Upgrade in May - Fascinate General

Hey all!
Just wanted to see what everyone thought would be a good upgrade to move on from my Fascinate... I really love my Fascinate and like Samsung.... but wasn't sure if an HTC phone would be better, or to stick with the Samsung family... Any thoughts?
I know going to a Iphone would be horrid after being so use to customizing everything!
I really love ICS, so I think it would be a requirement for my next phone as well.
Thanks in advance for any comments you make, positive or negative.

the onlything worth upgrading from this device would be the gnex right now...jmo

My upgrade isn't til July, so I'll be keenly watching what happens with the GSIII. If I were to upgrade this month or next, I'd get the nexus for sure. With the success of the GSII, I'd be really surprised if Verizon didn't get a GSIII variant.

+1 for the Galaxy S 3..

As an extremely sour GNexus user, I feel obligated to post in this thread, and I hope I'm not too late to save you a ton of trouble.
The Nexus is really an overrated device, with horrible screen problems and a very weak processor. Not to mention, for the pricetag you're getting what's considered mediocre specs for a phone purchased in 2012. If the Nexus were released the summer of 2011, it'd be a sure hit and it'd be Verizons answer to the Galaxy S II (which it isn't even comparable to imo, the S II is far better.)
That said, it wasn't released in the summer, it was released on the brink of the new year, and with the Galaxy S III right around the corner, probable press release in May and possible street release before end of July, I'd say hold onto your butt and sit tight! Don't throw away your upgrade on a mediocre overrated device! Wait for the real deal, the Galaxy S III!
Sorry, I know I sound like some cheap salesman trying to sell you my product, but honestly I feel so bitter towards the bastardized Nexus that I can't let someone fall for it's junkiness like I did. Thankfully enough I pulled out of that disaster before it was too late.

Thank you for your opinion! I will definitelly be keeping an eye open for what is coming out next... i thought about going to HTC way as well... how do you like your HTC?

I would definitely hold off and wait for SGIII. Have you tried AOKP b31 yet? Before making the jump to ICS, I couldn't wait to get rid of this phone. After making the jump, I am loving it, and think it can definitely bridge the gap until SGIII comes out.
With AOKP b31, I turned GPS on, opened GPS test, and the phone was locked as soon as the app opened... and this has never happened to me with any other ROM before.

Seriously, save your money and wait for the next round of phones with better lte battery life. Theres nothing worth upgrading to right now

[Q] Mytouch or wait for samsung nexus 2?

I think I might hold off on the mytouch 4g for a couple of days until the announcement of the nexus 2. What you guys think?

Idk, I guess I would wait just to see what the Nexus 2 will look like, and the specs. But I think the myTouch 4G will still be the better device.

Samsung, YUCK!!! Get the HTC!!!
Dude get the MT4G, Nexus 2 isn't being announced on Nov. 8th (My birthday ). Whoever got the emails misinterpreted it. It's a Samsung Continuum.
There’s an ENORMOUS problem with this concept, the biggest of which being that it was dead wrong. Anyone who actually got the email from Samsung’s PR firm, or bothers to communicate with Samsung at all would know that the November 8th Samsung event is the launch of the Samsung Continuum. For those unaware, this device is completely Samsung, and a unique concept at that, but I will leave details out for the release.
In short guys, it’s bogus. The 8th will not yield a Nexus 2 and the Continuum will not have Gingerbread. Stay tuned though, it will still be a great party.

I am not sure whether is i9020 nexus II or not, but i9020 passed FCC with AWS band (good for T-Mobile and Wind), so this phone will be on my purchase list.
I love mine. Would not trade for a nexus 1 but the nexus 2 may have a 1.5 Ghz processor when it launches. This time it isn't supposed to be on online exclusive either. No confirmation on that so don't hold me to it. Lol.

i'm debating this as well. If the nexus 2 has better specs than my vibrant, I might just get that, but for now i'm leaning towards the 4g.
Even if the specs were similar, I might lean towards the upcoming Nexus phone because it will be unlocked and ready for root.
That will take half of the work and danger out of customization and I bet you will see a lot of community mods aimed at the device.
Nothing against the MyTouch, but HTC needs to offer you something in exchange for dealing with their bloatware and restrictions on the phone. Maybe some killer app or interface?
the nexus 2/S will also have the latest version of android. the mytouch will probably have to wait several months to see an upgrade.
Talk about ignorance, everyone hears Samsung as the manufacturer and automatically think the Nexus 2 is gonna suck. If it's going to be an actual Google phone, then Google will be doing the software updates and such. Damn people, stop the hate on Samsung because it's getting really annoying.
If Samsung is going to announce it, then just wait. You'll only have to wait one week, that's all. It's not like it'll be the end of the world within that time frame.
I doubt that it is the Nexus 2, Google said it isn't happening, the people are Gizmodo are like the troll on this forum; MY FRIEND IS A TMO EMPLOYEE AND HE SAYS SAMSUNG VIBRANT WON'T GET FROYO TIL NEXT YEAR. no, be patient, even then the Nexus can't have more than a first gen humming bird or a second gen snapdragon/scorpion. And if the nexus two is coming, and you want it... the event is on the 8th, return the mt4g and wait for the new device... its not really hard to do lol

Thanks For Making my life easier. That was the exact EXCRUTIATING worry going thru my head.
That is what I will do.
Bottom line: The Nexus Two will be a great phone. Most agree HTC makes more solid (i.e. built like a brick ****house) and appealing phones (tmo employee and I agreed) phone.
But with the Nexus two being great, the best phone to date and will be for a year so they say, STILL, the Mytouch 4g is top notch until it comes out, Correct? (please validate me LOL ) And if I were to keep the Mytouch, the Nexus is not all THAT better is it
Do you know or can u find out if they will make that foolish mistake of NO Flash
Do you know why they would do that, being a Senior member on here
Again , Thank You and have a great Halloween

Perfectly stated. That is exactly what I plan to do. I would have waited at least a week to get the MT4g anyway. I need to read at least 100 reviews, and see video samples, photo samples, yada, yada ...to death.
If Samsung anounces the Google Experience phone in the interim, so much the better, and I wait. Having owned the Vibrant for a month, I would love a Google Experience Samsung phone. I'm sure Google would ensure it's done right.
I read the pros and cons on Cnet and it seems like HTC's speakerphone still sucks. Meaning, it is low just like with the G1. I hope its not true, since HTC does make good hardware, but low speaker volume sucks.
I don't profess to know nearly as much as most on here...but fwiw, my friends old mytouch slide, which he had for a week before he opted for the Vibrant, ...he LOVED the music player and the volume on it and the speaker in general. The speakerphone technology itself could change that

First Nexus 3 Leak - Possibly made by HTC and headed to Sprint

http://www.redmondpie.com/nexus-3-spotted-in-the-wild-leaked-photo/
Looks pretty iPhone 3ish, but no buttons is pretty sweet looking and would make sense because 2.4/Ice Cream is supposed to smash all of the Androids together/into one OS, right?
Oh decisions, decisions. Looks pretty sick. And if it is made by HTC, I might have to save up for this one.

In some ways, I'm glad my upgrade isn't until January....
I wouldn't look into the design too much either. It's way too early and is probably just a test device they quickly put together to test/develop on honeycombs new form factor.
as the other nexus...
most likely in January/February time frame
Sweet, it'll be for Sprint as well. My upgrade is in April 2012 so I'll wait till Nexus 3 comes out so I can get that. Tegra 3 quad core Ice Cream Sandwich. Going to be awesome.

Sprint did announce a Nexus One. They just canceled it. Plus Sprint and Google now share what is probably the tightest cooperation out of any carrier so a Sprint Nexus 3 on launch day is very likely now.

People like to stick to HTC but HTC has had a lot of problems too. I own a N1 and the touch screen sucks, build quality looks nice on the outside but almost always has issues like light bleeding (EVO), and they are known to stick with old chipsets (like slightly updating the same 2008 Scorpion core for their dual cores).
I personally would like to see a Moto Nexus. They do a good job with hardware.
Im sure its just a prototype but that is one ugly phone. I wouldnt buy it off looks already....
Yeah, I'm usually not a big fan of chrome / silver anything ... as a test device I wouldn't be surprised to see it change. Maybe if we complain enough we can ensure a chrome edging doesn't make the final cut.
I will definitely be sitting on my Evo, waiting and waiting and waiting.

I can't get the evo 3D anyways just used my girl's upgrade and she got the nexus s; my upgrade isn't until August so I'm thinking galaxy s 2 maybe. She'd kill me if I spent 599 on a phone when my upgrade is a few months away lol. You guys think by August sprint will launch another device? I'm not into the whole design and 3D gimmick stuff anyways.
Sweet! I would be stoked if the nexus 3 is made by HTC. The nexus s is great and all but Samsung's continuing radio issues make their phones less desirable to own. I'll take a little light leak over a shotty radio any day. May have to sell my 3d for this one.

Hmm, even with the news of the Atrix-like device coming to Sprint I have even less reason to just jump on a phone. For a second there I was gonna pull the trigger on the NS but I'm glad I didn't. I had seen word of that possibly dropping mid summer, but I'm pretty sure that was just rumor. That GS2 - should it come through - is a tempting one. Haven't heard anything on possible / rumored date of landing, but I haven't done a good job of keeping up with everything, either.
I'm just gonna play the waiting game. Something I'm usually not good with, but I've done well enough with putting off a tablet purchase. And totally agree on the Evo 3D - not sure how I feel about it. Especially if some other more than capable device comes to Sprint.

That is a phenomenal amount of sales, and got me thinking out of all those people who purchased this phone only a very small percentage in comparasion have discovered XDA and were exposed to some of the super ROM's/Kernels/Mods/Tweaks/Themes,etc that are available.
Unfortunately this has also brought with it a serious amount of noobs who ask the same questions day in, day out without searching the forum.

i can put any bet that when the s3 is out it will be more than double that amount mate. but i am seriously thinking of sticking with my s2 till the new nexus comes out..and for only the updates alone....as codeworkx said next phone shall be nexus as updates are instant and code straight away hence why you would get nothing but the best straight away regarding firmware that is. and the s2 is doing more than it should be for me and is quite good enough..and with ICS just around the corner still got alot of life in it for me...So i shall watch the coming months with quite a bit of interest
It's gonna take a lot for me to jump ship from this amazing phone but by all accounts it will most likely be Sammy again with the Galaxy S3 if various rumours about the specs are to be believed, i wasn't tempted by the Nexus i believe they failed miserably by having not having anything for a micro SD card and only a 5MP camera, again though if Samsung are gonna charge €600+ for the GS3 that is out of most peoples reach unless they sign up to a long contract and get it on bill pay which is a big no no for me (always buy outright) so it depends on the price too.

Yeah i do believe the Galaxy S3 will be the absolute don daddy of them all as regards smartphones
Also I'm sick of these iPhone wankers constantly saying they have the best phone ever made, when challenged and presented with the actual facts they go all defensive and end up making a fool of themselves, maybe when the Galaxy S3 is released they might finally shut up (although many are so brainwashed i doubt it)

No way - the new iPhone 4s(Subsection 2, Clause a, Parts iv-viii) will be out by then. It has slightly more rounded corners, is a slightly different shade of black (called Jacobean Stained Ebony), has a digital assistant that compliments your hair and asks if you have lost weight, and it comes with an app that releases onion essence whenever 'Steve Jobs' is mentioned so that the user is able to produce on-demand salty tears of weepage for the saintly plagiariser.

not denying that mate Nexus compare to the s2 no contest at all in my eyes. the only thing going for it is the first updates that it gets when a new firmware upgrade gets released and that it is easier to port to that phone and on the plus side that it is pure google...for me that is good enough reason as it is

I would agree with you if the nexus line hardware wise was in same class as galaxy one. Only nexus one was identical to desire by HTC, after that both nexus iterations were left wanting with their sgs1 and sgs2 counterparts. Which leads me to conclusion that next nexus will be hardware inferior to sgs3 despite 6 months difference, in which case aosp be damned...
The beauty of this phone is that, no matter how many people own it, with institutions like xda and the development scene of Android you still have the ability to have phone that is unique and set it apart from other SGS2 users. I do hope that more people will keep discovering xda and the AOSP community so that it can keep growing and improving.

Waiting for the NEXT Nexus too...
I too am waiting for the Next NEXUS, totally disappointed with the current Nexus being on Verizon with very little in the bleeding edge of technology - I have a Nexus One and that phone was rock solid and loved the super quick updates and the pure Google Experience. While I love my current Galaxy S2, Samsung insists on crapping it phone up with TouchWiz - so glad that I bought this phone unlocked and been running custom Roms ever since and haven't looked back - Come On Google, Do the Right Thing and bring back the Nexus Spirit that we come to grow and LOVE!!!

Buy, or wait for next Nexus?

Looking for honest opinions. I know the GS3 is the best phone today, and there will always be a new thing coming out soon. But I feel like now is a time when in a few months, there might be a series of Nexus phones coming out, and these 2 will be the best Android devices for a while.
I've lived with my Evo for 2 years and a few more months is fine if there's a good chance the Nexus will be a big leap. On the other hand its so tempting to just get the GS3

It will definitely be interesting to see what the new nexus devices come out with. I always say I'll wait for this or wait for that, but inevitably I cave. You can't go wrong with the Galaxy S3. The international model will always have a strong developer following. I worry that the legendary developer following will become very fragmented when 5 different nexus devices are released. That has always been a claim to fame for the nexus line.

S3 for me hands down.
GNex was a pretty big disappointment for me. The only thing it had going for it was Vanilla Android 4.0 ICS. Everything else about the phone I really hated. If Samsung follows the same trend with the next Nexus, then the next Nexus will be another disappointment in my books.
However, rumors whisper the next Nexus may be a Motorola phone. We'll see.

If the next Nexus is a Motorola, then that will be a disappointment. Even though Google owns Motorola Mobility, If i see another "Droid" by Motorola I'm gonna projectile vomit...
Even though the GNex did not turn heads with its CPU/GPU/Cam, I think it was still a breakthrough device, it's still, to this day imho the best looking device out, front is literally flawless. LED notifier anyone? Even though I'm probably/most likely going to buy the SGS3, it's gonna be tough going back to a device that actually has buttons, that **** is old.....

The next Nexus is not going to be launched until the end of the year, given how quickly devices/tech rolls over, 5 months for a device is already pushing it. The S3 is a beastly of a phone, but trust me, by October/November, there will be rumblings of the S4, the Nexus will be out, or multiple Nexuses, and while most are going to still be waiting for ICS, Nexus users will be rockin' Jelly Bean..
I quite want one, but doubt I'll find anyone to take my skyrocket + cash for this beast of a phone.
No upgrades on my account until september/October I forget. So I guess I'll have to see if anything is good then if nobody will trade me now.

I think it's pretty dumb to wait for vaporware. If this was a device that had specs that'd make sense, but it seems pretty silly to wait on something and not even know WTF you're waiting for.
edit: Oh, sorry it isn't even vaporware. That's something that's announced and doesn't come to fruition. This hasn't even been announced or hinted at as of yet... silly.

We'll see.

I read a little while back that Google will work with multiple manufacturers for the next line of Nexus phones, including HTC, Samsung, Motorolla, and LG.

As you noted, there's always something new coming out. This means that the decision of when to jump in is entirely personal. I really think you should lay out your own minimum requirements and go from there. For me, the GS3 is a no go because one of my requirements is a next gen GPU, not a refreshed 2011 GPU. That's just one example of how I decide if I'm willing to upgrade yet. Until my desired specs are met I'm holding out with my sensation.

The nexus has repeatedly represent the minimum standard for android and I emphasize the minimum standard. Starting with the nexus one, first 1ghz android. Nexus s with old galaxy s 1ghz and now current galaxy nexus with a dual core 1ghz. Samsung galaxy s series has been known for exceeding that standard and creating
Premium specs. Galaxy s had the best cup/gpu, s2 best cup/gpu and now s3 which has demonstrated it has the top dog cpu /gpu. Samsung has show again and again it s committed to the best.

if you wait long enough, you could buy google glass.
joking aside, i think the GS3 is a significant upgrade from the phones from the S2 era... and i believe that the new nexus phone will not present that much of an upgrade save for Jelly Bean.

This is so true, and many people share the same sentiment on the galaxy nexus.
vanilla android is great but the hardware is so lacking and gimp.
The promise of having the latest upgrade is not true anymore, it barely got 4.0.4.
I felt sorry for the people that kept their phone stocked and was stuck on the buggy 4.0.1...
but yeah it did look sexy..
I for one would like to hear more details on what the five Nexus devices really are. Are they going to be competing phones, phones with predetermined near-identical specs for dev compatibility, or not phones at all? The former is the ideal case, in terms of hardware at least.1 Combined with the customizable soft nav-bar (I can't help but find non-customizable, non-rotatable nav buttons lame as hell now) the choice would be a no-brainer for me.
But that's an ideal scenario. (Nope, ideal scenario is the Nexus Note )
1 The second would probably be ideal for homebrew deving, but without competition there's no guarantee of real hardware improvements.
There are already ample amount of posts regarding this, so it's not fair to ask the same thing again and again, instead searching would have given you all the answers you need

The gnexus is 1.2 ghz omap. 4460 not 1. Do the ghz really matter anymore? All. These damn processors are fast. I want quadcore A15. I'd be fine it was 1ghz

If you're dead set on getting a Nexus, you should stick it out and wait for the next round because they're probably going to be awesome (word is 5 different manufacturers are gonna be making them). The SGS3 phone is a great device, but if you're looking at a Nexus then you're obviously wanting something vanilla and the SGS3 is very, very far from vanilla.
depends if you don't want to root then go nexus as that will be better in the update department but if you are rooting the sgs3 is definitely worth picking up now considering its the best smartphone of the summer and there will be a lot of dev support.
"All this knowledge is giving me a major brainer!"
look, the thing which is important is that can you wait with patience or not? if yes, then wait as long as you can to buy a better device than s3. there are no details out yet regarding next nexus, so no one can say how it will be. In this case you better buy s3 and enjoy ur present time.

Why are people dissing my decision to get the Nexus 4 ?

I just picked up my Nexus 4 last week, and really like it. Rooted with Xylon 4.2.2 ROM, and Matrix kernel v7.0, I am averaging around 16 hours or so total battery life, and like 5 hours On Screen time every day, the past three days since on this combo.
I post on a lot of different tech forums, everyone telling me I am crazy for buying the Nexus 4, should have gotten the Note 2 #1 ( Actually which I had, and returned it two weeks later, great phone, amazing battery life, but 5.5" screen, is just too large for my every day phone ) For that same price, I also picked up a Nexus 7 tablet, and the Nexus 4, same price as my Note 2 out of contract full price.
On these other tech forums, said the Galaxy S3 is better, the One X is better, and that the Nexus 4 should be like the 4th option to go with. WTF ?
My smartphone history goes like this; iPhone 1, iPhone 3G, MyTouch 3G, Nexus-One, EVO 4G, Nexus-S 4G, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X, Note 2, Nexus 4.
Out of all those phones, I have to say I felt the most comfortable with my Nexus phones, to quote that classic line "It just works", I prefer the minimalistic design of the Nexus line, not too flashy, or fancy overdone UI's, but a smooth and simple design, that I feel most comfortable with. Sure I know the Nexus 4 is not the most powerful smartphone available today, and maybe not the best screen tech, but I am happy with it, and battery life isn't as bad as the nightmare I read.
Plus once Android 5.0 KLP is released possibly this Summer, the Nexus 4 will get it right away, good luck with your new HTC One, or Galaxy S4 getting 5.0 KLP anytime soon, it will be a very long wait, even custom ROM's for non Nexus phones will have a long wait to get 5.0.
theyre just jealous. plus, everyone always thinks that the device that they have is the best, regardless of the truth. i love my n4, and wouldnt give it up for those other devices.

A few people that did respond, said they are on Verizon, and if the Nexus 4 was available, and had LTE for Verizon, they would get it right away. Personally I hate Verizon, super expensive, but they are the biggest carrier in the U.S., I think the Nexus-Five will have LTE, and Google would be smart to have a CDMA version to work with that carrier, could be a ton more sales.
Rumors point to Google announcing Android 5.0 "Key Lime Pie" at this May's Google I/O show. And possibly a release this June / July. Would Google also release the Nexus-Five then this Summer, the first phone with 5.0 KLP ? Or just give the Nexus 4 Key Lime Pie, and hold off on the Nexus-Five to the typical Nov/Dec release ?

I do. I really like this Nexus 4. Just surprised people look at it like a cheap low end Android device. I think it's easily one of the top phones out there today. Better spec'd than the Galaxy S3, way better than the One X, sure the Note 2 might be better, but that's too large for my tastes. Not sure why so much hate for the Nexus 4, maybe because it's not a Samsung or HTC made Nexus ?
This LG Nexus is much nicer than my old Samsung Nexus, nicer screen, way better build quality, not even mentioning the better hardware, but that's a given with a one year newer device.

Samslut has a huge following. I just went to a T-Mobile store. Every single employee had a Samsung phone.
Every. Single. One.
One of them, I know for a fact, had ordered a Nexus 4 back in December. Hater.
Most people equate price with worth. If something cost more it must be better. If something cost less it must be worse. Look at all apples stuff. Cost an arm and leg for their "premium" junk. Cost more, must be better.

Well, their hardware and build quality is top notch. Mind you, they leave out things for a while like LTE, NFC, etc.
It's just the software... :shudder:
Also, that elitist mentality based on ignorance that seems to come with the device kind of blows.

With the exception of the N4 there really isn't a much better option on T-Mobile than the S3 for high end phones. Everything else there is mid-low range.
I think Samsung's success comes from:
1: They are a household name. They make everything. People can relate.
2: They advertise the crap out of their phones.
Most people aren't tech savvy. When they see non-stop apple and samsung commercials they believe that they are the best things out there. They just don't know any better.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.
That just goes to show you that advertising works. It's OK, all the haters can suck it.
I own a nexus s and I've recommended Samsung to everyone I know for about the last year or so....when I told my friends I wanted the LG Nexus they all looked appalled that I would recommend one manufacturer to everyone, then suddenly choose a device for myself from another. Some people just don't understand that not everyone cares what brand an item is. I picked a Nexus 4 because I wanted to stay with the Nexus family for its open nature and amazing development community. I pick devices for my needs. My needs are not the same as any one of my friends. They all like to buy a phone and keep it unrooted, etc. And that's fine. But I like to mod the living piss out of mine. If I could have remotely unlocked the bootloader while it was on its way to me I would have lol
This is what makes android so great, and it is why iOS will become known as an epic fail. Variety is the spice of life If they keep shoveling crap in front of people and expect them to just choke it down without even considering the fact that they may not like the same thing as the person next to them, they will eventually fail.

Yeah it's all about the advertising.
iOS advertising is condescending. People see the commercials and think they are elite for owning one.
Samsung ads have been more of the attacking/put down variety. People carry the bashing to the real world. Even if it means bashing other Android devices.
Advertising is a powerful tool...especially to the layman.
I had the option to pick whatever phone I wanted and went with the Nexus 4 because I can't stand touchwix and the note is just too big for my taste.
I didn't want an S3 knowing that the S4 is around the corner and not knowing when the S3 was getting future updates.

Couldn't be happier with mine. Just switched from the one s, nobody was making any Roms for the the US one s and got tired of waiting on tmo to release their jellybloat. This is my first nexus phone. Well i take that back the first one had a defect in the screen that looked like a dimple in the pixels.
I'm surprised HTC doesn't have more of a cult following as their phones have some of the nicest build quality among the phones I've used. Samsung phones are nice too but I just can't get over the overly plastic feeling in their designs. I prefer a heavier phone for some reason; something that doesn't feel hollow behind the screen. To each their own at the end of the day... those same haters are gonna be the cry babies in the Samsung forums wishing they had the fast Android updates and Google support we receive with our Nexus devices. Tell them to have fun with their Samsung source code and move along.

HTC has a few things against them
1) They put out phones slowly.
2) Slow software updates. It takes forever to update Sense.
3) Almost no advertising or other aggressive marketing.
4) They just don't have the funds or clout that Samsung has.
I am happy with my LG made Nexus, at the end of the day, I don't care, I mean all these phones are mainly Korean made, and LG is no slouch or small mom and pop shop.
But I will admit, that HTC has been making some really good designs lately, the One X in my opinion was the best looking Android phone of 2012, and the new One phones looks really great. I would love to have HTC back on the next Nexus. But if the Nexus-Five is another LG produced phone, that won't stop me one bit from buying it.
