Well, I did it. Ported my number to T-Mobile. Poorer signal in some places, but I get consistent 4Mbps at my desk at work.
So.... I'm going to pretty much retire from maintaining this OP.
If someone wants to start a new thread with a similar format, go for it. If not I'm willing to come in here and try to do a quick update once in a while. It's not like things are moving as fast as they used to anyway, and the appspot changelog is great for displaying what is going on.

With HDMI out there are some cool possibilites for the Evo. One of the best examples is in a thread started by Lokifish Mars: Use your Evo as a Desktop PC
There are tons of great theme engine themes. Many on the market and some only available on XDA. But since I'm a self serving biased jerk who unfairly looks out for his friends, I've got to mention the Sculpted theme from Shift. I loved Sculpted on CM6, but the version he created for CM7 is incredible, and all you have to do is grab it from the market, and then choose it in Theme Chooser.
Everyone's favorite something-goat-something-Shift-hater Karadorde dropped a little ray of nightly flashing sunshine in our lives. It's a recovery flashable script similar to Calkin's flash all that just flashes cache and dalvik for those times you've gotta have your nightly fix, but don't feel like setting everything up again. Check out his thread for instructions, and download the script there or here: nightly wipe zip
rstuckmaier has basically been doing my job for me recently, and created a thread just for CM7 fixes, tweaks, and work-arounds.
WiMax support is built into CyanogenMod 7. HDMI mirroring is supported in the kernel, but you will need an app to turn on mirroring. You can grab HDMwIn from the market. After trying it out, please support further TeamWIN projects by buying the donate version.

Please bear in mind this is a nightly build, meant to be a testing ground for developers, and there may even be times the new nightly won't work at all. This is a common way of working in open source software. Most of the problems you are encountering the developers are already aware of. With that said, most of the nightly builds has been very solid and stable for many people here, and several of us that are used to development software are using it as a daily driver. Just realize that is not the intention of nightly builds.
CM6 features not available & Bugs
Camera does not have touch to focus and some other features from CM6
Bluetooth Mouse cursor - BT mouse will connect, but acts more like a trackball. See the Use your Evo as a Desktop PC thread for a patch.
No 720p video recording
GPS often will not lock. Cyanogen said he is working on a fix for a point release. Basically the non-open source HTC drivers were used in CM6, but for CM7 they are using the open source reference drivers from the chip manufacturer. Something is strange or maybe even buggy about the Evo hardware. The good news is there is a workaround that has worked for most people.
Note - this is pasted from rstuckmaier's excellent tips thread
Make a Nandroid of your current CM7 setup.
Boot into recovery and perform a full wipe (or use Calkulin Format ALL zip)
Flash any Sense ROM
Open the Market and download MSL Reader, write down MSL.
Open Dialer/Phone and type ##4772579# (##GPSCLRX#)
When it asks you for a password type in your MSL
Reboot phone
BE OUTSIDE
Turn on GPS and open Maps, allow it to fully lock your location (may take a few minutes, do not just wait for initial lock).
Leave GPS on
Turn off phone, reboot into recovery.
Nandroid restore your CM7 backup
Installation Info
You must be fully rooted (including NAND rooted)

After flashing the main part of CM, you will probably want to flash the Google Apps Add-On, which adds the Market and allows you to download things like GMail, Goggles, Voice Search, and Maps. Gapps is available here: http://goo-inside.me/google-apps/
There are now only two versions of GApps, one for Tegra CPUs and one for non. For the Evo you want the standard version without Tegra support
GApps changed for CM7 and only has the basics for market access. When you first log in you will be given a screen of checkboxes to download the apps you want. You can also add them manually later from the market.
DrMacinyasha's goo-inside.me is the official source for GApps, and also mirrors most of the other content:

What features are included
Full AOSP
Running 2.6.37 Linux kernel
Android OS 2.3.3 (Gingerbread)
More standard Bluetooth stack. HTC uses a funky proprietary bluetooth implementation. Cyanogen has replaced this with a more common one, so the phone now supports HID (Mice & Keyboards) and the Wiimote app in the store.
Tons of Cyanogen Mod tweaks and tools, including but not limited to:
Updated music app with extra options and lockscreen controls
kernel speed tweaks
Notification Drop down power control
CyanogenMod Settings integrated into settings menu
DSP settings
T-Mobile theme engine
Torch flashlight uses camera flash, includes widget
Additional settings and tweaks for Contacts, Dialer, and MMS (maybe more)
FAQQ. When the new nightly comes out can I just download and flash over the top of the install?
A. Because these are development nightlies they are not guaranteed to work in this way. In many cases this may work fine, but even if it does it may not implement a new feature or fix. For example the MMS fix would not show up unless you wiped, or deleted a specific directory. However, this usually works ok.
Q. What has changed in the newest nightly build?
A. For me the easiest thing has been to follow the CM Source twitter feed. Pretty much any change that doesn't mention another device specifically will show up on the nightly.
Look here for Cyanogen's changes: http://github.com/cyanogen
and here for CyanogenMod in general: http://github.com/CyanogenMod
Q. Flash isn't working
A. Go to the market, search for "Flash Player" and install.
Q. I don't have a Market icon or any other google apps
A. You didn't flash gapps or flashed the wrong one
Q. Rom Manager won't let me download the nightly
A. Purchase the premium version from the Market
Q. Why is the launcher slow?
A. It isn't really, but the defaults used on ADW make it feel sluggish. Try some of the settings from this post by midri
Q. How can I update PRL?
A. There currently is not a way to do it in Cyanogen Mod. You will need to restore a nandroid backup of a Sense ROM (you did make one, right?), update the PRL, then Nandroid back to CM6.
Q. What times are the nightly builds? And what time in my timezone?
A. To my understanding, the bot begins building at Midnight UTC which is 8:00pm EST. They finish around 30 mins later. You can always check this link and verify that the mod date is the next day (for us in the U.S.) In otherwords, It's currently 10:50pm EST on 7/10 and the mod date on the zip file is 2010-Jul-11 00:35:56 so I know it has been built:
http://mirror.kanged.net/cm/nightly/supersonic/
Q. Rom Manager says there are no updates
A. Since these are nightly builds and not releases, the filename stays the same and Rom Manager knows you have a rom named that already. If you want to assure you have the latest, clear your download cache and re-download.
Q. Can I install the Sense dialer/music player/widgets/etc. ?
A. By default no. Sense widgets only work with the Rosie launcher. Most of the other stuff it tightly bound to the framework, which is why many of the AOSP applications can not be easily installed on a Sense ROM.
Q. Is there any way to run the stock android 2.3 launcher instead of ADW?
A. Search the market for "gingerbread launcher." There are several available for free.
Q. My notification toggles keep disappearing! Where did they go?
A. Often changing themes will cause this. Just grab the Notification Restart app in the market. It basically just kills the notification bar so it resets.
Please feel free to add any that I missed, but hopefully we don't get repeats of the same answered questions or known bugs. I hope this makes things easier for everyone to know what's going on.
Thanks again for your hard work, Cyanogen, Toast, #teamwin, and all of the CyanogenMod Team!
Thanks for the thread!

I'm getting a green bar (graphical glitch) at the top during video playback.
Getting it on videos using the YouTube app, and also on some MP4 movies on my sdcard. Happens no matter what video player I use.
Oddly enough, videos that I had recorded with the Evo camera do not have this.
Is it just me? or anyone else having this issue also?
As far as the Facebook, I cannot add my facebook account. The first time it asked for info and appeared to work, but if I go back into Accounts it's not there and I can't seem to add it.
I downloaded Swype beta from the site and it's working fine for me.

Yup, same here, 003 with nova and seeing the green bar. But, mine switched between purple and green at first, then switching to just green. But weirdly,I've only seen the bar watching hq videos on youtube. Regular movies don't have that....odd.
Would it not be better to use a bug tracking software, even a free one to keep the info sorted?
also have green bar, hw3, novatek panel. don't have it in videos i've recorded. it may just be a function of the youtube app, nothing to do with cm
Another bug.
When you go to cm settings > input settings> haptic feedback tweaks > change any of the patterns ...cm settings force closes

When the new nightly comes out can I just download and flash over the top of the install so I dont have to start from scratch tomorrow?
heres a question:
is there anyway to get the htc dialer app back on this rom, or is that part of sense, if so can you please link up a apk?
so does this mean that there will be a new build every night from now on or what.
Fring works on WiFi with no problems but FC's when on 3g.
Turn Exposure to +1 on front camera to make it not so dark.

if i understand it correctly, it will be recompiled every night. however, if no code changes were made during the day, before compile, then the nightly won't be any different than the one before.
Also Exchange support in Froyo does not work reliably. This is not a bug in the mod, but in Froyo itself.

Bingo. Changes may be EVO specific or may be generic to all devices. This is why nightlies are not reliable, they are simply a snapshot of the code at the moment. I read a comment that sounded like one of the changes made for the EVO broke the Droid build. Don't think of these as general use builds like we see from DC, Avalaunch, etc. When there is an RC or final, cyanogen typically will post that here.

Thread updated 17/01/2011 (d/m/y) to include FlyKernel 12a and a download for AngryBirds 1.3.5 for those who needed it. thread has also been cleaned up and old content removed. Instructions have been updated accordingly. Please let me know of any bugs or tweaks that need to be made.
Install for fully working Android Gingerbread Keyboard and newest Market at the bottom of this post!
This is a collection of packages that can be found around these forums that I believe amounts to the perfect Hero Setup. I am NOT a developer (although I have been known to make some themes and do some graphics work in the past), and I do not claim to have created any of this content. Instead what I am bringing you is a kind of gathering of the choicest picks from the Hero development forums, as well as the CyanogenMod 6.1 Final base. Most of this post is entirely optional, so this will allow you to build your own device, based on your preferences. Leave out things you feel you do not want, or add in extra steps if you feel you need them. Either way this will allow granular control of your Hero, for you to set it up just the way you want.
If nothing else this should be treated as a learning experience, if however you are unsure, and the post below looks a little daunting, you should consider flashing Floyo (created by the very talented erasmux) which is a complete packaged ROM. A lot of the content here has been taken from offerings that he has made available.
I take no responsibility for you destroying your phone. But for ME, my Hero is now the fastest it has ever been, with much better signal (and hugely faster browsing speed) with a theme I really love. So, presuming your Hero is already rooted, do a FULL wipe of everything, and then:
1) Flash Cyanogen Mod 6.1 FINAL in recovery (no need to reboot yet).
2) Flash Cyanogen Google Apps Addon.
3) Reboot your phone, log in and go through the initial setup. Once this is completed, reboot into recovery again.
4) (UPDATED) Flash Flykernel 12a (HUGE thanks to erasmux, this kernel is amazing). The version linked here is the one I have found to work best with this particular Hero setup (352-576, as such this is not overclocked, but performs exceptionally on my hero and doesn't have the annoying wake up issue, info on how to rename the file to overclock the kernel can be found at the erasmux flykernal post if you wish to do so). NOTE: Do NOT use the "-noatime" switch as this caused reboot loops for me in CM6.1.
5) Flash this notifications fix (provided by erasmux) which should fix some slightly hinky notification issues (jogball etc). This should now not be required with the newest Cyanogen build, I will do more testing and completely remove this section if this is confirmed.
6) Boot phone and let it get to the homescreen.
7) Reboot into recovery for the final time.
8) Flash The Latest Radio from this thread.
9) Reboot the phone (this may take a while after the radio installation).
OPTIONAL SETTINGS!
10) If you like using the HTC_IME mod, you can install it by manually installing the Clicker and then THIS version of the HTC_IME mod created using the AMAZING theming tool provided by gIMpSTa. I have created a theme that suits the feel of this CM6.1 based ROM using his tool, and it is working perfectly on my phone.
11) Enable JIT by going in to Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Performance Settings > TICK "Use JIT" - And then reboot your phone (You can turn this off if you have issues with it turned on). In the latest Cyanogen 6.1 FINAL JIT is working perfectly, so unlike with RC1, I would now recommend having this turned ON!.
12) If you have issues fixing GPS sats, or if GPS does not update correctly when using it to navigate etc then you can try flashing THIS FIX (GPS libraries taken from FroydVillain and provided by erasmux as a fix for his Floyo ROM). If you are having issues actually fixing satellites you can also try flashing either the Europe, US or Asia sat-packs which can help GPS lock speed in your continent (if everything is already fine, you might want to avoid flashing these). Personally, I DO NOT use GPS on my device, so I can't comment on how well any of this works, but erasmux really knows his stuff, so I'm sure it will work if you are having problems.
13) CM6.1 comes with the NEW (official) Apps2SD built-in. However, the app needs to support this method or it will not allow you to move the app to the SD card. For those of you that prefer to use the OLD STYLE Apps2SD you can download it and flash it separately to enable this feature on this build of CyanogenMod.
That's the main setup sorted. You MAY have an issue with the Market following the radio installation (I did). If this happens, follow the instructions in this thread, the first fix (clearing the data) worked for me.
OK! Now on to apps. There are a few apps that really are a must if you want your Hero to both look and feel smooth as silk. So head over to the market, and download the following:
1) LanucherPro (Cyanogen comes with ADW, but I MUCH prefer LauncherPro). I use the XTG mod created by signals23 which has much more attractive widgets (if you have purchased the LP-Plus edition (I strongly recommend you do). You can, of course, use ANY homescreen, but LP is definitely my choice for beauty and speed. I actually DELETED ADW using: adb shell - rm /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk once I had LauncherPro installed, so it was no longer on the phone at all.
2) Beautiful Widgets - You have to pay for this, but trust me, it is absolutely worth the small amount of money. Once you have it, you can install any clock theme you like, such as SwirlClock made by yours truly
3) SMS Popup. Seriously, this app is amazing. Go into the default messages app, and turn off notifications. then head into the SMS Popup settings, and go into additional settings, turn ON "Quick Reply" and turn OFF "Screen on for Popup".
3) Youlu Address Book. I no longer recommend DialerOne on the Hero, as I find it too slow, especially when using the T9 "Dialer Search" function to call contacts using the numeric keypad. I find Youlou to be much faster, with a nice interface with an easy to navigate tabbed UI.
4) Advanced Task Killer. Once installed, open it up, turn off the notification bar icon in settings, and add your most frequently used apps to the ignore list (so the killer always leaves them running for speedy access). I usually leave: Messaging, Email and DialerOne in the ignore list.
5) SyncMyPix. Lets you properly sync your facebook contacts pictures so that they show up in DialerOne and LauncherPro.
6) Facebook app, or, whatever
7) Photoshop Express. I only add this here because there is no way of uploading multiple images to Facebook using the standard "Gallery" app, but you can do this using Photoshop Express, pretty nice little app, but this feature makes it worth having.
8) THEME! If you want to change the stock theme from white to black, go to: Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > User Interface > Tweaks Extras > Select a Theme and change your theme to STOCK_Black and then reboot your phone. This makes all of the theme a very nice gloss black effect WITHOUT having to flash a seperate theme ROM over Cyanogen (which is a much better way of doing things, as you are not replacing the newer .apk's with older, themed ones... Yes, I know the browser icon kinda sucks, but you can always download the nicer icon .png from here
9) Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Keyboard. If you want to install this keyboard, it will overwrite the existing Android 2.2.1 Keyboard (and currently there is no way of going back). The Gingerbread keyboard is FULLY FUNCTIONAL, this version now has working dictionary and autocorrect. You CAN still use the HTC_IME keyboard with this installed though, so if you hardly use the stock Android keyboard anyway, there shouldn't be much harm installing it and giving it a shot. HERE it is for those of you that just can't wait
10) The newest Android 2.2.6 Market. Flash in recovery, tested working great on my Hero, very lovely interface and nice and fast
11) (NEW) Angry Birds 1.3.5. for those of you who were wondering how I got angry Birds to run pretty well on the Hero, use this version rather than the latest one available on the market
DONE. Of course, you can modify this in any way you like, but after completing all of this you will have your own, pieced together ROM, without any strange extras or crap you don't really need. On top of this, you can head in to the ROM manager that comes with Cyanogen and install ClockworkMod recovery (if you are still using an older Amon-Ra or something), which is nice and easy.
Also, I'm not joking. It's fast... The screenshot below is with common apps (messages, emails, dialerone) running, and I still have 86mb of free memory. The battery life is fantastic, signal is great, call speed, wifi locking etc all seem faster than I have had them before. So, let me know your results (I have not tested GPS!).
And there yo go, your own freshy squeezed Hero, complete with all the trimmings. Baste lightly in your own choice of apps and serve.
Zeb
This post will be updated as newer packages are released.
</walloftext>
interesting, thanks. There's also an ADW-remover script on the Floyo page.
I didn't realise people were theming LauncherPro widgets to that extent, will have to investigate!
m8 you have done about 90% of the changes that i have put to my hero.
definitely is the perfect setup for me too.

If you are coming from VR12 you will have to do a FULL wipe of everything (nand, battery setting, dalvik etc) in recovery before flashing all of these packages. So make sure you have backed up everything you want to keep before starting! I have no idea what effect flashing this stuff over an existing ROM will have as I did it all from scratch with a blank phone.
The Radio is possibly the riskiest aspect of this setup, and you can choose to leave it out alltogether if you wish, but for me this made possibly the largest difference, as everything from connecting to Wifi, switching back to 3G/HSPDA is much faster. Signal is better, and small things like initialising the dialler (the time it takes from me choosing to call a contact, to it actually ringing) feels much speedier, so I personally do recommend it! You don't need to use this Radio to use Flykernel 11c, so feel free to leave it out if you wish.
Zeb
Edit: I just noticed, do you mean, can you use Flykernel on it's own with VR12 without any of the other stuff? Yes, I believe you can, check you the Flykernel thread for more information, but I think it works for most ROMs.

If you flash only the kernel, you don't need to do anything else - No wipe at all necessary. Updating the radio is not related to the update of the kernel but still recommended as usually it also improves the hero experience and if there are problems you can always go back
I just received my refurbished hero (the digitalizer was dead) and am trying your setup. So far everything on the setup side was fine though I had a random reboot after flashing the kernel.
I will update with my feelings on this setup, thx for the guide!
I like this post ... what are the advantages of elelinux or floyo over the standard CM 6.1 release though? I tend to go for one of those instead for some reason!

I believe that the authors of these releases make modifications to the kernel, as well as making theme changes, adding packages of their choice etc. Some distributions are modified more than others (and not ALL of them use Cyanogen as a base I believe). You'd have to look at the specifics of those other ROMS to see exactly what is different (sometimes it's small things, such as the way the jog-ball flashes or how the LED behaves, and sometimes it's bigger, like having hacked settings, or adding otehr keyboards like the HTC_IME mod (which Cyanogen doesn't have as standard, but I prefer the android keyboard anyways). You can always add these things in yourself later if you know how, which is what I have chosen to do using this setup. this way you have complete control over what is added to your phone.
Also, Flykernel, and the Radio mentioned here have serious performance benefits over other offerings as far as I am concerned. you COULD just flash those two over the ROM of your choice, but doing things the way I have mentioned above just gives you a larger level of granular control, if thats what you really want that is
Also, I have wanted to use Cyanogen as a base for a while to see how it was, but I found it very hard to find decent documentation on how to set it up correctly, that is why, once I worked it out, I decided to post the method I used here for other people to try.

No problemo! Just as a side-note, the kernel that COMES with Cyanogen 6.1 seems good enough, but I had problems with waking the phone up (sometimes I had to push the power button 3 or 4 times to get to the unlock screen). This is a pretty standard issue with a lot of kernels where the minimum clock speed is a little too low and the phone doesn't quite rev up enough when waking up. So, if using CM6.1 as a base (as posted above) Flykernel is a must (using the clockspeeds I posted above), as it removes this issue entirely and boosts overall performance.

agree for the configuration, is the best(for now )
however, instead of sms popup i use handcent sms, the application is very similar to the application of the iPhone, and has a built-in sms popup...try it!

Nice addition, thanks! I have used ChompSMS before, but I really like the messaging app in Android 2.2, so I prefer to stick with that and use SMS Popup to handle the quick reply (which is an awesome feature). Also, the theme I posted skins the SMSPopup notification screen to fit with the rest of the device, to it looks extra good and as though it was really all put together into a proper ROM package.
I haven't tried Handcent myself but I have heard good things about it, so yea, probably worth a try if you aren't keen on the stock SMS app!

Personally, I much prefer this method! That's why I made this thread! Give it a try, if you don't like it you can always wipe the phone nice and easy and install Floyo!

Any chance you can add some of the settings you use, like cyanogen or spare parts settings? I followed your guide completely and its pretty fast but i think enabling JIT might help but im too afraid to try. Thank you
Post updated to reflect current version.
OK.. I'm mainly posting this here because my PC is too low to post in the dev thread.. and I think its best to leave that thread to dev discussion...
First impressions:
Installs quite smoothly and pretty fast.
My install method (in case its needed later)
- Back up and copy to pc
- Complete wipe to stock gb. Root gb and install cwm
- Copy ressurection 8.1 zip to SD card
- Reboot to cwm
- Format data/cache, dalvic cache, system and battery stats
- Reboot to cwm
- Select resurrection 8.1 zip and install. Takes about 5 min
- Reboot to recovery and factory reset (probably not needed but did it to be safe)
- Reboot normally and let system boot up. Takes 3-5 min on first boot
Now on to the fun stuff... on first boot I set up language, clock wifi account etc.
I selected and only use nova... I like it better than trebuchet.
Gmail notification crashes Google accounts right off the bat. This is persistent throughout 3 installs. Seems to work fine after initial crash.
Once SD card scanning and such finishes, i disable fast dormancy (*#*#9900#*#* for menu) thenI reboot normally.
Open market, works fine.. install some primary apps... titanium backup & pro key.. better battery stats, root explorer and LCD density monitor pro.
Set dpi to 160 to give me better screen real estate.. then reboot normally
I'm about 11.5 hours on battery and 83% battery with light to moderate use.. I disable mobile data stuff unless I need it, and generally keep wifi active most of the time..
Overall most things run very smoothly. Some apps don't seem to close properly when killed but I assume its due to those apps.
System does get laggy if a lot of apps are open and sleeping.. I use ATK pretty often to keep things smooth...
Problems I've run in to so far...
This one is pretty big I think... when using flashlight from notification panel, if I leave it on until it times out, my phone completely freezes and I have to long power press to reboot or remove battery to get system rebooted. This is persistent and replicated every time I tried.
Gmail app crashes about 30% of the time. Seems completely random. I'v disabled Gmail notification due to this.. (doesn't crash google accounts like above, just the gmail app)
When holding phone I can feel a very very faint vibration coming from the back side up near the camera.. it pulses about once every 2 seconds. You have to very lightly touch the phone to feel it.. like barely touching it. Not sure if its just mine but its very noticeable if you hold it right. Not sure what's causing this.. doesn't seem to affect anything and phone isn't overheating so I can't give more info...
Random reboots are something everyone is aware of so not commenting there. Nova does hang sometimes for 5-10 seconds. Probably due to this being a dev release and such things are expected.
I'll update more if/when I run in to other issues that people haven't really commented on...

android.acore process keep FC..really disturbing..
it bcoz of auto sync and i hope someone have a fix on this
I think v8.2 is the best among Westcripts ROMs. because of the least FC.
V.8.3
Flashed since yesterday , very stable , no FC's at all, however there is an USB problem , PC won't recognise the devised the way it was in previous versions. Nevertheless I believe it's a ICS bug as I found same behaviour in other Roms as well.
Not bad so far using 8.3
I noticed in his dev post he said that official ICS doesn't have blue coloured wifi/signal bars but I've used my friends nexus & his definitely has blue coloured wifi/signal bars when in use.
Everything else seems pretty smooth at the moment.
Looks like this problem with blue bars has been resolved in 8.4 Currently downloading (check change log).
Not being funny, but is there not a thread in the Development section to discuss this rom, surely creating another, just fragments the chefs build

Would have posted my thoughts there but I don't really want to spam 10 posts just to be able to :/
Downloading/Installing 8.4 now
SMe too.. I have flashed the new version and it seems fine. I haven't checked the GPS yet. What I want from this rom is
T9 dialer in aosp theme
Full screen call id like aosp
Aosp boot

Well actually, that thread is supposed to be for development discussion only; not for general Q&A 'how do I do this or that' like it has been. Which means, if people actually adhered to the rules, using this thread for all the 'HALP' posts would likely make development a lot easier for those working on this particular project. The less spam he has to sift through, the more actual development related posts he can focus on.
Not to mention, as I stated in the OP of this thread, I wasn't able to post my bugs there because of my post count.. So i posted them here, along with some other info (like how to install) about the release.
If only everyone who tried to play forum police actually knew what the dev forums are supposed to be for........

Do any of u have the issue with notifications having a 'grey background'? I've had this since 8.3.
Also how can I change back to the stock bootanimation?
Thanks.

I used a app called ROM toolbox suggested in the dev thread to change the bootanimation to the ICS one.
Notifications come up grey here on 8.4.

No issue with the notifications that I've seen so far on 8.4
To get the Samsung boot animation back, do the following:
if you have 8.3 or an earlier version, extract a copy then navigate to extracted file > system > media
copy bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg to your sd card
in root explorer, navigate to your sd card > hit menu and multi select. Select the above to files then click copy/move.
Navigate to /system/media > mount R/W > paste.
Remove bootanimation.zip
set back to R/O and reboot phone.

Temporary fix posted by kevjef420:
go to market and install these three apps. ex dialer, ex dialer ics theme and ics adw theme by kovdev.
set the ex dialer as your main dialer in dock. open setting for ex dialer and select ics theme. then long click on the ex dialer icon in your dock and click edit and select adw theme pack and then find the ics blue phone icon.
now you have a very functional t9 dialer that is very similar to the miui dialer and it works great. I am very happy with the results. this is a good fix untill somebody comes up with a t9 fix for asop dialer.
I've flashed 8.5 and set language to German but somehow it's a mix of German and English!?!
Anybody with same problem or similar?
Navigation from Google Maps keeps force closing everytime i have GPS signal. Maps works fine. What could it be?
Thanks in advance!
v. 8.6
Just installed 8.6, really fast and smooth. Hour in use, no more process stopped.
I am not sure why but in one app's browser and in stock Android file browser I get unusual wide slider. It was normal on 8.4, but changed on 8.5.

Hello everybody...XD
I've been trying the "new" port of Cyanogenmod 9 (ICS), from the following topic:
[DEV][WIP] Ice Cream Sandwich Port (AOSP/CM9)
And after some weeks of dayly usage of build 4 with Update 1 i've decided to make a review of it.
The original post has a list of working and not working features, so first of all i'm going to comment and complete the ROM issues:
Bluetooth: It's not possible even to turn it on, so if you really use the bluetooth, forget it.
Wifi AP: The native tool doesn't work at all. The ROM includes the app Wifi-Tether, through this app you are able to turn on the Wifi-AP, other devices can see and connect but that's all, you can't actually use the internet .
Calendar: In the raw ROM it's not possible to syncronize your google calendar account, it can be solved by installing the GAPPS: link GAPPS...Thanks Halco (it also fixes a google+ app issue)
Camera(Photo): You can took photos but you can see them only after they are saved, through the gallery app, i mean the camera app has no live preview of the photo, only a black screen.
Camera(Video): You can't record videos period.
Videos: You can't watch videos, even youtube videos, youtube crashes when it attempts to reproduce the video.
Games: Forget every application which demands high processing .
Issues I've faced during usage:
Sometimes the phone crashes when you remove the power cable;
You cannot natively sync your facebook contacts (I've used this appfacebook contact-Sync.=P);
Sometimes all of a sudden the phone freezes, and you need to reebot it ;
It can take a bit to open the App Draw if you join the Apps and Widget Tabs, if you face this slowness go to Settings->Laucher->App Draw and uncheck Join with Apps;
The Data Usage (a native tool that keeps a track of your data usage) doesn't work;
Those were all the problems i had with this ROM, but all the other amazing Ice Cream Sandwich features are fully operative, so if you just like me don't use those missing tools go ahead it is a legendary SO with dozen of little features that make all the difference, all with an smooth interface...XD
Well this review is my attempt of a useful way to say thank you to the Developers...
Nice review, and yes you can post market links, just not links to warez websites.
Cheers

i've just installed...soon I post my experience
actually you should use latest openFIMG update with arakmars G3mod kernel. it improves overall performance and data usage feature works with the new kernel.
general assumption: when doing a review you might want to say some positive stuff about the ROM as you only said which features don't work. overall performance is good on ICS though trebuchet launcher consumes a lot of CPU power (but it's version 0.1, so there will be improvements anyway). there's no word on battery life, too, which is quite good for ICS.
[edit:] oops I was to slow
Good review, but to many problems,i will instal it in the future,ICS is amazing,
I like to add some more bugs

I like to add some more bugs,
- During the call when you press any key to interact with IVR the phone call goes to mute.
- Phone became very slow when you using is continuously.
A lot of faults but not much said about the features that are working so just thought I would go a bit further....
Widgets in appdraw
You can now view all widgets in the app draw without having to add them to the home screen, this is a staple feature of ICS and has been ported beautifully, it gives you a grid size in the draw too so you can see sizes.
Folders on homescreens
You can pile apps ontop of eachother to create folders so you can have all your messaging apps (whatsapp, fbmessenger, smmsmms) in one place. just click on it and it will open the folder to make your choice. it makes finding things quickly very simple, especially if you have alot of apps.
Apex Launcher
Apex launcher is a replacement launcher for trebuchet and helps run the new OS butter smooth. it also a little more customisable and user friendly and runs the best on this port. if you want fast and smooth, download it and push it to system/app for all functions
notification bar
the notification pull down bar on the port is alot more customisable than anything on GB or earlier OS's. add a weather option to it for a really sexy look.
Once installing the new gapps, they work absolutely fine, still a few syncing issues but all in all a decent attempt, the calendar especially is cleaner and more user friendly than previous builds.
extended power menu is working brilliantly, can go straight into download or recovery mode which i believe is now touch screen if i remember correctly... (please correct if wrong) and connecting to wifi is fast and reliable. There are many more things that really do show a huge amount of promise in this build, it is clear that given a little time and help with resources, these dev's are going to pull off what i personally didnt think possible. ICS ON G3!! D
Did some testing
I tested a view tastes of CM9. Was quite happy with the latest builds, however discovered a small issue that makes it a bit difficult to operate. I will describe it, hope this helps the developers.
First: Wifi, data is all working quite well, calender worked as I needed.
After flashing the rom CM9 systems work fine for about a day, after that when the phone goes into sleep you can wake it up, however the digitizer does not show any sign of life.
The screen however is fully functional, buttons operate.
After some random button pressing the digitizer migt start working, sometimes a reboot is the only solution.
However after a reboot sometimes it operates for half an hour and shows up problems with the digitizer again. I had this on both the G3 phones I owe (use one for testing).
Why it operates the first day after flashing without a problem is a little weird.
For the moment I'm back on Dutchmod 5.3
I lost the market (play store) after installing the G-apps given in the first post.
Looks like the G-apps from the above link is de-Odex.
Can any one give me a link to the odex G-apps?

I don't think gapps has odex and deodex apps
It is the ROM which is odexed and deodexed.
It works for icsforg3 build 4 so you can install it on any odex ROM

Updates (4/26/12)
So there is an updated Cyanogen Mod 7.2 for the Eris released. See this post for more details
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605308 Thanks to XDA member "bigrat" for pointing it out.
I tweaked this new version and removed all the extra stuff again. See the list below from the previous version. I got a few of the features I wanted added to this version.
Changes:
3d Gallery is out 2d Gallery is in.
Hosts file updated should block most adds.
DNS settings changed. Still uses a public provider (Comodo Secure DNS) The Google ones are still in there for backup so you should resolve no matter what.
Removed the XtrSense boot animation. Replaced it with a Black screen. I think it boots faster now.
LCD Density is back to 160. 150 breaks the Market sometimes and it's hardly noticeable.
Here are some source links (Thanks Doogald!)
Cyanogen RC link http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=RC&device=desirec
from xtrSENSE, the GScript source is http://code.google.com/p/gscript-and...ource/checkout
Conap's kernel, kernel source link is https://github.com/Conap30/htc_kernel_desirec_cfs
Cyanogen Mod source is http://github.com/CyanogenMod

Misc
Also I decided to make an archive for all the Eris stuff I have collected. If you want me to host your stuff send me a PM and I'll put it up. If I have your stuff and you want it removed PM me and I'll gladly take it down.
Have a look here
http://www.360pc.com/eris/
Future Features:
I would like to add .zip files that can be downloaded and flashed to the eris that contain the packages I have removed. I had a request for the calender and calculator. I need to see how legal it would be to just include these as an extra flashable .zip
Also I recommend the FullThrottle Data fix flash this before Google apps

http://www.360pc.com/eris/Add On's/CM7_Full_Throttle.zip
And Most of all thanks for the feedback, encouragement, and assistance! I really appreciate it.
*older Info*
Ok Eris users. I am new to making android rom's and don't claim to be an expert. This is my first attempt at cooking a rom and I like it so I thought I would share it. This is a learning experience for me.
So it's based off of the Cyanogen Mod 7.1 found here in the Eris forums
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297719
Thanks to Cyanogen It's mostly his stuff I just cleaned it out a bit.
I also merged some stuff from XtrSense 5.01
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726467
Thanks zach.xtr
I designed it to be functional not "pretty" It's also light I tried to take out all the extra stuff I could.
So here is what I have done.
Start off with the Cyanogen base and then remove the following
Androidian theme
Cyanobread theme
Cyanogen Wallpaper pack
Rom Manager
Email app (get Gmail off the market)
quick search box
browser (Go get a real browser non webkit off the market)
music (Get something else off the market)
Theme Manager
Calender (I never use it even though I should)
DeskClock
Magic Smoke Wallpaper
Calculator (Find something better on the market)
protips
sound recorder
dsp manager
Cyanogen updater notifications
Theme Chooser
Cyanogen Stats
Live Wallpaper picker
tts service
spare parts
application provider
Pico Tts
Html Viewer
Cyanogen Screenshot tool
That's 15mb of removed stuff.
Then I pulled the following from the xtrSense rom
The gscript tool
and the Boot animation (it's 600k vs the 1.6mb for the cyanogen animation)
Also changed the LCD Density from 160 to 150 to zoom out a bit on the display. More screen area (like increasing the resolution)
Things I am working on. Future additions
I am trying to remove the 3d gallery as it is so slow on the Eris I will be replacing it with the 2d gallery when I can get it and the camera both working right.
Updating the Hosts file to block all those annoying adds. I have this ready but forgot to include it in this build. It'll make it into the next. Some people may prefer this build without it.
Someday I will include BotBrew and ship SSH support and Rsync
Modify the DNS settings. Right now The OS is using google's public DNS to resolve stuff. I'll add in an East coast USA DNS to make it a bit faster. Possibly a few other custom locations too.
Replace the Cyanogen and XtrSense artwork with smaller more bland/boring original artwork.
More as I see fit.
I am not responsible for what you do with your phone. I have tested this on my ERIS but I make no warranty claims. You do this at your own risk.
To install
Download the rom here
www.360pc.com/bob3.zip
Make a Backup. Then make a backup of your backup and store it offsite.
Wipe your data/cache.
Wipe your Davlic cache
Install the new rom.
Reboot.
once you get to the home screen I recommend loading up the android market app. It will give you some messages about "Google Play" Agree and then reboot again. Your Market app will be replaced with a "play" app and you should be able to install stuff.
Notes
This Rom does not overclock your CPU! it leaves it at the defaults. If you want to overclock it's in the Cyanogen Mod Settings menu.
I did not change the cyanogen mod wallpaper not did I change the extsense boot animation I apologize in advance if any of the developers feel that I have ripped them off. I will be changing these when I can.
With the Browser and the 3d gallery removed the Eris Runs super fast. More on this later.
I'm Open to suggestions or comments, I can take Criticism. I may even honor requests given that I like them.
Thanks for the Long read, and Thanks for all the work done by the Devs keeping the Eris alive for this long. You guys Rock!
-EvilBob-
Good work man. It's surprising to see some new development for the eris.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
Ditto, it's nice to see any kind of development still active.
Great to see it, but a ROM has to have the calendar to make it on to my phone. I think I'd also rather have the calculator on there - I hardly use it anyway, so I don't want to waste precious /data space for a market calculator for the few times I need one. I can't quibble with anything else otherwise.
Oh, though I think you should put up a notice at some point pointing at your source links, including for the GScript tool...
Wow, Thanks for the Replies everyone. Glad to see some people still look here.
The calender and calculator aren't too big it would only add an extra 388 KB to the total size. I will consider putting these back in.
As for the Source Links I'll have to look into this and do some homework. I really just copied .apk's them out of the other two rom's I mentioned. I will gladly give credit when I find out where it comes from. Or Remove the app if I need to.
Aside from that I did find a few bugs. My Screen Density change makes most apps on the market incompatible I will switch it back to 160 from 150 for the next release.
There is a way to make the market compatible even with a changed density. I don't have the link ready but there is someone over in android general that has hacked the market to work with changed density.
