Archangel one-click-root from the Archaism Team
This will give you temporary or permanent root on your Archos 101 - firmware 2.0.71
Archos are kind enough to provide a SDE firmware which can allow root access,
but involves some significant changes to the system and they say that they will
invalidate your warranty if you install it. This is a bit frightening for new owners.
Archangel solves this with a painless one-click-root which you can uninstall at any time.
It does not use the SDE developer firmware.
This was specifically designed for the Archos 101 with firmware 2.0.71 - it may work on
other Archos devices or firmwares, but has not been tested and is not recommended for them.
If you find this application useful, please donate to those great forums who have given
the android root community so much. Encourage them to keep up their great work. We are
fans of C-Skills Blog, XDA Developers and Modaco Forum.
When installed, this app will use approx 10mb of storage space. Don't run it if you don't
have that much spare.
Usage Instructions:
1) Make sure you have 10mb of space available on the internal storage
2) Make sure you are connected on Wifi
3) Run the Archangel app
4) Click to install SuperUser application
5) Click to get root!
6) Check everything is working correctly, try an app which needs root
7) Once you have root you can tick the "Permanent" root option to always have root.
8) Party Hard!
To turn off root, either just reboot, or turn off permanent root and reboot if you had
enabled it.
To uninstall, just uninstall like any other app. You may also want to use the menu item
to clean up before you uninstall.
You can create a script in /sdcard/sdcard/extraroot.sh and this will be executed as root
whenver you reboot, so you can use this to do any additional root functions you want.

I think this is a scam "Permanent" root is not possible because the filesystem is a read-only filesystem. But I can be wrong.
I'll download this and try to inspect it.

I hope this works, I really want to get Titanium Backup working.

Well I haven't tried yet, but did a quick analysis on the APK:
Permissions on the APK does not seem to be too fishy:
Storage: modify/delete SD card contents
System tools: view and change WIFI state
and automatically start at boot
APK contains superuser, su and ls binaries.

It Works

I did install it and it seems to be working. I was able to go su from the terminal and backup an app with Titanium Backup.
I can also confirm that if permanent root is checked this will still work after reboot. When I was looking at the app it looked like it plugged into the launcher process. So perhaps it is just starting just after android is loaded.
Although I have not verified, I suspect that /system is still read only because of squashfs.

What bothers me is first the dates within the apk are 29/2/2008 for all files.
Then the binaries su is a gzipped binary superuser is a gzipped superuser.apk BUT ls is not compressed.
Why do they need ls the ls of the ROM should work fine. I suspect a trojan but i'm not sure. I could be paranoid but a rar with passwords come on......

So xdaAlan your first post and you claim it works and what proof you can give us? screenshots maybe.....

I agree with extreme caution on files coming from the "wild" (my apologies to archaism1).
Permissions on the APK seems to be reasonably OK.
Like wdl1908 I was also puzzled about the files dates and the presence of ls binary.
Well, I'll run this Archangel beast on a resetted tablet and report here the results with proofs

The ls binary is definitely fishy I reexamined the rar file and the file dates for the readme.txt and the apk are 18/8/2009 whats up with that.......

Thxs jsperri I don't have a spare unit and don't really want to reset my unit.

Does not seem to be doing much on my A32 test machine.
Just tested on my 70H, no root either ;(
What the application does is:
- install superuser apk
- does something while it says "please wait"
(ps on adb shell shows a

/tmp/ls 0x62c7a315 0x260de680
so ls may well be part of the exploit)
There is a checkbox "Permanent root" that probably just starts Archangel program on boot
(this is just my guess, based on the APK permission, and the fact there is little chance that the squashfs gets written)
Well, I'm pausing my investigation here, waiting for others feedback, hopefully positive.
There is a screenshot of the application here along with a comment from a user saying it worked on an Archos 70 IT.

How long does it take after the button says "Please wait" ?
What's next step on screen ?
Regarding the trojan risk, it's hard to say, you'd eventually want to run tcpdump to log for internet traffic on the tablet when the program is running. Also check if there are programs left (appart from Superuser) after uninstalling Archangel.

note: after install, i didn't asked to be "permanent root", but it launches "archangel" at startup anyway (but no root if i don't ask for)
wifi enabled: yes, enabled AND connected, if not it can't get "root"
how long? if wifi connected, say... 15-25 sec...
next step: nothing, the button "install root" changes in "i'm root" or something like this...
note: i had "superuser" already installed (but not rooted) before installing archangel, so it didn't asked me to install superuser
i'll try to be more precise next time if important...

Can you please give us some details on Archangel program, how the exploit works, why is Wifi necessary ? It would be great to trust this new tool, but it's difficult without having more details on a program coming from a dump archive and not a very well know author...

Market wont work on rooted kindle

Not sure what is going on. I rooted the fire, install vendor.app and framework. I open market it has a difficult time with my gmail.account but after a few tries it authenticates successfully. At this point it tries opening the market and fails. I've tried reinstalling, revolting.
I will say that I have not tried root explorer as I cannot understand how to install it (amazon denies my purchasing it since it is not compatible with my device)
Could it be a rights issue? If I need root explorer how can I get it?

Maybe you should try another version of vending.apk and sideload the root explorer into your fire rather than getting it from amazon.
Then i guess you might need to use the root explorer to modify the permission of vending.apk to rw-r--r--

Easiest fix for this is downloading the Kindle Fire Utilities:

I had so much trouble with the market and other versions of Vendor.apk myself on the stock KF rom and no matter what I did, I ended up with similar issues. Setting permissions isn't really hard at all (most require a chmod 644, which is user/owner read + write, all others just read), and I actually did get it to work just once before having to restore a backup because I screwed something completely unrelated up . If you keep at it, there's a good chance you'll get it right eventually, but I just installed CM7 and couldn't be happier.

Rooted Kindle Fire 6.3 fixed using Kindle Fire Utility

Hey guys i have a Kindle Fire i rooted with burrito root 3 when it was 6.2
Okay so today i turned on my Fire only to see apps missing and so i proceeded to
go to my root app delete application and tried to uninstall the stock facebook app as superuser, i was then notified i wasn't rooted. I immediately went to /device/ checked system version and seen it was now 6.3
I went trolling the web for answers to root and found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340
long story short i decided to take a risk and opened up Kindle Fire Utility hit the #3 key (Install Permanent Root with superuser) once the kindle fired back up (no pun intended lol) I was once again able to be superuser and fully rooted.
I just wanted to let people know 6.3 is still able to be re-rooted via Kindle Fire Utility

When I woke today I seen update 6.3 on the kindle. I seen the posted link showing how to root the 6.3 update. I was able to root my kindle fire again using that post.
Every since I owned my Kindle Fire I was following the CM. Thought I would install CM9 and gave it a try. Besides the current Hardware acceleration issue which I'm sure it's being worked on. I really do like how the CM9 runs and feels so far.
Just cant wait for the Hardware acceleration to be fixed. Just kinda wish I could post in the CM9 post here. Let the guy know how much I like it.

Only that I still have 2 problems:
- cannot install Winamp, at all, just gives me an error about "not available shared library"
- cannot install Titanium Backup. I had it before and after update it kept force closing. Now, when I try to install, it says "Insufficient Application Storage", which surely isn't the case, as I could install NFS shift after this error and it shurely had enough space to do that.
Does anyone know how to solve this? (

OK, I solved with Titanium Backup:
- I could finally install, after finding and deleting this file "app/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBac.....odex"
(where points are, I am not sure what letters were). But I remember it was an ".odex" file. And after deleting it all went well!

OK, I "solved" with Winamp:
- Kinde Fire has some restrictions I wasn't aware of, that stopped Winamp from installing with some shared library, I had to downgrade back to the old Amazon version, and now it installs

My kindle updated 6.03 this afternoon and it worked perfectly with me

Rooting Kindle Fire HD - continually fails

I am about ready to give up. I tried the "root-android.org" oneclick and it continually fails. The technical support for the rooting software from root-android.org is not helping. I'm not sure that the oneclick method has ever worked on a Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3. I have downloaded SDK and the ADB as directed and kindle does show up on my devices (32 bit with Vista running) but various methods can't seem to connect to the Kindle from the PC. I really want to be able to do more with the Kindle and with some help I believe that it can be done. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I do have a Macbook Pro, but everything I have read indicates that you need to use a pc and not a mac.

When I first went to the thread I started to read about the rooting procedure. I went to eat dinner and afterwards the same informationa thread isn't there. The first one stated that with vista I should load some corrective software. It also talked about entering some CMD commands and then rebooting.
After dinner I don't get the same steps when I log on???????

When I am on the Mac I use Firefox and come up with one page for "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117" that shows on top the rating results and the process. When I am on the PC and go to "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117" I am using IE and I get a page that doesn't have the results for rating the process but rather its a page that let's you rate the process and has an entirely differnent bunch of discussions. Go figure...

Thank you so much for the assistance in completing the rooting of my Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3. I have so much admiration for all the developers that take the time to help newbie like myself when it comes to modifying these devices. So you know, the procedure was VERY easy to follow for this 67 year old man. Krsmgn, I am so grateful especially to you for getting me on the right track.:laugh::good:
The only issue I have now is getting Google play to work. I completed all the steps except the last one to keep Amazon from interfering when I want to go to the Google Play store. Sir do you have an app anywhere called terminal emulator? If so go in there and type su and tell me what it says? (Verifying that you have root) after that I may be able to help walk you through the process

Or....
Open ES File Explorer, open settings and choose root settings (down near the bottom) make sure all the boxes are checked. Then you should be able to access /system/.
As for Google Play, go here.

Haha probably a lot simpler to do his method. Also if you have a super user app open it and set it to auto grant permissions. Had an issue myself where it wouldn't show the prompt

Market stops
Fianlly see Google Play in the apps. I rechecked all the steps and found that I cannot move Vending.apk to /System/app. The failure indicates that the file cannot be moved from /sdcard/Download to /System/app.

STOP - I was able to move the file (Vending.apk), rebooted the Kindle and now I can go to Google Play where it shows my already purchased apps for my mobile phone. Look in the settings menu (pull down status bar and click more+), find Applications, click, find Installed Applications, click, look for "Appstore" and force stop, clear data. Reinstall vending apk. Reboot.

Seems like I am there but not quite there. In apps I lose the Google Play icon yet I keep the market icon. I tried downloading a live wallpaper that I have on my phone but it stops. Wallpapers can't be set. Am I missing something?

Seems like you got yourself in a weird spot. Rather then trying to find the needle in the haystack, it's sometimes easier to simply start over from scratch. What I mean is to remove all google stuff and reinstall. I mean everything "google" that wasn't on your kindle when you got it.
Then... Start over here.
Give it a try. I have been right where you are and this has worked for me. Nobody said it was going to be easy to make something do what it wasn't intended to do.

Thanks so very much for your patience and assistance. I have everything working on my Kindle and I owe it all to you. I even have the living wallpapers, seeing all the online videos I couldn't before, using ES file explorer I can look at everything from root down.

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. The One-click Method does work on the Kindle Fire HD and 2 it is not preferred since there are many known Bugs with SuperOneClick. The first problem is the SDK, if you install the SDK and setup the environment variable correctly you will trigger Root MANY ANDROID and Qemu Root to fail since they already have a build in adb tool.
The problem with installing the SDK is several fold:
1. The SDK is over 500MB - The SDK is designed for Developers NOT End Users
2. There are only 2 programs used by the normal End User: adb.exe and fastboot.exe - they total less than 200KB
3. Qemu has its own adb.exe
4. SuperOneClick has its own adb.exe
5. Root MANY ANDROID! has its own adb.exe
So what happens is when SuperOneClick calls to it's internal adb.exe, this triggers the SDK adb.exe to start. They both use the same port so the are unable to communicate to the Kindle due to this port conflict. If adb.exe is lucky, it attempts to pull from it's own Root directory in an attempt to Push su ans Superuser.apk. Guess what? These files are not in the SDK directory so in the end, the utilities completely fail.
The solution? Remove the SDK, you will be able to Root the device in less than 5 minutes. Next you asked about Rooting the Kindle with a Mac, yes this can be done and is preferred over Windows since the Kindle driver is built into Mac OS X, here is a link to the steps:

Finally, since you have Vista, please be sure to apply this fix prior to Rooting the Kindle:

So the final conclusions are:
1. Remove the SDK
2. Remove the SDK Path Statement if Inserted into PATH
3. Verify Driver is functioning
4. Apply the Fix
5. Use the Mac if Windows continues to fail

Please begin the operation per the instructions. Check the driver per the tutorial, then post us what you see in the Windows Device Manager. If everything appears OK, then proceed to the Rooting steps, please let us know what happens with the first two steps - do you see error? If yes, what do they say?
Once you give us additional information we will be able to get you Rooted.

H918 Incomplete root

So I successfully followed this guide for rooting my V20:

I now have SuperSU and TWRP on my phone. However, nothing actually works whenever I do anything root related. I can't uninstall any system apps with "System app remover", deleting anything in /system/app with "Root Browser" doesn't work, and even changing some buildprop settings with "BuildProp Editor" gives me an error that I don't have root. The SuperSU pop-up to grant access showed up for each of them, and I granted access for each of them, yet they still work as if I have no root. Although, checking my root with "Root Checker" or "Root Check" both say that I have root.
If it helps any, my software version is exactly "H91810d".
I'm not really a root wiz, so I'm not sure what to do now. Any help from here is greatly appreciated!

Fixed it
I have finally fixed it! Apparently I need to install BusyBox first to actually be able to do anything. I thought I already have it installed from the App Store; however, I apparently also need to install it by going to the BusyBox app, going to Installer, then installing it there to /su/xbin. For anyone with a similar problem, hopefully this will solve it. Cheers, and Merry Christmas!
