[Q] SuperOneClick not working - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all.. I just bought my Defy (standard, not plus) this afternoon.. played around with Eclair for a bit (it's not upgrading to froyo for some reason) and decided it was time to root cuz I've seen way too much about it on these forums and I want to OC it and try CM7
unfortunately step 1 isn't working for me.. I can't get SuperOneClick to work.
I've followed all the steps, I've installed the latest drivers and everything.. I've got SuperOneClick v2.3.3
When I run it with my Defy connected with USB Debugging turned on, when I press Root, it says a certain driver is not installed.. so I closed the app and reopened it but the same thing shows up.
one of the options that pops up is whether I'd like the app to forcefully set up the ADB thing or something so I clicked that, but even then it doesn't work.. any ideas?
I really need to OC it to 1 or maybe 1.2 GHz
and the reason I bought it today was because I had read a lot about rooting a defy being very easy

Which SBF did you try for Froyo upgrade that didn't work? What country are you from?

I haven't tried any SBF thing yet.. All I've done with my Defy so far (apart from installing some games) is hooking it up to my PC with the debugging on and running SuperOneClick, which is where the problem's taking place..
I haven't tried flashing anything or using 2ndInit or anything like that
Right now, I'm in India

I had to use SuperOneClick 2.2 (defy froyo and milestone eclair). 2.3 did not work. It is really important which rev. you use and newer does not mean it will work with your phone.
For example for xperia x 8 I had to use 1.5.5 to work. Just try different revisions

I use 2.1 version and it work flawlessly for me.
Try some different version if that works or try on some different computer.
Which operating system you using?
I've Win7 Ultimate x64 and it works without any issue as Win7 automatically downloads required drivers.

Aright then, I'll try 2.1 or some other version a bit later.. hope it works
Eclair looks terrible after seeing stuff like ICS
I'm using win 7 as well, so I'm pretty sure thats not the problem
on a side note, I have a Green lens Defy, and I've read in a lot of places that the cam doesn't work with ICS.. Is the situation any different now or will the cam never work for this lens with ICS?

I also have same Green lens defy.
Cam also works with ICS but with Froyo kernel only.

Okay, so I guess it worked.. I installed the Milestone overclock app and OC'd it to 1000 MHz (74 vsel) (whatever that means)
Shadowgun, which was working almost lag free earlier, started lagging a bit, haha
Guess I'll have to reboot or something and try again
*time to flash ICS*
EDIT: When I rooted, it didn't ask if I wanted to install busybox, nor did it ask for a reboot. Is that a problem?

74 is too high. Set it at 58

If I set it to 58, can I still clock 1ghz? What's the advantage of 58 over 74?

temp increases with increase in vsel (which is nothing but a factor of voltage)
Battery life decreases with increase in vsel
Stability of the system increases with increase in vsel

the more clock speeds, more vsel you need.
high clock speed+ low vsel= crashes / low stability
high clock speed+ high vsel=less crashes / ok stability
low clock speed + high vsel= very less probability of crashes / high stability
low clock speed+ low vsel=high to med crashes / low-normal stability
So basically, it is about what you want, and how you balance it.

I've clocked it at 1100 GHz at 58 vsel. Advantage of 58 over 74 is lower battery temp and longer life.

I've done this and everything's great right now
just one question.. ever since I installed cm9 my menu keys have stopped lighting up.. is that normal?
Btw is swype incompatible with cm9? I downloaded the beta but it doesn't work
And also does the latest version of opera mobile (not mini) work for you? On ics it crashes on startup

Backlight only turns on at certain light level. If you go into a dark room, buttons should be lit.
Opera mobile and Google Chrome don't work, because of the lack of HWA.
Don't know about swipe - I have never liked it, using SwiftKey X

I tried swiftkey.. its no different from the stock keyboard so I removed it
mx player stopped playing full length movies (it did in eclair). I'm guessing its the HWA problem here as well
Hope its fixed in an upcoming build

Swype beta works perfectly on my ICS defy. Did you performed all steps of swype installer?
I don't remember all steps now, but there was sg like choosing (checking box) swype, all settings and then choosing which android keyboard shall be used

[Q] [SOLVED] Huawei Impulse 4G AT&T Read-Only

Here are the details from under the battery:
Phone: Impulse 4G
Model: U8800-51
H/W: Ver.C
FCC ID:QISU8800-51
Here is the problem:
I attempted to root my phone using SuperOneClickv2.2-ShortFuse.
It said that it was successful.
Superuser lists several programs that have root access.
Using Root Explorer, I attempted to back up my wpa_supplicant file in /system/bin/.
It gives me an error "Warning- wpa_supplicant cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only."
I tap "OK", then i tap "Mount R/W" at the top of the screen, but it continues to say r/o and won't let me move/delete/rename/replace any files.
Any ideas?
I thought the file system might be on some kind of read-only media to prevent tampering, but that doesn't make sense because how would an OS update take when they finally release one? I'm not trying to flash my ROM. (yet) I am trying to modify a system file.
My apologies if this problem has already been posted. I searched for 2 or 3 hours last night, but I didn't find anything.
OK. Since no one can answer my problem with the current available data, i think it's time for new data.
I originally used Super One Click to root my phone (v 2.2) so I used that to "unroot" it. I then rooted it again using the same manner as the first time.
This time I copied the log.
Maybe someone can read this and see if I made a mistake?

Maybe try GingerBreak. It worked for me on the Froyo rom for the normal U8800, maybe it works for you too.

Thanks, I tried Gingerbreak, but couldn't even get it to do anything. I appreciate the suggestion, tho.
As I read from the debug code, I can see part of the code is from the GingerBreak, so it wouldn't work anyway. Another option is z4root, which didn't work for me, but it may work for you. I read that some of the earlier builds for U8800, some rooted their phones with it.
I'll try a different setting. Currently had it set on Auto for the exploit.
Thanks
Well, ZergRush made Root Explorer all chinese and wouldn't do anything.
psneuter made root explorer give me an error message in chinese, then it closed.
My problem was solved here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19846498&postcount=170
Possibly... Root Explorer is still in Chinese. Looking onto fixing that now.
Try using Z4Root. I rooted my U8800-51(AT&T Impulse 4G) using Z4Root and it worked without a problem.

Droid 2 on 621 refuses to root

I've been ditzing with a buddies phone for almost 3 hours now using every method I can think of to get this thing to root and theyre all failing. Short synopsis on each:
Pete's moto tools 1.07: fails on final step but log shows "permission denied" on each step
1-2-3 method: fails after running ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin by closing (or crashing) adb interface. have to reboot the computer to get any devices at all and it shows as "offline"
rageagainsttecage ON THE PHONE USING TERMINAL: crashes after ./rage*.bin, cannot re-open terminal without force-close unless I uninstall terminal and reinstall, and I'm back to square 1
z4root: fails, no idea why, crashes similarly to above method. phone must be rebooted or z4root reinstalled to be able to run again without FC
I'm about to try superoneclick but I'm not optimistic. Any ideas?

ive done all the same and had all the same issues. cannot root.
REALLY WISH I HAD LOOKED ONLINE BEFORE CLICKING UPDATE. FACK!!!!
would/could it work?
I've been reading on-line and apparently the Droid X also runs .621, I found a few references to a linux sbf that turns the phone into a .621 version of the Milestone X and can be rooted then flashed to a custom rom.. is there any chance that a similar work-around would work on the Droid 2?

[Q] Some Urgent Question about HTC Magic 32B (T Mobile) Please Help

I have htc magic 32B T mobile , i know its very old phone but i can only afford it so please help me about some questions:
I almost bricked my phone because i dont know much about Custom roms but happily i was successfull to make it working again by "RUU_Sapphire_T-Mobile_US_3.12.531.1_FRG83D_release_signed_4" that i downloaded from some site but now when was checking the features i was unable to get back into recovery mod, i mean restart phone and press and hold Power button+Home , instead of recovery mode it gives me a big exclaimation sign with android picture.
I googled alot for it but didnt find any correct result.
If this mode is not showing then it means i am unable to load custom rom or etc.
and the second thing please tell me what is stable rom available here that have android version 2.3.5 or high and also please give me a very basic tutorial about installing it.
Third and last question: when i try to root phone with SuperOneClick , it gives me error like this

I've tried everything for my defy xt555c straight talk phone running 2.3.7. through research i've found that the phone requires a patch to be a applied for the root to work.. however when using SUT it requires my phones SPC code. This is my current issue, i've tried calculators that apply a special algorithm to the ESN which produces the six digit code. I've tried ##data# then logcat to get the spc(although i think this is for msl?(msl might be same as spc?)) I've tried superoneclick and it gets to step 7 and locks up. All of the programs i've used either lock or or can't get permission..
I guess the real question is does anyone know how to accurately acquire the SPC code for the defyxt555c? any help would be greatly appreciated.
THANX!
BUMP- any information would be super greatly appreciated.
So turns out the spc and msl codes are not the same. The spc is a one time use used to program the phone. The msl is the code used to reprogram and this is the code i require.

How did you discover the SPC and MSL are different?
I have the Republic Wireless Defy XT 557, which I believe is quite similar to your device. Have been unable to obtain SPC/MSL.
I found it through google i will have to check my history.. as for your spc you can find calculators online and there is actually an app in the market that will do the same thing. Its called meid converter.. it will give you the spc.. but not the msl.. ive tested it on my other phone and its msl was diff than the spc. I havnt found a way to get the msl yet though.. i have been looking for a while.
My other phone is a galaxy precedent which i was able to get the msl using the alogcat method. That doesnt work with the motorola though.

My xt 555c is the first android I've owned, and I mistakenly thought so little on-board memory wouldn't be an issue since I could slap a large micro SD in it....
I'm running into the same problem as the rest. SuperOneClick, etc... don't work on the XT 555c. Something's missing. Not sure if it helps, but here's the log I get from SuperOneClick. I've noticed for many people it hangs on step 7. For me it stops at step 3.

I've now gotten the run-around from Motorola and straight talk. Basically the official stance is "if you were stupid enough to buy a phone with so little space, you're SOL."
It's a shame because aside from the idiotic lack of space (what engineer designed THAT?!?), it's a great phone. As it is though, it's useless to me if I can't increase the space by rooting it. Any suggestions on another decent phone that I can get?

Did you tell them that you were trying to root?
I explained that I was happy with the service, but needed to be able to modify the phone so as to extend the internal memory. The reply I got was that they don't even have the MSL because they never under any circumstances unlock the phones.
I know that no one has been able to successfully root the phone (or if they have, they are being quiet...curse them ), but has anyone successfully flashed to another OS, like Cyanogen?

There has to be something that can be done... i need to find one of these people who do this kind of thing and offer them money for a working option or something. The MSL is made by the service provider i am pretty sure. They take the meid and use their specific algorithm to produce the MSL this is my understanding anyways.

Hello, I recently got a Motorola droid pro (Android 2.3.4) and I'm looking to root it to remove some of the bloatware on it and stuff like that. I tried using SuperOneClick but it stalls on the step:
Shell rooting device...-Step #7 WaitForDevice
With the detail text being:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system > /data/local/tmp/output 2>&1
export TEMPRANDOM=50620
export PS1=END:$TEMPRANDOM;cat /data/local/tmp/output
mount: Operation not permitted
END:50620
I installed the most up to date drivers via pdanet and ran SuperOneClick as an admin. Anybody know why it stalls here? Also if there's a better way to root this device I'm up for trying that. Thanks in advance for any help. ^_^
Found something that worked. This tool worked for me using the Gimli exploit.
