ICS Mod with Kindle Launcher - Kindle Fire General

I've have successfully flashed ICS with both CM9 / MIUI. Is there a way to have both an ICS mod and have the Kindle launcher? I really want the updated Android build along with the ability to still use the Kindle interface to view videos, books, etc.
Is that possible?
Thanks,
Roy

I really dont know truthfully but what I do is keep a backup of my rooted stock system and use twrp to float back and forth between cm7 and stock build and use ota rootkeeper to be able to view amazon video because it hides the fact I have root. I keep my backups well named soI can quickly choose the correct one in twrp

What exactly is CM7 for the Kindle Fire

so my KF is rooted, google market, gapps and all that good stuff is working fine.
I see in the DEV thread that cm7 is about to be released but im wondering what exactly does this really mean?
Is cm7 just a custom OS that the KF will boot to? What OS will it be? What benefits does this have over currently having the KF rooted with all the apps working properly from the the google market place as well as amazon?
Sorry for the noob question, i want to go install cm7 when its ready but wondering what it really is all about.
Thanks
okay i think i figured it out, its just wiping out everything that is on it now, like a format, and putting a gingerbread OS on it instead.
it will just be a full blown version of gingerbread with no limitations to anything you can do on it.
right?
It's this http://www.cyanogenmod.com/
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about
I'd recommend their website for a start. Basically they are a team of developers that develop aftermarket firmware for a number of different Android based devices. The OS is a modified version of AOSP - Android Open Source Project.
One reason why CM7 is such a big deal is because Cyanogenmod is such a leader in Android development. Many other developers leverage the work done by the CM team in order to create custom ROMs and make improvements to Android devices. At a user level, running CM7 will give you an enhanced vanilla Gingerbread AOSP.
There are a lot more qualified people that could give you better info, but that's a start - and i'm sure someone will correct me if I said something wrong...
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/
have a look there are multiple versions and cm 9 ....ice cream sandwich is not far away ... Cyanogen is the most used custom ROM on Android .... unofficially over a million kmobs said he is a cyanogen dev

I think one difference that you may consider a benefit is that the automatically installed updates, periodically pushed by Amazon, will no longer unroot your device and remove your system/app installs (Android Market, gApps, etc.) like the last one did for rooted users, because it will not be an Amazon device at all anymore. And you can still install the kindle app (and Amazon Video, I hope?) which makes this machine an awesome value for its retail cost.

amazon video will require an extra help from an app for that...it can work on other unrooted devices but if it detects your device as rooted then it wont let you stream videos

Everyone get's the be a noob (including me at this site) I've been on CM since the 5.x days for my Nexus dev phone and it's in my opinion the best aftermarket ROM out there. In my case what I like so much about it is the enablement of all of the capabilities that the hardware actually supports. My Nexus when initially released it didn't have 802.11N and no FM radio (even though the hardware supported it) CM is basically what you really wanted out of a ROM (and not just what the manufacturer or marketing wanted to give you)
Take the plunge (once things settle down a bit unless you like alpha's and the constant change) You'll not look back...

[Q] Stock Kindle Reader on Firs with ICS

So I successfully rooted my Fire and installed and ICS build - very happy with it! Much thanks to all the developers out there doing great work!!!
The only thing missing would be to have a way to install the stock Kindle Fire reader app onto the rooted Fire with ICS. Not having access to the additional features such as margin adjustment, lending library, etc. is kind of a pain.
Any ideas on how to get that to work?!?

[Q] Fixing issues on a Rooted "Stock" KF

I am new to the Kindle Fire, and recently rooted with Kindle Fire utility without a hitch. Many thanks to all the Dev's that put that together, great work. I am not new to rooting and customizing ROMs on Droid phones, but new to the "tablet" world.
However, after doing some searching, I am unable to find information on some things.
1) Google Market. Its running fine, but there are a ton of apps missing from the market (ie Facebook). I have seen some threads on how to fix this if I am on CM7, but was wondering if its possible to do this on a "stock" rooted KF?
2) Blocking updates. Is there an easy way to "block" Amazon from being able to push updates to the device? I know this has caused issues like losing root, etc.
3) Freezing Apps. Are there any "standard" apps or processes that can be frozen/removed from the Stock ROM that aren't needed? I haven't been able to find a definitive "list".
Thanks again,
-Sf-

Hey there.
Let me see. You can use "Titanium backup" to freeze stupid things like maps. I dont have mine anymore so i cant populate a list for you atm. You can try to update the "Market" app to resolve issues with missing apps. My advice: use stock rom, root it. And use a launcher like launcher pro. Then use setcpu.
1 - try the modaco rom - it shows to the market as galaxy tab:

Editing the build.prop file should fix market visibility. I just purchased and rooted mine last night but i'm also having the same issue. Going to try out this after work. Should do the trick. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371021

Sounds good. I saw this post, but I haven't seen a build.prop for the stock rooted Kindle fire. If you get yours to work, please post it. Thanks!

I would like to stick with the stock rom, since hardware acceleration seems to be an issue with most of the custom roms. Do you know if Modaco supports hardware acceleration?
The only roms that have trouble with hardware acceleration are the ICS roms, all other roms have working HWA.
As far as I know the missing apps from the market can't be fixed if your on stock, even if you edit the build.prop, thats why I moved from stock to cm7.
I don't know if there is a way to completely block amazon updates, but I just froze silentupdate with titanium backup when I was stock and I never got the notification to move from 6.2.1 to 6.2.2.
The only app I know of that can freeze apps is titanium backup pro in the market, and there is no list of apps that can be removed/frozen on the stock rom, just use common sense when removing/freezing the apps, don't delete an app if you don't know exactly what it is or delete the kindle launcher, and then wonder why your homescreen is gone, and make sure to backup any apps you mess with.

modaco is a optimized 6.2.2 stock rom - you can update with it and loose nothing cause it don't format any partitions - read the op of modaco for more information ...

Thanks I will take a look at that. Thanks for the advice.
Looks like MoDaCo for the Kindle Fire was the way to go. My market is working great now, system is very fast, really impressed overall. Still retains the "stock" feel with a few tweak. Now I have to figure out if it doesn't get updates from Amazon.
look at my first post - the link in point 2
allthrough i think in modaco the file is allready removed it's better to check twice
There is a system app called OTA Silent Update and you can just delete it and your all good.

[Q] Best ICS ROM?

I have a Kindle Fire on the way. What's the best ICS ROM to put on it in your opinion? Which ROM is the most stable? GB or ICS? Any input you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
Good ROMs
Okay, so there are a whole bunch of roms for GB and ICS.
-Cynogenmod 7 (gingerbread) is the most stable, and is a daily rom.
Runs games, internet, apps great - never crashed
-ICS (based on CM9) is also pretty stable, but still not quite as good yet IMO.
With ICS there are lots of good roms:
- Stock(ish) ICS - not quite as recent though - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411895
-Classicnerd ICS - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527046
-Energy ICS Rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528024
-MIUI ICS - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488930
All of these have small bugs, and no hardware acceleration.
I've probably forgotten a whole bunch, so check out this great thread to keep up with things!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467013
By the time you've got your KF, ICS will be even more stable.
Not long 'till we see a daily use rom!
Thanks to the DEVS!
Hey, thanks a bunch. It's nice to actually see some helpful people. If your a sign of the kind of people in this section, then i'm definitely looking forward to hanging out here. I appreciate your input.
Not a problem, happy to help, PM me if you have any more trouble!
Flashing Energy ICS ROM
Since we are on the subject of ICS ROMS, I hope someone can answer this question. In the Energy ROM thread in the developers section, they mentioned using TWRP to flash that ROM. I used the BurritoRoot3 utility to root my KF and it installs FireFireFire for recovery. I got the impression from the Energy ICS thread that you HAVE to use TWRP to flash the ROM but that doesnt seem right to me.
CAn someon set me straight on this? If it is the case, how hard will it to be to replace FireFireFire with TWRP ?

Im new to the Kindle Fire, but I've been reading and googling. FireFireFire is the custom bootloader that allows onetouch operation to get into recovery. TWRP is the actual recovery.
Will someone confirm this?

You are right. Firefirefire is the bootloader. You can install it when you root it using burito3. TWRP is the recovery. I believe someone actually sucessfully installed Energy rom using CWM too. I am using TWRP and have successfully flash the Energy.
I installed the ICS Energy ROM using CWM. Not a problem.

Bootloader is different from TWRP. TWRP is recovery. You dont replace firefirefire with TWRP
I installed cm7 and it didn't seem to handle portrait mode well. I don't know if it was an aspect ratio issue, but it made it unusable for me.

Thanks all. Im not sure why I didnt realize Firex3 was the bootloader and not a recovery. Thanks for setting me straight nicely!

The stock cm7 launcher is adw amd it gave me issues especially in portrait. Many apps were unusable in portrait (google music for example).

Rooting and Installing CM10.2 Jelly Bean 4.3 on Kindle Fire HD 7.

Hello all!
Thanks to this great forum and other sources, (but mostly this forum) I was able to turn my Kindle Fire into a Google tablet with a lot more functionality than the stock Amazon Kindle. Thus, I've decided to show my appreciation by making a contribution of my own in the hopes that it will be very helpful to others attempting the same thing, since I had to search multiple sources to find solutions to the various problems I ran into. Now hopefully with what I've managed to compile, people won't have to do what I did and the process will be made much quicker and smoother! Since I'm new I can't put urls in my post, so I've made a nice .pdf to download with the links to all necessary downloads.
Enjoy, and a huge thank you to xda-developers!
EDIT: The .pdf route just wasn't work out, I guess, so I put the original Word file.

I think you should research more before putting this up for everyone. There is no unroot after rooted on KFHD. Some things can be accessed via Amazon apps other such as Amazon Prime movies cannot. If someone wants that, they should go with Kinology ROM. Root many Android has there downloads on XDA as well.
I know that you're trying to help but there are tutorials here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347170 for the 7" and as many 8.9" tutorials.

Just sharing what worked for me, because doing this on the Kindle is quite complicated and difficult, and people often run into issues. So if something doesn't work, we resort to searching the web for other methods. Therefore the more methods that are available the better chances someone has of getting it to work.
And sorry, but I would appreciate it if you didn't accuse me of not doing enough research. There were multiple sources that said unroot does work for the HD. I guess I'll have to try it myself, though.

Your instructions are choppy and missing steps. If I were a n00b, I would be confused. You can un-root a Kindle Fire HD and go stock again by restoring the system. But the statement you made at the end of your tutorial makes no sense. A rooted Kindle Fire HD does not lose any of the Amazon features. You cannot swap back and forth unless you flash an Amazon OS nandroid backup or use Kinology. That's how you regain the features of the Amazon OS after installing a 2nd bootloader and a custom ROM.
You know what I would appreciate? Don't offer something in a tutorial that can't be done and you have not even tried yourself because when people try it, they can do some damage to an expensive tablet.

Have you installed TWRP and a second bootloader? This is prerequisite for a custom ROM on a Kindle Fire HD.
