USB_OTG - Help Please - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi Guys
I have suddenly started to notice a process called USB_OTG that is killing my battery. It is taking up to 90% of the charge and I don't know how to stop it. I have tried doing a android backup to a time that this wasn't causing an issue yet it is still there
I can't connect my device to my pc/mac to transfer files and most of the time it won't even recognise that I have plugged a charger in
Can someone please help as this is driving me insane

Turning off your phone, then on, should be enough to get rid of it. It's a known bug of the system, it goes berserk at times after using the USB connection.

I have had this for over a week where i have turned off, done a battery pull and still can't seem to shift the issue
is it possibly kernel related?

Just done full wipe and installed a rom i have never used before and still have the same issue. cant connect to usb, won't transfer data when debugging is on or off. does it sound like a warranty issue and should be put back to stock?
don't want to use odin and increase the counter though

gone back to stock and still having the same error. is my phone officially knackered?

Look into the USB receptacle in your phone. Is there dirt or are the pins twisted and in contact? From what you described, it might be that your Note thinks there is a USB device connected, and that might stem from some kind of contact from pins...

USB on the go mode is when your phone is trying to change from a USB "slave" to a USB "host".
A normal phone should always be in "slave" mode, that is when you plug it into your computer you can do kies and all that stuff.
If you plug in a special cable, your phone will detect this and try to go into "Host" mode where it can connect to a USB stick or a USB mouse.
This special cable works by shorting two of the pins on your USB connector together that normally aren't shorted.
So in short, with what you describe it appears that dust, corrosion, or debris or other hardware failure has caused the phone to incorrectly think those pins are shorted together when they are not.
Look at it under good light and magnification. Clean it with alcohol. Good luck.

everything looks fine, can't see any debris or damage on it. don't think the usb will be covered under warranty either looks like i may be phone less

If you are desperate and it is not covered by warranty, you should in theory be able to open up the phone and cut the trace / wire that leads from the ID pin back into the USB chip. You would lose OTG capability forever but it would solve your battery problem.
David

Why? USB OTG is an advertised feature, so I guess should be covered by warranty.

i've also run into this problem. Phone wouldn't be able to go to deep sleep after using usb otg. Turned the phone off and back on fixed it. Kind of annoying.
running franco 9 on checkrom 6

I had this problem as well. Cleaning and pushing pins were only temporary fixes for me. And it just got progressively worse after awhile. So I went back to the place I bought it and they sent it in for service. It was covered by my warranty apparently, one week later I got it back, fit for fight. Remember to go back to stock though

think it will be a warranty job. will have to send direct to samsung so hope it isnt away too long. will call them tomorrow as still wont charge when turned on and sometimes sits there saying its charging even with no usb in it

That is further evidence that USB is screwed up and should be covered by warranty. Good luck.

Not sure if this link will work since I'm a new member here, but you could try this :
add a http here: forumDOTxda-developersDOTcom/showthread.php?t=1329360. Disregard this link if you didn't use that method to root it though. As you might suckerpunch your phone into oblivion
Also, I cleaned the usb port with alcohol/Nail polish and a toothbrush to temporarily enable it to connect to my computer(Let it dry for at least 20 mins after). I am no expert at any of this though, so before you trust too much in my advice, you should go search around the forums for confirmation.

Any more ideas how i can unroot as my phone wnt connect to a PC via USB so need to do it all on the phone. Think I am screwed

[Q] usb debugging failed

USB debugging no longer activates on my phone. Activating it in settings/applications/development brings up the "Allow USB debugging?" permission window. However, no usb notifications appear, and the phone appears to be a dead device to any PC it is connected to.
This started when I accidently got into the download screen from the phone options popup. The display showed the yellow sign, android guy with shovel, and message warning not to turn target off. Phone was not connected to anything at the time.
Searching found a couple of threads indicating that a battery pull was safe to get out of it. Did same.
Since then, usb debugging (or usb anything) has been dead on this phone. Other methods of usb access (thru usb settings) have no effect either.
Tried the following...
(1) restore to my last backup rom.
(2) numerous reboots and battery pulls.
(3) mount/unmount sd card in cwm recovery
(4) clear caches
(5) changed pc's and cables (all worked before)
(6) reinstalled usb drivers on pc (worked before, didn't expect it to help since issue is at phone end)
As you can see, I'm running out of sticks to poke the horse with. Does anyone have any ideas?
Update: new kernel didn't help, either
Update2:
(a) Can't do a restore via odin, which won't detect the phone.
(b) Updated my adb (which I don't use much). adb devices command will not detect the phone via usb.
(c) Installed adbWireless which allowed me to push a stock nandroid backup to the phone. Restored that, usb is still dead.
(d) Restored back to my superdark rom, usb is still dead.
Head scratch: I'd blame hardware except that it seems to be between the settings and execution. If it was purely hardware, I'd expect to see the usual usb notifications. Regardless, it looks like I'll have to revert back to stock and let Verizon figure it out.
Update3:
(a) switched to the new AOSP rom. Nice, but no usb.
(b) switched back to superdark since I like my speakerphone and the AOSP seems to be on hold. Still no usb.
Resolution:
My apologies for not posting a resolution. My bad. After the first few days the post kind of fell off the radar and I stopped checking.
Short version...dirty usb port.
Details...after a week or so, I saw the usb icon flash in the notification bar for a few seconds when I plugged it in for a recharge. Hadn't seen that in a week, hope springs eternal!
A thorough cleaning of the usb port using a paper swab dampened with alcohol restored usb functionality. Not much dirt came out on the paper, but it must have been enough to probably bridge the contacts somehow.
At present the phone is fully functional. The original Verizon cable seems to be a little wonky. I have an aftermarket cable that works fine. It may be that the aftermarket cable did some physical harm to the contacts in the port, or the original cable is going bad (I had something very similar happen on my Omnia). Not sure.
I now use the original verizon cable only for charging at work and use the aftermarket cable for usb connecting at home.
Bottom line...if your usb goes dead as described in the op, carefully clean the port.
My thanks to all who responded...
Download screen shouldn't have harmed you.
You probably are well aware of this, but sometimes it's the simplest solution: Is your usb cable unplugged when you are trying to turn on USB debugging? It will not let you if you are plugged into a pc or mounted for some other reason. Make sure your file manager and any other rogue app is closed. Again, it does sound like you have tried all of this, just giving my best shot ar an answer.
Other then that... Has anyone else had this problem? I haven't seen it in this forum before.
The most general solution to any issue on these fascinates is to undo whatever you did to break it, it's just difficult sometimes to isolate what that event was.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
Thanks for the reply.
USB is unplugged when turning on debugging. I've also tried turning the phone on with usb plugged in.
The last thing I had done (before accidently activating the download screen) was to install SiMi Folder Widget. Needless to say, it went away with the rom restore.
Also used ATK to kill running processes before turning on usb debugging. Also verified that I still have root.
I've buggered the phone up before but have always been able to figure out a way back (with help from forum searches). This one's got me stuck.
Tonight I'll try to figure out if it can be odin'd back to stock and rebuild from there.
Again, thanks. All suggestions/advice are appreciated.
See op for steps taken to (unsuccessfully) solve this.
Can anyone advise how I can flash back to stock DI01 without using odin, since it won't detect the phone? I can push files to the phone via adbWireless but that's about it.
thanx in advance...
I dont know if you fixed it or not, but here is a stupid question. Are you using the cable that came with your phone? I have several cables that will only charge my phone and only the stock one enables data transfer. Hope this helps. Good luck

This may be my problem! I'm having the same similar effects. Although mine randomly shows the symbol but also says my usb is connected when it does. I've been trying to solve this for 2 weeks now! I hope this is the solution.

common problem
This must be a common problem because I've had the same issue. switched cables and viola, all good.
My exact problem solved:
USB debugging activated on phone but computer did not detect it at all, nothing what so ever. Not even on dial-up mode, or download-Odin (yellow triangle).
Drivers installed (Fascinated and Nexus for the hell of it).
Tried to ADB my into it both from windows 7 and MAC OS-X.
Hell I even tried a different USB cord.
I would get the USB debug icon in the status bar only when on windows7 machine.
I cleaned the phones USB port with the alcohol damped paper towel/tooth pick and the **** worked, first time.
Man I gotta thanks God for this site. I been ****ing with for 2 days.
Then this lil SOB acted as if nothing ever happen. I wanted to beat the hell out the lil ****er. But we are back friends now.
Thanks dude. This **** needs publicized more. I went through a few links before I found this.
I would and tell people to use something non-metallic and removed the battery beforehand. I did just to be safe.

No charge, no sync - loose MHL cable port.

Only had mine 3 weeks and its broken already. I have been using a desktop charger and have not been forcing it in at all, not once, I have always been very gentle inserting it it, anyway it no longer charges, it looks like the connectors have pushed themselves back so they are not flush anymore and thus no longer connecting to charge or sync.
Not happy about this at all, I had my desktop charger for my HD2 for 18 months with no problems at all, this suggest a very weak connector.
!!! BE CAREFUL !!!
Going to call in at Phones4you and see if they will swap it, I don't hold out much hope though.
Wow bad luck man, but really you don't need the F word to express your frustration.

was it an official desktop charger or 3rd party?
DO a factory reset using code *2767*3855#
(please not this will wipe everything including built in memory, so do backup before you proceed. Backup possible by moving content of internal memory to SD card by copy paste in file manager)
I had a problem when my phone stopped charging after I upgraded firmware, It would also launch Connected to computer screen when it wasnt . Thought its dead.
Did factory reset using this code and its working flawlessly ever since. Seems to be some kind of bug which happens out of nowhere as 2 people I know have experienced this after upgrading to KE2.

I was going to ask exactly the same thing...
I think the OP means that the micro usb receptacle has come away from the board and has been pushed back into the body of the phone. I hope this is not going to turn out to be a common problem as it's something that seemed plague to the Nokia N900 and it took ages for Nokia to acknowledge a design/production fault.
great advice, now it wont boot at all, just goes round in circles....
F**cked.....
anyone got any ideas?
Hi, the charger isnt really the issue, i haven't had any problems inserting the phone into the charger, ie no resistance which suggests to me it was week or loose and has gradually pushed it self back over the last 2 weeks since I have had the charger. If thats the case it would have done this with any charger or cable.
Just spoke to phones4you, they are going to exchange it for me, they didnt even grumble after I told them what happened which I thought was odd, heading off now to pick it up.
Will be interesting to see if your wifi is any better on the new phone stoolzo. Maybe you could let us know. Thanks.

i had this issue when running custom kernels. somehow doesnt happen with stock.
issue happens like this:
u go to bed while charging
u wake up and the phoneis off or very hot with battery and temperature warning
u reboot and it doesnt reboot, doesn't boot, just goes in circle battery display/reboot cause it doesnt seem to charge neither have enough power to boot.
removing battery + cable then putting both back = it boots again and charge normally

Yeah, did all the usual things, I have bricked phones before and always managed to turn them around but we have no CMR to flash anything from ROOT/SD so when it wouldn't boot after a factory reset I knew I was in trouble
The MHL port being loose was the tell tale sign of a fault as I hadn't misused it at all. When I compared it to my new phone I got today it was defo a little further back, just enough to prevent it connecting.
Good old phones4you, fault report to phone exchange in under an hour, impressive.
Just in case the charger had anything to do with this I am going to get rid, dont think it did but I don't want to risk it.

Phone stuck on USB/charging... very weird

Hey there. I have my Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) for about a month, and since a couple of days ago it has been behaving very weirdly about USB and charging.
First of all, the phone thinks it has USB connected at all times. When I go to the settings menu try to enable mass storage it says USB is already connected, even though it isn't!!!
Sometimes when I start the phone it goes to that USB Kies screen and says "connected", when absolutaly no cables are connected AT ALL!!!
When I turn the cell off, remove the battery and plug it back in, without turning the phone on, the recharging battery icon appears, but blinks with a drained battery icon with a yellow exclamation sign and a thermometer which I sincerely have no idea what that means.
It also takes ages to recognize the power charger or when I really connect the USB cable. And finally, when I take them off, it also takes a while to "perceive" they're off and remove the charging lightning from the battery icons.
PRETTY PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME OUT, as I don't have time to take the phone to service, and didn't really want to do that
Thanks!!!
This has also happened to me and loads of other SGS2 users! Although usually it only happens sporadically and not constantly. It seems that it's a bad soldering job or dust/dirt has gathered in the microUSB port. You might be able to fix it, if you're *really* careful.

Last night my phone wouldn't even start charging, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. With the smallest screwdriver I could find, I carefully 'lifted' the tiny PCB in the USB jack while blowing in at the same time. Sure enough, some sand particles fell out, and I haven't gotten carmode'd in nearly 13 hours now. Previously it would do it once every 15 minutes. So far so good, it seems.

You can't talk on plural when you only point out one thread. And I've read that, but it isn't the same as my phone doesn't go in "car mode".
My phone's problem only resembled a problem JaX3RiR briefly mentioned in the middle of the thread.
I tried googling it before posting anything anywhere, but couldn't find anything useful.
Please don't try to look like a smartass like that and embarrass yourself. If you got nothing to add to the thread, it's best if you sit out of it. It's much more appreciated when helpful people like JaX3RiR post...

Thanks mate, I sent mine today as well... I hope they act the same with me, as I'm afraid customer service around here always tries to incriminate the user not to use the warranty...

I'm pretty sure you have the same problem. Sometimes Vlingo starts, sometimes phone thinks its charging, when trying to boot it shows battery image and won't boot, can boot only recovery and do restart from there.
Get of the high horse when people are trying to help you.
Are you sure you didn't connect USB cable upside down or bended USB port with the cable?
I have no idea what Vlingo is, and obviously I didn't connect the USB cable upside down. I don't think I bended the port with the cable since it still recognizes the cable for charging or booting and going directly into Kies mode, for example.
I am not on any high horse when people try to help me, as you could see my response towards the guys above. Your post wasn't sounding helpful at all, you were just sounding like "hey, you dumass noobie, don't open a new thread for yourself, check the forums first".
By the way, I also took a look at that thread you posted before posting mine, but I have no idea what is "car mode" on my phone...
Sorry if I sounded rough. I thought it is similar issue, so I posted link to longer thread. I had this issue myself.
Peace. Let us know what the service say .
This happened to me one week ago while on holiday....that temp indicator while charging plus the other stuff you mention....

Hello,
Had the same problems aswell, only mine had a bunch of other problems aswell:
When I shut down my mobile it restarts itself and then shows a yellow exclamation mark with an tempgage. Only way to turn on my phone is to connect it with the charger, turn of my phone again, remove the charger and then the phone turned itself on again but without the temp gage.
My phone also thinks its charging when it is not, and when I am actually charging it, its not charging.
Also my PC does not recognize my phone so I am not able to update it.
I have also sent my phone for a repair, I will keep you guys posted.
greets from the netherlands
Yep, mine only got fixed by going into service. It got its mainboard warranty switched.
T- Mobile sent me a replacement phone
They seemed to know the symptoms when I explained what was happening
Same fault for me. Mainboard replaced, works fine now.

How did you guys get it fixed? Did you have to ship the phone out somewhere? How long did you have to wait to get it back? What was the process?
Thanks.
Mine is going to be repaired in two weeks.
I was the 8th SGS2 since tuesday which came in the repair center.
The repair guy said it is a manifacturing fault.
The phone gets hots, and outside temperature is cold, so it makes moisture in the phone.
This cause the phones power management to get fu up (SGS2 has a small battery inside of it, and that gets fu up). Only fix is replace hardware, but 9 of 10 times Samsung gives the fault to the customer. They say it has water damage and can't be fixed in warrenty...
I'm going to write a huge article about it, and I hope it will get published by a lot of site's soon. Phones he admitted having the problem: SGS1, SGS2 and SGSN.
I charged my GS2 2x by USB and it's discharged faster than by the sector
The USB power isn't enough for charge up the GS2 correctly
Are you guys suffering from rapid battery discharging, i have all of the above symptons but my battery drains within hours...I`ve even bought a brand new battery off ebay that is exacly the same issues... I`d like to send it back to O2 but i`ve rooted and flashed custom firmware...

Big voice talk problem and car mode notification

Ok so maybe I spoke too soon. Yesterday I was telling my brother that the Note is the most reliable phone I've ever owned.....then....
I started having issues with charging. My Note would not charge, then it would change after several resets. It would charge, then stop, then start again etc etc....making a lot of beeping noises.
Now, it seems to be charging, but Voice talk keeps loading, and I've turned off the home key activation option. I also get the notification icon saying to disable car mode.
I really hope someone can help, thanks in advance.
kris
Great, now it's not charging, again!
Actually when I get the notification issue from Voice talk, the battery starts charging for a second until the notification disappears and stops charging....
Now factory reset my phone again and charging worked while restarting and restoring but when loaded the voice talk app keeps coming up and going off, so I have a black flashing screen constantly....gonna try restarting/reset without restoring...
Hi leicashot, this shouldn't happen. Which firmware version are you currently running? I recommend installing the latest LB1 stock, unless you have AT&T Note.
Some users have reported similar symptoms when there was dust in the mini usb port. Try cleaning the device, and if all else fails, you should send it back to Samsung for repair.

I'm using the latest 2.6.35.7. Any idea how to try clean the port? Definitely seems like something is wrong with the port....
No charging issues for me but my Note started doing the driving mode thing at about 3am today and has been doing it on and off all day!
Exceedingly annoying!
are you trying to charge from a PC or a wall outlet?
I usually charge via mains but it wasn't charging or even plugged in at the time this started happening. It was just sitting on the table by my bed. I even powered it off but it switched itself back on!
Here is how to fix it.
Take out the battery and take a plastic edge like credit card or even a regular tiny small screwdriver and push the pins (strip) inside the phone. I mean, to take the screw driver and push in the pins back inside the phone, in inside the usb charging port. your problem will disappear. make sure your plastic flexible after-market phone cover has a big enough hole at the bottom to allow you to connect a usb cable easily to the phone, or else, cut open a bigger hole on the cover.
Good luck
so here it is again: you have to push in the usb port pins back inside the phone, straight in without bending them. you can also buy a usb charging port from ebay for 22 bucks and change it yourself in 10 minutes. its a hardware problem so stop resetting your phone.

Indeed. I remain convinced this is not hardware and is software related. The main reason for my thoughts there are that as well as the driving mode thing it seems that some piece of software is trying to load up as it asks me if I want to run whatever it is in either Clock or TuneIn Radio. Bizarre. Also, the first time it happened it was bang on 3am. Everytime I turned the phone off it would come back on exactly two minutes later.
The second night it started doing it bang on 1am.
I'm waiting to see what time it starts tonight.
It doesn't (so far) do it at all during the day.
Going to give it a couple of days to see what happens then go figure out how to go back to a factory ROM rather than the the Rocket 22 I have on here now.

I've been having the same problem for a few days now.
I've just pushed the pins in with the corner of my charging cables connector and the problem stopped.
There was also a notification that flashed up saying something like: USB connector or device removed.
Voice talk is still managing to launch itself, even after pushing the pins in. I'm on stock LB2 so maybe I've finally found a reason to flash a GB rom?
Happened to me yesterday. Got a toothbrush and cleaned usb port on phone. Now seems ok

Good luck
so here it is again: you have to push in the usb port pins back inside the phone, straight in without bending them. you can also buy a usb charging port from ebay for 22 bucks and change it yourself in 10 minutes. its a hardware problem so stop resetting your phone.

this method solve my problem.

USB connection not seen at all, in system, fastboot or recovery,

Hi all,
Have just started to connect my device so i can pull the patched boot image for my thread and it won't see the computer, tried on several laptops and nothing, no adb, no fastboot.
It charges just fine but does not show the android usb system notification.
Really annoyed by this as i'm kind of stuck.
I'm on 7.7 but on a custom ROM / Evo X 5.9.1, doesn't look like anyone else has this issue besides me, have seen the odd user complaining about the same thing but haven't seen any fixes come up], if anyone has any ideas then i'd be grateful to get your two cents.
Will test MSM but it's not looking good, fearing a return to oneplus as i do have a good unit with none of the issues anyones ever listed like green screen and overheating problems.
It's usually me helping others but this time i need you guys help
Check USB cable / clean the Charging port? sometimes it helps.

Aye I've cleaned it up mate.
Tried different cables, I think EDL mode is working.
Means I could maybe return to OOS but it wouldn't let me back up..
Shame, I'm just downloading MSM now... Really annoyed..will give the usb socket another clean

Yea I'm dreading it being hardware. Never had this issue on OOS.
I think it may be Evo X but I don't know.
Bad luck I guess
Cheers anyway.
So MSM did indeed work, it's booting now, obviously couldn't back up any of the info on the device so i'm super annoyed at that but so long as usb connectivity works then i'll be happy with that.
USB Connectivity does NOT work now so i CAN connect to EDL mode but not normal usb conenctivity.
Anyone have any ideas???
Cannot root, install anything via ADB or even delete apps via ADB. Shocking problem to have man
I'm RMA'ing my phone, just getting it set up now.
Very painful process, they absolutely need the purchase order for warranty, things have changed with 1+
3-10 days apparently, used to be 5 when i've sent it in the past.
On connecting a USB hub i can read USB sticks and i can control my phone with an xbox pad??
Am i missing something? How is all this working yet i can't mount my phone?
Best bet, probably you broke the charging port. did you by any chance use like force usb charging like that?

I did use the force USB charging yes.. wishing I hadn't now..
I also connected to a usb-c to hub to connect a screen.
Issues kind of started after that.
Physically I haven't damaged it from movement. But could be from the forced charging
UPDATE:
Erm ok this is confusing???
I just connected my phone to a charger that is clearly not rated for it, in the hope it would shock the device, i then connected my phone and made a cup of tea, when i got back my phone showed me this (screenshot attached)
??? Lol what the hell? I've already booked my RMA lmfao
anyway, i shall keep an eye on it, i'll thoroughly test it and get it back up and running.
Strange, very strange.
