I'm trying to find and load an alternate Keyboard app for 6.3(rooted)
I'm presently running the Gr8 ROM -
I had TouchPal working fine for a week or so, then this morning... I unplugged my KF(from overnite charging), hit the pwr button expecting it to wake from sleep, and nothing happened. Pressed it again, long press expecting it to power up, still nothing. I held for 30secs. then pressed again and it finally started to boot, FFF then into "Kindle Fire" screen, then to my desktop launcher - Go Launcher.
It then started giving me FC errors -(force close) every few seconds, I reccongnized this during my installation of the TouchPal App, a few days prior. I had to go in with Root Explorer, and delete the .apk file then reboot to fix the problem. But now I'm without my alternate keyboard app! I tried re-installing as before, but nothing worked!
This is really bizarre. I had tried a few different APPs and finally got TouchPal to work, and I got used to it, and really liked it. Now I'm stuck with KF's 6.3 default which I really hate! Tocuh Pal was working GREAT for 4-5 days! then started crashing for what seems no reason.
Has anyone had any luck getting any other keyboard app to work reliably?
I prefer running a STOCK or close to STOCK ROM - gr8 is nice. Seems to run everything I need it to run. (except an alternate Keyboard APP)
Same thing here with the ICS keyboard from the market. It will work fine for a few hours and then it starts force closing. It seems to happen after a reboot for me most times as I've tried it more then once. Hope someone figures it out for us, I'm lost on what is causing it...
GoKeyboard
I'm using GoKeyboard at the moment (in white) and used to have SmartKeyboard Pro. Both of them run flawless.

are you running Gr8 ROM? and did you have to copy the .apk in the /system/app folder after installing? as the method for other the keyboard apps?
update:
Just tried it ... same thing! FC right after I rebooted... did you do anything special to get it installed?

Thanks I did just that. Got it installed and I like it! - I was also able to get AI Type Keyboard installed.
I went from not being able to get one to getting 2 alternative keyboards!
I really like AI too. It's got large buttons, and optional keyboard choices. It will be a $ if I want to go beyond the 15day trial... we'll see.
Thanks again.

I reboot my phone multiple times a day to swap batteries....
Every time I reboot the phone, I have to change inputs to get swype working again. I've tried unistalling swype and the installer, downloaded it again from my swype beta account and same things happens.
I'm running damage control also, anyone else have this problem or a fix?
I didn't even know you could get swype on the Evo. lol Time to use that search button......

Thank you, sir. I'm at work and my searches kept getting interrupted. I am now looking for reasons to text so I can Swype, and I've only had it for 20 minutes....lol. I like it............I like it A LOT.
I have been rebooting a lot lately and have swype selected as keyboard. I'm running cm6 and never had to do input to put back on...

i had this issue in 2.1 as well. though not nearly as often. its kind of a pain if you reboot a lot etc like i do flashing roms kernels themes etc etc etc) i have just learned to put it into my process now lol. factory reset wipe flash boot fix swype
switch to your other keyboard then switch back to swype, does the trick for my everytime
Not sure if anyone has said this but I know that with dc 3.5, there is an issue with swype after reboot. You can fix it by switching keyboard back to stock and then back to swype.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
yea i think most of us know that but the problem is if you reboot a lot it gets pretty annoying to keep haing to do this
well ig uess for those that didnt know a "work around" this helps.
I installed the Swype keyboard and it was working fine for a few days, but now it will not "swype". It responds to pressing individual keys but dragging my finger across the keyboard no longer has any effect.
Has anyone else had this problem?

this happens, if you have it to apps2sd it can cause this and other issues, as well could be due to language package if install, as said try to unselect swype and re-select it, as well if you get the apk swype restore you can restore your original swype from your nandroid

This is a known problem with Swype, and happens every time you reboot the phone. Try un-checking Swype in Settings>Language and keyboard, then re-checking it. You will also need to re-select Swype as the input method by long press in (almost) any text input field, until the Input Method option comes up.

Might be only on the latest version of Swype, I don't remember it happening on older Swype builds (but not certain). On the latest Swype open beta version, it does this on several ROMs for me (stock, Virtuous, CM7), and another on XDA mentioned its a 'known issue'.
it is a known issue, it actually depends what swype you get when getting it from the installer there is 2 options full and eng/spanish, i had issues when i got full on my g2 and mytouch slide, when i did eng/spanish all was ok except it Fc one or twice fix permission fixed and working since then

I've had this problem several times. Try pressing any text field until the "input method" message pops up. Select "touch input", and the repeat the procedure now selecting "Swype". It always works for me.

Hope it helps.

So I've got a Nook running CM7....I signed up for the Swype beta and installed Swype on the nook but it says that it is running on a device it isn't meant to run on and that some functionality won't work...
I give it a try and everything works if you type normally, but if you swype, there are ZERO words in the dictionary so it errors everything you write because it doesn't know any words...
Ideas? SlideIT sucks.

Theres a whole thread already devoted to this. I'd link but I'm not at my computer. Just do a search, there's a link to an .apk that will work with the nook.
You could try the Amazon app stores free app for today, flext9 keyboard. In my opinion its better than slideIt and has some added functions that swype doesn't.

This.
Swype failed last night for me but lo and behold, Amazon comes through for the Freemium.
I do not own a Kindle Fire yet I understand that Kindle Fire technically runs 2.3. Since sideloading is good to go, has anybody tried running an alternate home screen launcher? I know it won't look at good as a tablet running honeycomb, but at least it will have more tablet look. My wife is on the fence about getting either an Acer A100 or this Kindle Fire. Oh and she is not computer literate and thinks that root is the part of the tree that resides under the ground. Thanks everybody!
I was able to load Go launcher on mine - it looks nice.
My wife is also technically challenged - that said, it's technically her device, she preferred the native launcher - I do too.
Why? For her the ease of 'click to launch' all in one place rather than scrolling through screens.
Fwiw, my kids were able to turn on the device and navigate - the out-of-the-box carousel launcher is quite intuitive.
I found it (native launcher) launched the apps faster, actually - although ymmv - hence my preference for the native launcher.
Interesting, thank you for your time and input regarding this matter. I probably will download the app that will help my wife switch between go launcher and the native launcher app for the kindle. I'm running go Launcher on my SGS II so she should have zero issues customizing it to her likings.
Thanks again for your assistance!
You bet! Glad to help.

I tried Go Launcher, but didn't like it that much. Having used ADW on my Droid for a long time I decided to try it out, and I have to say I much prefer it.
I even have Beautiful Widgets running on it too.
However, a couple of problems I've seen.
1. I can't create folders?
2. There is no GeoLocate (even for WiFi), so I can't get the weather working. Anyone get this working or have any tips?
Passing on a little tip for those that haven't rooted and don't have the Android Market running. Beautiful Widgets requires the Market for themes/skins etc. What I've found is that if I download to my phone, and then copy the contents of /data/beautifulwidgets/scskins, skins and wskins to my Kindle, I am able to select the widgets.
ADW EX works great.
Launcher pro keeps FC.
The only two I have tried.
I just bought the Fire today and it is seriously a tiny tablet without a camera. Pretty cool.
I'm using adw.ex without issue. Only complaint is that you have to.switch back to the kindle interface to browse your books and magazines and custom desktop backgrounds revert to kindle backgrounds after screen unlock.

deleted. sorry
VTLauncher also nothing but FC unfortunately.

Am I the only one who seems to love the Amazon backgrounds, and even more so that they change? I for one will try and keep them if we ever get a custom ROM.
With ADW Launcher, and an almost opaque Beautiful Widget Super Clock widget, mine looks fantastic!

In the Beautiful Weather setting, there is a section for location settings. In this section, you can toggle geolocation and manually search for a location. I got it working fine on my Fire with Launcher Pro.

Zeam Launcher doesn't work for me.
Force Closes.
Tried several different versions.
Anyone get it working?
Wish I could remember which app I was playing with but I don't. The important part that I want to share was that it showed that the Fire internal settings showed that there is a GPS and it's on. Since there really isn't one perhaps that's why apps are having troubles. They query the OS and it's says there is an active GPS yet the data returned from the get GPS location call is worthless so the app gets confused. Whichever app it was that showed the setting also had the ability to turn GPS off. Can't help but wonder if that'd make a difference.

I'm getting force closes with ADW EX. I can't seem to remove it either. Could someone post the trick to remove this application?
EDIT: I got ADW removed, maybe I was using an old version or something.
EDIT 2: I got a later version of ADW to work. The only issue so far is getting the "Kindle" application to execute.
Thanks
YMark, same here - I have ADW running fine, yet the book reader app is not working. Maybe fix permissions and reboot?

If LP is crashing for you, convert it to a system app in titanium backup and reboot. Don't select LP as your default launcher until you are sure it won't crash it you'll end up in a loop and have to adb to remove LP. Ask me how i know

It works if you have a titanium backup to restore, but its not working at the moment via the download/swype installer option. I think they are aware of the problem and working on it (from the Swype forums)
Missing it but the stock android one is doing an OK job in the meantime...
I installed swype beta just fine.
I get to the screen where it lets me choose a version to download but never loads the choices.
Try flex T9 instead. Installed no problem.
For the people who were able to install swype, is swype keeping your custom words? I'm noticing that I'm unable to add custom words to the personal dictionary. I'm not sure if it's a bug with the latest swype or it's just incompatible with the nexus 4.

Well it worked... but it's version 1.0.3.5809. Isn't that a pretty old version? Don't see some of the Swype connect options that are available in the latest beta.
It's one version old and still works with theme chooser. The new version has its own theme chooser thingy.
If someone with the newest version would go in to data/apps and find the com.nuance.swype.input-1.apk and upload it that would be great too.

@eniris - Thanks a lot!
I'm always wary of files people I don't know post, so scanned it with both ESET on my laptop and Lookout on my Nexus 4 to be sure. It's clean, and it works perfectly - it's version 1.3.1.9274.
Swype is perfect as a keyboard, but the new Android keyboard's speech recognition is better (it's real-time vs waiting for the Swype one to process, and it's nice that you can pause and easily record more). Now I only wish there was a quicker way to swap between the Swype keyboard and Google Voice Typing. When you're in an input field, you have to pull down the top menu, tap "Choose input method", and then tap "Google voice typing." It's way more cumbersome that just hitting the little icon, but doable. Maybe I'll just get used to the Swype one.
Anyway - thanks again eniris!
