At which point Android 2.3.5 will be a month old, prompting SE to delay yet again so that they can test everything with the new version LOL

If the 2.3.4 comes and you don't want it, just don't update.
Seriously, do we have to rain on EVERY parade here?

2.3.4 is not out on Verizon yet, the only way to upgrade to that is to root your phone.
As for ICS while Sony will release it for the Play in general, its up to Verizon to release for the phone. Based on how they basically forgot about it recently, and past performance, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I personally think they will release it, they released FroYo way after it was released for the LG Ally. But only time will tell...
thanks! do you no when 2.3.4 will be out on Verizon?

Is there a way to get the ICS update without unlocking your bootloader? Can you point me to a guide?
My R800x is rooted, but not unlocked.

As stated before, there is high doubts that 2.3.4 will ever see a release for our phone. More than likely Verizon (if they decide to do it) will skip straight to ICS if and when they decide to make it available.

Off the top of my head, this is the only one I've tried in the past:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416470
If you're looking for the legit update, we haven't gotten it yet; everything you see is simply based off of ROMs that are themed to ICS.

will i hop we get some more news about this soon
is there a way i can test the android 4.0 on my phone?
well from what i can tell from following the commets on that other thread that it dos loook like the R800x may get a big upgrade later in the year if testing gos well on it
Or you can wait untill CM9 is officially released for the Xperia Play..
Thought id start this thread to create a bit of build up to the upgrade, im a regular arc user so ive still got another month or so to wait but il feel good if the arc s gets theirs on time, which being the end of march could be any day now. Sony seem to be quiet on this, anyone heard anything?
I'm hoping they release the ICS for arc s by the end of this weekend, the suspense is killing me slowly lol. I check this forum and sony blog post every morning.
As they said late March to early April, that could mean the update would between 15 March and 15 April.
Would love to get an update from SE on the progress for the first phones that are due upgrades.
Clearly feeling a little bit left out now that Samsung are releasing theirs.
Hasn't HTC also updated a device?
Sony is behind - again

I'm very enthusiastic about ICS too but doesn't it mean that we won't have our devices rooted anymore? I've linked tons of apps via Link2SD and my Arc don't have enough space to hold them all.
I'm worried when we will have to upgrade to ICS, AFAIK a lot of apps out there is not yet compatible with ICS, until the developer will upgrade the app.
But I'm also Excited because lots of optimization and features will be available to us, specially that Adreno 205 Driver will be included(I read it somewhere)

I think otherwise. Almost every app I tried is fully compatible with ICS.
Also, Sony has announced the neo L in China and it launches with ICS on board. It uses the same chipset as the arc (MSM8255). Perhaps we could port it when someone gets and uploads the filesystem dump, that is, if the device comes out sooner than the ICS update.
There's nothing on PTCRB yet and updates usually appear on here well in advance of the update actually being pushed. So it could still be weeks away assuming they haven't had any serious issues they need to fix first. It's been 4 weeks since the beta and not a peep from the Sony devs here on XDA which is a shame.

I don't think it will be a problem. I also have an Asus Transformer TF101, and that got ICS a few weeks back, no application compatibility problems, and it's REALLY quick (it was quick before anyway).

yeah i agree, in their blog post they stated "Over the next months we will be keeping you up to date on progress and we will also share video demos of the new software running on 2011 Xperia™ smartphones." it doesnt look good....
Probably see it in April, just my safe guess.
I am really looking forward to being able to force gpu acceleration because I don't like scrolling lag
i hope 2011 xperia can still support jelly bean in the future...
By XDA sure, by sony no. I doubt they will release another major update after this. Look at the X10, got gingerbread update and that was it.

There's 50% chance they will do it and if they do, Jelly Bean will probably be the last major update.

If you need your phone for job critical situations, seems best to stick with gingerbread for now.
No it's not
It seems that the version 5 KLP of Android will be optimized for older phones too...

you apparently forgot about FXP team... these guys can work miracles, too bad I sold my lovely arc s ;(
The rumors, according to the article behind the bold letters , seem to be true. It's logically for Google to optimize Android for cheap (not necessarily old) phones, having in mind that WP8 for example is really smooth on modest hardware.
But, Hell Yeah, I'm afraid you all are right.
Sony will not come back to us. Two years ago, I had an Xperia X8 and Sony stopped the development to 2.1 Eclair, letting all owners without the native possibility to move apps to SD card. They used the same expression: "SONY cannot guarantee a satisfactorily user experience". Useless to say that the geniuses from XDA developed versions far beyond Gingerbread.
But, hope remains always ...
