[Q] KFU 0.9.5 not rooting

Is anyone else who picked up one of the new refurb Kindles from Thursday's sale having trouble getting KFU 0.9.5 to actually root and install GApps?
In the last couple steps, it seems it can't complete something. I get the following error:

2183 KB/s (22364 bytes in 0.010s)
mv: can't rename '/system/bin/check_rooted': No such file or directory
<idme> write 4000 to offset 0x1000
Then when you run Install Google Apps / Go Launcher EX, it installs Go Launcher fine, calendar fine, but runs into trouble installing sync and a few other things.

I don't believe it has to do with anything specific we're doing. I think something changed in 6.3 that is throwing KFU for a loop. I'm not a developer... just a tech nerd... but I think it has something to do with whatever root exploit is in use not being able to assume SU (super user) permissions to copy/change the needed files.

Did you try installing CM7 or CM8 after you installed FFF and CWM? I've been tempted to try but after I couldn't get the Google Market/Google Play to work I paused to see if I could figure out why it was failing.
I was able to get Google Calendar installed by unzipping the APK file that it downloaded, copying it files over using USB, and manually installing it.

Mine is brand new as of a couple days ago.

Same problem, KFU didn't give me SU, also Google Play. Any helps...

I got the kindle from Thursday. Kfu did not work for me. I had to use jcases root method for 6.3, burrito or something. Make sure to follow it exactly. I spent hours trying to get kfu working and even softbricked for a bit.
I used the tools folder from kfu for all of the commands needed. Took 5 min, then did it again to my friends kindle who also got his on Thursdays sale.
I will be on tomorrow for anyone who needs help.

I have not tried to install anything but gapps, Google Calendar did install but i think that sync if not working correctly, and ofcourse market is not working because im not rooted. I have faith that this will be fixed real soon.

Did this work for anyone? I have a Fire from the Thurs sale and this isn't working. I upgraded to 9.3 w/o thinking. I first tried KFU 0.9.5 and then jcases' method. When I type this:
adb shell mv /system/bin/check_rooted /system/bin/check_rooted.bak
It says the path doesn't exist.
If I run KFU after jcases' method to install GAPPS it says permission denied like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572846&page=2

can you walkthru how you just used the tools folder, i open my tools folder and there's .exe. files etc and not sure where to go from there.
run.bat just crashes for me

I guess I just flashed my ROM for the first time.
Root explorer now asks me to access as SU, so it seems to be working.

I just got a refurb one too and adb can't see it, even though it is listed in device manager as adb composite interface. Kindle Water can see it on my Mac, but that can't root this software version yet. Quite frustrating!

have you tried rooting with 0.9.4. I was running 6.3 on a new kindle and it rooted and installed twrp just fine.

Ya its not adding SU app but I didnt need it since I went straight to CM7. Root, FireFireFire and TWRP all went without a hitch.

I had to install the drivers the long way for ADB to work. I got these links off Google and they worked with 2 PCs.

[Solved] Google Play Store not working

I rooted my Kindle Fire and the only thing that isn't working is the Google Play Store. I used Kindle Fire Utility to root my device. When I open up Google Play, it says:
The application Google Play Store (process.com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I've tried installing the apk various ways but it's the same result every time.
Any helped appreciated.

Did you move it to /system/app and chmod 755 before installing?

I had this problem for awhile myself and it took me hours to find a solution. What I did was after I rooted my kindle and flashed it over to cm9 reloaded I noticed gapps was not working. So to fix this I rebooted Into twrp and reflashed the gapps zip rebooted once more and my problem was solved. Hope this helps

Flashing insecure stock rom 6.3 did the trick.

It was working. I could navigate through the market and look for apps but when I went to install Spotify, it went back to that error message. After that, I try opening the market and it shows the error message.

I'll be honest; I'm a little lost on what everyone said above. All I've been doing is downloading the apk's from the Internet and throwing them on my downloads folder. I open ES File Explorer and download the apk's. Is there anything simple I can try?

I'm using stock with go launcher. I just tried a suggestion from a site to make sure I'm rooted. I installed terminal manager and typed su. I got the reply permission denied. I'm thinking that means I'm not rooted?

Did you flash the gapps.zip or are you just nstalling the apk..... I'd look at that thread b63 gave you again you have to install 3 apps the other 2 sync your gmail account with market that's why it's FCing.... Just set up the es file manager set as rw and drag and drop the 3 apks into the system folder and reboot the kindle

I move the files to system/apps with Root Explorer and change the permissions but after I install it, it says "Application Not Installed."

Don't hit install download those 3 apks in the thread b63 gave you a few posts a go and simply drag them into the system folder then reboot

i assume you mean the sdcard partition
yupp - it's safe - you can keep a backup on your computer if you like

Google Play Store on Fire HD 2013

after tinkering around for some days I came to the conclusion, that the playstore crashes because of the Download Manager.
I tried to sideload the download manager from my phone but that didn't work since the Kindle's missing some framework. (newer android on phone)
Could someone with a working gplay store upload the apk and odex for DownloadProvider and DownloadProviderUI?

You want to remember that most people just flash a Gapps zip these days. For those just staying rooted, I recommend using this more up to date tool that can also install Google play. It works real well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460

Sounds like an OTA update from amazon broke your root. Try to just re-root again. that should fix the problem.

Well, you can always use KFFA and that tool will install Google Play real well. It is an older version but it will update right away too. Other than that, i don't know what else to offer. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069329 You can do factory reset or or use the Root Many Android tool that will re-install Google Play. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460

Install GPlay Store as mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365224
Then follow this solution:
Backup your Downloads App via Titanium Backup
Download the files attached to my post to your device
Copy the DownloadProvider.apk AND DownloadProviderUi.apk into your /system/app directory
Set the permissions to rw- r-- r-- for both
Reboot your Kindle Fire HD

Hmm, I just tried this. I selected an app to download from the Play Store and hit install, but it;s just been sitting at 'Downloading..' for the past 10 minutes.
It hasn't crashed yet, so we're getting somewhere!

I've just uploaded DownloadProviderUI.apk in my original post. Try these maybe this will work. Otherwise you could also try to patch your Google Play to a different version with Lucky Patcher (just google for it ) ('Toolbox' -> 'Install modded Google Play Store' -> select another version)

Also, now whenever I restart the tablet, I get a "com.google.process.gapps has stopped" message twice. I'm not sure what's causing that. It's probably from following the 5 different tutorials I've found. lol

Yeah, same result as if you'd delete DownloadManager and DownloadManagerUI .odex and .apk.
Are those two .apks from a working version of the play store?

I renamed the original DownloadProvider and DownloadProviderUi apks, adding '.bak' to the end, then moved the apks from this thread in there and changed the permissions. Just gets stuck at "Downloading...". I also tried a few different Play Store versions. Everything else syncs up fine (gmail, chrome, hangouts, youtube, ...), so I suppose it's good enough for now.
What I'm really hoping for is a custom recovery and CM11 nightlies.

wow this so didn't work for me and I am so screwed right now, don't even bother to ask how i did it but the only way i will get the kindle functioning is to push the apks through via adb however i am very novice and i cant get /system to rw or /system/app to rw can anyone help me

From inside ES File Explorer go to tools > move down to root explorer and click on that (don't click on the word on.) Now click on "mount r/w > set permissions for both to rw and click OK.
Now choose device in you ES Explorer and go to data then app (or where ever your apk is downloaded.) Long press and select copy. Then click the device option again and go to system > app > paste.

I used Kindlefree, just google for a free search than that should set up google play store but it will not open on the kindle kfsowi amazon 7'' version, simply replaceing everything with what you said to do worked first try your the man!

[HDX 8.9] Root, google apps and wallpaper fix

Hi,
I wrote a little script with some nice utilities to customize the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9.
Options available :
Superuser
Remove signature check
Install Google Apps
Fix wallpaper
It runs under Linux, and you need to have java, jar, sed, wget, adb and aapt set up on your computer.
To use it, plug your device and enable adb.
Extract the archive and run hdx.sh in a terminal.
Everything is not perfect, but it seems to work pretty good for me

I have the same question... can we run this script under windows somehow. I already have root, gmail and music working... play store can't connect though... I also used adb to do the wallpaper fix and it says it is applied but nothing seems to have happened. Still no wallpapers anyway. btw, I also have superuser and busybox installed too.

Judging by the content of the .sh file, i believe a .bat file can be written to run on windows... however, it would be prudent to do it in a safestrap rom slot, you know, just in case something goes wrong...

It should be possible to use it on Windows, though you have to find the equivalent for all programs used inside (especially for sed ...)

I have tried this and after applying the Google Apps 3rd option it rebooted and now its stuck with the kindle fire logo and not coming up anymore
The device answers to adb commands (lists up with adb devices) and reboots with "adb reboot fastboot" and/or "adb reboot recovery"
Although resetting with the recovery to factory defaults doesnt help...
Anyone know whats happening? (I cant afford to send it back to US as I live in Colombia)

Any ideas why services.odex is not what its looking for? (Maybe someone could upload it?)

Guys, if ANY PART OF THIS FAILS & YOUR DEVICE REBOOTS, IT WILL BRICK THE HDX.
Several people are having issues (maybe running this in a terminal on device or via mnty) that leads to the endless bootloop. This can also occur if there are files left in Dalvik cache from the old download manager & UI.
Use caution & common sense when trying to modify your device. My brother works for Amazon & has told me that they are supposed to start cracking down on device returns this week. If you mess your device up because you don't really know what you are doing (much of this is early developmental stage) there is an increasing chance that you will be stuck with a non-functioning device &/or out several hundred dollars.

Now you can mod the build.prop & start anew if so desired. What I did. Once you've used the exploit, SU is almost garunteed to stay, at least until Amz patches it in an update.

Hi,
I tried to install the Google Apps with the scripts, and now every time I boot up it shows "Kindle is upgrading ...."
After a while it still boot up successfully. But it is taking longer time.
Also, the Google Play store only works for me once after I first reboot. Afterward, it app closes itself right after I click on it.
Reboot does not help.
Did I do anything wrong here? Any idea how I can fix it?

The Kindle update is a known bug, it doesn't disturb me a lot but maybe I'll try to find a solution
For the Google Play store not working, did you disabled the signature check ?

hi, 2months ago I root the device with cm-10.2.1-maguro all working as expected, till I liked to use voice recorder after recording stopped the app close, realize that has to do with root.
I couldnt find how to enable the app through superuser, so start to check for alternatives so I landed here

no hope also with that, uninstalled. The problem :
through adb + eclipse I can browse the device folders when using adb root - OK
on device superuser still @ settings - OK
when on android terminal - and run the command su writes su not found!
then I red @ superSU GplayURL
Superuser access management runs through a so called "su binary". There can be only one of these at a time.

Have you tried installing a rooted ROM?

nada, just download the cm desktop + cm android and made the root, nothing else.. please, advise how I can fix it..

I used to have this issue (but I didn't realise I had lost root because of an app), so I just downloaded and reflashed SU and all was good.
Download and flash from recovery: http://download.chainfire.eu/282/SuperSU/

hmm tried I got :
- Mounting

- Settings Permissions

When an app requests SU, you should be prompted. If you've set a default choice, you should be able to change that from the SU app. You should also be able to change previous choices from there as well.

basically the problem is :
1-voice recorder recording but no output
2-on built-in browser in any page has 'browse' to choose a file - the open dialog never opens! (aka facebook.com upload photo or imgur.com)
