Are you sure you want to do this right now?
Reason being, the current ICS is a leak, and will require you to do certain things that you are not familiar with right now, nor have ever done. It is not a final Acer release, and there is no support, or source code from Acer. And there are "issues" as there are with all leaks. Bad battery power, occasional Sleep of Death (not often), and problems with Superuser.
Installing leaks are not for people who haven't even rooted their device before.
And, there will be several "leaked" beta versions before an official ICS build is released.
What I would do, is first read how to root your device first. You can use this method (no, I did not make it, so you will have to post on his dev thread for support)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
Note that this installs a rooted a500 rom, so you will not have 3g. So afterwords, you will have to flash your leak. Also, you will not have true superuser access until you do other things.
You should really read a lot of the threads, with the 501 ICS leaks, and also some of the 500 ICS Leak threads, and FULLY understand what can happen.
You should really wait till the devs can get a solid 501 ICS rom, before you go messing with things you don't understand. So after you do some reading, let us know, and we'll be glad to assist you.
As you can read, numerous people have bricked their tabs with ICS leaks, including myself, (but I know how to bring it back).
thanks
Thanks for the very informative response, I will certainly take your advise and wait for something more stable in the coming weeks
After a lot of reading I finally took the plunge
Currently running ICS 4.0.3, with ICS v3 boot loader (see attached screen shots)
Yes I'm dealing with the occasional loss of 3g, but otherwise no real problems
Today I thought I would test my boot into recovery mode.... however when booting into recovery using either Acer Recovery or CWM I get the message ... recovery verified failed... in small red letters
Normal rebooting to ICS no problem...
Please let me know how to install correct recovery
Many thanks

Hey guys. Hope that someone can help me out here, I'm stuck trying to load a new ROM on a friends Iconia A500.
I searched the internet for a simple rooting tool. Came across Blackthunder, used it to root the Iconia. Rooted without any problems. Afterwards I download the Acer Recovery tool from the market. Flashed with CWM.
Problem is that when I reboot into recovery it keeps on saying "booting recovery kernel image", nothing happens. On my own Transformer I just boot into CWM and flash with whatever I'd like.
Can someone please guide me to a step by step tutorial, or explain what I did wrong here?
Cheers!

Well, the big question...Which version of android do you currently run?
Which version of CWM did you try to flash?
Second question, which bootloader are you currently on? To find out, just run the acer recovery app and it will tell you when it starts.
And finally, which rom are you trying to install.
Then we can give you a more precise answer.

Thanks. I managed to make a few steps in the right direction.
New problem though. I managed to get CWM working correctly. It feels a bit buggy, with some backbuttons not responding. Downloaded Lightspeed 4.7., seems like the fastest rom out for the Iconia.
Factory reset + /system format. Installed the zip, everything looks ok.
When I boot up the tablet the first few seconds the screen looks fubar'd. Like a really nasty system crash, with white lines running all over the screen. Afterwards you get a standard boot animation & ICS loads up. If you put the tablet on standby though it goes into deep sleep after about 10 minutes.
I downloaded Taboonay just to be sure it's something in the rom. Taboonay works, but feels significately slower.

Glad you made some steps.
You still didn't answer my questions about bootloader.
The reason you got the screwy screen on boot, is because that rom you tried to install, used a "hacked" kernel so that ICS could run on an HC bootloader. It's perfectly normal. The deep sleep you refer to, is called SOD, (sleep of death) and usually you have to reboot.
This is why I asked which bootloader you were currently running. Because it makes a big difference since the release of ICS. Acer changed the playing rules.
Once again I ask you, to run AcerRecovery, and just get the version bootloader you are currently running. Upgrading to the ICS Unlocked bootloader makes things a whole lot smoother.
MD
Hmmm, thought it had something to do with that.
Installed Acer Recovery Installer. Am on bootloader version 0.03.11-ICS
Recovery version CWM rev1.7 (v5.5.0.x). Asus Transformer has it's fair share of SOD's, but those are random. With the Lightspeed rom I tried it was like clockwork.
Should i upgrade the bootloader to a newer version? Do you have any idea what's causing the SOD's?

If you plan on running ICS correctly now, and in the future, it is highly advisable to upgrade your bootloader to an ICS Unlocked version.
Civato posted a guide for doing just that (dev forums). It has all the info you need.
The reason SOD happens, is that in order to get a good root, and have an unlocked bootloader, certain things have to be done (hacks). With them. Remember, ICS kernel and bootloader communicate with each other. The hack to the kernel, resulted in the screwy display on boot. Also, SOD's can happen also (power management issue with wake loks). But at the time, in the beginning, it was a good method for getting ICS to run on a HC bootloader.
The unlocked ICS bootloader is the way to go. Every Dev's rom (made for ICS BL) has the kernel modified so that you not only get full root with no issues, you rarely get SOD anymore. Also some other enhancements have been added such as GPS tweaks for example.
If you get SOD, as I said, it happens so rarely now days that most can't remember that maybe they shut their tab off!
Most of the dev's (myself included) have quit support for HC BL based ICS roms. No reason for it.
Also remember, Acer is just starting to push ICS to the tabs a little. So builds will change on a regular basis. And the early builds will not be 100% stable. 95% probably. The rom you install today, may have a new version in a week. Who knows.

or nightly versions ,sometimes its hard to keep up , I think ICS not only changed the rules but the "skys the limit" now and Devs see stuff and change it quickly!

Have you tried to restore HC boot loader on an ICS rom. Don't worry just download one of the update package from the following link. As you mentioned you were on ICS rom then try ICS update only as it will update boot loader back to ics. Decrypt the file using Acer decrypter on the same link. Place the update.zip on your externel SD and then boot in recovery. Let other recovery install the update file.

Only Acer logo
Hi all,
i have the problem that the A500 does nothing else but show the Acer logo.
The only thing i can do is use TWRP.
What did i try:
I tried flashing some roms using TWRP, also some older ones but no luck.
I tried using an empty SD-card and then start with Volume - and Power but no luck
What can i do...i am stuck...
Anyone? Still have a non-working Iconia 500...boohoo
Is it an option to flash it with Clockworkmod / CWM, reboot, flash it with an Acer ROM ?

Well, telling us you've "tried some other ROMs" and have had "no luck" is pretty much telling us nothing at all.
What ROMs -exactly-?
What -exactly- do you do in TWRP?
What version of TWRP?
-Exactly- what error messages do you get?
What bootloader do you have? Sounds to me like you might have the HC bootloader when trying to install a stock ICS ROM. This is not going to work, period.
If you want help, you've got to provide enough info to help you.
Hi FloatingFatMan,
thanx for your answer.
I tried TWRP v2.1.0 with following roms:
Acer_A500_4.010.42_7.006.01_COM_GEN1
Acer_A500_7.014.14_041.203.01_COM_GEN1
cm-9-20120708-UNOFFICIAL-a500
recovery-ra-iconia-3.17-
gnm
Today i updated TWRP to v2.2.0 using openrecovery-twrp-2.2.0-picasso-signed and tried the cm-10-20120730-UNOFFICIAL-a500.zip rom. Same problem, after system reboot i only see the acer icon (permanent).
Also tried cm-9-20120708-UNOFFICIAL-a500.zip but same problem.
What can i do?
There are three main ingredients when customizing a device:
1) BOOTLOADER
2) RECOVERY
3) ROM/KERNEL
You provided answers to #2 and #3....what about #1??? What BOOTLOADER are you on?
Thanks for your reply.
I never changed my bootloader so that will be stock i think.
Finally i managed to get it going again. The trikck was to use a 3.0 stock rom. That worked.
From there i now use ICS (stock) which is fine at first. I had not seen anything but the Acer logo the past 2 weeks, so the Acer ICS will do perfectly now.
But for later on: can i use CM9 or CM10 with default bootloader + TWRP 2.2.0?

You'll need the unlocked ICS bootloader. Civato made a great guide over in the DEV section.

OK to explain for you.
ICS and JB require the ICS bootloader to run. They will not run on the HC bootloader unless specifically modified to do so. Also, no HC ROM will run on the ICS bootloader. This is why none of those ROMs were working for you.
Flashing stock ICS has updated your bootloader with the locked ICS one, so you probably won't be able to downgrade to any HC ROMs, or use any custom ROMs anymore. You can, however, use APX mode to install the unlocked ICS bootloader which will enable custom ROMs again.
I don't recommend trying to install ANY custom ROMs now until you'd flashed the unlocked bootloader. Instructions for this are in the Development section. Read VERY carefully before proceeding and if in doubt, don't proceed.
Hi FloatingFatMan,
thanks for the explanation.
I think i will stick to the stock rom at first. The APX way is not without risk...but maybe in the near future...

I am having the same "stuck on acer logo" issue. I am totally novice when talking about how to flash to ROM and stuff. Can you please direct to me a simple "dummy guide" on how to flash back to factory rom and fix my tablet. I tried the hard reset by holding down volume up and pwr button and on/off button, where i see the 'erasing..." but it still goes back to logo screen.
Please help me with my situation. Thanks in advance.
Have a look at this video
That is an example on how to do it.
Hi, apologies at first if this was posted before. I tried searching a lot.
Acer Iconia A500.
I have been using FLEXREAPER custom rom for the last 6 months. installed any updated rom i can find.
Few days ago I found FLEXREAPER released FLEXREAPER-RELIX_rev5 ANDROID 4.0.3, downloaded the rom on my 2GB SD card, wiped everything, tried installing.
Installation showed successfully finished. reboot.
Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
Wiped everything off. installed again. reboot.
Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
Downloaded a few other ROM, such as, RE-FLEXxx ANDROID 4.0.4 ROM, Evil-Alex-Unleashed, JELLYTIME_AOSP_BUILD_5.
Installed. Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
tried finding the ROM that I was using last. could not remember the name, so I found an older ROM, FLEXSTRIKER-FINAL-BASE-2-R8-3GusbIntegrated.
installed. Perfectly booting. no issue whats so ever. That means I did not brick the device.
updated CWM to CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro rev1.7), the touch screen one.
went the whole process of trying to install with all the new roms I have downloaded. Same exact issue.
Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
tired installed the OLD (FLEXSTRIKER-FINAL-BASE-2-R8-3GusbIntegrated.) rom, works FINE.
tried Fix Permissions from CWM advanced menu. tried the whole process again. same issue.
I am loosing my mind. any HELP?
btw, please be patient with me as I do not understand the Android terminology that good.
I always followed tutorial instructions as it is.
just half an hour ago, I tried to install RE-FLEXxx ANDROID 4.0.4 ROM from a different SD card( thinking maybe the sd card has something to do it) , Same issue.
#1. You must be on the unlocked ICS boot loader. Instrustions in the dev section.
#2. Upgrade your recovery to version 1.7.3.
Do those two things and you should be good to go.

guide for unlocking ICS boot loder
[GUIDE]A500/501/G100W-Installing ICS V8 UNL-BL & CWM Or back to HC BL(24-6-2012)
Should i follow this guide? or is there a less scary guide? would you kindly point out if there is any?
I am assuming you have been running honeycomb based ROM, you can't upgrade android versions without upgrading boot loader.
Yes follow that guide, that's what pretty much everyone has done to upgrade the boot loader, you have to have ICS unlocked boot loader to run almost all ICS ROMs, and jellybean ROMs, unless they provide an alternative kernel for honeycomb boot loader.. which developers have stopped supporting, so if you want to be able to keep up to date, and install the latest ROMs, you need to upgrade boot loader, the directions seems overwhelming at first, but trust me its very easy takes like 5min.

You have a good guide to go by. And trust me, if you have any issues, I am confident we can help you.
The issue, is the Bootloader. To run any ICS based rom, including my own (Evil Alex), you have to have an ICS Bootloader. That's just how it is.
The bootloader is included with every "stock" rom. Call it the security measure and OS launcher. With HC based roms, everything was more or less in order., When ICS came, Acer changed the rules. As they usually do.
A new bootloader was introduced, and it communicated more with the Android Kernel. So, after some hacked kernels, which was ok, it was decided the bootloader needed to be hacked, And so, the unlocked ICS bootloader came about, But, this meant some rules.
1. ICS roms run on ICS bootloader (unless they have a hacked kernel, which is really not so good)
2. Honeycomb based roms will not run on an ICS Unlocked Bootloader. So don't even think about it.
So, you have to upgrade your bootloader to the unlocked V8. Don't worry. These days, the 500/501 are pretty much "bulletproof", so you don't have to worry about bricking your tab.
Just remember. Your UID number before you do anything. So write it down somewhere. After your ICS upgrade, get your UID and write it again. Call it your golden key to life.

I guess it worked.
I installed the Evil-Alex-Unleashed.
I guess that's it. right?
I can list any number of things that I've done/tried, but there have been so many! I'm not a noob when it comes to flashing ROMs, but I'm a new to the Acer Iconia Tab A500 and that's the problem, I think.
Anyway, I got the A500 with Honeycomb and I let it do the ICS OTA. No problem. Then I rooted it. No problem. I got to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31546261#post31546261
Then I decided to change the bootloader and that's when I borked something up. It would still boot into ICS just fine, but I couldn't get into recovery. I decided to try downgrading to Honeycomb 3.0.1 using the "unstable" update.zip, but that just ruined everything as now I'm completely stuck. I can't boot at all, it just hangs at the black screen with white Acer letters and red "boot verification failed" in the top left corner. Recovery gets me the dead Android image with the black exclamation point in a red triangle.
I have looked all over and I've read dozens of XDA threads...and I'm sure I'm missing the one thing I need to do to fix this, but heck if I know what it is. I have the Acer drivers installed on my computer, I have a variety of tools (nvflash, blackthund3r's apxflash, etc) waiting to be used if necessary.
So, please, I implore you...treat me like I'm dumb and walk me step-by-step through whatever it is I need to do to get my A500 back up and running! Thanks for your help!
UPDATE: Many hours later, I fixed it! I did another update using the full, stock image of Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2 (just guessing about whether it would work or not) and it seems to have done it. Sure, I'm back on Honeycomb 3.2, but it worked. And then I was able to use AfterOTA to root and get the CWM bootloader on there.
So my next question: what do I need to do in order to get ICS? Can I just flash an ICS ROM from CWM, or do I need to update the bootloader in some way?
Thanks!

Yes and No.
Now that you are on HC 3.2, you're going to need to do the process again.
IE: Unlocked Bootloader and CWM
The problem you had at first, is that when you flashed the UNL bootloader and CWM, you missed 1 tiny step. (lot of people forget to do this) And that is to delete the boot-recovery.p file from the /System. If you do not, you can install CWM, however, when you boot into stock ICS, your CWM gets overwritten. Another little trick from Acer
In the Dev Section, in the stickies part, Civato posted a link to a full ICS Stock Root Rom, With all the nasty stuff removed. (bootloader, recovery files). Download it, put it on your Ext Sd card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31572588&postcount=6
Then do the unlocked bootloader + Cwm again. Only THIS TIME, when it finishes, boot the tab immediately to CWM (vol- and PWR). And install the modified stock rom, or one of the custom roms.
Don;t forget to get your HC UID number written down before starting the process. Also it's good after ICS to get your ICS UID number also written down.

hi xda-ders
this is my first post , and i've been re-directed here to ask questions about my acer a501. so i've had my a501 for 20 months, before it suddenly developed the well documented issue of mainboard memory failure which cannot be fixed by software. i returned my a501 to acer nz to be repaired under warranty, and they replaced the mainboard. unfortunately this mainboard was also faulty with no wireless, so i had to return it again for another round of repairs.
i finally got my a501 back on friday, and realised that the mainboard replacement was on android 3.2. previously i had upgraded to android 4.0.3 using the acer iconia tab update app, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
1. when i do a settings - about tablet - system update check, i get the message "network coverage is currently poor. please move to a location with better coverage to continue." googling this i find that acer no longer does OTA updates and have shut down their servers so i can't do it this way.
2. i called acer nz for support on upgrading to 4.0.3. they directed me to the acer nz support website where apparently i can download the update.zip and install it manually. following the instructions exactly, i can't get this to work and keep ending up with the android robot with a yellow ! icon.
can somebody help me with the steps needing to update android 3.2 to 4.0.3 manually? i've tried searching the web and xda but many of the threads are quite old from 2 years ago when ics was first released. thank you
my tablet info:
model number = A501
android version = 3.2
baseband version = Cust:R3C01 Config:R3S/3 Conf:R3C01 Protocol:R3B01 App:R3C01
kernel version = 2.6.36.3+
build number = Acer_A501_4.031.24_COM_GEN1
Did you try to update with a 2gb micro sd? The standard recovery doesn't recognize "big" micro sd., from what I saw.
One thing: I'm not 100% sure you can update your tablet without updating recovery too. Just in case, retrieve the cpuid of your tablet, it could be helpful if it goes in boot-loop!!
Same request but different scenario
So I have Acer A500 currently running Honeycomb version installed by tool "tdv4_rollback_rom". This tool helps you to get on with valid cwm recovery and rooted honeycomb rom. I assume this brings me to HC bootloader, which is not compatible with any ICS ROM. So if I understand correctly, I will have to upgrade to unlocked V8+ ICS Bootloader and from that point on flash ICS ROM (Lightspeed or Tabooney...). If my understanding is right, I am following correct guides to get unlocked ICS Bootloader on tab using AUTOMATED A500APXFlash tool. Everything goes fine and I do get PASS screen at end. After reboot, I boot in Skrilax V8 bootloader and then boot into recovery to flash ICS ROM. After flashing any ICS ROM, I am expecting my tablet to boot into corresponding ROM but after booting into primary kernel message, I am stuck at boot logo (acer, green droid based on ICS ROM I picked). No matter what I do, I can't pass this splash screen.
So far, I have tried bunch of things,
- tdv4_rollback_rom tool
- Afterota (to flash custom recovery and bootloader)
- APXManager to get unlocked ICS Bootloader V9 on tablet (Automatic and Manual as well). This has ran successfully (PASS message) multiple times, while there were times where it got stuck in second stage of uploading.
- At end, I have tried BabSector, "a501 A.bat" ran successfully, Booted in recovery formatted System (twice), While running "a501 B.bat" (in APX Mode) as following step, I got error message "bootloader status: Bct Write Failed (code: 22) message: nverror:0x42008 (0x6042008) flags: 0"
Anytime, when I am stuck in APX mode (while doing any of the above mentioned steps), I run back to tdv4_roolback_rom tool to get proper recovery and HC rom running on tablet.
So is it partially bricked or I am following some wrong steps?
Any suggestions to fix this issue? Or I should keep HC running on tablet? I am open to run pure ICS stock as well with stock recovery and bootloader, but darn thing won't pass the boot logo.
Thanks

Did you try to update with a 2gb micro sd? The standard recovery doesn't recognize "big" micro sd., from what I saw.
One thing: I'm not 100% sure you can update your tablet without updating recovery too. Just in case, retrieve the cpuid of your tablet, it could be helpful if it goes in boot-loop!!

actually i tried updating with a 1gb microsd but it didn't work. i have 2gb and 16gb cards at hand, but neither of them works so i don't think it's the microsd that is the problem.
how do i update recovery? i'm happy to use other types of recovery if i can get to 4.0.3 but so far all my reading hasn't showed any full factory acer rom that i can flash. :crying:

In the old times (a couple of years ago) I managed to update my Acer A500 from 3.2 to 4.0.3 (the leaked one from Acer) without installing another recovery, but maybe for the A501 the things are a little different.

in the old times on my previous tablet, i updated my a501 using the OTA check update app from within the tablet. i assume that is directly from acer, however it seems the servers have been shutdown and therefore i can't use that method anymore. hence why i'm asking if anyone here on xda has the full 4.0.3 that i can use to overwrite 3.2 version.

I know, I know, no more OTA from Acer. Have you taken a look here? There's a leaked ICS rom there...

cool thanks for that link. i have downloaded the ICS rom and opened up the zip file, it doesn't look like a normal update.zip? what does leaked rom mean, not original from acer?
i'm worried that i might brick my tablet since i'm new at this flashing thing.

"Leaked" means that it comes from Acer, but it's not official (maybe it was a beta, maybe not, I don't know). From what I read, you only have to follow this flow chart in order to install it. Remember to save your data before flashing, and if you're not sure, don't flash!!
