Thanks for the reply. I meant I bought the Tab without a data plan and do not wish to. It keeps trying to activate but cant. I am looking for a way around it.

I've been grappling with this for a while now, and unfortunately, the activation process can only happen if you were to have service. You could, thanks to Sprint's 30 money back guarantee, buy a month of service, activate your device, and then cancel the service within a few days and you won't be charged. Of course, this invovles spending a whole lot of time on the phone with Sprint, or going into a Sprint store, which you may not want to do. Don't worry though, there is another option.
I decided I didn't want to go through any hassle, so I spent some time fooling around with the system and came up with the following method. It took me a while to in the application manager to track down the programs responsible for the activation prompt, but I found them. What you need to do is this:
NOTE: I have tested this on the SPRINT Tab with the latest software.
*DO NOT uninstall any of these apps, just "Freeze" them. If you delete any, you may loose the ability to do firmware and Android OS updates!*
1. Root your Tab, (preferably with z4root), I suggest using the "permanent root" option.
2. Go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> and check "USB Debugging"
3. Install Titanium Backup
4. Run Titanium Backup and go into "Backup/Restore" Look for "Software Update 1.5.0" in the list.
5. Tap the application name.
6. On the window that comes up, select "Freeze" It will give you a confirmation of success and the "Freeze" button will change to "Defrost" now hit the back button.
7. Locate "Sprint Installer 2.0", "Sprint Zone SZ 2.1.11", and "System Updates 1.0.0" Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each of these applications.
8. Close Titanium Backup
9. Restart
Now the activation prompt will not come up and it won't interrupt you when using your Tab. It doesn't affect anything if you plan to use the Tab off-contract with Wifi only.
I chose to "Freeze" the apps because it denies them access to the system, which removes the activation problem. I didn't uninstall them, though because if you want to activate it on the network at any time later, or you need to do a Firmware/Android OS update through official channels, you may need these apps.
If you want to undo this at any time, follow the directions the same way, but during step 6 select "Defrost" instead of "Freeze"
I hope this helps.
Thanks
Works great! Thanks for the info.
It´s posible active the phone

Hi there, Do you think is´t posible to liberate the phone?
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Worked GREAT! Thanks!
... but I have a question regarding 2 of the items that are frozen now. like the Software Update 1.5.0 & System Updates 1.0.0 --- are they specific to sprint? what exactly are these for and why do these have to be frozen in order to disable the sprint activation? will i still be able to get firmware updates and all that jazz?
if i want to check for updates, do i need to defrost these?
How to get root app
maybe I'm missing something but how do you get the root app. I.e. to bypass activation you need a root application. However I can't find a way to download apps without the tab being activated. Seems like a paradox. In a nut shell how can I get the z4root application installed when the tab is not yet activated?
Thanks for any help
You can always turn on the WiFi, and connect it to an available network to gain access to the Market.
I too have been struggling with the activation prompt, and since Rooting is still somewhat touchy with our SPH-P100, I've found that the best answer is to put your Tab in Airplane mode, and manually turn on the WiFi. This will keep any options you're unsure of on the back burner 'til the devs here have some more time to save money for, and play with the Tab!

You can find z4root here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
I have a Sprint tab, and if you hit cancel on the activation each time you turn the device on, you can still access your home screen and all the apps and enable wifi to access the market.
To permanently bypass activation, side load & install the z4root app from the link above and install Titanum Backup from the market .. follow the instructions posted by rkmj earlier in this thread.

Sorry for taking so long to respond to this, but my XDA notification settings were all screwed up. I just realized that you asked this. Software Update 1.5.0 and System Updates seem to be Samsung apps that are tied directly to Sprint Zone and the activtion prompt. They run periodically and when they activate, they query Sprint Zone to see if the device has been activated on the network. In order to stop the activation prompt, these need to stop running.
I can't really tell about firmware updates just yet. Based on the way Sprint generally provides them, you will have the option of OTA or via PC. With this fix in place, you will need to run the update via the PC. If you wanted to get the firmware updates OTA, you will need to defrost the programs. Unfortunately, you will also have to activate the device.
My method doesn't change anything on the device. It just disables the prompt. In order to receive anything OTA, you will have to activate the device. I have a theory about how you can both disable the prompt and still query for OTA updates, but I have to do a bit of testing first. I will post back here once I have tested it completely.
hey guys is there a way to back up apps over zune because it sucks every time you install a new rom that you have to reinstall every app i can see over zune wich apps where installed previusly but i cant just download like 30 apps... is there a solution to this problem?
i also was curious about this. i know the android market automatically installs all your apps, but with all the nodo, mango beta 1, beta 2 coming out, it really sucks having to reinstall all your apps again. atleast an app back up would be nice, i dont mind losing my info.
stenk - it your just interested in atleast saving your "game progress" etc. see that here.

Everytime i install rom i just sync up my phone to Zune software setup my live account on phone and it downloads all of my apps for me.
Does this everytime i never have to install a single app

Ok, and thats why some devs create this zune app backup because you can backup apps which was installed directly in phone.
you can manually copy the install data and the isolated storge data which is essentially an app backup, but we need to add the icons back in to the start menu.
Ive not looked in to that but i know its not a windows startmenu style of system its maybe some XML file.
it wouldnt take much to make a program to backup this stuff now that we have root access but im not a programmer, a wee bit of VBA is as much as i know
Dear Experts,
i am new to this forum, recently i brought htc wildfire but i am unable to download any applications from android market, when i log in android market website it shows no android device found with this id try another id, this is same id which i was entered initial phone setup.
And also i am not able to open android market application in my mobile when i click on this its take some time to loading and immediately close the application.
I try many forums for the solution some people told me to make factory reset i did but same prob no use.
hope.......
regards,
if u're using stock rom it's a bit strange :s did you set your account google ?
Freshly format your phone. During initial setup add gmail account and after setup make sure you enable background data and autosync.
And first you need to use phone market application to download something. If it gives error wait for sometime and download again. Then you can even access market from browser.
And suppose if you format the phone and haven't added gmail account yet, then you cannot use market through browser until you add the account to phone and download atleast an app from phone market (actually accepting to market "terms of service" is enough. It comes for 1st time when you open market).

when I press system updates under settings the popup to install now or install later shows up.
I read somewhere that you can do it by going to settings - application manager - all - Google services framework and hitting disable, and you won't see it again until you reactivate.
Hope it works.

Same problem here.
Flashed KK firmware, everything fast, good, great.
I have disabled the OTA checkbox as soon as I could.
But the OTA still popped up, and it says it's now downloaded.
How could I fix this?
I don't want LP until it's fixed.
(Non rooted, ofc.)

So I tried the following, WITHOUT LUCK:
- Install sim card, launch phone, DO NOT connect to wifi, disable update box.
Once wifi is on, it will download.
- Launch phone without SIM card, NO wifi, and disable box.
Well, guess what? It will just download once I add a wifi connection.
It looks like the phone will just do this at the first start.
But where is the update file? I seriously want to keep KitKat.
Let me know if anyone got an idea.
Hi,
I have the same problem, do you have found a solution ?
Thank you.
I think there is only one way to do this. You have to factory reset your device and during setup, where it asks you to sign in to your google accounts and connect to your samsung account, don't connect your samsung account.
I think that this is what notifies you about the OTA updates.
PS: I just remembered! Maybe you don't have to factory reset! You could try removing your Samsung account from your device's settings. Never tried it though so not sure if this will work (because when signing in you also agree to a user agreement, don't know if that has anything to do with it - you know the things nobody reads about but always agrees).
Pros:
No OTA updates.
Cons:
No backup and restore for your contacts, sms, emails, wallpapers, phone logs, priority senders (email addresses), spam addresses (email), spam filter (messages) and call rejection list.
No updates for ANY Samsung app or service including but not limited to S Voice, S Translator, etc.
Its really up to you, if you can find apps that could replace those services and stay with the previous versions of Samsung's apps (or find replacements for those too), then I don't see a reason why not to skip Samsung's Account Login.

I have posted a tutorial, an entire thread with steps detailed.
You CAN disable the OTA notification permanently, you do NOT need root. Just read my thread.

PS.: @nicolas: That will still update your system. Read the tutorial.

1) Yes, you have to wipe.
2) You can use "Super Backup" from Play Store to backup just about everything important. (For the rest, just copy every file/folder from phone.)
3) Contacting samsung... well, good luck with that!

Yes, you have to remove the sim card if it supports data connection (mobile data).
Ps.: I have also contacted Samsung to downgrade my S3 when it received the 4.4 update which made it lag.
They tripped knox first (lol), took in my phone to replace motherboard, then when I got it back, it had 4.4 again and they said "downgrade is not supported".
10/10.
good job Samsung
So I've reinit my phone with SIM inside (just to try), when selecting operator window appears I close it, I don't connect to Wifi, I don't add Google or Samsung account and when possible I disable mobile data. I uncheck auto update and OTA notification has not appear since reinit
Perhaps the problem is solved, I'm watching it
Oh sh** OTA is back
Edit : Do you have a Samsung account ? It seems OTA is back since I've added my Samsung account...
Hopefully this can help some people who don't want to use custom recovery or need root.
My MIX came with a vendor rom from gearbest "Global" 8.0.8.0.0 Stable. I was able to figure out that the bootloader was unlocked through the fastboot method. The vendor ROM didn't have the MIUnlock status within the developer options. I requested for unlock before I knew about the fastboot method. The updater app wouldn't work, no matter which app ROM from xiaomi I downloaded. It would always give me the cannot verify error. But I finally was able to flash to the Dev Rom (no eu) weekly build and then add gapps to it. None of this required twrp or rooting. So here are my steps that I went through. Yes there is Chinese bloatware, but many you can uninstall.
1. Make sure it's unlocked. I used the fastboot option via command prompt. I used this.
2. download XiaomiFlash (old version) here. The newest version kept giving me a Specified cast is invalid problem. you can read about it here
3. Download latest fastboot update Developer ROM.
4. Follow steps 4 through 6 on this webpage here. Make sure you decompress the .tgz file.
My vendor ROM had the Playstore access. But after the update, it was giving me a server error. So I installed the following apps in this order to get it working again. If at some point the install fails, then uninstall the app first and reinstall.
1. Install Google Services Framework 6.0.1
2. Install Google Play Services
3. Install Google Account Manager
4. Install Google Play Store
Reboot and you should have access to the google apps and start downloading other google apps. I then also started uninstalling all of the chinese apps that I couldn't read/understand.
If this is not new, then let this thread die. If this works for you. awesome.
Things that I still can't get to work
1. Android Pay
2. Google Play Movies still says this device is not supported.
3. Can't sync with google contacts
Update I haven't tested this, but you can try it on the Dev or the Stable
http://en.miui.com/thread-294362-1-1.html
@Thorin78
A well put together resource is always welcome.
I think I have an answer/solution for some of your ongoing issues:
1) Android Pay not working:
The unlocked bootloader is probably the reason it's not working.I wouldn't recommend relocking it unless you're on an official Xiaomi ROM.
2) Cannot add new contacts:
I've run into that as well. For now, I'm just adding them on my PC via G-Mail (new contacts).Next time you sync on your phone & you should see the new contacts.
3) Google Play Movies issues may be a location issue. If the phone/Google settings isn't allowing for the exact area/country location where you are/Google Play Movies is official, then that may be the problem.
Loading one of the other ROMs may solve this.
These issues may possibly be solved utilizing root apps/Xposed/etc..... IDK,but,if one is savvy enough to unlock the bootloader/Root/ROM/install Xposed framework & modules, then they can likely find those solutions w/o any assistance.

Thanks @KOLIOSIS, I'm not as concerned w/ #1 and #3 so much. But now I can't get contacts to even sync or show up. It's quite weird. It's not part of the sync procedure.
I do agree, if people are already savvy enough to go through the entire process w/ twrp, they probably are better off w/ that procedure.
Anyways, if this isn't working for others either, hope it's made them more comfortable going the next step of twrp.

For whatever reason,(Google) contacts isn't automatically updating/syncing on the MIX.
Until there's a fix, you'll have to go to SETTINGS > ACCOUNTS > OTHER ACCOUNTS > GOOGLE
Tap on the affected Google account & tap CONTACTS.
Here's where part of the bug lies,as when doing so,the sync is turned off instead of syncing. Simply turn it back on & your contacts should update/match whatever you have on your desktop PC.

Sounds like you've done your homework,IDK what else to suggest regarding contacts/syncing.
The only thing I can recommend is using the Nuclear Option & switching to either the EU ROM 6.12.xx (weekly) or the GlobeROM 6.12.xx
Oh this is the Xiaomi Dev GlobeROm.
But ya, EU ROM soon if I can't get this working. It's also interesting that I got root via the Permissions options in the settings.
I think someone fixed it from Xiaomi. Check here. You can download the apk, I haven't yet.

To get the google contacts working, you need to assigned all permission to it first then remove and add your google account again.

I had the same problem on my MIX. The 1st time I saved my contacts on another device as a .vcf file, and imported it from the MIX's contacts menu. Suddenly contacts appeared under Google account along with everything else.
