[Q] What to do when apps just stoped behave properly??? - Nook Touch General

Hi guys ... I'm not sure, whether it's just me as a person or my NOOK, but with every new thing I try, I get something strange :
My apps (Market, Youtube, Opera) stopped working properly :
- market doesn't search any more
- Youtube wont start
- Opera starts, load it self and after 1 sec it just stops working/jumps to home screen.
What I did was changing the uImage from NST-kernel v0.1. Tried it but it seemed like that multitouch didn't work - just seemed - it did what was proved by angry birds that I've installed just to test it.
But since then NONE of those three apps mentioned above worked properly. Even when I restore my backup (that I did few weeks ago right after I've followed minimaltouch) ... this behaviour still continues. After deleting all the partitions and restoring the backup I still have the SAME PROBLEM ?!
How is that possible even after backup - and not changing the uImage again ??? What could have caused it ??? Any idea how to get rid of it ??? Thanks for any advice.
My NOOK is 1.1 - I didn't update to 1.1.2 yet.

Hi, are you shure you haden't this problems before? I'm also experiencing problems with the market search, so I use this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.firezenk.msplus
Regarding Opera, how have you installed it? If it got installed by one of the rooting tools it is missing some libraries. Uninstall it and reinstall it directly from the market.
Regarding multitouch, have you edited "/etc/permissions/required_hardware.xml" like it is described in the thread?

Thank you for your fast response mali100.
1. now you made me unsure. As I did have "searchmarket" installed as well, but I'm fairly sure, that I've installed the ES file Explorer and Opera directly from the MARKET.
2. Directly from the market (I was using CWM minimal touch, which I think doesn't include Opera). Even after uninstalling and installing again from Market - the fault persist.
3. No, I didn't do this. I thought that after "arkusuma" changed the uImage, then it wasn't needed. But Angry Birds worked (zoom) - I'll do that in the next try as I did a factory reset and will go through the whole process(minTouch CWM) again to see, whether youtube will work !?!?!
Still it's a big mystery to me why this stayed like this after restoring ?!

I think the search issues may be related to googles changes to the market, now known as google play store. Market search worked for me, but I decided to make a clean start with 1.1.2 and used MinimalTouch and since then my Market doesn't search, but as mentioned before, this could be also the result of changes made by google.
The MinimalTouch I used had Opera Mobile integrated, and it showed the exact same behaviour that you described, but a reinstall solved this for me.
Mulitouch works on my device (and on at least on other from which I know) with my NST-kernel v0.1.

When things don't work, adb logcat is a good start.

adb logcat is a good start.

Would a logcat from an app running on the nook help as well ??? I still didn't get to ADB ... its one of my later homework after I'll format my laptop.

Besides the hassle of installing the Android SDK, ADB is easy.
I guess that you could write an app or script to capture the log but it's hardly worth the effort.
Things not starting will definitely show up in the log.
The intents system is fairly complicated.
Besides, when you do get ADB working you can test stuff like:
Code:
am start -d file:///sdcard/start.htm -t text/html

Well ... I did a lot of stuff :
1. unregistered the device / factory reset
2. apply minimal touch from the begging. As it is a 2 step process - in the first process Youtube works fine. But after the second process the first app I run was Youtube = NOT working. I've installed Opera and same problem ... just loads and as soon as it should picture the first welcome page, it turns back to HOME screen.
3. I got upset - use MiniTool Partition Wizard to wipe all the partitions, erased everything on the Nook by writing "0" through the whole nook ... and then write the backup image of my nook, when I first got it (untouched).
4. Used minimal touch again ... and YOUTUBE not working, Opera jumping to HOME screen ?!?!
How is this possible ??? Is it that by wiping the whole partitions and erasing the Nook there is still something that is not touched ??? (like when you have Swype, do a factory reset, then you can't type as you are missing keyboard ???)

uninstall opera and reinstall it from the market, or try opera mini.

Forgot to do that = worked for Opera Mobile ... Opera MINI will not load (but now I don't care with Mobile running)
Thanks Mali100 for repeated suggesting (reminding) of reinstalling. Thank you.
PS : Having found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553908&highlight=market+search) where RubenRybnik describes similar problems.

I had the same problem with youtube. I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it with adb push and now it works again.

hi all ,
I am also facing the same prob. My opera Mini starts and then crash ............
But I am able to make market search.
I uninstalled the OPERA and installed again many times, but nothing changed ..........
any solutions.......

Mini still doesn't work for me, but mobile does.
It is quite interesting that you can do the search on market ?! I'm wondering what you have different then the rest of us ?

[Troubleshoot Discussion] all Android Market problems here!

i am coming across from a rooted G1, i had about 160 apps i have managed to get most restored with mybackpro but have had market issues since i first signed in.
Apps when downloading continue to show as downloading even after they are installed, is this just a syncing delay, I know I had this with my G1 at times when switching between roms and it usually fixed it self after a few days.
If this is the case is there anything I can do to try and fix this myself, its very annoying as the whole market is app is slow.
Error opening market.
Hi,
The Internet browser on my Galaxy S I9000 opens all web pages on both, GPRS and WiFi networks. However, the following applications give me errors-
1. Market - "Server unavailable. Please try again later". For both, GPRS and WiFi networks
2. Talk - It simply shuts down without showing any dialog box on both networks.
3. Maps, Gmail, Mail, Samsung Apps - Works only on WiFi and not GPRS
I do not have a 3G network in my region yet.
Since market doesn't open; I can not download anything.
Kindly guide me with this. I am more concerned about [1] and [2].
Thanks !

Market Fix JF2 not working
Hi,
I tried everything, but its not working. I changed the build.prop (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7309462&postcount=162) wiped the cache and app cache, but still not full app catalogue in the market...
Can anyone help me?
A lot of them do, some mess up but devs are usually fast in tweaking the app to work with froyo
Upgraded to JM2 and now certain market apps missing
Hi, i'm pretty sure i'm in the right section, anyway, I upgraded to firmware JM2 and now there seems to be the odd app missing in market, not specifically paid ones.
For example myplayer is not there, is there a fix available for this or has the app just dissapeared(could anyone verify?).
Many Thanks

Market Problem
Hey,
i can find all apps on Market but can't download any of them.
If i press install it says in German: "Download wird gestartet..." means more or less in english:"Download starting..." it gets stuck on this message.
I used JM2 and OneClick LagFix 2.0 market wasn't working. so i decided to reflash and don't use oneclick lagfix, but nothing.
Then i flashed JM5, bit it still doesn't work.
I also tried another googlemail account, but nothing..
Anyone has a idea? I can't even restore my backups, since i can't download titanium backup from market lol.
This has happened to me today too! Maybe it is problems with the market servers.. :/ Now I am stuck without any applications until it is fixed.
I have the exact same problem and i have also tried a factory reset, if i find a solution I will let you know.

[Q] Xoom WiFi Root 3.2 Post Install issue

OK I performed the install per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165998 and have read every single post as of about 5 minutes prior to writing this.
Everything went perfectly fine. Installing over a stock 3.1, except for rooting. I'm not completely new to this... not a master either. I've rooted my Atrix with every official update, and rooted my dad's Verizon Incredible, I think that's the name, and installed Cyanogenmod 7.
MY problem is I can't open any "links." In either gmail or e-mail clicking on a good URL and get it to open in the stock browser, Opera or Firefox (it prompted me before the update). The screen just dims and nothing. I tap the screen and the screen "undims." This also happens when I download a pdf in Firefox and try to open it. If I use Astaro File manager I can open the pdf with out any issues. It appears to be related to the browsers only so far.
I've already performed a restore missing apps and system data with Titanium Backup Root.
Do I need to clean Dalvik cache? Do a factory wipe? Hopefully something less drastic...
Any help or pointer to resources I missed are appreciated.
P.S. I did try posting on the developer thread, and I can't post. Since I'm not experienced enough to be of much help and I prefer researching and learning without asking questions previously asked and answered.
Checked Defaults...
I just tried settings--->applications--->manage applications---->pick your app and clear defaults? No default set for the Browser, Firefox, Gmail or Opera.
CWM Cache Partition Wipe
Sorry for multiple posts I'm trying to troubleshoot my problem...
The problem still exists after clearing the cache partition with CWM.
Removed Opera
No change except I've noticed it is faster since I cleared the cache.
Removed Firefox
Now the builtin browser works!
Reinstalled Opera
Initially the same issue... and then the option to select between the Browser or Opera!
Second try the selection box appeared quickly!
Restored Opera data via Titanium Backup and all still appeared well.
Rebooted same issue... Uninstalled and reinstalled again. No change.
Rebooting...
Redo
Uninstalled Opera.
Used CWM to clear the cache partition.
Reinstall Opera.
Reinstall Firefox.
And I'll post this before my session times out. I hop this may help someone else someday.

You must have missed a post on this topic --default app picker--and someone's solution. I think I saw it in the development section. The solution was to make sure that auto rotate was set to on, and then make the screen redraw the grayed out app default picker screen by rotating the Xoom. They said to do it for each app that was causing a problem. Sounds crazy, but it seemed to work. Look for the post, or just try it. It can't hurt.
Working... Why
Working now and survived a reboot without breaking.
I haven't restored any data. :-(
Anyone know why or where I can look to try and figure out why. How about if I can recover some of the application data selectively?

[Q]Android Market issue with buying apps.

Hello!
It's my first post so I hope everything I write here is in correct place. I wanna add that I was searching for similar threads so I think I didn't miss anything. My problem is that:
I registred at Market with my old GMAIL account, and I can download any free apps but when I wanna buy something and I press to buy for example 0.69p button I see next page and instantly message appears that: "Error has occured, please try again." I tried through my PC, I went to market and buy something, I add card etc everything happen correctly I even have my application on phone without doing anything, but still after many reboots the problem isn't solved. I have to add that I live in UK and installed CM7 today so maybe I have to update something or so. (Tried restart.)
Thank you kindly,

are you using the new market/ what lcd_density are you using?
Well I don't even know how to update Android Market, and I just use one provided with software after installation. I downloaded from Market LCD Density for Root app and when I run It I see that default is 240, so I think this is my density, otherwise I don't know how to check it if it's wrong.
Thanks.
Edit:
Sorry I am blind I didn't provide information of ROM, it's: TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 Nightly v3.7.3[2.3.7][A2SD][tytung r12.4v3]
use market 3.1.5. I have also this issue after using market 3.2
Can I ask how to do it ? Since I found 3.1.5 apk file but it is impossible to overwrite it or even remove higher version of market. I don't know if it matters but when I try to install for example themes etc through clockwork I also have this issue:
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported.
Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5.
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages.

I'm assuming that many people do have market working on the Typhoon build, and therefore there must be something wrong with my set up....
if everyone had to downgrade market surely the typhoon thread would be loaded with comments on it!
So I'm tempted to just go for a full blank and reinstall...task 29, reinstall CWM clear out caches and dalvik cache from CWM, reinstalled Typhoon and see....
trouble is I'm not sure if that really clears everything, and might make it work....so some advice on getting it right would be appreciated.....as it takes time to get it all set up again, as I'd assume best not to use any backed up info/data/settings from Nandroid or titaniam in case what ever is causing the problem gets restored......
Cheers again for any advice
K
So I have tried clearing caches from ROM manager, CWM, rebooting....
I can see this question asked in the Typhoon thread, at least twice with no answer (I can't yet post there).
BTW I can buy Apps from Market on the PC and it sucesfully installs on the HD2...so I think my accounts stuff is all fine.
So I guess the info I'm looking for if a specific fix is not known is "how to do a real and total wipe" - I'm confused by what Task29 does, and what I need to do to "blank" the SD card.....which I assume I should also do?
Any hints/steps?
or even any idea of if a total blank will help?

I wrote this on another thread I created.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20370071#post20370071
Hello all okay so I have another issue I ran into with Tytung's ICS ROM for the HD2.
When I go into the Marketplace I am able to download free apps and/or apps I have previously purchased but when I go to purchase a new app I get the error: "An error occurred. Please try again". I am able to purchase it online and it will send to the phone and download, I am able to purchase apps on my Motorola Defy running CM7, I have even tried wiping the the phone data & cache and wiping dalvic and re-installing but this still didn't work. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Hope you can help.
I had this same issue with Tytungs Nexus ROM, but I also had other issues where software switches would be changed e.g. mobile data etc.
When the latest update arrived I decided to do a fresh install, task29, radio, MAGLDR, format SD, the works.
Now the market purchase works perfectly, it was probably one crummy corrupt bit somewhere in the phone but couldn't find it.

How do you install and use Google Play?

I rooted my nook today and no matter what I try, using Opera Mini, I cannot get any google apps to install. I also cant figure out how to add a device to google apps. Since the Market app never works for anyone this seems to be the only way to install anything but there are no forums mentioning how to install it. I would appreciate some assistance. Thanks.
no one here knows the answer to this? i'm shocked no replies yet.

Guyman2,
Depending on the rooting method you used, there is way to install gapps, which includes market (google play - they are compatible in use, nothing being left). Check it on the proper post here in the development forum!

To more succinctly state the problem:
How can you get APKs out of Google Play without loading your personal device with a load of junk from Google?
I've got Google Maps on my Nook right now and every time I turn my back it's trying to do something (when not running).
Renate,
Gotta live with that. That's the price of having market (gmail always on the background, etc), but it helps the system runs a little bit better (apps upgrade!).
Guyman,
Look on the thread related to touchnooter, and probably there will be an option to add gapps to your system. Usually the 1st post show you all the options.
Have the same problem - is there a way to install market only?
What I'm going to do is install on my phone, extract it from the phone, then load onto the Nook and delete what's left over! Madness, I know.
A nicer way for me would be to install into a virtual machine and do that. Anyone know if that's possible? Possibly even with Android-x86??
I don't like market in this sense. It's a problem with all Android devices as far as I can see. Market is a bit of a problem in this regard.
I'm not sure about the problem here, but, I can confirm that, I rooted my NST with Touchnooter and market is working fine, I downloaded several apps from market and, I also installed some apps trough Google Play Store from my PC directly to the NST.
For me Market search didn't work after following MinimalTouch so I had to use the SearchMarket app from Appbrain. After this now I can search and install anything but still can't click the notifcations, OperaMini crashes back to the ADW desktop, same for Browser too after clicking a link in Google.
edit:
for Renate re: Maps out of control. Yes, I noticed too that it comes out of the background and wastes battery. 2 ideas: 1) Freeze it when not in use. You can use a Widget from Titanium or AppQuarantine for quicker launch 2) use something 3rd party
I also suggest using a different account for the Nook to any other Android devices you have to keep things separate and clear since the NST is not recognised by Play.
For a bare-bones root with an appstore, tinynoot ought to work.
I cobbled it together for the glowlight but all the parts are from the established NST environment - clockwork, su, busybox, adw, button savior, nook touch and nook color tools.
I include the Amazon appstore, which of course is also an app that likes to be always on, but none of the gapps because the framework for the glowlight stuff hasn't been looked at yet.
The install scripts are based on minimal nooter, which is CWR based file and directory creation.
I didn't include a modded uRamdisk because I find that adb wireless is enough on its own to let me use wifi adb (dont' recall if I've used usb ADB but I suspect it would work, in assocation with nook color tools) - I can shell in via ADB and just need to type su to get superuser.
Downloads and longwinded instructions are up at

You could format and use one of my minimal zips instead of the full ones, they had only the neccesary apps and libs for Gmail (manual sync) and "Market" to work correctly, nothing more, nothing less, no maps, etc.
Now everything is a bit outdated, as I said, I'll work on this again and update the zips etc.

[Q] Adding browser back to [or fixing] a rooted Nook Simple Touch

Sorry for the total noob question, but here goes. I have rooted my NST, using the following instructions: http://tinymicros.com/wiki/NOOK_Simple_Touch_%28NST%29_Rooting_For_Practiscore Forgive the external link, I just wanted to be clear on where I am at.
If this isn't acceptable, apparently the source of the info is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and I used the "the 'Normal + Xorzone's mods + adb Wifi' build "
Practiscore works flawlessly and my nook does what I need it to do. Now I have been thinking that it would be cool to be able to surf the web or at least be able to use the internet over wifi to load apps without having to load it on the SD card manually.
Right now, when I open the browser, it will actually open www.google.com when I set it to the home page but then crash whenever I try to do anything - even just clicking on the search box. The fact that it will actually open google, tells me my connection is working, but either the root process broke the browser, or something else is wrong. I can also open the market and get it to show me some apps, but it won't let me search or surf to any app. Searching just hangs and displays nothing.
I've tried searching but I haven't had any luck in picking the proper search terms to get an answer, and for some reason there is a script running wild on this page that refreshes it every 2 seconds interrupting what I am doing. That problem is probably on my PC, but firefox is what I have.
Ok, I got some things to install by d/l'ing the APK's directly to the SD card on a PC. I still haven't gotten the app store to work, or google.
The app store search will not work on your nook touch, the only way to install apps are either sideloading them or installing them wirelessly using google play on your computer.
You may want to use Opera Mobile instead of the basic browser, it would be easier than getting the stock one working.

Ok, this thing is just not working, everything I try in the market or using the browser just crashes. I downloaded the opera mini, but I didn't get an apk, so I have no idea how to install the extracted files. Most of the apk's I have found to put on here don't work either and just crash. I cant even get hangman or a crossword to load for pete's sake...
Did you root it to run Practiscore on?
If not, I'd suggest restoring your backup, upgrading to 1.2.1 firmware, then using NookManager with NTGAppsAttack (see the Nook Touch Android Development Forum here on xda). That worked just fine for me. But I don't need to run Practiscore.

Yes, the link in the OP was what I used.
1. NTGAppsAttack - working google play
2. use SeachMarket.apk to look for APK's in Google play.

3. Use Opera Mobile instead of Mini.
4. To manually install .apk (without using ADB)
- put it on your uSD.
- open it using Relaunch or any other file browser that you use.

You sir are a genius. The searchmarket and Opera mobile WORK!!
Now all I have to figure out is how to get rid of those extra apps [that suck and don't work]
Oh and maybe a pdf reader that works...
..and is the screen supposed to go all wonky for a second whenever I do anything? Or is there a new video driver?
