NC mostly boots into recovery, only sometimes boots into rom - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thank you ahead of time for reading,
I have finally gotten my NC to run CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC1-encore-KANG without any bugs, but I have one problem. Everything works fine and dandy, but when I reboot or power on my NC, it will go straight to recovery. In recovery, I press the first option to reboot, and it usually reboots into recovery again a few times. After anywhere from 1-7 times, it will boot normally into the rom.
Before this, I tried many different methods of rooting, and all of them left me with a buggy rom that would freeze a lot. This time, I simply wrote 8 GB CWR onto my 8 GB class 4 sd card using windiskimager and then installed the zip file for the rom in CWR. I feel like I skipped some steps, but the rom itself works flawlessly, the only problem I have is the minor one where I have to boot several times to get to the rom. How can I make it so that my NC boots directly into the rom, rather than recovery?
Thank you so much for your help and if you need any more details, let me know.

Since the NC looks at the SD card first, it will always boot from any boot files on it. If you don't want to mess with the SD card, simply remove it during boot (assuming that your CM is on the nook itself (aka EMMC)), and it will boot into CM 7. Then push the card in after the loading screen starts, and it will find the card without problems.
So, I guess we would need to know where you installed the rom, and what steps did you skip in the install process.

I am not really sure where I installed the rom. These are the steps that I took:
1. Wrote 8 gb CWR onto my blank 8 gb sd card.
2. Put the card into my nook, booting it into recovery.
3. Connected the nook to my computer and put the CM7 zip file on the sd card.
4. Unmounted the nook and then "installed zip from sd card"
5. Installed the rom and the rom started up after the reboot.
Now I have the problem described above. I don't really want to reinstall the rom in any way because everything works great, but it is a minor inconvenience whenever I need to reboot.
Thanks for your help.

You need to remove the SD card. You wrote CWR to it and it will always boot to recovery if that card is inserted. Once in recovery it is actually take a shortcut boot to boot the ROM which is why it seems like it works. As soon as you try and reboot or boot from power off though it is going to the SD card first.
Just remove the SD card and you should be fine.

Thanks for your reply,
Your method works, but is there any way I can leave the sd card in during boot? This is just for convenience because I have a lot of files on the sd card and my NC is in a case so I don't like removing the sd card. If not, then it is all good.
Thank you!

You should just be able to delete the boot files from the card and be fine.
MLO
u-boot.bin
uImage
uRamdisk
I think alternatively, you can use one of the bootloaders to set it to boot from the nook rather than the SD card (or from alternate images or recovery images for that matter).

You don't actually have to remove the card. You can just pop it out for a sec (still seated but not engaged) and then push it back in. You don't have to physically remove it. You might also want to check to see if the things are being installed to your portable SD card versus the internal memory. Sometimes it says SD, but the files are on the internal card not your external.
(Oh, and be sure to leave thanks with the thanks meter if it helped).

Once you have used the bootable SD card you don't need it anymore (except possibly for recovery) and you can always create it again in the future.
Ideally you will add recovery to internal memory through ROM Manager or flashing it from a zip before formatting your bootable SD card back to normal. Then copy any data files you have off of the card and onto the pc. Format the bootable SD card back to normal to recover all of the space. After formatting add your files back onto the card and then put it back in your Nook and use as a normal SD card. No more worries about rebooting into recovery.

[Q] SD Card Help!

Hey guys. I'm currently running this ROM, I've been using it for a few days and have had no problems but today, when I turned the phone off and turned it back on, it took ages to turn back on. Then when it did it all looked them same but was kept freezing etc., then up in the notification bar it said "SD Card Removed Unexpectedly" then my phone went crazy with FC's.
So I took out the battery and restarted the phone. Then, it would turn on and go to the lock screen but then it would reboot and be at a continuius* boot loop of the HTC 'Quietly Brilliant' screen.
So then I took out the battery again, this time I took out the SD card too and booted up and my phone was normal again. Obviously with no phone storage though as there was SD card in. Then after I just skipped the setup I put my SD card back in to my phone and went to the music player and all my saved songs on my SD card played. But no internal storage (I have the SD card partitioned with a 1GB Ext3 partition). Then with the SD card in knowing it still works I rebooted again, only to come back to the HTC screen again.
So basically, how can I fix this?
If I'm going to need to format my SD card is there a way I can backup what's in the Ext3 partition?
Thanks,
L.
Bump. Need to be able to use my phone properly again urgently. Thanks.

It sounds like something is really funky (faulty hardware?) with either your SD card or your phone. You could try reformatting it with that Panasonic tool...
You can backup your SD-EXT partition with CWM/CWR. You can boot CWM from MAGLDR without flashing anything. Just put zImage and initrd.gz from the CWM download on the root of your SD card and boot "AD SD" from MAGLDR.

Thanks for the reply. It's not the phone as I have a 2GB SD card in it right now but that's not big enough.
Yeah I have a problem with CWM, when I click AD SD it says some Kernel error thing.
Is there any other way to find the files in my Ext partition using my computer?

Unfortunately not that I am aware of. Where are the CWM files located on your SD card? Are they on the root or in a subfolder? Did you modify the path MAGLDR looks for the "AD SD" path? Are you using the latest CWM release?
Yep they're on the root of it. I think it's 1.12 I have ATM. How do I modify the path? :S
Nevermind. I tried re-installing and it worked on my 2GB SD. But the thing is, the files I want are on my 16GB that won't read lol. I'll try flash it on that now.
Tried to flash my 16GB. Says SD Kernel Open Failed in red letters? Works with my other SD card though? :S
Now I just tried with my 2GB and it's saying the same thing again.

[Q] NC boots into stock BN software instead of CM7

I am trying to get CM7 to boot on my NC with an sd card, using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
I get as far as this part
"shutdown your nook and take the SD card out, insert it into your computer.
Copy the gapps-... file to the SD card on the first partition (titled boot) without changing the file name".
When I take the card out of my NC and put it back in my laptop to install market and gapps, it says it needs to be formatted before I can use it. The files that were on it before (the installer image and the nightly build) seem to have been deleted from the card by my nook. Any suggestions?
Remove then reinsert a few more times, if still persists, try to use a usb-sd adapter.
Just to confirm, when you inserted the card with the nightly build into the NC and powered on, you did see messages saying it was installing CM7, correct?
Were you then able to boot into CM7 and set up Wi-Fi before removing the card to copy over gapps?
If the above are not the case, it's very likely your laptop never properly wrote the image to the card in the first place. Even if you did everything right, many people report difficulty with the all-in-1 card readers on their laptops, and need a separate USB reader.
Some things you may not have done right:
Did you unzip the compressed .gz archive of the disk image?
Did you write the resulting .img file to the SD card using a program such as WinImage?
I'm assuming you're using a Windows machine. If not, let us know what OS you're using and what steps you took to write the image, and what results you got when inserting the card in the NC.
Thank you for your replies, but I figured it out. My laptop wasn't recognizing my sd card after I took it out of my nook, but when I put the card in my droid, it saw that the files were there. I added the apps file using my phone and when I went to install them on the nook it worked. Took me five hours to figure this all out but I finally got it. Thanks again.

[Q] SD Card and Back Up Question

hello everyone, i backed up my files using the CWM recovery, this may seem like a simple question (im a noob) but where do the backed up files go? i do not see them on my sd card or on the nook (built in memory) can i delete the backed up files? or get to them? Also a member here told me to buy 2 sd cards is a good idea, one with all the info and the other empty for apps and music so i can keep the sd card in the nook without it going to CWM everytime i boot, but if i buy a new sd card do i need to format it? or just use it out of the box and into the nook, will my apps still work since the new sd card is empty and my files?

Always format new cards. And never use Windows format. Use this. A freebie. Windows format can corrupt uSD.
Your nandroid (CWM) backup will be in the Backup folder in the ClockworkMod folder. It should be on your uSD.
One uSD is enough as long as it's large enough to hold all you want to use. I've always used at least a 16Gb card. Always name brand (SanDisk). You really don't want to swap back and forth. As long as your nandroind is on removable memory you should be safe. Some people copy their nandroind backups to their desktop computers for safe-keeping. A bit OCD but not really a bad idea.
Ok very good info! But I use the nook color and I do not think I need to format the sd card?
HTC Wildfire S (VM) "s-off" "rooted" Stock Rom
If you use the uSD as flashable CwMR, then you wouldn't want to reformat the card, otherwise, you have to recreate it once again if you want to do a backup or install.
what i mean is my new sd card do i put it in my nook and format it thru cyannogen mod setting? says umount and format sd card, cause if i put the same CWM on the new sd card everytime i boot it will take me to cwm

Others have formatted their uSD cards in their NC's but as a general rule I don't. I know I sound like a one-trick pony but one needs to start with a good formatted card otherwise everything else is for naught.
The reason I ask is because I don't want to keep pulling out my SD card everytime I turn my nook on, so if I were to format the new SD card how would I do it?

Either you confuse about CwM uSD or I (we) do not fully understand your issue.
1. If your uSD is a flashable CwM Recovery then it WILL BOOT into CwM Recover EVERY TIME you boot up with that uSD card plugged in. That's the way it is
2. If your uSD is for normal usage, you should NOT have any problem leaving the uSD card in the NC when booting up.
sorry i should have better explained, ok i get it now, my question in simple form is do i have to format the new sd or just simply pop it in the nook and go

[Q] Access to bootable sd card from stock OS after 1.4.1 update

I have a nook color with dual boot from sd card. The sd card having an android 3.0 version.
After I got the 1.4.1 update, I noticed that I was able to access the sd card( the boot partition alone) from the stock OS boot of nook.
But now, dont know how, I dont see that anymore.
Was this a flawed update that was fixed or am I missing something.
Do help please.
I could really use the advantage of using the bootable sd card as a regular storage card when using the stock OS of nook. I prefer reading on the stock OS of nook.
Not sure why you're not seeing the SD card anymore, does it still boot?
SD card installs create multiple partitions on the SD card and the Nook will only be able to access the first one (boot). It should be accessible with any version of the Nook default OS.
You should have a media partition with a decent amount of room (1-5gb depending on NC version). That would give you more room than the 100-or-so mb on the boot partition.
Just found out that you can point the emmc install to see the "sdcard" partition of the sd card using the following info:

Yes, I can boot from it. Every time I plug in the SD card, the notification already says that it is safe to remove the SD card. In the device Info part of the setting, the "Unmount SD card" is already greyed, though it does say that the SD card is found.
It is however useful for me to know that the boot partition should always be accessible.
I did remove the SD card a couple of times without unmounting it first, could this possibly have corrupted the card?

Try to boot the uSD card (the one with Android 3.0 on it) and see what happens.
If it can, then it's good, if not, you can say it's corrupted.
Yes, I can boot from it. So I assume the card is OK
I plugged in other uSD cards and they get recognized fine. So I assume the Nook stock OS device recognition is OK.
I should probably recreate the boot partition as a last ditch effort
I had the same problem at first, but now I have mounted the correct sdcard partition that I wanted to mount.
I couldn't get it to work with editing the vold.fstab file at first. Then at some point after I manually mounted the correct partition through adb shell and edited the vold.fstab it now works.

Can't Mount SD Card in CWM 5.x!

So i went to flash a ROM and now it says while flashing that the flash was aborted because the system can't mount the SD card. I'm using the newest CWM and have flashed stuff before. Not sure what to do, it wont let me make backups, restore, or flash anything.
I find it kinda strange, because once I reboot my tablet, everything's working fine, but it's not letting me install a custom rom
And yes, I have...
1. Unlocked by booloader.
2. Rooted my phone along with installing superuser.
3. Installed CWM recovery through fastboot (or whatever it's called, lol)
Has anyone gone through the same thing?
Bump....
Cm on guys I really need to get this rolling ...
What class SD Card are you using? I have issues with CWM on this Tablet reading anything above a class 6. I have a Class 10 SD Card that I have to swap Out and put in a different slower class card to flash roms and what not so I personally have had to deal with this because of the speed. Anyway hope that helps you out.
I'll try another sd card and see if it work out. Thanks for the advice!!
Bump. Using a different SD card didn't work, unfortunately

Back up all ur SD card files to PC
In CWM, you will find a Advance/ partition Sd card
Use this and make a 128 mb one, Reboot to CWM and CWM will recognize your card.

Please help me i have a similar problem. I tried to partition it and it worked but it wouldnt recognize my sd card. Idk what happened maybe i formatted by mistake and now i dont have a system (or atleast it wouldnt boot up) and i have a cwm that doesnt mount recovery so i cant flash.
please someone help me! i need my phone
FIXED!
Nevermind. I did it wrong. U were supposed to partition sd card make it 128-128 and then while still in advanced setting restart launcher. Then you have to go to mount the card manually through mounts and storage.
if you just shut down the device it wouldnt work.
thank you for helping me fix this demonntl
