it might even tell you to update it - however the service - the cloud storage part - is by invite.
So, while you can use the app, it's local only.

I tried that approach but it only registers once and says only registered... Music is my favorite passtime it would make things alot easier
...
I got my invite today. I registered for it as soon as the invite link went live the day of Google I/O. I'm here at work so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I did active it though and when you're in activating it, it gives you the option of some free songs depending on the genre you like. Hopefully I can upload some of my music tonight and have a full report on this later.
Sounds good. Grats.
Even though I requested an invite, I won't use the service. I have all my music on my tab.
I got my invite yesterday. Deleted the free songs (um no thanks for the 100 songs I won't listen too).
There is a limit to 20,000 songs, found out yesterday my entire library is 29,000 plus songs.
Takes FOREVER to upload songs, BUT surprisingly there is WMA support in the cloud. They must be re-compressing stuff during the upload.
It's a pretty cool thing, but Audiogalaxy is MUCH faster.

Yeah, except for the whole 5GB limit. Google Music has a 20k song limit...

Who else got invited to Google Music Beta?

From the e-mail I got from Google, I've aparently been invited because I own the Xoom 3g, and am currently paying for 3g service from Verizon.
But whatever the reason, I got the invite.
I still haven't recieved the update for my Xoom yet, and I don't think you can get the Music app in the app store until the update, so i've been forced to try the beta in "Browser" which is a bunk.
As far as desktop goes, it works well, but on the Xoom, it lags a little, and will only play the music if the tab for the player is open. (which really I guess is to be expected, and why there is an app for it.)
Regardless, it is quite simple to use, and in itself, is a very simple layout. There isn't really anthing special, it reminds me of itunes (as far as strictly listening to music, not including the store and all the extra jazz.) They have what they call "Instant Mixes" which is pretty much the genious mix in apple, except it will only create a 25 song playlist.
One nice thing about it, is whatever player you choose it to upload your songs with, it carries over the playlists.
There is a "New and Recent" section beside Album, Song, Genre, and Artist like on the Xoom. Also, a small but nice selection of free songs that you can choose to have imported into your cloud when you sign in the first time.
I really will have to wait till I can test the app to make any final decisions on this.
As far as I'm concerned, cloud based music storage is pretty much useless to me. I can survive with 5-10 gigs stored onto my Xoom that I can listen too without ever needing to connect to the internet. (I don't need to use my 10$ a gig data from verizon for something that should be free) Once we get our SD slot working, this will become especially true. It is cool to be able to have your music anywhere in the world, but not if you think that you have to pay Google for this service, then pay for the data while using the service.
But I will go at it with an open mind for anyone that would find this of interest, because well, I guess it's part my duty since I recieved an invite. If you also recieved an invite please let me know what you think about it.
I got in the beta as well. The biggest thing for me when it comes to cloud music is not worrying about transferring music to my devices or computers anymore. I'm always worried about backing up my music and syncing across all my computers. Now if I reformat any of my devices be it tablet, phone or laptop I can get my music from anywhere and redownload it if needed.

See, I don't think you will get an invite just for owning a xoom..... Here is exactly how the e-mail inviting me was phrased (Please note, i did not sign up for an invite, i just got it)
Hello Motorola XOOM user,
We'd like to tell you about some changes to the Music player on your tablet. The latest app update now supports Music Beta, a new service from Google. As a Verizon Motorola XOOM user, you’ve been extended an early invitation to beta test this service.
Music Beta lets you store your personal music collection online and access it instantly without the hassle of wires or syncing.
Enjoy your music anywhere — listen on any web browser, your Motorola XOOM, or any other device running Android 2.2 or higher.
Save your favorite albums, artists, and playlists on your smartphone or tablet so you can keep listening even when you're not connected.
Create your own custom playlists or build them automatically from a single song.
Note also that is says Verizon Motorola XOOM user... I guess this could be explained by any 3g model, but I actually have my data active, so I imagined that's why I received the invite.

Not that I can see. I have yet to receive the 3.1 update, but I received the invite, signed up, and also downloaded the updated Music app from the market. I haven't uploaded any songs yet, but I can stream the two dozen or so tracks they gave me for free. Works well, pretty simple, audio quality is actually pretty decent - on the Xoom speakers, haven't tested on my Sennheiser headphones though.

Oh, so it's just an update to the stock music player I need?
I have active data on my 3G xoom w/ Verizon also, so it's weird they would pull random people, but I guess that may not be weird. I have 3.1 on my xoom after doing the force push update from BRD. I also have the new beta music app on both my tablet and my phone lol. I have not received an invite though...What I do like is the ability to get movies through the Android Market but I don't think that's part of this?
Oh well then
I pay for 3G service on my Xoom as well, and I haven't gotten an invite, or the dam update!
lol
Should be noted my 3g xoom has never had vzw service and I got the xoom invite email.

Well I guess they're doing some kind of random invite...
So i guess a good question is, have any WiFi Xoom owners gotten the email with out requesting an Invite?
At I/O, Google said that Music was a beta program with a limited audience initially: all attendees got an invite. There are two components: the new player, and the backend service. I believe they are independent of one another, such that you can download the Music Beta app in the Market but still not be admitted to the beta of the service.
Apologies if this was all already obvious: I just wanted to clarify for folks in case it wasn't clear as there are a few moving parts.

I believe you are correct. Anyone can download the updated Music app from the Market, but unless you got an invite and signed up, you can't use the whiz-bang features of the Music beta service.
On both my EVO and Xoom, I was able to update the app and signed into it thanks to the invite I received.
Ya I have activated 3g Xoom on Verizon so I am unsure as to WTF is going on lol
I have the 3G Xoom but do not pay for the service, and I've had it since day 1. I'm not rooted, and I have not received the 3.1 update yet.
I requested an invite for Music before the keynote Monday with my main gmail account. I have 2 other accounts tied to my xoom, but I initially signed into my xoom with my main account.
About 30 minutes ago, I got an invite to Music in one of the secondary accounts tied to my Xoom (one I did NOT request an invite with).
Currently uploaded about 500 songs, about 18k to go. This is exciting!
Now I just need my 3.1!

Well however they're doing it, I'm glad I got the invite as it works quite well. I don't know about other cloud services as I have not tried them, but the way all the music stored on the cloud and all that is stored on your XOOM blend together in the same app is sweet.
Unfortunately I am still waiting on my update. I just wanted to add that.
Got two invite e-mails (24 hours apart) so ok. But no 3.1 update.

NFC - Found Any Use For It?

I was wondering if any found any real good use of the NFC or the Google wallet app. I have $10 from signing up, and am thinking about going over to 7-11, but it is weird when on the MasterCard finder, it says there is NFC checkout and you don't want to seem like an idiot trying to check out.
So little use for it I have NFC what to use it for.
No Wallet here in Australia and no other NFC devices for me.

For my work I made posters advertising our Facebook page we set up, I put NFC tags in the posters with a little tap here logos on. Works well, loads your web browsers and takes you to the Facebook page. All companies need to do the same!

I have a few nfc chips (compliments of tagsfordroid) I've got a key chain tag that I use when I leave the house, it disables wi-fi, enables gps and bluetooth, increases ring tone volume. All the little things that take a few minutes of my time are now simplified with the tap of a tag! I also use nfc for other various tasks and it's proven to be very helpful

It would be so much simpler and have a far greater reach if you just had a QR code in it.
Using NFC for just a website seems a total waste to me.

The only thing I saw with it, was that it can'y verify payments immediately unless it's connected. I have tried twice. Once at Best Buy, failed because the systems don't work. Second at 7-11 and it worked but it doesn't say whether it took the money ou, because I didn't have it connected.
for a good list of usage examples of NFC go to the comment section of this post

Some are standard some are pretty original.
I've used nfc only for transferring photos from phobia to tablet since I don't auto sync them with a cloud storage. Beats having to do a few more clicks thru bluetooth

After going to the play store and searching for "phobia" i realized it must have been autocorrect.

Had this happen too at McDonalds and 7-11, but then again it would let me purchase regardless. The money would end up being pulled from a credit card later, so no big deal here.
I believe Starbucks accepts NFC and Google wallet? Maybe I'll pop in there and try.

I thought places just had to accept NFC, or Mastercard's PayPass thing, and not specifically Google Wallet?
I like to take an nfc chip with me where ever i go and find ladies with nfc capable phones and put my contact in their phone all ninja-like and then just be casual and say "aye bay bay, call me sometime" and when shes like "i dont have your number" i tell her to look at her phone and her panties instantly become soaked.
you guys should try it some time.
