Battery kept at 100%/4.2V when reached fully charged? - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Hello,
Hopefully this is normal for the SGN but since it is/wasn't healthy for the li-ion cells to be kept at 100%/4.2V for prolonged time and other phones (not just phones) used to disable charging after fully charged status and wait for the cell to reach approximately 4.1V before applying some more charge.
Has anyone else noticed this?
It's easy to monitor when the phone says it's reached 100% fully charged via any type voltage/sensor application. Mine stays at that level until charger has been unplugged. The SGS 1 and 2 beeped when reached 100% to inform you ;-) not sure if they stopped charging after that though. My previous Motorolas stopped charging for sure.

Is it fine to keep the Nexus One plugged even when it's already fully charged?

I often hear that when batteries are fully charged, devices should be unplugged. I practice unplugging laptops when fully charged or removing their batteries. I think, this is also true for most, if not all, mobile devices.
As for the Nexus One, should it also be unplugged from AC or any sort of dock when it's fully charged? Do docks automatically stop charging batteries when they are full? How about AC plugs?
I think it's not the over-charging that might affect the phone but heat from the battery. Having said that I left mine charging through the night only last night and the phone was actually cold this morning (phone was turned off while charging).
any recharging circuit that doesn't have a drain/charge loop when charge is full should be considered defective.. my n1, g1, bb all do this. leave it plugged in to the dock all day everyday when i'm at my desk, and don't charge overnight. rarely dip below 75% battery
Lithium Ion Batteries have the technology to understand when they are fully charged and still plugged in. When the phone is fully charged and plugged in the battery stops the charge cycle. People seem to think that the batteries have the same issues they had when they first released but they do not. I leave my battery on charge all night [anywhere from 6-9 hours] and it does not even get warm. I have always done this with my cell phones and I have never had a battery dramatically lose life.

That explains what you need. It mentions that you can take it off when it's fully charged but also mentions several times that the battery stops charging once it reaches it's maximum charge.

X10 only charges to 98%?

My xperia x10 only charges up to 98% anyone know why its like that?

Double check that you are removing it right as it finishes charging. There are a few posts already detailing what that the x10 will stop charging once it reaches 100%, and will not resume until the battery drains below 90%.

Reason I ask is because once the phone is fully charged it will stop charging and start to drain down to c.90% when it will kick in again..
Alternatively.. if you have a genuine problem, it could be that your battery needs re-calibrating... drain it completely till the phone switches off.. then fully charge it with no use.. redrain it, then recharge it again..
i know its not going to 100% because I was watching it and using juice plotter. Also I think this might be the calibration problem. Another weird thing, is that I have to "force" it to go up to 98 but it usually just stays at the highest as 94 or 95. Also how many times do I have to discharge it.
2 or three should do it.. see how it goes.. are you using the SE charger by the way?? it 's a bit sensitive to non OEM chargers..

Honestly with the new batteries, you should not fully discharge them. Li-ion batteries lose their capacity if you discharge them. I have learnt this lesson the hard way with 2 laptop batteries. I always keep my x10 above 10% and it is still at 100% health.
Sometimes, when you are monitoring the battery with 3rd party applications,
the indications are a bit off.
For example, I am using Battery Status widget and I've set it to update every five minutes, so that it won't drain the battery instead of just indicating it.
So, when the phone is charging, sometimes the light goes off (meaning 100% charged) but the widget shows 97% or 98%. And 5 minutes later it shows fully charged.
So, it could be a fault to the software you're using and not the phone or the battery's at all.
When the green LED goes off, go to Settings>About>Status and check what the percentage under battery level is. If it is 100%, you're just fine.
macdaddy... These aren't li-ion
. They're li-polymer.. They don't need conditioning. But they do sometimes need re-calibrating.

Galaxy Tab Battery Charging Mystery

I am sure most of you have realized the fact that when you unplug the Tab from the charger, even it showed fully charged, the battery drop right down to 99% or 98%, which is not that normal with other android phone.
I took a deeper look here. I have a widget which can monitor the battery voltage. When the Tab is connected to the plug and fully charged, the voltage is showing at around 4150mv, which is the normal fully charged voltage for most of the android phones. The moment you unplugged the charger, the voltage drop to around 4070mv. I guess most of the phone judge the battery level by voltage. The differences of the voltage makes the battery level drop to 99% or 98%.
Another fact I found is that the voltage changes quite a lot when the Tab is on different loads. A simple example is that when I wake my Tab up from a sleep mode (black screen to desktop), I can see that the battery voltage widget showing a 100mv drop. (This can be easily reproduced, just put a battery widget which can show voltage on desktop, lock your screen for a few minutes, after that unlock your Tab and keep looking at your voltage for a few seconds, you will notice the difference).
I basic Physics tell me that this kind of voltage drop is cause by the running current and the internal impedance of the battery. But still I am not so sure about the 100mv drop is normal or not? It is bigger that is should be (causing by the not well made battery which have larger than normal internal impedance)?

Theres another mystery to be resolved. How come a two amp/hour charger needs four hours to charge a four amp battery instead of the aprox two hours it should take?

The charging current is not constant. The maximum is 2 amp. But this is probably available when the batter level is very low. As the batter level goes up, the charge current goes down. Meanwhile, the charger would provide power for the device to operate if you were charging it with power on, which uses some of the amps.
The explanation does not satisfy me. It would certainly explain why it charges in a little bit more Time than expected with the 2 amp charger, the problem is that the charging time is about four hours, that's double the time needed for charging.
For example the Archos 70 internet tablet has a 3000 miliamp battery and a 2 amp charger. Time to full recharge? 90 minutes.

Charging current is usually lowered for example when battery overheats while charging. Also, if you use the device while charging, then of course you are slowing down the charging as well.

Hmm, the Archos is not telling the whole truth. It'll try to explain what I know. Lithium based batteries have a two stage (some people say three!!) charging process.
The first phase is the constant current phase, this pumps in as much current as possible (within the constraints of the charger, battery size, battery temperature etc). So with a 2 amp charger the full 2 amps will hit the battery, probably less if the device is switched on as the device will take some of the power from the charger.
The first phase continues until the battery voltage is about 4.1 or 4.2 volts then phase 2 starts. At this point the battery is probably about 70-80% charged. The 2nd phase is a constant voltage charge and will take the charge from 70-80% up to 100%.
The 2nd phase is what takes the time, as the voltage hitting the battery is now fixed at 4.1/4.2 volts the charging current steadily reduces as the battery becomes more charged. Therefore it may take 20 minutes to get from 80% to 90% charged but 40 minutes to get from 90% to 100%.

So why do some devices take longer to charge then others? Apart from different chargers & size of the battery the other main factor is the charging circuit in the device. Some devices do not do the slower phase 2 charge resulting in a battery that is only 70-80% charged, the device will of course tell you it is 100% charged but it is not, so for example out of the 3000mA/H battery in the Archos only ~2500mA/H will actually be availble. Other devices may push the charge voltage on the phase 2 charge to make it quicker - this is seroiusly bad for the battery though.

Right but when you charge it with all apps closed and the screen off the power consumition is minimal so it shouldn't affect the charging time very much.

Wonderful explanation mate.
But still I just can't understand why it took one hour and 50 minutes to go from 10% to 60% . In theory it should be phase 1 charging at full 2 amps hour.
Since the 50% charged is about 2 amps , shouldn't it have charged that amount in an hour?

I've been wondering this too. I read in other reviews that it takes 3 hours for a full charge but It took me 3.5 hrs to go from 55% to 100%. sounds like samsung is very conservative with it's stages.
The first problem is something that those of us with Droid Incredible devices have had for a long time. Many people resort to bump charging (i.e., charging to 100%, unplugging for a little while, then plugging it in to let it finish charging). It's an annoying problem.
Need help here my xda fellows.
I am not sure if this is normal, but my tab drops from 70% to 58% overnight with flight mode on and no apps opened. (i use lanucher pro if that counts)
Another weird thing is when i turn off the tab and charge, that battery meter only shows about half full and no matter how long i charge it for it stays the same. But then when i fire it up, android system tells me its 98%. And when i try to turn it off and charge it, now the meter shows almost full and will eventually shows that 100% symbol.
It seems to me some ppl get excellent battery life but not in my case. Could there be any problem with the battery? (running jk1 fw non root).

Another issue is that once the charger hits 100%, it shuts off. While the tab is plugged in and on, it will drain the battery down some...maybe to 95%...before the charger turns back on. However the whole time it is plugged in it will show 100% after having reached max charge.this is by design on almost all new battery devices to prevent damage to the battery and simultaneously prevent people from complaining their battery is draining even though it is plugged in.
This also explains why some people see such a quick drop after unplugging. If they happen to unplug at the bottom of a trickle charge cycle.
Again, not a bug.

As I have noticed these issues with my Tab as well, these were all very well explained and knowledgable replies.
Just to put in my two cents, I have noticed that the Tab actually seems to charge noticably faster if I leave it on, rather than turning it off. I do, however, usually turn off everything on the power widget and put it into airplane mode as well, mind you. But, the speed in which it recharges while turned on as opposed to the recharge speeds when completely shut off are fairly noticeable.
Anyone else notice this with their Tab or any other device, and/or have some insight regarding why this occurs? Kudos for the previous informative explanations, btw.

It is sometime that I am thinking on whether it recommended to fully charge the phone (100%) on every charge and make sure the phone is below 5% before starting the charging process or it is not something necessary to let the phone fully drain and then full charge it every time to increase the battery lifetime.

im mr king bump charger.. been bump charging my android phones/devices 6 days a week(all day) since october 19th 2008. never an issue.

N7 Powers off when battery reaches 20%

So I thought this was a fluke the first time then I was just able to reproduce the issue again. Once the battery level reaches 20%, the tablet will either shut itself down using the built in shutdown command or will just simply power off as if it doesn't have any power left at all.
I've charged it thoroughly and have even drained the battery down to 1% in the past but this keeps happening now. Any ideas?

this hasn't happend on my nexus yet but something similar happened to my LG Nitro HD. I basically rooted it and tried some battery calibrating apps on the Play store. In custom recoveries there's also this option to wipe batter status which i think might fix it but i've never tried it.
The battery gauge can be quite inaccurate. From what I have seen, I think Asus cut some corners in calibrating it for the specific battery chemistry - which makes things even worse.

It's not as if, there is no power left. The battery gauge simply had a wrong estimate of the remaining charge and suddenly the battery voltage collapses (happens very quickly towards the end of the discharge curve) and the N7 shuts down.
Messing with the battery stats doesn't do anything useful.
If you do a full charge / discharge cycle that may help a little with battery gauge accuracy. The battery gauge does some recalibration when doing that.
After a forced shutdown, fully charge and make sure the tablet sits around fully charged for at least 1h (e.g. just plugging it in over night will do fine). Then do a full discharge cycle with the N7 not plugged in at any time (normal usage will do just fine).
Those battery calibration apps don't anything useful, beyond getting you to run a full charge / discharge cycle.
Never happened on my Nexus 7, which have been taken down to 14% more than 10 times in the last 2 month. If what are suggested above don't work then use this tool to restore stock then Warranty return it or return it to store if you still have time,
Wonder if this is what happened to me last night. Was watching a video and it just shut off like the battery was dead. I wasn't paying attention to the battery but was almost positive it wasn't anywhere near zero yet. Never had the low battery pop up on me either. Hopefully it was a fluke...
there are many battery calibration issues/posts in old N7 forums. it also happened to me once in first couple weeks. what helped, I think, was shutting down the device completely with a little bit of battery left and just keep it unplugged for a few hours. Some say to preventively repeat this exercise every now and then..

I had tried completely discharging it and then leaving it to charge overnight a handful of times without any luck. I ended up just restoring it to factory state and getting a replacement via Google Play Warranty Support. The new unit works just fine. It's an 07/2013 build unit just like the first one if anyone was interested.
by any chance do you use a qi wireless charger?
I have encountered a weird bug where if I charge my nexus 7 with a qi charger to 100% and leave it on the charger itll screw up the percentage/battery stats. with my situation, itll lock my battery % to 100% and wont go down until i go into twrp. If i just go into twrp and not recalibrate the battery stats, the percentage would be off and my nexus wont show the right %, so my nexus would shut off at random % instead of the normal 1% or 0.

I can confirm this!
Did help on many devices for me with battery calibration erros...
Last one was a Galaxy S2 last weekend - turned of immediately, showed 0% upon start.
Took battery out for 4 hours, put it back in then and voila... 92% and everythings fine again.

No, I do not have a QI charger. I was always using a USB wall charger.
