I have a new nook color (running 1.2) that I really would like to turn it in to a real tablet. A couple n00b questions:
1. Is honeycomb the best version to put on? Or is it too new to really be usable for a legit tablet?
2. Do I have to use an sd card? I currently don't have one. I don't mind losing the nook default software (although it might be nice to keep it), but is performance as fast from a micro sd card?
3. Where are the current roms and instructions? The latest stuff is CM7? In just getting into this there seems to be a lot of outdated info out there. Just want to make sure I start with the right bits.
Any other thoughts an advice from others who have done this?
Thanks!

IMO, CM7 or Phiremod V6 (CM7 based) are the best daily drivers for Nook Color right now. Honeycomb is making big progress, but it still not as far along as the other 2 roms. You will need at least 1 SD card, but really you should have a couple. Here is a guide from user "eyeballer" to installing CM7 to your Nook's internal memory. Much more information can be found on the various other roms available, by using the search tab. Best of luck and welcome to the world of Nook!
I tried Froyo and CM7 and couldn't get used to the soft keys. with CM7 2 months ago i wasn't able to connect to my office's wireless network.
I switched over to Deeper-Blue's V4 honeycomb, and the only issue i honestly had for my use of the tablet was no calendar support and having to unmount the SD card in order to install some apps.
I ended up buying Touchdown Exchange to take care of the calendar/email for my business, the wireless worked at my office, and i could play angry birds on a bigger screen as well as reading my kindle app.
I've swapped over to MadCat's new version of honeycomb and while somethings aren't completely stable it is working well for what i do with my tablet, and it's compatible with the latest Kindle app.
just my 2 cents.
MadCat's build of Honeycomb is certainly not perfect, but it's what I settled on for my NC. CM7/Phiremod are great...if you are looking for a super-sized Android phone experience, but not for a tablet. Honeycomb is specifically designed for tablets, and the changes to the UI make it much better for devices with larger screens.
Once the Honeycomb source is released and somebody actually does a dedicated NC build (rather than just the SDK), I don't think there will be any question as to what most people will be running.

Hahah..... You're right about the overgrown android phone with the CM7, but it's sure hard to knock the stability of it at the moment. I'll have to give Madcat's HC a try this weekend. I know huge improvements have been made over the last week or so, but haven't had a chance to flash it.
Overgrown phone? I felt that way with NookieFroyo but CM7 with tablet tweaks is awesome. Softkeys right on the taskbar was genius and actually works as opposed to Softkeys on NookieFroyo hellbent on making me go crazy. Honeycomb is the dream but for now Im loving CM7.
And of course, CM7 (therefore phiremod) also has bluetooth support
Found the madcat version-
No OC kernel tho, thats too bad. Will give it a go anyways.

Does the kindle app actually work correctly for you?
I'm using madcat's v3 atm and the kindle app page's always get messed up, as if it's set for a larger screen.

I went back to the previous version of the kindle app. The latest version did work, but like you said it seemed the pages were messed up.
I changed my LCD density down to 120, but haven't tested the app since then.
I am getting mine tomorrow. Any advices on what to do before use?
Any updates? stock rom?
Thx
i'm still using the stock rom and I have the phone for 2 weeks
I'm impressed by the overall quality and speed, my previous phone was an ETEN X500 which was, of course, quite slow compared to the Huawei.
The only important things to do with the phone are:
1) change the launcher, stock launcher aint that good
2) change the dialer, I'm coming from WM-6.5 and no dialer is as good as microsofts, "dialer one" seems to do the job
3) get a keyboard that suits you!
used smart keyboard pro and dialer one.
witch launcher is good?
You can use ADW launcher, Launcher Pro, Go launcher EX for a far better and customizable experience.
Of course search on market for "launcher". Every day appears one for every taste.
went with the launcher pro.
how can i remove the apps that are preloaded?
root?
Me too need help!
I also gonna buy this phone. How to improve performance by using stock rom? I maybe not ready to flash custom rom yet but maybe will flash new kernel to OC to 1ghz because i want to play games. Is do OC is simple? Does HD games is supported by this devices?

I personally use GO Launcher and I really like. Haven't used Launcher Pro, just seen it in a friends Optimus 2X
I think Go Launcher is better, but this is just a thought
As for stock programs, I'm trying to remove them with Titanium Backup, seems to do the job but I don't know if there are any better ways.
I think that the best thing to do is to wait for xda-cookers to create a nice fast rom and apply it!
will try the GO launcher to. thx.
GO Laucher is slower but has free widgets.
Laucher Pro is much faster.

There is not much you really can do to improve performance without changing rom. Try another launcher and see if that makes the appdrawing faster, but otherwise dead end I would say.
The performance is though enough for many users.
Overclocking is not hard, eg SetCPU.
If you want to overclock, all you need is an OC kernel but your phone needs to be rooted (i think z4root or Androot can do that), then download a kernel and flash it via recovery, you can use stockwells recovery or the other guys recovery (genokalars...i think)...then download SetCPU
First thing, remove all the bloatware it comes with
Use GO Launcher, the stock one is ****.
Root the phone if you want, gives you so much more power.
Well, I've had tons of fun learning about roots and rom mods and all this fun stuff. I got a nook color from work for a decent price a while back just to root and play with. Now I'm thinking of getting a Kindle fire, to add to my collection of rootable things to fiddle with. Kind of a hobby. Since the nook tablet has a locked boot loader... Ugh.
Now... For questions :3
1.) My nook color at 1.2 ghz, and with the V6 supercharger script, lags like a...you know what, when I open the app drawer and scroll. It's terrible. Everything else is ok, slight lag here and there. Is the kindle fire truly faster?
2.) Is it overclock-able? And if so, does this give it any performance gain?
3.) How is the screen, and speakers compared to the Nook Color?
4.) Bluetooth...?
5.) I've heard the kindle fire's boot loader is not locked, is this true?
6.) I've heard the screen has touch issues...is this true? If so, does Cm7/9 resolve such issues or is it a physical defect?
I'm sure alot of you guys have one. How do you like it? How do you feel it performs compared to a Galaxy s2. (That's what I have, and it's fast a heck lol)
Thanks guys
1) The KF stock ROMs are very smooth. CM7 has minimal lag and I have yet to try CM9 on my KF.
2) Yes, intersectRaven's Kernal is OC'd and performs well
3) The screen looks sharper on the KF and I'm not positive if the Nook Tab has a gorilla glass screen. My friend who owns a Nook Tablet wants a KF after playing around with mine.
4) No Bluetooth
5) True, the bootloader isn't locked. Using KindleFireUtility you can root via jcase's burritoroot, load the FireFireFire bootloader, and install the latest TWRP touch-based recovery among other things.
6) I haven't had any touch issues other than the extreme corners of the screen. Hopefully with work happening on a new 3.0.x kernal for ICS that might improve responsiveness a bit.
I love my KF and it's very easy to root and customize to your taste. I think the 7" size is the sweet spot for what I need in a tablet. CM7 is stable and can be easily tweaked to feel more like a tablet and not an oversized phone.
Thanks mate! That pretty much told me all I need to know.
I guess the touch screen issues are software then? That's good ^-^
Is there any possibility of Bluetooth in the future you think?
I bought a KF just because I wanted an Android tablet. It was easy to root and flash with KF Utility and TWRP.
To be honest, I have yet to try CM7 on it, I went straight to CM9. It has it's few bugs and of course no video yet. But, it runs smooth and runs everything I have. I am very impressed by it and it's a hell of a good tablet.
I mainly got for it internet and games, no video for now is fine by me.
i had a nook color before i had my kindle fire, i love my kf way more, it runs so much smoother than the color, i sold my color to my sister because she doesnt need 2 cores, and it does everything she wants it to do with no complaints. she has cm7 on it over clocked super charged and it works fine. but it is no comparison to the kf cm7 or even the buggish cm9 alpha. i thought at first i was going to hate not having volume buttons but, now. im love it.

No video? Does the screen not work? Or do you mean youtube? I mainly want cm7 because I like the look and feel better than ICS, plus I do not want to give up my menu button
stock roms are really smooth and fast but cm9 looks the best. Compared to the nook I wouldn't know I don't have one.

He's referring to CM9 builds having lack of Hardware Acceleration at this point. CM7 builds play videos just fine
CM9 has video working okay. No HD, and it's a bit choppy, but it works. I personally love it, looks a lot better than the stock ROM. You can OC the KF too, I've got mine at 1.2 GHz.
I have tried CM7 but it is not very smooth.
Is there any rom better?
For ICS rom, I have tried the Hashcode Zone one but after flashed the rom, my fire just stuck at the booting animation......so I have only flashed CM7 right now.
Personally I love running whistletop's cm7, it runs super smooth for me, and most importantly HW acceleration works as well as all video (flash, HD YouTUbe), which you currently loose with CM9 until the devs get HW acceleration working. Until then, I'm sticking with CM7.
I've been running Whistlestop's CM7 since late January and it's been great-- no wifi issues, SOD, etc. I'm holding out for hardware video acceleration (and hopefully USB OTG) before I move on to ICS.

ICS CM9 Kang ROM Themed recommendation
Since yesterday I am using the ICS CM9 Kang ROM Themed. Before I was using the CM7 barebones. The ICS CM9 Kang ROM is fantastic. It is extremly fast and responsive. The Hardware UI acceleration is not working yet for HD and some times the system frizes. But I can only recommend the use!!
Try this ics ROM at this link:

To me CM7 is the best ROM since everything works. The build in THIS post seems to be slightly better than the other CM7 builds that I've tried.
I've been using jackpot Clavins CM9 on my KF since mid January and love it. While the hardware acceleration doesnt work, everything else runs great. Very fast and newest builds have eliminated SOD issues.
Is there a specific ROM that is Clavin's CM9, or are you building yourself from his github. I see a lot of guys taking his source and making their own ROMs, but nothing specific from Clavin.
Any other opinions on this? I am looking for a ICS Rom which one works the best and is the most stable?
I'm using MIUI from the miui.us, and it's pretty awesome. Still needs some work but sounds like they all do - most issues just seem to be display formatting needing a little tweaking.
You kinda gotta be an MIUI person though, it's a little Apple-esque, not for everyone, though I find tablet usage may be a little less polarizing...

I haven't exactly tested ICS roms extensively, but I'm currently using...
NRGZ28 Energy ICS KANG Rom
I really like it, and the most recent issues fix the Sleep Of Death issues they were having. I would definitely suggest it if your interested in ICS. Get it, flash it, see how it feels and if there's anything that you do that the lack of HW Accel effects. If not then your good.
It comes with NovaLauncher, and since I have a copy of ADW EX, I tried putting that over top of Nova, but I found it to be more sluggish. I would suggest staying pretty much bare bones on what the rom gives you, maybe adjust the awake clocks a little (down clock to 1.0GHz for stock, or under clock it to press the battery out a little further).
MoDaCo would be my suggestion otherwise. It's just Gingerbread, so it's the same old Android stuff. I've never been a huge fan of CM7, but that's just me

I agree that's (IMO) the best ICS ROM at the moment. However, Sleep of Death is still an issue. I'm not sure whether I'm terribly unlucky or what, but I get it every single time I attempt to shut down the KF, no exceptions, ever since 3-15 came out. Never had a SOD on 3-13.
Either way, I second that ROM as awesome among ICS ROMs.
Me likey.

I am also using Energy's KANG. I have not yet encountered the SOD. I used CM7 for a while, but wanted to try out ICS, and am glad I did.
Very happy with it, but am closely watching hashcode's kernel development thread.

Though limited by stock settings options, wallpaper options, Gr7 by modaco is the smoothest running imho, just throw adw/golauncher so your not stuck on the stock launcher.

I use Energy ICS Kang rom v. 4.29.2012 ant it rocks. You should try it.
For me, it only has few small issues: comes from sleep only on the second press of the button, does not always show that battery is charging while it charges.

You can still access instant videos through your browser, I use Dolphin Browser HD. I made a bookmark and put it on my desktop.
For the record, I'm using Team Kang ICS Build 35
I have the Energy ICS rom installed right now and don't like it at all, its just not that stable, on the other hand I don't like the carousel concept. I would like to install something close to stock that isn't going to run my battery dead real fast and the best compatibility with the Kindle Fire's hardware. There are just so many different ones out there, it doesn't have to be ICS, Honeycomb is fine. I was just hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks
maybe try modaco with go launcher:

If you're like me and lack of Hardware Acceleration is not an issue, Jackpot/Hashcode/Nind/JDom's version of ICS is great. I use it as my daily now with Nova Launcher and have no issues. You might need to download the gapps fixer(posted in the thread as well) to fix calendar sync

newest version of ROM Download
Tri4x, out of curiosity were you using the 3/15 version of Energy or the 3/19? I flashed 3/15 on my kindle, and I loved the interface, but once it started getting sleep of death I thought "well I guess I'm going back to stock".
When I saw the 3/19 update in action I was actually really impressed at the improvement. Lack of HW Accel does suck though.
b63 Already suggested MoDaCo if you would prefer a stock rom, I've considered flashing back just to get HW Accel back. It's a really good rom, feels very smooth.
I'm sorry but what is HW UI Acceleration ?
Don't really understand that....
Thank for explain it to me.

I've been using Energy ROM for about a week and not a single time have I thought about going back to stock, not even due to lack of HWA (yes, I miss netflix from time to time, but since I don't really watch that much TV/Movies on the go I guess is just a particular case where I am not that much affected) plus since changing to ICS I find myself using more my KF as a real tablet and not just a glorified e-reader.
Using 3/19 release of Energy and not seeing a lot of issues others are reporting (SOD only a couple of times)
Just my 2 cents
Hi all!
After reading around and searching for custom roms for the KF, I still do not completely get to the point. This is what I understand
- Stock ROM mods only play around with some installed apps, google market, root
- CM7 is Gingerbread and supports HWA
- Energy CM9 is based on ICS and lacks HWA support (currently on my KF)
What I don't understand is, why CM9 cannot use the kernel from CM7 or Stock.
Does ICS rely on certain kernel features? Or what is the reason?
Thanks.
P.S. If this is an RTFM in any way I'd appreciate being directed to the right point.
I'll put ashes on my hair myself, than.

The second I know. But I could not find out why it is so important to use a newer kernel.
The first link sheds some light. I'll dig deeper which parts of the Android framework are responsible for the userland <-> kernel connection and how they are "version" (GB / ICS) relevant.
Thank you for the links. I did my first Linux port for a custom ARM HW 13 years ago. Russel would never send links. Got flamed more than once ;-)
