I understood that but...I see the following:
1)kindle setup
2) kindle launcher
3)settings,account and sync settings, settings storage, VPN services. quicksettings. kindlesystem, status bar
which of these should I NOT allow wifi

This is by no means definitive, but here's my post in another thread on this topic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24294896&postcount=62
As of now I still have not gotten the update so I'm hopeful.
My thought process was basically "if it doesn't obviously need network access then don't allow it" and nothing really seemed to break, except the statusbar wifi icon which I don't care about.

How To Prevent Kindle Fire 6.2.1 Update

Posted this on Gizmodo last night - not sure if people would still find it useful.
http://gizmodo.com/5870339/how-to-keep-your-kindle-fire-rooted-and-update+free
Bascially: just install DroidWall and whitelist the applications you want to give access to. Even though I would rather do this for now, TWRP + 6.2.1 w/built in su does seem tempting though.

My post count was too small to create a standalone post or insert URLs.
And actually, zirooo just copied and pasted my Gizmodo article, although he did include a helpful image.
You would have to block all amazon services including video, store, etc.
It might be easier to turn off the wifi.

Actually, you can selectively choose Video and Appstore. Enabling those did not cause the update to download.
The only way to know for sure would be to use the device for a couple days as many suggested blocks didn't show them selves to be ineffectual until a number of days went by.
Well here is why I think this one works for real:
Before installing DroidWall, the instant my Kindle would connect to Wi-fi, my bandwidth would spike to 600kbps (as per my Tomato router). There were no other applications that would be running, so I attributed that to the update. After installing DroidWall, the massive spike ceased.

Useful Prevention Tools For Amazon Updates, Non Root Users

WARNING: NEW UPDATE (14/13.3.2.3) ROLLING OUT, I ADVISE NOT USING THESE METHODS FOR NOW IN RISK OF ACCIDENTALLY UPDATING. STICK TO AIRPLANE MODE AND WIFI OFF FOR NOW. USE THESE METHODS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Thanks to Faznx92 for the update notice.
Alright guys, I believe I have found a decent way on how to prevent Amazon updates while using the device. Some may have done this but maybe haven't mentioned these methods because I have never found a thread on this. If you have other ways to block Amazon's updates, please don't hesitate to post! This is to help you and me, all ideas are welcome
1. Blocking WiFi
I found a neat app on the Google Play store that allows you to block inbound and outbound WiFi transmissions, (or you could just turn off the WiFi yourself, but hey, are you fast enough?). It is called "Net Blocker". Upon starting the application, select every Amazon application (including settings, which is the gear icon) and check the mobile and wifi boxes. You should see the wifi and mobile icons disappear next to the application names. One more important application to disable is your current LAUNCHER. This way the WiFi/Mobile Data is disabled when using the launcher. The WiFi/Mobile Data will be re-enabled if you go on an application that isn't blocked. EX: If you are using Silk Browser (with WiFi/Mobile Data enabled), and hit the home screen (with launcher WiFi/Mobile Data disabled), the WiFi/Mobile Data will disable on its own, since you blocked the launcher.
2. WiFi Timer
Amazon likes to be a butthole and likes to update while you sleep. This app is called "Wifi Timer", which is on Google Play, that allows you to set a schedule when you want your WiFi on or off (or you could just turn off your kindle and not use it). Just add a schedule, select all the days of the week, and where it says "stop wifi" set the time whatever time you go to sleep. It should disable the WiFi at that time if not already disabled by Net Blocker. (Just to be really safe, set a bunch of schedules during the night to disable WiFi) (Also I don't know much about what happens in the background during the update process, but if the application is still running in the background, I'm sure that the WiFi would turn off during the downloading process if your schedule turns the WiFi off. But Amazon probably closes all the running applications before starting the update process so that nothing interferes with it.
I must state that these methods are a tad bit risky (for now). A big flaw in these WiFi methods is the Kindle's feature on remembering the WiFi's password, EX: When the Kindle Update starts, it will search for your saved WiFi and automatically connect with the password it remembered. So if we can find a WiFi manager application that will purposely forget the WiFi's password so that you have to always put in the password every time you want to log in, then that will fix the flaw. Again, Amazon will probably prevent that type of application from running in danger of stopping the updates.
These applications work on the kindle. For those who want to directly download the applications from Google Play use Evozi's Apk Downloader (search for it on Google). When you get to the website copy and paste the Google Play address of the application and click download.
3. DIY Zip Dummy
There has been some debate on this method, I don't recommend this because I'm pretty sure that the kindle has it's own partition for system updates. Basically in this method you fill up you kindle's memory with a zip file full of memory to take up space "preventing" the kindle from installing anything else because of insufficient space. But I wouldn't do this, unless you do it for testing and you want to risk yourself into getting an update.

That was a huge error on my part, I meant to say droidwall, which is the application that requires root to block addresses and applications from wifi.
Block wifi completely when idle
I would just like to add that there are several "battery saver" apps in the kindle store that will immediately disable wifi when the devices screen is off. This way you don't have to worry about schedules at all. When the device is not in use, WIFI is off.
Despite the fact that I blocked all the Amazon stock apps- settings, kindle, etc. I can still download things. This is quite worrying, if I can download it, maybe the kindle can by itself? Maybe I am missing something, lets hope its something obvious.

Could it be silk browser? It is default when it comes to downloading files. Depends what application is downloading. I had no problems preventing downloads, whenever a download is launched by any application (that had the WiFi disabled) the WiFi shuts off, like the Amazon Appstore, and my browsers. Make sure to have the launcher shutdown also so nothing will connect to the internet while using the launcher.

I don't like seeing the same mistake happen twice. There are some good ideas here but there is only a hand full of ways to block the ota update and the most effective ones need root.
1. Roms that removed the ota apps and functions. -root
2. Airplane mode or turning off wifi
3. Apps that block wifi or try to filter it (extremely risky)
4. Tools that disable ota. (My kfhdx utility is one example.) -root
Until we crack the thing I wouldn't joke around with firewall blocking or trying to do so (<-- the mistake I first made).
At least we have ways to block ota effectively. Requires a little patience.

Thanks for the notice, ill update the thread with that warning before attempting these.
Also as a precaution I would recommend going to the WiFi settings and go to your nearest connections and "forget" them, that way if out of nowhere an update starts (which will never probably happen) it won't have anything automatically to connect to.

[ROOT][HOWTO] Disable Lockscreen Ads

WARNING: I am not responsible for any bricked devices caused by attempting this howto. If you haven't read this how to twice, and fully understand the requirements, then please don't attempt it.
Introduction (not important):
First, this may not be the best way to do this, and if someone knows a better way, I'll be happy to listen.
I kinda stumbled across this solution after trying the many other ways to solve the problem, but all the other ways seemed to have something incomplete with them and ended with no ADS, but no something else, like rotating lock screens or something.
I started with the assumption that the ADS program (dtcp) can be disabled through a flag somewhere on the system, for if you pay the extra $20 you get a kindle with no ADS, but same Android build. After looking through lots of sqlite databases I found it in the com.android.providers.settings/settings.db file.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of databases
SQLite Editor Pro (Free on 1Mobile Market)
DroidWall
Steps:
Open SQLite Editor
Open "Settings Storage" (com.android.providers.settings)
Open settings.db
open "global" table
Highlight entry "IS_DTCP_ENABLED"
Click the Edit Record button at the top
Change the value from a 1 to a 0
Click Save
Go back
Make same change on the "secure" table
Reboot kindle for new options to take effect.
Other Thoughts:
This just changes the value temporarily until the device checks back in with Amazon and then the value will get overridden again with the correct value. To prevent that install DroidWall and whitelist only the applications you need to access the internet. DroidWall requires root, which is why root is in the subject. But you should be doing this anyways to prevent OTA updates.
cool
Does this mean that you will now get the rotating native wallpapers that you would have if you paid for the dismissal of the ads? Currently I use adaway on my s4 hotspot and the only one I blacklist is (spectrum.s3.amazonaws.com) this has blocked updates because I am still on old software with no other blocking in place and I have noticed it also has blocked rotateing ads accept I have the same 1 at all times.
Edit: YAY !!!! and yes I now have rotating native wallpapers
Btw thank you for sharing and it is quite refreshing to see a new member join to share useful information in a well thought out and presented OP and not just join to start a thread with a question that is the heading of so many other threads that has been beat to death already..burying perfectly good information..thank you for joining us at XDA!
Awesome!!!! have been looking for a way to do this without factory reset for a while! You da man! Gonna spam that thanks button for a while lol
Thanks so much, that was easy!
Mind after a few days .2 went straight black lock screen
Anyone know what exactly I need to enable in droidwall to have internet but no ota updates or Amazon changing the lock screen back to ads?
Uhg
This mod works fine. No ads, rotating wallpapers appear every time. No reversion to black screen. No need for Droidwall. Use of Droidwall is impractical for this purpose. Who knows what not to include in some giant white list?
It appears that the wallpapers will continue to appear without reversion if you have blocked updates using the root kit.

I assume the block update action from the rootkit is responsible for the lack of reversion to ads since I haven't done anything else except the steps I outlined in the post and the data base tweaks explained above. My kindle has been running for 5 days now without ads and with the startup wallpaper.

I'm left scratching my head over that as well. Tomorrow I will re run the ota block script as I'm now concerned that it perhaps did not do something correctly. I did check for updates and it says last update failed but better safe than sorry. I DO NOT want to end up getting updated again. I finally have this tablet running rather nicely and am quite satisfied with most aspects. Still need much more customization options but it's serviceable now. And this tablet has always had the best touch input response of any I've ever used. I'd hate to have to throw it back in the closet.
I am getting now BLACK SCREENS. Any way to change this?
Script
For anyone who wants to run this from command line (e.g. on reboot or network change event) you can create a script like below and use SManager to run it periodically. You will first need to install sqlite3 binary (google "SQLite Installer for Root").
Here is the script that needs to be executed as root:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
sqlite3 -batch /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "update global SET value='0' where name='IS_DTCP_ENABLED'";
sqlite3 -batch /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "update secure SET value='0' where name='IS_DTCP_ENABLED'";

FireOS 5.6.0.0

Hello this morning 11 November I received a major number update on my fire tablet. It's number is 5.6.0.0 it introduces some optimisation for Alexa as well as some performance optimisations.
First thing I noticed is that some icons are a bit different. The settings icon has been moved to the top of notification panel. Also storage space has been optimised leaving me more free space on internal storage. Roughly it was 500MB more free space.
The other thing I noticed is that my tablet is wee bit faster when operating and switching apps. I'm looking forward to see what else this update bring in term of long period usage.
There is some cosmetic changes like the volume menu showed in one of screenshots below.
I did try root, but the install button is inactive. My Play Store is still working as usual after update. Also my volume booster app(by GOODEV) seems to work ok.
Leave some comments below if you spot some more changes.

Temporary speedups and reduced storage utilization are common after major OTA updates (ie: semi-clean flashes) due to cache recovery and temp file cleanup. Give it a few days to see if the performance/storage improvements are permanent. That said, sounds like Amazon made some nice incremental optimizations to the UI.
Also now we can change WiFi hotspot without going to settings app. Just as in other android versions we can swap them by taping WiFi icon where sub menu appears with choice of networks.
Previously "uninstalled" Amazon Apps remain "uninstalled"
When my FIre 7 (7th Gen) was on 5.3.3.0, I did not block the OTA update. However, I did "uninstall" some Amazon Apps.
After update to 5.6.0.0, those previously "uninstalled" remain "uninstalled".

I verified that "Security --> Apps from Unknown Sources" is indeed enabled.
This would seem to imply that if one did not already have Google Play already installed, Fire OS 5.6.0.0 would not allow Google Play installation.

Nope. You must use a software firewall or equivalent (eg: IP mask on router) to effectively block OTA updates on unrooted FireOS. Or simply stay off WiFi. I'm not confident FireOS 5.6 disables the ability to sideload applications as:
- there are no related reports floating around (although 5.6 is relatively new)
- if this were Amazon's intention they would simply remove the switch that permits installs from "unknown sources"

This is not true. I wiped clean my fire after new update. I was surprised that any of my saved apk files was not able to be installed so I did a little research on this forum and found solution.
All my apk files had Install button greyed out. First I taught it was an apk file error, but after downloading some from internet I realised it must be some kind of way to bypass it.
This solution is not mine so I give all credit to person that figured it out.
After you launch file (*.apk) that you want to install the "Install" button is greyed out. Press the multitask button (square) twice on navigation bar and voila you can now install your file.
I managed to reinstall all of my apps this way - including Play Store.
Just remember activate "Apps from unknown sources" switch in Settings\Security Advanced tab.
If you still have problem installing your apk's check if you don't have any screen filer app installed like twilight for example. Those apps block system features. Also build in "blue shade" toggle might be active - make sure you deactivate it before installation.

Not yet (or at least not publicly posted). Wouldn't go for it; if bootloader has been updated in 5.6.x.x device will brick on rollback attempt.
About the "Install" button grayed-out
With Fire OS 5.6.0.0 :
For Fire 7 (7th Gen), it seems only the "sleep" method works:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74441394&postcount=6
The "square" button method does not seem to work for Fire 7 (7th Gen):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd...k-installs-t3701059/post74500926#post74500926
Start APK Install till the point where the Install button is greyed out ... click the square "key" to activate task view ... select the installer app ... button is no longer greyed out.

that's great! I don't need all the junk on my tablet. I am happy with Amazon Video and the PlayStore
Hi,
About the About the "Install" button grayed-out
I have contacted the Amazon support team. It's indeed a bug.
Quoting their reply:
"Thank you. I have replicated the issue and it appears to be a bug with the software update. I have forwarded this information to the technical team along with the details and they will be looking into this issue and working on this.
However, any outcome regarding the issue will be in the form of a software update."
Didn't receive a timeline for the fix.

OTA update block with AdAway (no root)

Edit: WARNING A few reports of AdAway temporarily stopping the service. You could possibly double up with Adguard or a similar connection blocker. But it's not going to be 100%. Router blocking or a Pi-Hole setup is going to be more secure, so only use this as a temporary measure.
---
I have been able to block FireTV updates using the latest AdAway. It still has the normal rooted method for the lucky folks (edit hosts) but now has VPN "emulation" for those without root. This supposedly uses "VPN API but does not connect to a VPN server" like with editing the DNS but all local to the device. It's open source, on XDA, and has been around forever, so I trust it more than the OpenDNS option.
I don't know how well this works and for how long, but update checks are coming back with errors. It also has a request logger and shows softwareupdates.amazon.com is being triggered & denied. No other domains are checked by the updater after that one fails FWIW.

If there are any more, please share. This seems to do the trick though, and the built-in logger doesn't show any other connections triggered when softwareupdates.amazon.com fails. If this prevents another app from working, you can add the app to the exclude list in preferences.
PREFERENCES
Go to Preferences (bottom left) -> click VPN based ad blocker
Make sure it's enabled at startup
I also selected monitor connection and IPv6 support but no idea if its needed
You can exclude apps. Useful if something isn't working OR one of the domains they block by default messes with an app.
Restart the device
Once you're back up, check the notifications and there should be a persistent notification for AdAway, showing it is active. Go check for an update in the FireTV settings. It should show a connection error.
OPTIONAL AUTOMATIONIf you're super paranoid and want to get fancy, AdAway also responds to external commands. If you use something like Tasker or Automagic, you can send intents to start & stop the service. Example workflow: periodically test the update URLs, if they come back with a normal response then AdAway isn't blocking and probably isn't active, send start service intent.

thank you very much, looks like it worked! now i get the update error.
i hope this method will stay, but i cant see why not. nothing will update on the firetv now so it should stay.

I tried this method with Blokada and it seems to work the same so for people having trouble with AdAway I recommend this app instead.

is there anything special to mind when using blokada?

adaway seems to not autostart anymore on my devices, so i switched completely to blockada.
Blockada seems to work fine now and also autostarts.
Time to set up a pihole it seems.

Yeah unfortunately I think it's having problems for me as well. I caught it mid-update today. Got the pihole planned for this weekend. But all this effort just to use the launcher we want... No idea how the devs here stay motivated to stick around.

Actually i just set up the pihole last night, was really easy following a tutorial and it works great.
I recommend using RaspberryOS light without a Desktop. With this the RaspPi only uses about 1-3% CPU and like 5MB RAM while operating.
i used an old RaspPi 1B+ i bought back in 2012.

I tried this method with Blokada and it seems to work the same so for people having trouble with AdAway I recommend this app instead.

Did you enter those 5 lines in blocked hosts in Blokada? Or where did you enter them? Someone on another posts mentioned they entered them in the blocked hosts so i did the same but it did not work or block updates.
