My brother is traveling in India till the middle of may and his Vibrant 16gb that I unlocked, rooted, and installed CM7 has stopped booting and loops on the CM7 boot screen. had him go into recovery and clear the cache partition, but same thing happens..
so 2 things,
1. do photos by default save on his micro sd (2GB) or on the internal memory (16GB) he has over 1000 photos saved on the phone that he is worried about
losing...
2. if he completely wipes in recovery will he lose his pictures.
thanks! been months since i have had my hands on a vibrant, otherwise i could remember these things lol
Wiping data/factory reset from Recovery will NOT remove anything thats in your sdcard or internal sd.
What i suggest you do
Get into DOWNLOAD MODE, ODIN, stay on eclair and transfer the pictures before something else happens and you actually lose it, go on a flashing spree and flash other ROMS
If you need help getting into downloadmode/ odin etc. Just ask.
Thanks for the info.. he does not have access to a computer, thats why he hasnt been able to backup anything. he has only had cell/internet 2 weeks since january ..
If he still has the cm7 zip on his sdcard he should try reflashing
Yep, if he has any kind of ROM still on his SD, you can erase data/factory reset and then flash the ROM over it and it should be fine. Tell us what the ROM, if any, name is before you do it in case its like a eclair/froyo/gb/ics rom and it may not work directly.

Everything have worked fine until now..
Latest things i did was update firmware on the camera, then rebooted and the camera worked just as fine as before.
I had two framework-res.apk's that i have moded from my own frameworkfile in kitchen, i did try both out and they worked just fine before, i did rename them and hade both in my bluetooth folder on the phone.. one circle and one guage battery framework modfile.
I wanted to go back to the guagefile, so i copied the file (it was renamed framework-res..guage.apk) and pasted it in the framework folder on the phone, renamed it and now it seamed i had two framework-res.apk files... thought one would overwrite the other, but no it didnt. So i checked what file was oldest and deleted that and rebooted, now i cant get by the samsung logo have tried everything and it just wont go any further
Could anyone help me with what to do pleeeeeease ? i can flash with odin, and i have tried flasing kernels unsecure and original with no effect, please help me !! i really hope this phone isnt bricked now
Put phone in download mode or cwm and flash a rom. Use a stock rom made for your phone.
I would prefer not to flash a new rom as there is many things on my phone that i dont want to get wiped away. I have some movies in the camera folder that i havent made a backup for yet and i just cant live without them, if they are lost i could just as well throw away the phone

root it , then buy titanium backup from the market and backup what you want , then flash rom , then install titanium again , then reinstall back up , easy peasy
your phone will have what you want on it still and hopefully be working again
have a good day
flashing a rom shouldnt clear your mass memory mate , your videos etc should remain unless you use the android restore function in settings or format it via pc

sorry didnt read post properley my fault :-(
still flashing a new rom wont delete your mass memory files
it never has on mine , as the other user said , wipe , wipe cache , wipe dalvik cache , if this still doesnt boot then flash a rom of your choice it may bring it back fine and your mass memory should be intact
leomar2.4 / 2.5 / 2.6 / doesnt touch the mass memory files anyways so your videos would be fine and you would have one of the best roms going
No worries
As it is now i can only get into odin mode.. down volume, home button, power button and get connected to the odin flashprogram, that is the only thing i can do
So even if my pictures and movies are on phones internal sd-card it wont be deleted ?? i just need to know this before i do something major like new rom.
I have a external sd-card to and i guess that wont be effected, but i dont know about the internal sd-card
Can i flash a rom without do those wipe cleaning stuff i read about that seams to be important to do before flashing a new rom ?
If it is just the framework-res.apk file thats wrong, cant i flash a new framework file with odin ? if for some reason there was something wrong there.
What rom do you use now? Wiping data wipes everything, wiping cache and dalvik cache shouldn't delete any personal data.
Im running original stock rom with unsecure kernel..

Just flash a stock ROM with Odin.
It won't remove anything, it'll all br there.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Wipe will only wipe /data and /system which will be user and system apps and data.
You wont lose anything on the internal sd card and ext sd card.
You can always flash the same rom as you had before over the top which should fix the framework.
just flash non wipe rom from intratech topic, it will fix it for you
or boot into recovery, do backup there, flash new rom and then restore advenced only data in recovery
and as was mentioned before, reset/wipe/new rom through odin will not touch pictures/movies/music on internal sd card only apps and app setup with data will be erased

Thanks everyone for your help, you are really a great bunch of people here, so fast and very helpful, thank you all so much !
I must admit that my heart stopped for a moment when i couldnt get it restarted, forgot to breath but i did as you said only thing is i didnt flash a stock rom, i flashed a very nice rom called lightning and im much more happy with my phone now then i was before... in the end it was a good thing maybe that this happen to me today, otherwise i would probably never have gone from stock rom, now im glad i did it's faster and everything is better, and i could just now flash a new bootanimation that i couldnt do before, i tried the cool pc bios boot and im very happy with that, overall it feels like a new improved phone
Thanks everyone !!! Have a great eavning !
All you had to do was boot in recovery, and adb a stock frameworkres.apk to the phone and it wouldve booted fine! Or made a flshable zip that copies the stock frameworkres.apk and flash that through clockwork!
...and on the 8th day he created the SGS II!
A coworker of mine installed the OTA update Verizon was pushing down, after rebooting the phone was stuck at the Samsung logo.
We can get the phone into download mode, but recovery errors and none of the buttons respond. (Similar to this thread)
If need be I can take a screenshot or type out the error text he receives trying to go into recovery (stock)
A little more info i can give as is: his phone is stock rom, but I do believe he has it rooted.
I have flashed roms onto my phone (Captivate) so I am familiar with working with Odin, but the problem is that he has data on the phone he needs to recover.
ADB does not recognize the phone, but his computer does seem to detect it.
Does anyone have any advice on getting something to recognize the phone so we can pull data, or is there a rom/setting that would leave his data as is?
If you odin a rom or even flash a rom it doesnt touch any of the data on the SDcard. he will loose call history and sms history. Pictures and things will be left on the sdcard untouched.

Thanks for the heads up.
Just to be clear we are talking about the internal SD card right? Not the removable one.
He is apparently mostly concerned with losing his app data. As long as that will be safe I can have him up and running in a matter of minutes, especially with your link.
NO app data will be gone as well
What rom did he have or was it stock?
when i said the sd card i was referring to the removable one.
I figured that was the case
He is running the stock Froyo rom.
Would it be possible to use Odin (or some other tool) to push CWM onto the phone and maybe get it to mount from there?
He did say Odin recognizes a device when it's plugged in.
You may be past the point of no return. Since the phone is boot-looping and not actually booting up there may be no way to root the phone to flash CWM.
Odin is unfortunately a one-way street. Its designed to flash data ON to the phone, Not pull data off.
the phone does not have to be rooted to odin cwm....that being said, op try odining cwm2.5.1.x red and three finger into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik, then go to my guide section 1, use ccampos powerwashed ed05 froyo. That rom is close enough to what stock froyo is, so it might work! Or you can try geewiz froyo also, but one of those might get the phone back up and running without completely wiping everything.
just fyi once you odin a full rom all app data is gone. I have never attempted to pull app data from the mounting of the internal memory using cwm.

Thats why I suggested to try and flash a close to stock froyo rom in cwm without wiping data. odin will do a full wipe, so thats his only option that I am aware of.
Could he odin a recovery, make a back up, flash a new close to stock rom, advanced restore data? It would probable have alot of issues but may give him the opportunity to make a backup.

my co-worker had something similar happen and this is what I had him do. It didn't fair too well but it was worth a shot.
Ended up using odin to push a stock verizon rom and started over. Then I MADE him put cwm on his device and make a backup immediately incase it were to happen again.
@ mods i realised my mistake in posting this in the wrong section and posted in the right one but people are replying to this one......so please dont delete this just yet
I in my infinite wisdom tried to mod a file on my phone. I did a titanium backup 1st but forgot to move it to my external SD Doh!
So that went wrong and now I'm stuck in a boot loop with only the stock recovery screen. Need to install stock rom and adb not recognized. (Im sure ill figure that) but my main question is, is there some way to recover data from the internal "sd" memory?
I really appreciate any advice anyone can give
I am not sure if I understood your question.. if you have CWM then just access recovery mode and you will have an option to mount the SD and you will be able to access all your files via USB from your PC
?
I don't have cwm . Like I said I only have the stock recovery screens I.e factory reset and download mode.
Do a factory reset, it won't erase your data.
Not sure that would work. It says wipe user data and factory reset so surely it would wipe my data. Plus I don't think that'll work anyway as I changed a file which caused the boot loop so I don't think a factory reset will fix that file.

what info are you trying to get off the device? the sms etc are stored on your data and will be wiped by a reinstall/factory reset
anything on the usb side for storage will not get touched
Factory reset wont clear anything on the internal_sd
thank you.....but
thanks for the replies peeps ill trust your knowledge (and have pressed the thanks button )
got a day off tomorrow so gonna try and get it up and running again,
Question though, being as i buggered up the stock rom wont flashing the new rom (when i figure out how) delete internal data either.
the reason im being carefull is i did some awesome illustrations (imo) for a childrens book im writing so hoping to save those.

it depends on if you use a wipe or non wipe rom, a non wipe wil lkeep qall the data stored on the android system intact but you might get bootloops if it doesnt replace the file you say you deleted
took the plunge......alls good

Thanks Richy99, i took the plunge and followed nasgilani's guide to installing stock rom, i was supprised when it completed that even my home screens etc were as they were before (appart from widgets being blank) and glad to see "as you all said" my data intact.
i shall be more cautious before i start messing with mods next time
basically internal usb storage of 11gb will never be touched when you factory reset nor wil lanything on an external sd card
the only thing that gets wiped is the 1gb internal space for the rom and data on that partition such as sms/email etc
I know this is an old topic but I noticed it wasn't exactly answered.. I'm trying to send mine back to the factory for warranty because the power button no longer functions. I have the stock rom and recovery and I'm stuck in boot loop because I can't execute factory wipe with the power button. I'd like to pull my data off of the internal SD but am unable to fix the bootloop without forcing the wipe.
I know metter is over now, it was just ur worrying, otherwise wiping cache, wiping data from recovery , flashing stock rom (wipe/non wipe) nothing.will erase data on internal memory.
Just for knowledge
aroma file manager is available, which works from recovery, it can work even you device stucked, unable to boot..
Edit ; sometime you feel ashamed, just come to know this is 6month old topic

Ok, I looked in some of the threads already posted, but didn't really see the problem that I am having.
My A500 gets stuck in boot loop. I can access the recovery and wipe data, flash etc... however, none of that is working. After I have wiped EVERYTHING and reflashed the Thor ROM 14.2 I get stuck in boot loop again with the little blue android with the spinning gears... That's it. I'm spent, I have no idea what I should do next. I only paid $260 for this bad boy, so I'm not sending it to ACER to charge me money to fix it... Any ideas?
Have you tried to format your sd card and place a fresh download of the rom you wish to flash on the sd and tried again.. It sounds like there is something corrupt.
This would my first thing to try from what i understand about your Question . If you try the above and still have issues. post back all the details that caused you to end up in this situation. from rom version you were on at first and recovery your using as well as details on how you flashed.
Good Luck.
I'll try that, but skeptical about it. Since I last posted, I have tried a nandroid restore, flashing a different rom, a couple more complete data wipe/factory data resets, no luck on that. I am formatting the SD card now, in hopes I can get a good clean flash?
Edit: I just realized all the wipedata/factory rests I've been doing haven't worked as they never complete. They say 'error formatting...' and before I can read what all it says it cannot format, it disappears. I guess at first I just thought it was wiping really fast...
edit: formatting the sd card, did not work. im still stuck in bootloop.
Edit: I think I found my solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23246074#post23246074
so far it seems to be working...
So that link got you up and running? I'm always afraid of the boot loop and like to prepare for the worst

Re
Do you get an error message when you try to wipe data factory reset? If you do then your data partition is corrupt, happened to me yesterday. the way you fix this is go into recovery>backup/restore> toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media) so it says enabled>mounts and storage>format data. Then you should be good to go. This REALLY formats the data partition so EVERYTHING will be deleted on it.
first, sorry for my bad english. I've been able to light up my acer a500 but I got stuck in airplane mode on email section.any one can help me?
it fixed mine

Got a question here on installing CROMi 4.2.1, love the ROM when I get it working, my problem is, whenever a new version is out and I try to install I run into all kinds of issues. I'll try to outline the exact problems I'm having here. It goes something like this, I will download new ROM, throw it onto SD card, then boot into recovery and attempt to install. Now if I try to install without clearing any caches/data etc. it will say it installs, but then it won't boot into the ROM at all, just sticks at ASUS screen. So I go through and clear everything, internal, system, dalvik cache etc. Then I try to install again, usually it will fail at least 5-6 times, sometimes it just won't do it at all, so I'll reboot, go into recovery again and try it, still no go. Then I'll use a different SD card, still won't work right, then I'll clear everything again and go for another try and after 3 or 4 or more failed times it will finally install and boot. So I'm curious if there's just something obvious and dumb that I'm missing here, or if it's just a normal issue with this and something that will always be there? It just doesn't make sense to me that it would fail so many times and just work for no apparent reason? Any pointers would be much appreciated!
I assume your using twrp 2.4.4.0-4.2 as your installing CROMi for 4.2.1 and on the 4.2.1 bootloader (10.6.1.8)?
If so not sure this is the issue but I have had & read of other's having issues with some micro sd cards using twrp 2.4.4.0-4.2
You could try in twrp doing a full wipe (cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, system, internal storage) then in twrp file manager copy the CROMi rom zip from your micro sd to your internal storage and install the rom from there and see if that works without issue.

Yep those are the versions I'm working with! Didn't realize there were sd card issues, thanks for the info. One last question, where should I copy the ROM to on the internal storage? Don't want to accidentally copy to a place that's gonna get wiped during install.
Sounds like you have something corrupted.
I'd do a full wipe of internal storage (making sure you have all your backups on external storage), flash the rom and see if that helps.
Also if your ext card is causing issues try booting without it in after the first flash.....

The famous sbdags himself responds! Just wanted to take the opportunity to tell you that your ROM is incredible, puts the Transformer on par with, or better than the iPad. Installed RC2 this morning and it is running great! Thanks for all the great work. When I was having those install issues I would do a full wipe of internal, system, and all caches, but installs would still fail extremely often. The strange thing is, that after a few wipes, and numerous times trying to install, it would finally work and boot and everything would work fine. I'm thinking it has something to do with how the SD card interacts with the recovery system but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. All that I know is that I downloaded on my tab this morning, and ran the install from the internal storage, and bam, flawless install the first time around. So I'm going to give some kudos to pjc21 because I think it was just an issue with the SD card interfacing with recovery.
