I am having the same problem. Not in a third party video player such as Mobo player. But when watching flash videos or playing html5 videos all i get is a black screenshot.
I could imagine that it is hardware related, and a questioof the OS being to busy playing video to also take screenshot. If your problem is with the native video player. Try a third party player.
If your problem is with flash, html5 or native player. Tuff luck.. Maybe hope for a fix in the Q2 ICS update..
The situation is the same when it comes to pressing "Print Screen" while watching a movie on a normal PC. I don't know why is that, but you'll also get a black screen, after pasting the image into Paint for example...
To my best knowledge its not possible to take video Screenshots, they will turn out black screens.
Guys I have this problem before.
Just install rockplayer open the video using the app. (Not on file manager)
So you can coos sw or hw mode.
Glhf!

If you open the video in Video Maker you can pause it where you want and then go to edit it with the SPen and take a screen shot.
It will have the SPen edit screen menu items along the top though.
You could always crop them out without losing too much of the picture.
HTH,
Rich
I am not sure if my theory is correct, you may try install player like mxplayer which can chose software decode mode manually. From what i see screenshot is not possible when video playing with hardware decode mode.
Thanx everybody but I think this is a bug in the OS and I hope it will be fixed in the next update. I am not a fan of third party video players so I have not tried taking a screenshot while playing videos in them.

Just to clarify, Video Maker is the video editor from Samsung that comes stock with the Note, so you don't have to install anything new.
Ya that's right but it would have been better to do it from video player rather than the editor.. I hope you agree.

Will nexus s have Divx support is know you can use rock player and stuff but I think on the galaxy s line phones All run 720p Divx formats far better than rock player.... what do you guys think?
Sent from my SGH-T849 using XDA App
I hope so but I doubt it. Nexus One can't do it.
i really hope sou. That is my main selling point. Galaxy s could perfectly play mkv. and divx. in 720p, even with a subtitles. If nexus s cant i would be very disappointed
i dout that will be installed, maybe try to extract that that from Galaxy s?
Will probably need the whole touchwiz framework along with the corresponding apps (video player, divx etc) for it to work. Haven't tried CM 6.1 Beta 3 for my i9000, but from what I've heard, it doesn't work on there.
I don't see why it wouldnt. The other 9000 galaxy s variants all play it. Why wouldn't this one?

Because its pure Google and previous android dont have the proper vid and audio codecs.
But im confused on how codecs work on this phones because I think the galaxy s line are all hard coded were other none supported devices use crappy software acceleration
I'm really hoping its supports all the great codecs the galaxy S line did but im not getting my hopes up. If not this is going to be my first request from developers ill make a hefty donation to get this avi, xvid .mkv and ac3 working again
those codecs were built into the system of the Galaxy S phones.
The Nexus S will not have any of them so we'll be forced to use other apps.
However, with any luck some good developer may be able to hack them out of touchwiz and add them into a custom stock rom, i wouldn't hold my breath though.
Basically your gonna be using rockplayer, or convert your movies to something othe than divx.
Use RockPlayer or VPlayer! Both are good apps, the latter one is free.

yeah, but with does two apps everything with a little higher quality is more like a slideshow instead of movie. Only thing they can play are low quality divx. Well, we still have converting but then again whats the purpose of that. We are all trying to avoid converting because its boring and takes time. Comon google, bring some codec support
Yea i used rockplayer back with my N1 garbage only software rendered
better off using handbrake and re-encode to mp4 and use android default player
Galaxy s is hardware rendered and run and look fantastic on SAMOLED esp when running 1280x720 HD avi, mkv files
I can look past everything else taken away but IDK i really like my video support on my vibrant
=
That's like the one thing Samsung did right with the software, was include a very good media player.
Can anyone, from those who got one today, confirm if it has DivX or not
I have a Nexus S and I can confirm it has no divx support. I can also confirm that vplayer beta is not supported on the Nexus S and will force close when attempting to open a video file.
Is Rockplayer the only option?
no divx but can it play mkv ?
How does Rockplayer work with HD videos that are not 720P?

Rockplayer force closes as well with divx.
Rockplayer, vPlayer and all other DIVX players i tested from market are force closing as soon as you try to play a movie file.
Anyone has found a solution to play all the media files(mkv, divx) on the Nexus S? RockPlayer & VPlayer both don't work. I think they need to update the app for 2.3..

I've been looking for a good movie player and found a app called Vital Player..it works great.try it out!! Works better than rock player and qq player to me.
The reviews complain about proper support for mp4, m4v and mkv. What is your experience?
I personally have played 720p mp4 videos on it with no problem.I will try it a bit more when I get home but so far it works great!
It doesn't play sound using my 720p mkv movies.
played sound on my handbrake-encoded 720p .mkv file but no picture...
I got an idea, I'll put my xoom on top of yours and we'll get sound AND video!
You have to slide your finger up or down the right side for sound & sliding your finger on the left side adjusts brightness. It's pretty neat.I love it so far & my movies look far better using this app than the stock player
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Sound is at 100%, its the same problem as with the native player.
have problems playing back sound with MP4 video and switching it to software decoding doesnt help play anything back.
I use total video converter to do all my videos.I don`t know if that has anything to do with it.I`m watching Descent 2 now on it with no problem.Sorry that it doesn't work for you all.I tried. :-(
Ill stick with rockplayer seems to work best for me
i found vplayer to be outstanding. Plays anything. ..however since I got my zoom it has stopped working. Dev said he would work a fix. As a side note the app has a lot of negative reviews due to the fact he started charging for the app. Not fair to humbug any means.
Have you been able to make it work on xoom?

The mating of Xoom tablets is strictly forbidden by Motorola and the laws of nature.
On the bright side, you may end up with an Atrix...

Until we get a Tegra 2 and/or OpenMAX accelerated application everything is going to be half ass. I hope someone who knows how to code has a XOOM. I tried reading a basic book and I got lost. Coding isn't my cup of tea. I keep telling myself someone will cone through for us before I can figure it out myself.
I just don't get it ..Vital Player works perfect on mine..It even has a Setting especially for the Xoom so i dont see why it work for you all..I also see that there are 2 version of Vital player ..1 is called vital player neon..that one didnt work for me.I'll be buying the full version of Vital player because it plays the files rockplayer & qqplayer wouldnt play for me.
Please keep it on topic. Thank you.
I've downloaded and tried all the players on the market and still have the best all around playback with Rockplayer Universal (from the rockplayer website).
I use DVDFab to convert easily and fast, and Act 1 video player on device
I just got my Note in the mail from Clove UK. And everything is great so far, and I dunno if this is and Android thing (This is my first Android device) or a Samsung thing. When I play videos from You Tube or videos that I encoded the blacks are heavily pixelated. (Not sure if that's a word). Am I doing something wrong? What program and/or setting is the best to get rid of that black pixel issue? The test video of the jelly fish works great. Noob questions I know! Thank in advance again for your help.
My guess is that its not directly your fault.
There are several aspects to think of here:
- It may be that artefacts (caused by video encoded in low bitrate) are more noticable on a screen like that of the galaxy note than others.
- It may be that youtube just delivers you the low quality version of the video.
- The video on youtube may be in bad quality to begin with, try other youtube videos and see if it happens only on a few ones or many.
- Note: I see now you already tried the video, so that is probably not a cause. (Your screen itself may have some flaws. Check on that for instance by using a screen test tool like "Screen Test" or playing the video already supplied with the Note (Open the standard video player app that comes with it and select "lightness & slimmess"))
When it comes to watching youtube on a mobile device I recommend (if you have a mobile data connection with enough bandwidth, such as good umts or hsdpa or Wifi) to enable high quality in the youtube app (whenever possible, use the youtube app, and do not play it in the browser).
To do this hit the options button in the youtube app, select settings and enable the first option to enable high mobile quality.
Secondly many videos will allow you to switch between lower and higher quality with the HD button on the upper left (visible at the start or when you tap the screen while palaying) - if you enable high mobile quality this should be turned on to high quality by default.
When it comes to youtube thats probably all you can do to improve quality.
When it comes to playing videos in general (excluding youtube) the standard player can manage most formats. However if you have trouble with some videos you may want to give Dice player a try!
Hope this helps!
Ok thanks, I will def try that!
I belive this is coursed by the hight res/density of the Note screen and low quality of the video in YouTube app, I think the highest quality of video in the YouTube app is only 480P.
I also noticed this problem while streaming old TV shows from PLEX to my Note, this is less noticeable with my Tab 10.1 with the same resolution but its screen is about 4 times larger.
You could use the stock or most aftermarket browser and watch 720P YouTube using Flash on normal YouTube site.
simple solution is to not use the app and just use a browser. ive had no issues watching 720p videos in youtube on the browser.

I have also experienced this on other vids and am convinced it may a bit depth limitation of the Note screen... but need to verify.

I've noticed this too with the You Tube app. The blacks sometimes are blocky. A good example is the Avatar 1080p trailer, especially around 15 seconds mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i2RCBa3l-g
If I view the same clip on You Tube via a browser (720p settings) it looks better, but the browser is a fiddly substitute for the app on a phone. It does seem to be mostly a bitrate limitation though, so maybe Google or a.n. other hacker needs to modify "HD" on their app to mean a higher bitrate, now we're defining 1280x800 as a mobile screen resolution .
[edit]
Actually, if I watch that Avatar clip in the browser with a playback quality set to 240p or 360p it obviously looks pixelated, but doesn't show the blockiness that's in the You Tube app stream. Looks like the app either is handling the stream differently (badly) or the stream itself is different to that which is sent to the flash plugin in the browser. Wonder if Google is using a different codec for their app. WebM maybe?
I am a long time lurker but rarely post. This is my first time creating a thread. I always hated watching movies through HDMI and still having the Transformer screen on mirroring. Well the ICS update must have done something good or maybe an upgrade to the MX Video Player. I put a family movie on tonight (running stock ICS 9.2.1.17) and played it using MX Video Player Free from market. To my delight, when I plugged in the HDMI, the Transformer screen went blank. It was still on but displayed nothing but a blank black screen. Hooray, as myself and others on this forum have looked for solutions or work around to turn off the mirroring. Now the Transformer screen is on, because I can see the backlight slightly. It is nice to use the Transformer, only as a player, when using the HDMI, with the big screen TV, for movie night.

are you using hardware or software mode?
subtitles works too?
That's great news! ICS is great
Huh? It's been doing that since Honeycomb.
The screen was blanking for me on 9.2.1.11 and MX Video player as well.

Using hw decoding mode always screen is not showing anything. This was happening in honeycomb too.
On the other hand I noticed that HDMI out using sw decoding its less cropped in the new update than it used to be before.I was expecting subs to be displayed using hw decoding but still nothing:/

The player is acknowledging Hardware Playback and yes subtitles work too.
There is anyway to use hdmi out at 1080p?
Does the same thing with NETFLIX. Tablet screen goes black while playing video over HDMI. It did not do this in Honeycomb.

Good to know. I had not tried that out yet. All my videos are playing through HW decoding on MX Video Player. So I can't comment on screen display. I did however accidentally leave the subtitle file in the directory of one of my movies (*.srt) and subtitles did play a bottom of screen. Can't remember if I had it hooked to HDMI or was using SW decoding.
I have tried several players (MX, Dice, BS, QQ), but only MX and QQ do hardware acceleration and none of them plays really smooth.
For testing, I used a 720p 24fps Blu-ray rip which plays smoothly on my Galaxy Nexus using MX.
On the N10 it's only *almost* smooth, it looks a bit like if it cannot update the screen fast enough (maybe because of the resolution).
Developers probably need some time to update their app to support Nexus 10's hardware decoder. I would shoot them an email for status.
BTW, I also tried that Timescape 1440p video and I tried the Google Movies Player. Same problems.
Vlc player?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the tip. But VLC does not finish scanning at start. Have to force close it.
Also tried VPlayer, but it shows a black screen when HW decoding is enabled.
Try mx player. And dont forget to download mx player decoder based on your procie.
Yeh I'm sorta disappointed at the player also cannot find a video that can display this screens potential and run without dropping frames' I'm sure software can help with this and app updates. Also every website image looks so bad on this screen due to websites not having hi red images lol I'm sure they will fix that for the iPad and in turn for us lol

Already tried MX. What codec should I download? I thought MX displays a message, if you should download a codec.
Maybe the problem is related to 24p. I will have to find something in 60p.
Would be interested in this also as I currently can only use S/W decoder on MX Player.
Give MoboPlayer a shot.
MX player after todays update is playing most files smooth.

I have yet to recieve an update and all files I try and play I get "Cannot play this file with H/W decoder", and S/W I get like 7 FPS.
