I usually have my Triumph with no complaints (well a few) but recently someone stepped on mine at the gym >:[ so I'm stuck with my old intercept for a while, an issue that's been bugging me is its ****ty internal storage. I wanted to know if there's anyway to put the majority of my apps onto my external SD (and have mms/sms sent there by default as well)

I apologize in advance because this topic has probably been beaten to death. I am still a bit confused on how internal and external memory are handled in Honeycomb. A lot of the info I've read applies to non-Honeycomb releases. I'll just start with some basic questions.
1. Is external memory treated differently than internal memory?
2. Can you install apps in either location and expect them to perform/behave the same?
3. Can you place data (docs, music, videos) in either location and expect them to perform/behave the same?
This is all leading to my real concern:
4. If I get a Transformer with 16GB internal and purchase a 32GB micro SD card, will all of that memory be usable without caveats? In other words, can I just install apps or load data in either location without having to worry about things having to be in one place or the other?
Again, I apologize if this a repeat. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of data regarding Honeycomb and external memory. That or it is difficult to find because of the overly common key words used when searching on this topic.
EDIT: If there are any links already explaining this, I will gladly read them and just let this thread die.
Thanks
One important thing to note is that the internal memory is always going to be faster than external. My suggestion is keep apps on internal memory and use the external memory for your pictures, videos, and music.
You can actually get away with smaller apps on a microsd card. Just remember to get a class 6 or higher.
My plan is to have 16 gig internal
32 micro SD in the tablet
32 gig SD in the keyboard dock
LEEDROID DESIRE HD using XDA PREMIUM
This has been a problem since the beginning of android tablets.
Most phones come with an external sdcard when you buy them. So, the internal memory gets mounted at /emmc, and external at /sdcard.
Since tablets do not come with one(and internal is rather large), internal is mounted at /sdcard. Then external would be mounted at /sdcard2, then /sdcard3 i assume for the transformer dock.
The key thing is whether or not the mediaprovider service for android is modified by asus to scan those extra locations. If not, then only media on /sdcard will be recognized.
It looks like the custom xoom kernel work gets around this by mounting /sdcard2 within /sdcard. (/sdcard/sdcard2) This allows the media to be seen on both, but can cause issues with mounting, etc.
I'm not sure how Asus is handling this, but it has been an issue all along.
Actually, I don't think it's a dumb question. I'm still wondering the same thing. What are the implications of installing stuff on the microSD?
This sucks. I got a 16 GB model some time ago expecting marshmallow and a good microSD card to be the ticket. I have a Sandisk Ultra 128 Gb class 10 card which is well regarded for speed and reliability. I FINALLY got Marshmallow recently and went through the process of getting my card reformatted for adaptive storage. I was surprised during the process that the phone gave me a warning that the card was slow and I may experience problems, but I pressed on.
Everything seemed to work fine after the 'conversion' and the phone seemed snappy enough. Though I hadn't yet installed any new programs in the new configuration. I merely backed up photos and audio media that was being stored on the card, and then restored them to their proper location after the reformat to integrate the card with internal storage.
I then installed some apps I had removed to make space on internal storage previously. Now the phone is totally unusable. I get about 1-3 minutes of usage after boot before it hangs up on a screen, or with the notification shade pulled down. The phone just totaly freezes; I can't even power it down (need to look up how to force it to shut down).
What have I gotten myself into? Why would that card be considered 'slow and/or inadequate' when I purchased it less than 6 months ago and it is rated a good and fast card?
Any suggestions on how to proceed? I need and counted on the combined storage capability (or I never would have gone or the 16 Gb model).
Thanks for any help.
oh, and random reboots and also the screen going blank but the phone not actually being off (battery died really fast) overnight. I'm trying to get into the bootloader and do traditional things like clearing dalvik cache (is that current? I haven't done much rooting and messing around with the guts of Andriod since Kit Kat), etc.
I had to revert too. Limited TWRP support, very slow apps, couldn't connect via USB to the SD storage. I bought the 16GB thinking the same thing. Was a mistake as of now.
Besides not being able to do anything with the card in TWRP, I'm having no problems using adaptive storage, and I too use a 128GB SanDisk Ultra.

I'm not worried about TWRP. I'm actually content with the phone non-rooted if adaptive storage works, since it's not carrier locked and I can do things that previously Verizon wouldn't let me. I'm not interested in mucking around with new ROM's and stuff anymore; too busy with other tinkering projects and i have plenty of other viable devices to do that with (amazon phone and tablet, older android phones, etc.). I want this one to be a stock daily driver; but I want it to f'ing work as indicated.
I just got done doing a factory reset, formatting the SD card as internal and restoring (system tool; is that a Moto thing or Lollipop+?). We'll see how it goes. I may just have mucked it up trying to convert to adaptive storage after having used it with Lollipop AND even moving some apps to the SD card.
OK. So I bought my S7 Edge two weeks ago. It's been great. Lovely phone. Actually really enjoying the Good Lock + "stock" theme setup.
I bought a Patriot 128gb MicroSDXC card from amazon (https://www.amazon.ca/Patriot-128GB...9579692&sr=8-1&keywords=patriot+128gb+microsd) last week.
At first things seemed fine. I started downloading all my Google Play Music to my sd card. I changed camera storage to the SD card. Great.
Then i started noticing that Google Play Music was sometimes not registering that I had an SD inserted. I had to change my storage to internal card and back to external card to get it to work again (which is a pain because that means transferring all my music back and forth)
Three days ago, I started getting stranger issues. Whenever the microSD card was inserted, my wifi toggle off after a few seconds of downloading from Google Play Music. I would then not be able to toggle it back on until i restarted the phone and paused any Google Play Music downloads. This seemed to progress into an even worse issue where my phone would freeze and become unresponsive while wifi was toggled off (and unable to toggle on due to whatever the heck was going on due to the SD card).
I feared that my phone was a lemon and I would have to send it in. The customer service at Rogers (where i got the phone) knew nothing and said it would be 3-4 weeks for a replacement to arrive or for it ot be repaired (terrible).
As a last ditch effort, I took out my microSD card. Voila. All issues are gone. Wifi does not break after downloading music. No phone freezing.
What gives? Anybody else with this issue? Is it just a faulty SD card? Why would the SD card break the wifi? Do MicroSD cards with this phone often cause wifi issues? It might make sense since the sim card is close to the SD card - perhaps the SD card messes with the modem hardware...
What do you think?
I am currently in the process of returning my SD card to get a samsung card. Maybe that will help. I really hope it is not just my phone as this repair process seems stupid.
Looking at the reviews on Amazon there seems plenty of people moaning about loss of photos etc, having to reformat the card multiple times. I would ditch it and get a SanDisk.

Thanks, I'll look into SanDisk options. You using one? 128gb?
Weird that the faulty microsd card would mess up my wifi though... Still don't understand that.
Yeah that is odd, yes I'm using the 128gb and its never missed a beat. Good luck

Just an update on this.
I got the SanDisk 128gb card and I have had zero issues so far (almost a week now).
Looks like the Patriot 128gb has some issues with the S7 Edge or maybe mine was just faulty.
really weird that it messed with my phone that much though (losing wifi and responsiveness from the phone)
Glad you got it sorted.

I've been using a Samsung 128Gb Evo+ since April with no issues at all.
Had the Priv for a few days. I set it up with a 128gb memory card formatted as extended memory.
It was HORRIBLE. So laggy.. Facebook for example kept freezing so badly that android wanted to close it every few minutes. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. ?. I was going to return it.
I noticed that apps took ages to install. Like 5 minutes and more.
I reformatted as external media, reduced the animation times, and now it flies! Not as quick as my Huawei P9, but everything else makes up for it. Loving a more normal Android for a start, the P9 was great but they ruined android.
Now I love my Priv. If you have problems, try what i did with the memory card.
But i wish it had notifications pop up on the edge, when the screen is off.

Picked up a Priv the other day. I flashed the modified AT&T firmware with international software so no ATT bloat. But the phone is so slow and lags. WHen you state you formatted as external media, how did you do this> And are you referring to the internal storage or the SD card? For some reason my Priv will even recognize my SD card (32gb) I place the SD card in my pc and it sees it no problem. I have formatted the sd card to fat32/exFAT/ntfs, etc and no matter the format Priv will not see it....
The issue you're having is that you are not formatting the SD card correctly. That particular memory card that you are using was previously formatted as internal storage on another device and is encrypted. It's a fairly simple process through command line. A quick Google search will help you out. If you can't find, let me know and I'll pull it for you.

I factory reset the Priv with a new card inserted. I honestly can't remember the exact procedure, but I'm pretty sure it asked me how I wanted to use it. Either as external media, or to extend the internal memory (So it all appears as internal memory, and encrypted)
For me, the best solution was to use it as external memory.
I got the LG V20 (Model H910) with 64GB last November and was pretty happy with it overall, especially the price and that it had a replaceable battery. With all my apps installed, I still had over 27GB free space, more than enough to hold me a long time, plus a 128GB sd card. I had quickly discovered the "Marketing Services Manager" app that was randomly adding unwanted apps to the phone and deleted that within the first week.
But then about 4 months later the free space started shrinking, until the last few months when it was down to less than 1GB free space and the phone was extremely slow. I moved all apps possible to the sd card, that got me back to almost 5GB free space. But that free space was quickly disappearing as well until I said screw it and ordered a new phone. I deleted most all apps off the V20 except for a few I wanted to see the setups and would just reset the phone afterwards and see what would happen.
Before I reset the phone took a screenshot of the Disk Usage app showing the 42GB in system data, and one after I set the phone back up again, with all original apps back showing the 470MB in system data. I half expected the internal storage to be corrupt and unusable, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Any idea what caused this? I had no rogue apps installed, nothing suspicious looking at all, everything possible was always stored on the sd card except for apps, cache was cleared, phone was not rooted. Is this some weird Android or LG bug? I had the LG G5 before the V20 and it was a great phone and never had this issue. And after 4 years use, the G5 system data is only 3.58GB, more along what I would expect. I use my phones for at least 3 years, but a few things bugged me about the V20 so I was ready to just cut my losses and dump it. But I'm really curious if this can happen again randomly.
