Sorry for the noob question, but what exactly is "Cell Standby"?
So far today, i've used 50% of my battery, of which 37% was consumed by my display which is fine, but 17% was consumed by Cell Standby!
When i go into check, it says i have been without signal for 100% of the time, which cant be right as i have an "H" and 3 bars of signal at my desk for most of the day, and besides i've been using the internet so it knows i have signal.
I've also switched off WiFi and Bluetooth.
I did an autoupdate of the firmware yesterday, i wonder if thats causing it
Doh should have used the search better.

looks like i have to manually go to settings and about and status to get this to correct itself.
seems stupid?

Yes thats a work around on the bug, I dont know why thats never been fixed.
any idea if its just a visible thing, or does it actually affect battery life?

About Phone --> Battery --> Battery use. Anyone ever see that? Kinda neat and interesting. I only have cell standby, phone idle and display. Not sure if it shows anything else.
Cell Standby: 45%
Phone Idle: 30%
Display: 25%
Maybe could help in somehow identifying battery hogging apps or resources, etc?
If you are trying to identify a battery draining program Spare Parts (Market) has additional battery tools.

Unless you're in an area where you cell reception is awful, that 45% cell standby is a bug. Do a search for 'Cell Standby' and you'll find several fixes.

Yes... if you click on cell standby(or is it beneath it grayed out?) then you will see Time Without Signal. That is what you want to avoid.
Mine says Cell Standby 46%. Time on 1h 42m 28s. Time without signal 0%.
This is a problem?
Whoops. My bad. I read it wrong. That's what I get for posting from work when I'm busy.

No you are fine.. The "time without signal" was the way to tell if your phone was working right. It was a bug when 2.1 leak first came out. It was defaulting to the wrong network, gsm. Not cdma (what our phone is suppose to use). So there was a way of fixing it every time you booted up your phone.
This is not a problem in current roms, and is usually fixed right away if it is a problem when released.
I recently installed Froyo (I know, about three weeks late). One of my hopes was that it would improve my battery life (~8 hours previously) but I found the opposite. After installing Froyo I was getting about 4 hours of battery. Horrible.
So I factory reset and started installing apps one or two each day, paying close attention to see if I could find what the problem was. A stock rom would be just fine with nothing installed - lasting all day and ending the day with 40% battery with normal usage.
I discovered that my battery started sucking when I activated Latitude. With further testing I found that Latitude did not suck my battery with the GPS off, and if I left the GPS on but Latitude deactivated I also did not have any major problems with battery.
By deactivating GPS and leaving latitude on I went from a 45% drop over two hours to a 6% drop over two hours.

Not bad! I don't want to give up hardware and I don't want to give up Latitude, so I purchased Tasker and set up the following profiles:
App - Earth: GPS ON
App - Maps: GPS ON
App - Wireless Tether: 4G ON
App - Internet: 4G ON
Battery Level below 35%: 4G OFF
Battery Level below 15: Brightness to minimum, 4G OFF, WiFI OFF, Auto-Sync OFF
I set up additional profiles to turn on WiFi when I'm at work or at home, and one that writes my battery level to a text file along with status of the hardware devices every time the battery percentage changes (for further tracking).
I now have not had to give up my GPS being on, WiFi working, auto-sync, or even 4G to keep great battery life. True that 4G takes a minute to turn on, GPS might take a few extra seconds to get a fix, but it's worth it. I've been unplugged for 6 hours now and I'm sitting at 83% so I should be able to get well over a day with this setup.
I'm interested in hearing if others having major problems are running latitude with GPS ON and if this setup solves the problem. Also, if you have ideas for additional power saving Tasker profiles.
I gotta say I am really must be missunderstanding whats going on here lol.
So without this tasker your phone would die in 4 hours because all that stuff was turned on and working hard? However with the tasker your phone at 6 hours is only at 85%? This is where I am confused, if you dont already see the problem with the math here. If the tasker is only killing things at 35% and thus everything is running how it was before until you get to 35% then shouldnt your phone be down to 35% by say 3.5hours and then suddenly your tasker takes over lol. I mean everything is running exactly the same from 100%-35% as it was without the tasker so why the heck isnt it killing the phone just as fast? Well why isnt it killing the phone down to 35% just ask fast is the better question?
I dont think the tasker solved your problem I think you inadvertantly solved your own problem. Or I am wrong and I am missing something. Maybe I didnt read your post correctly.
This is a great development. I too noticed that my battery would drain quickly when GPS was on, and I never once thought about Latitude (of which is enabled at all times on my phone)
Lattitude confuses me. You are essentially allowing anyone to track you, and doing it willingly? Am I missing something?

It's used to update your location to your friends - only those you explicitly approve.
I was underwhelmed with Latitude. It reports my position okay on my phone (great, I know where I am) but if my wife is right next to me on the couch, Latitude says she's a mile away in the middle of a park. What's the point? I can get general locations from Facebook updates?
And, yeah, it's also kicking GPS on all the time and draining battery. I have filed Latitude under the "gimmick" heading for now.

Ah sorry - that could be a little more clear. Each line is a separate profile, so I leave GPS off by default now and have it automatically turn on when I enter Google Earth or Google Maps. Since GPS was the main problem, this has completely fixed my battery issue while still allowing me to use Latitude.
The other stuff, like the extreme low battery settings, are just icing on the cake for battery savings.

Maybe the person you think is your wife is actually an evil doppelganger. Better knock her out and head to the park to save your real wife.
I actually like Latitude a lot. I have a bunch of my friends on there and it's always interesting to see what they are doing or be alerted when they are nearby. The cool thing is that the alerts "learn" when you would normally be by that person and only alert you if you are nearby at an unusual time or location. It's also great if someone is on their way to meet you, you can pop in and see where they are and how soon they will be there without calling or texting them (this is the most useful thing I do with it).
Has it significantly improved my life? Not really. Is it still fun? I open it up 3 or 4 times a week, so it must be.

Help!
I'm running the 81xx firmware on a direct-from-dell unlocked Streak.
My battery life has so far been abysmal, and looking at the battery usage screen, my cell standby is usually over 60% while idle is less than 20%, everything else like 2%. This isn't from weak signal, though; I am in a well-covered 3g-only area and my phone has reported only being disconnected about 4% of the time.
Another strange thing is, my data indicator is constantly switching between the H symbol and the 3g symbol.
Anybody know what's going on?
It might be that while you are well covered for 3g, you are marginal for HSDPA and that constant switching back and forth is using your battery. I have not tried it but have a look and see if you can disable HSDPA in settings somewhere and see if that helps.
i'm usually around 40% cell standby.. do u have any task killer apps installed? although people think those are useful they usually do more harm then good.
I have the same problem, and I used another Android phone in the same location (hence same cell coverage) with no such problems. I just took my phone off the charger and had the display on since then non-stop. Cell standby used as much battery as the display!! There's no way that is appropriate.
I'm running build 8102, but it was the same with 6941 before. Can't tell about 1.6 as I bought my streak used with 6941 on it.
What Android version are you guys running? Maybe we can find common denominators.. :/
Edit: here's a screen shot of the battery usage after a while off the charger with the screen on constantly:
http://i.imgur.com/3OrqZ.png
You must be Australian W0nk0
Do you think your antenna might be loose or defective?
I can't imagine the antenna to be loose really - but who knows, I bought mine used. If so, I think there is a signal strength value in " about phone" somewhere, no?
What signal strength are others getting? I'll post mine later, I'm on airplane mode right now so that I get some battery life.. :/
For signal strength, I am getting -75 to -95, and 9 to 12 for the two values while riding the train (not subway).
It also appears my battery life is quite good when my phone is in standby and not doing anything... the problem seems to come from net browsing or anything else that uses an active connection... Just browsng XDA is taking about 2% a minute!
Oh and my android is the 81xx 2.1 version with the modaco tweaks
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I had really high cell stand-by too. then i installed juicedefender, now my cell standby is down to about 29%.
I think the main thing is that it disables data connections while your screen is off and only turns it back on when the screen is on and unlocked. It also has a setting where it enables data connection periodically to allow background syncs and whatnot.
I'd recommend you guys give it a go, it had almost doubled my battery life!!
Mine shows,
cell stand by 50%
phone idle 44%
it seems quite common on the streak as I read in all the forums. I am on 2.1 stock rom? what's 1.6 like?
Hey, I am trying to figure out why my battery drain is so high. Part of it is the display (trying to work on that too) but I see that my "phone signal" is quite bad. I have a feeling that this is draining my battery.
I have attached my battery stats. Do they look normal. And does the phone signal look normal or below normal. I think it is worth noting that I almost always have 4 bars of signal so I am not sure whats going on. I use my phone in Canada on the fido/rogers network (i believe it is the same as At&t in the states). Is there another radio I can flash or something if this is not normal (which will still work with my phone/network)?
Thanks a lot
Reports are that using 3G a lot drains the battery immensly.
Try switching to use 2G only and see how that affects your battery life.

I dont think it is worth it to pay $30 a month to use 2g networks. I will try to turn off the 3g radio when on wifi though. And maybe only turn on 3g when i need it. As for the phone signal bar. Is it the same or worse than what you guys are getting?

It already works this way. Wifi is going to be your best bet to lessen drain if available (both in standby and when using data - just make sure you have the sleep policy set to never).
If you have poor signal you are going to murder your battery - no way around it. The radio will boost power (Gain is adjusted automatically) in an attempt to get a better signal - and constantly search for a better one. So if you are bouncing between no service and 1 bar or even with just a weak 1 bar signal you are going to see atrocious battery life. There's not much you can do there except potentially switch to SIP in those times if you use a SIP provider.
If you are sitting with 4 bars then you should be seeing decidedly better battery life. What is the actual time the display was on in that screenshot?
I use 3G and its fine. What radio are you using?
the choices are: JK8, KB1, KB3, KD1
you can find them on the dev forums

I agree. you're a pretty heavy user So far different radio doesn't drain battery, but only the difference of data connection speed cap.

Yes I do love android (been tinkering around since the g1). I do realize that I am a heavier user than the average person but it might also be that I recently got this phone so I am using it more.
Aside from that, does everything else seem normal?
"Android System" should not be taking such a high %. It should be about 1-2%.
There is (was?) a bug that causes high cpu usage (and shows as Android System) when wifi is on, but not connected to a network.
Another thing I can think of and is something I've experienced, is that sometimes you get an IP address from the mobile network that has a lot of noise, that is, it's an address someone has likely used p2p programs with and there are lots of connection retries. You can see it because the green arrows don't stay dark for more than a couple of seconds, and it kills your battery quite fast. Reconnecting to get a different IP address is the only solution...
Also, bluetooth may be a factor...

Blutooth is always off unless I need to use it (which is rare). I am not sure how to make my mobile network connect to a different IP adresse, would turning it on and off do the trick?
Being in area where there is low/no signal also causes my battery drain to increase by a lot! Which sucks cos where i live i get either 1 or no bars of signal.
I keep seeing a huge battery drain from "cell standby" and "bluetooth".
I have wi-fi on all the time, I use bluetooth only when driving (no streaming), and I tried Greenify with no improvement.
Are there any known bugs with this? I am running 6.0.1 on T-Mobile.

I rarely use bluetooth but I do have high cell standby like yours. I also have no idea why since it happened to other androids out there even on nexuses and it seems started since lollipop. my guess is, it happened in previous android versions but not displayed until lollipop. I don't care much about it now since I'm getting around 6 hours of SOT within 2 days of usage which is great, at least for me.
I get about 2.5 hrs SOT and have to top up in the evenings pretty often. For a 48-hour rated phone, I feel like something's not right.
What kind of bike is that?

Judging from your screenshot, it looks like the phone was struggling with cell signal strength. This is one of the main battery drainer other than gps and playing games. When the signal strength is low, the phone increases the radio power to get better reception, thus draining battery faster.
it's a suzuki gsx650f
Same issue with mine as well, battery drains like hell from this bug but tower is always full. I use vodafone.
This did happen to me in the last one week. I got only 3.5 hrs screen on time, however my phone went three days without charge (I didn't use it much anyway, was busy with work). Checked BetterBatteryStats on my phone and it showed the poor mobile signal to be one of the major battery drainers. It's weird because until 10 days back I never had this poor mobile signal reception.
3.5 hours SOT within 3 days is considered great already. Some phones barely last a day with that amount of SOT.
i've also had this problem since i bought this phone. My mobile standby is always over 10-15% when the signal is always full and there is never a single bar drop. I've tried switching to 2g/3g/4g but problem persists every time. I've also tried many custom roms but this problem remains. I think this has to do something with hardware of this phone. I cant even get it replaced or repaired at service centre since i've rooted and unlocked boot loader. If anybody finds a solution please post. It will be much appreciated.
I also had this problem initially. To get rid of this problem put your phone in airplane mode for few minutes, then turn your mobile network on.For the bluetooth issue,go to settings - location - three dots top right - scanning - uncheck WiFi and Bluetooth.

thanks a lot man. this actually solved the problem, I would have never though the solution was so easy, although I have to repeat the procedure with every reboot but its still better than nothing. I do hope devs come up with a permanent solution to this issue.
