Thanks smirkis, kinfauns, and pokey9000! - Kindle Fire General

I guess this really belongs in the developers forum but I can't post there yet cuz < 10.
I wanted to thank smirkis for his easy to use script which can currently do the following:
1. install blue cwmtouch
2. install doomlords cwmtouch final
3. install kinfauns recompiled fff1.3
4. install original fff1.2
5. install red cwmtouch
6. install-stock-recovery
7. install-stock-bootloader
8. install-twrp
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935
As a rooting noob, I was easily able to switch from twrp to cwmtouch and install kinfauns fff 1.3 (Thanks to kinfauns and pokey9000 for that)
Works awesome and is simple to use. Thanks!!!
Also going to try smirkis new ROM found on the ROM index thread!

no problem, glad it worked and was easy for ya!

How to Flash Clockworkmod Recovery 3.0 easily from your phone

I found a really easy way to flash the new recovery. My fastboot didnt seem to have an option for a terminal so I thought of this genius yet n00b way. Here are the steps.
Steps:
1. Install clockworkmod from market.
2. Flash Clockworkmod recovery from Rom Manager.
3. Navigate to clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries (or where ever your recovery was downloaded to. This can be done in File Manager, Astro, or Androzip.
4. Mine was "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img". Rename it to "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-visionXXX.img" or something obviously different.
5. Download clockworkmod 3.0 from hereish:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893933
6. Move your recovery.img to clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries and name it recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img
7. Go into ROM Manager and Flash Clockworkmod recovery, it will say its still 2.5.1.3 when your done. Reboot into recovery and you'll be welcomed by a new orange 3.0
More than likely i could have done it much easier but it just kinda clicked and i didn't wanna bother with fastboot as it feels clunky on the G2.
there's nothing noob about it. that is a bonafide hack. nice!
I tried something like that but I didnt rename it correctly. So nice to know though. Good work.

How is that a hack? LOL
not really a "hack" per se but it tricks ROM manager into flashing a newer clockwork while still thinking it is the same old one. i thought about doing this the other day but never got around to it so great job on this

Nicely done, flashed it via your method.
You may want to correct the typo you have in there as I first tried to copy and paste your file names. It's clockwork, not cockwork.

For some reason flashing recovery from fastboot hangs everytime on my phone. This way is good but I did it in terminal. I actually had to flash a cyanogen rom to get the fastboot command, this method would have saved that step.

fastboot is a lot easier than this IMHO !
You will have fastboot if you have got adb setup on your PC. See the adb guide in this forum for how to setup adb (and fastboot too). It's worth going to the effort, because fastboot will help you with various things in the future. Also you will need the eng hboot.
thank you so much! man now this i can do. i was trying to adb or find terminal in my fastboot.
I'm just starting to install custom ROM tho my DZ, but is this means that ROM Manager will never integrate the new Clockworkmod Recovery?

now cmon stevie, i agree its good to have adb and proper sdk w\ drivers installed. But for the super ober noob thats wants shiny pretty new cw3 for whatever reason be it cm7 or just because, even trying to teach the super ober how to cmd and cd to the sdk is a larger challenge than this. Im just saying your a well respected source of info on xda to a lot of super obers and to say this is easier on the big picture, well thats just crazy talk. This is pretty easy for just about anyone.

CWM 5.0.1.0?

Hi folks,
Today I booted up Rom Manager and it told me that a new version of CWM was available : 5.0.1.0 So I flashed it (through Rom Manager, so the temporary one) and noticed that it is cyan instead of orange. I didn't pay attention to new features. Is there a official version for permanent flash? Is this a official CWM?
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Yes its official, and yes, there is an IMG file for a permanent flash.
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/
ROM Manager and Clockworkmod are written by the same person, so, if ROM Manager says there's an update, it will be an official one.
PS - Questions shouldn't be in Dev Section.
It works but this isn't permanent flash?
after recovery reboot i get back to v.3.x.x.x
Ups... I didn't download *.img. now it's working
Can someone talk me through how do I go about making this permanent? I've downloaded through Rom Manager and if I boot into recovery via rom manager I get the new version but if I reboot into recovery I still have the old one.
I've read about a couple of methods of doing this, I believe it's possible using either Unrevoked or Terminal Emulator? I'm having trouble working out which method is easier/more reliable.
I'm S-On if this makes any difference?
Thanks!

Both work. Unrevoked method is definitely more easier, but, if you don't mind typing in a bunch of commands, then the terminal emulator method is probably more reliable.
EDIT - I think the Terminal method needs S-OFF, so I guess you are stuck with Unrevoked, in all probability.
Download the image. Open up a terminal and type su, you should get a # sign. Move the image to the root of your SD. In your terminal type flash_image recovery SD/(name of image). Hit return and watch the terminal flash the latest version. Personally I'd use Amon-Ra, but that's just me.

When you open the UnrEVOked tool, you can somewhere select a custom recovery image (I can't tell you exacly, but if I remember right, there weren't that much menu options in unrEVOked). You can then proceed with the normal procedure: the UnrEVOked tool will do its magic to install your new recovery image.
You can download the .img from the link from 3xeno, or you can find it somewhere on your sdcard as ROM Manager has already downloaded it.
To be honest: your life willnbe much mor easy when you use the AlpheRevX/Revolutionary tool to get S-OFF. The commands to flash a new recovery aren't that difficult, and other fastboot commands can be very usefull when you did something very stupid, want to restore a nandroid backup and notice that clockworkmod doesn't want to cooperate anymore. It really saved my phone more then once And, last but not least, when S-OFF you can remount your system folder as read/write (im stead of read-only) to change certain system files (for example, deinstall a useless system app) in a descent graphical interface and when your phone is booted.
Good luck!
Erwin
Unrevoked doesn't seem to want to play ball for me at the moment, keep getting "Is your firmware too new?" error messages. I'll S-Off, it's something I've been meaning to do anyway just never got round to! Thanks for your help.
Use an older version of Unrevoked, something between 3.14 and 3.21. All newer versions give this error for some or the other reason. (Assuming you are not going to S-OFF yet)
Ahh yes 3.14 did the trick! Thanks.
It is an official update, CWM won't install something that isn't official.
Use fast boot flash. From windows or linux.

[Guide]Install AOKPlay

Hey! Here is another guide of mine. In this guide I will show you how to install AOKPlay by Supervenom, my current ROM of choice. It is found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582118
This won't cover the unlocking of the bootloader or the installation of the fastboot files.
I recommend reading the whole thread before starting.
Good luck!
1. Make sure you have all the drivers installed, made a nandroid backup and have an usb cable, usb port and your phone near you. Also make sure your phone has enough battery left. About 50% should be plenty.
2. Download the rom+kernel from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582118
3. Download the ROM and put it on your phones memory card.
3.5 (optional, but highly recommended: download the Gapps (Google apps), this is Google Play et cetera.)
4. Download the kernel (either Doomlords or Keirans) and put it in the folder your fastboot.exe is in. For me this is C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools.
If you download Doom's kernel, make sure to download the fix aswell and put it on your sd card.
5. Now grab your phone. Make sure it is turned off. Hold the search key while connecting it to your computer. The notification light should light up blue. When you have succesfully connected it (light is blue), you can release the search key.
5.5 Read steps 6-8 carefully. I have made a .bat file that will do this for you. If you choose to use it, place it in the same folder as your boot.img, and then launch. This won't work if you have renamed the dfk4.img. If you don't trust this, you can right-click it and hit edit. This way you'll see it says exactly the same as steps 7 and 8. Feel free to do it manually though.
http://www.2shared.com/file/PizbMctP/Flash_kernel.html for Keiran's kernel
http://www.2shared.com/file/8odggnur/Flash_kernel_Doom.html for Doom's kernel
6. I assume you have Windows Vista or 7. If you do, shift-click on a empty place in your fastboot folder and click "open command prompt here" or something similar (my Windows version is Dutch, so I don't know what it's called in English).
7. Flash the kernel using this command: fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img
8. Reboot the phone using this command: fastboot -i 0xfce reboot
9. While it is rebooting, spam the back key. You will now get into CWM recovery. Use the volume keys to navigate, and the home key to select. If you have Doom's kernel, you can use the touchscreen (I believe). Make a backup.
10. Press "wipe data/factory reset". Then, wipe the cache+dalvik cache (under advanced).
11. Select "install zip from sdcard", and then "choose zip from sdcard". Find the zip from step 3 and select it. (if you installed Doom's kernel, also select the fix)
12. (optional) Also install Gapps the same way as the ROM itself.
13. Press reboot system now, and enjoy your new ROM. The first boot may take a while.
Congratulations, you just installed AOKPlay!
If I made any mistakes, please let me know.
I am not responsible for any bricked phones, broken GPU's, force-closes and killed pets.
If this helped you, I would appreciate a "thanks".
Good luck!

I do not know the solution for the first problem myself. Maybe this thread will help you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678215
But it is probably the bootloader, which needs to be unlocked. You can only install custom kernels with an unlocked bootloader, but there are some roms that work with the stock kernel, like Gin2ICS (I believe)
You can't install kernels through clockworkmod. I think this is because the recovery partition is inside the kernel.

Both are roughly the same but ics one only works on ics beta based roms. CM9 kernel, can be used on any cm9 based ROMS. So depending on the ROM u use then use either the cm9 or the ICS one.
Edit- and if ur switching ROM then ye u will need to wipe data, cache & dalvik cache.

Easy hboot S-on recovery/img install or change up.

I haven't seen any post about fastboot flashing recovery,on an s-on Evo using fastboot . Since this is a guaranteed way to flash a recovery. I thought I'd share the process. Your phone must be in fastboot for this to work.
1. Install this folder in C: .... https://www.dropbox.com/s/pr4qllkvwo74vzk/e4grec.zip
2. Go to cmd and type. CD/e4grec .... you will see this..C:\e4grec>
3. Then enter this....fastboot flash recovery recovery-ra-supersonic-4.3-smelkus-mason.img
4.And your done, this same ,method can be used to flash any img file.
Don't worry if you not using the recovery I used as info all you have to do is change the name portion only (IE) (recovery-ra-supersonic-4.3-smelkus-mason)
The fastboot command and recoveries are already inside this folder as fastbootflashcmdReadme.txt.
You must use the entire folder do not remove anything but recovery img's. You can also place any img in this folder to fastboot flash.
I'm recommend that you use smelkus new recoveries as that are the shi#.smelkus ra recoveries can be found here..... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661543
Mac and Linux adb and fastboot drivers now included.
Where you've typed fast boot in your instructions, it's 2 words. Shouldn't it be one word ? Fastboot?
And don't people already need to have the sdk installed to use this?
I ask cuz I finally figured out how to install sdk recently (big tip I never knew, gotta have Java installed d'oh) and have been playing a bit and trying to get familiar with fastboot and adb.
Thanks for your efforts

Yeah that's pretty funny I didn't even notice it was spacing it. This works without use of sdk. Its way easier to place a folder in C: and use cmd. This way anyone can make it work. Everything you need is in one folder. Evo drivers, fastboot and adb are inside with a few other need to haves so when you call the folder from cmd it will automatically initiate the right program for you. If you can't get it to work you can just install drivers, fastboot, adb right from the folder and it will work.

Paranoid Android User

So I'm new to rooting and custom roms in general and excuse my language but kind of a *****. I have the files to root my G2 and it shows up on adb devices. I'm only doing this because my battery life is really subpar and I'm hoping a root and custom rom will help me with this.
Now once I was rooted I was thinking of installing Malladus. I am having a little trouble figuring out the safest way to do this. I was told to root then download and flash a custom recovery using GooManager. How exactly do I do this?
Once that is done the instructions say:
Instructions
1. wipe data (if coming from ANY other rom)
2. wipe cache
3. flash ROM
4. flash LG Apps
5. flash GApps
6. let phone sit for a few minutes once booted to settle (a lot is done on first boot)
Now what exactly does the first instruction mean? Should I wipe my data if coming from a stock LG that is just rooted? After that I just select the option "wipe cache" on GooManager and make sure those downloads are in that order and hit flash no?
Thank you in advance. I have searched the forums but haven't found the exact answers I was looking for.

I'm still a little confused. I did some research on TWRP but still don't know exactly what it is. Also to install it I put it on the (by the directions)
Download the above file and place it in /sdcard on your device. Using adb shell or terminal emulator:

dd if=/sdcard/recoveryfilename.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
Make certain that you get this command right. Typing the wrong number could result in a brick!

What exactly is that doing? Also were is the /sdcard on our device? Thirdly... lol what do they mean by typing the wrong number?
Thank you for your response. Sorry for being new to this.
First that thread should take you to a root method once rooted we can install twrp which allows you to make backups of your current ROM. And more importantly try out new ROMs on your system. It's like saying once I'm tired of Windows XP I can flash/install 7. If I don't like it I can restore the old backup. Except in this case it's versions of android or modified android os that allows for new and exciting options. Root allows you to modify your cutrent ROM choice further. You can install fonts, themes, control battery draining applications, hide your nav buttons for more screen when you don't use them. If you are not in the know I suggest you do lots of research. In some cases we will be able to use applications we normally couldn't even applications from other phones once they are ported. ...essentially it's your ticket to be able to do the magical things the normal consumer says" " I wish my phone could do that" but except they can't because they don't have root or a custom recovery to make it happen. Step one is baby steps because brick is a nasty word you don't want to mutter.
Get rooted. Install a program called adb and install the LG drivers for your phone. There are step by step guides on how to do this and you might need to follow them into other links for guides to get from a to b. Once adb can see the phone. ..warning this is command line. Then you can download twrp IN SOME CASES YOU NEED TO ONLY DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL FILES BUILT FOR Your PHONES MODEL/Carrier and push it to the phone. Install it with ADB. Once you're there your fairly safe. Now your boot into recovery and make a backup reboot your phone and at least go visit a stock ROM thread for your model phone. There should be a development thread for each carrier.

I already am rooted. That part was easy. It was basically run adb devices, make sure device was there, run root.bat, follow instructions, and boom. The flashing a recovery and flashing a custom rom is what really confuses me. I have done research but have not found a step by step guide (that I understand well enough) yet on how to install whatever I need to do this.
What carrier you have?

This thread really breaks it down. I think you should download the Verizon twrp. In the original android development thread post 3 first. Then follow the guide posted after the root video in the link above. Its the guide I followed. If you have working adb you got the hard part done bro ?

Again this is my paranoid self speaking. It says I want adb working. If I was able to open the command window within my root folder on my desktop and run "adb devices" and see my LG then I have adb working? If so how is that the hard part, all you have to do is download and install the drivers for the phone to get that to work.
I plan on making my own step by step guide on rooting and flashing a custom recovery after this (with pictures) for people like me.
After that the commands to run the twrp install ate not that much more complicated

1st link there really couldn't be a better resource.
Download Verizon twrp. Open adb folder. Find the adb in sdk or bin run as administrator. Copy and paste the commands. You should put twrp in the same folder adb cmd prompt is ran from after downloaded. That's it. I'd use option 2. Afterward you'll,learn you can download goomanager from market and do it with 1 click. ..

Sorry about that haha.
I have read through the instructions multiple times.
and I quote
Click download zip on the right. and go into the bin folder of the zip. push loki flash and the img like so:
adb push loki_flash /data/local/tmp/loki_flash
adb push openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.2-g2vzw.img /data/local/tmp/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.2-g2vzw.img
adb shell
(IF YOU DONT SEE A # prompt, type su to get it.)
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 777 loki_flash
./loki_flash recovery /data/local/tmp/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.2-g2vzw.img
exit
adb reboot recovery

Where exactly do I put these files? Inside the folder that has the root.bat file I used to originally root my device? Also once I execute these commands what is going to happen?
