i just got a Airave from sprint and they suggest that i put it between the modem and the router..but thats not possible for me since i share a connection with a neighbor..all i have to work with is a ethernet cable coming from a LAN port in the back of the router..so my question is..how can i set this up with out having to mess with any settings on the router since i dont have access to it since my neighbor is never home and i dont wanna screw up anything from the network that i lose internet..i need it!!
can i use the ethernet cable from the LAN port on the router and put in in the LAN on the back of the Airave?..or do i have to go to the WAN...the only other device i have to hook up is my laptop, which i will just hard wire
so simply i want MODEM>ROUTER>AIRAVE>PC set up, with little or no hassle
I have mine setup modem > router > airrave and it works no problem. I'm pretty sure the only reason they recommend putting the airrave directly on the modem is to prevent any tech support issues with routers.

and you had no issues at all...did you go LAN>LAN or LAN>WAN?....did you have to change any settings?

Ive had mine setup like this for months without changing any settings. Works just fine for me. Should work for you as well. You probably wont have access to other computers or shares on the network plugged into the router because you will be on a different subnet, likewise, any UPNP apps that you use will try to open ports on the AIRAVE and not the main router, so those may not function either.
LAN from Router > WAN on AIRAVE
LAN from AIRAVE > LAN on PC

Hey.. i was wondering if i can make the HDs wifi router to a local LAN ROUTER ONLY.
I will use the phone as a local router to a test environment. In that i mean that i will use the phone as a test router where many clients can connect to, without using my mobilecompany 3g/whatever line.
When you create the wifi router now, you have to select which line i will use with the router.. but i cant deselect, so it only makes a virtual LAN with no internet connection.. Is that possible?

The first problem you have here, is that you can only connect 1 device to the wifi router, not multiple devices. Secondly, it does only route wifi, so I doubt you'd be able to create a LAN even if you could connect more than 1 device.
Have you looked at WMWifiRouter? (http://www.wmwifirouter.com/)
It's not free, but there is a trial version, and I believe it allows you to connect more than 1 device at a time. It would still be an internet connection, but everything would be assigned an IP address from the HD2, so you should be able to use it as a LAN regardless.
Also, it may be possible to use WMWifiRouter with the phone in Airplane mode, so that would obviously give you a LAN with no internet access. Again, you can't do this with the default router, but you may be able to do it with WMWifiRouter.
ok well..
Well... thats not right..
I had 3 computers connected to it today. So the thing that you only can connect 1 to the wifirouter, is sadly wrong...
I tried the thing putting it on airplane mode, but it doesn't work.. thats why i asked here. hehe.
I'll try the software you said

Okay, I take that back then. I've never actually tried it myself - that was something I read on here. Goes to show how trustworthy advice on here can be lol
Heheh
Found a crap solution. just create a new connection under connections which doesn't have any relation to your mobilecompany.

well that didn't work either.. hehe.. And the problem you suggested is a "copy" of what the HDs already installed wifi router.. So you dont got that posibility.

Yeah, I only suggested that really because I thought that the in-built version could only be used for 1 device at a time.
The only thing I can think of now is to set a proxy for the internet connection on your phone, either a fake one, or a real one that simply blocks HTTP requests.
Worth a try?
..
Yup. Ill try that
i'm actually not sure how to do that.. can you tell me how?

Yes mate. Go to Settings (or Settings tab, Menu, All Settings) and Connections, Connections, and then "Set up my proxy server". I just tried setting it to my home PC (which has no proxy server running on it) and it allows the data connection, but returns 404 errors for any HTTP requests.
I've just tested this and I get 404 errors when making HTTP requests on my laptop. It seems to do what you need.
Hope it helps mate
GREAT! I will test it thanks m8
Hi All,
i switch wi-fi on and the phone find the access point and connect to it. But it doesn't navigate to the net or market or anything else. Otherwise if I use the 3G it works perfectly. Just try to initialize it twice. Same problem.
Some suggestions?

Hmmm, could be a multitude of different things. A few questions:
1 Are you rooted?
2 What security settings do you have on your router?
3 Have you ever been able to connect to the web thru your router?
Answer them and I will try to help.

Hi MrZak,
1) phone is not rooted, unboxed 16 hours ago;
3) I always use the router with a mac and a pc on windows xp
2) I do have some doubt about the router (it's a cisco linksys). Even iPad has several connection problem BUT, i tried a different router last night (3Com) and it doesn't work too while iPad works fine.
Firstly, update the phone from:
Settings / About Phone / System Software Updates
If that doesn't help, try a factory reset.
Also, when you go into your router settings is the phone showing up under devices?

It doesn't work BUT... I tried with the 3com router this morning doing a simple "restore default" in browser web. It worked. I tried to do the same at home with the Cisco Linksys router and... it doesn't work. Could it be the router?

Can you please try to put a static address and ping it from the local network. Preferably ping it from a computer that is connected to the router via cable rather than wireless. If you can ping it, the problem is definately with the router. Also please check if you have MAC security enabled on the router. If you do, you'll have to add the DHD's MAC address to the table.
EDIT: Or you can try to install ping from the market and see if you can ping your router.

Try connecting through an unsecured network like some coffee's hotspot and if it still doesn't work, it's faulty. Until then, it's more likely to be your network setup.
Edit: just read your previous posts again. You say that it worked with the 3Com router, so it's not a problem with the phone. Check the security settings on the Cisco router. Check if it's using AAA/RADIUS server, MAC table, etc. The fact that it connects but no traffic passes through is symptomatic to a security problem, not a hardware one.

Ok so I can connect to my home network just fine.. its a wireless netgear. Then I go to my fathers house and I try to connect to his network and it says authenticating... rendering... disabled! Then in the wireless network list it says the network is "disabled, secured...". Same thing happened with the neighbors wifi. Something I'm missing? I know the password is right so its not that... and I'm almost cretin its not the router ..

just a random thought, have you checked that the mac adress filtering isnt enabled on your fathers router and neighbor. like i said just random and maybe something to look at,,,
I dont think so because their lap top connects just fine
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
okay, but they might have their router settup to allow the lap top and block all others. give it a check in the router settings, or i have come across some routers that just needed to be power cycled/rebooted and phone connected fine afterwards,, maybe give that a try.
Well since i set up both their networks i know that that is not the case. In any event I will try to power cycle the router.
So, I'm getting a tablet and Seagates wireless hard drive to use with it. The only thing is I won't be able to tether to my phone if using the hard drive, so I was thinking of getting a mini wireless portable router.
My question is, how can I get my phone to tether to a wireless router (say a DLINK g730ap) so my tablet can access the Internet and the hard drive within the DLINK? Unless I use the Android Tether as a router, where the hard drive connects to the phone and the tablet connects to the same phone. But I don't know what the transfer speeds are going to be, I imagine it would probably be slow, but I'm not sure.
I hope this makes sense, thanks!!!

I think I understand what you want to do, and it's something I did not too long ago. I actually wanted to see if I could use Sprint Hotspot on my EVO, tethering at 4G, as a replacement for my xfinity internet. The problem is, the router I use requires an Ethernet connection as it's internet input, so I wasn't even sure it was possible. But, apparently, it is. I had to change the firmware on my router, though. If you're trying to do something similar, that's likely what you'll have to do. I got my modded firmware from dd-wrt. But there are a LOT of warnings, and just like upgrading the firmware on your phone can lead to a brick if done incorrectly, the same goes for the router.
I actually couldn't get it to work using Wireless Tether for root users; it only worked with the native Sprint Hotspot, so unless you're paying for the service, it might not be possible. And your bandwidth will be very limited, so don't expect very fast transfer speeds.
Router
You have 2 separate hurdles to cross-
1. DD-WRT compatible Router to handle all 3 devices communication
2. "Wireless Tether" does not create an actual router, it creates an Ad-Hoc based connection using basic ICS, and typical network/routing functions are not available. If you don't want to use Sprints Hotspot app, you will need to get specific instructions on DD-WRT's forum on how to properly configure this type of setup and use your router as a gateway. I'm sure the information is probably posted already somewhere over there. Head over there and start digging. They are to routing as XDA is to mobile phones.
im running this setup now with my phone and xbox and whatever else. like has been mentioned you need to put ddrt on your router and configure it as an ap bridge. then you have to link it to the ....wtf..hold on ill link you.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge#Instructions
Yeah that's the way to go, I use ddwrt in client mode so it pulls my wireless tether from my phone and sends the signal out through the cat5 or 6 cable to whatever is wired to the router. But repeater/bridge mode would be needed to send wired signal and also repeat the signal through the antenna for broadcasting wifi from the router.

I can't figure out how to use this. I turn on WiFi tether, Wifi itself turns off on the phone. Now, I have a WNR3500L with the toastman tomato mod, and I can't figure out how to get it to work with this.
Hi Folks,
I have been postponing this post but nothing ive seemed to do has worked. I THINK after i rooted my issues started. I am unable to browse the net or anything when connected to my wifi. I have reset the router, forgotten and rejoined the network with no avail. All my other devices do not have this issue. Im not really sure what else to say so maybe some of you gurus could pick my brain. Though this is a wifi only issue and on this network. When connected to other networks im fine. My setup is as follows. I have a hard line going from the router the ISP provided in the other end of the house to the router in my room. Like i said my phone is the only device that has issues on this network.
thanks in advance.

That's a pretty strange issue, not sure there is going to be much help... I've had some strange, random issues with my S5. I had issues with wireless, xposed and some other apps after rooting the first time. I got tired of it and used Odin to reflash the stock firmware, then performed a factory reset and rooted afterwords. I haven't had any problems at all after doing this... In all honesty, that's the route I would go if I were you. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, hope you get sorted out

Try connecting standing right next to the router. I had this issue with my Note 2 and it ended up being a physical issue with the wireless chip or antennas. It's actually the reason I'm not on a S5.
Not that u want to hear this, but I had to replace my router for the same reason. My router would only pick up certain devices, had to do with hardware and firewall security settings.

First and foremost you have to isolate the issue to either ur phone or the router. In order to do that its very simple.... can you connect to wifi outside of your house like starbucks or friends wfii? If the answer is yes than the issue lies solely with your router. Let me know what you find out and I can help guide you <---- systems administrator Also please provide the make and model of your router as well as your modem and your ISP.
EDIT: I just read the line where you talk about having another router in your room. I can already tell you this is probably NOT an issue with your phone but rather your setup. The secondary router must be setup as a repeater or bridge OR on a different subnet. This gets very tricky for average home user and I do not recommend you tackle it on your own. Also your main router has to be able to play nice with the secondary and if it's one provided by your ISP it's probably a POS. Also your phone is probably not the only device having issues with this setup.... its the only one you are noticing having issues. Android OS is very sensitive to weird wifi setups and anything out of the norm will set it off. It's actually a great tool in diagnosing wifi issues.

Hi there thanks for the reply. Yes i can connect to any other router without issue. The router is my Router Info:
Name N300 Wireless Router
Model F9K1002v5 (01B)
Firmware 5.00.15(Nov 1 2013)
Serial No. 12349GC2508237
Boot Loader 0.12
I use my tablet and other pcs within this wifi. It is under a different subnet as well. (i think so been a while since ive done any networking) The main router that comes in has the standard IP 192.168.1.1 and the IP for my router in my room (basically set up like this since my room is quite far and gets bad signal from the main router, Cable in -> Main Router -> Hardwire hooked into a port -> ethernet run to my room -> Connected to a port on the wireless router) 192.168.2.1. My ISP is Optimumn Online. My wifi was working fine until about 10 mins ago. seems to happen so often. I did change the security a while back to TKIP + AES on the router and made sure it was the same on the phone and it was working fine for days until like i said about 10 mins ago.

This leads me to think that perhaps the router (however old or new) may have a setting, or an actual limit, on how many devices connect to it.
If not that, perhaps if you rooted, and tried removing bloat, you may have been a bit overzealous and removed something related to WiFi and are now having this issue as a result.
I have only removed the list of apps and bloat that have been posted on Ricks Rom HERE. The ONLY problem I have seen since removing this list, was that I can no longer access PhotoVault correctly. Gives me an error saying that it has no connection to the database, but my 4G is working fine at the time as I was downloading via steam and streaming a movie, and playing a PC game at the same time...

You have the right setup with a different subnet. It's possible the main router is assigning the same IP address that your router has to another device. It would be best if you picked up another router that has repeater capabilities and set it up in repeater mode. Also reserve an IP address for your router from the main router to avoid IP conflicts.
Another possibility is simply the wifi on your router is deteriorating and it's time for a replacement. I recommend the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 if you don't mind spending the $$$. If your on a bit of a budget the Netgear N900 (WNDR4500v2) is the next best thing that supports repeater mode.
well its been still working intermediary. I have to unplug the router and plug it back in then i can browse the net on my phone. idk if id like to lay out that kind of money for a new router. there has to be something else thats causing it. i set the router to reboot everyday, also my phone. its odd though. sometimes it works sometimes it dosent.
