hey guys, Just got my self a samsung focus i917. I have a question though
I started the phone for the first time with out a memory card. No I have put a sandisk micro SD card but it is not getting recognised. I also did a hard 3 button reset but still the memory card is not recognised. Any ideas as to what I can do?
Also is the memory card recoverable?
And help appreciated.
Thanks.

How much GB you see in Settings/About? If you see around 8 GB then most likely the card is faulty. Another reason you don't see the card is a faulty memory slot assembly.
I've build the Memory Card section in the Focus Wiki by reading the whole memory card thread so I can tell you that if a card isn't recognized it's most likely the card is damaged. But, it might not be, might just be totally incompatible.
Now, if it's not faulty, and the card is actually good (there are some chances), it should be okay as the phone didn't see it and thus didn't "lock" it.
To make sure, either format it in a Nokia Symbian phone (Series N or Series E - eg N9x: N95, N97 or E7x: E71 etc) that supports microSD memory cards or in a camera.

I re-inserted the card and formatted my phone again and it worked! the GB has gone up accordingly. I guess the connection of the phone was not right. Thanks for your help.

The data from my SD card became partly unreadable, some prgms could not be started and when looking at the root folder of my card I found some items named like ç!é”è((é§éç. Putting the card out and back in didn’t help, only a soft reset did the job. All data was still intact. This thing happened twice untill now. I use a Sandisk 1GB card.
Has anyone had this problem before? I remember reading about the same problem on a forum but couldn't find the posting.
I also experienced the same problem
I had this problem before. When I pulled my Sandisk 1 GB Micro SD and pushed it back in, the System did not recognize my Memory Card. I did it several times and suddenly it came back again.
The trick I used was pushing the Memory upward (against the back of the phone) until the memory was not completely inserted. Roughly about 1/10 of the memory sticks out of the memory slot
I believe this is a major hardware problem with the Memory Slot.
I have had this problem with my 2GB miniSD on my MDA Compact- the first time i had no choice but to re-format the card and start over but second time, re-inserting the card solved the problem.
May be something to do with the card not getting proper contact.
It doesn't work at all anymore!
I've had the same problem with my 1gb SD card since I bought it 2 years ago. It's crap, because copying a movie for instance through the phone (MDA compact) takes forever.
Now I reformatted it, and copied some stuff to it through my card reader. But after putting it back into my phone, the card now is not even seen at all by my phone, and putting it back in my PC doesn't work either... now it's not recognised anywhere anymore...
Anyone, now how to get this fixed?!
Thx!

Try using this utility (or similar) to format your card from a card reader:
http://www.sdcard.org/Downloads.aspx I've used it many times on various cards and seems to do the trick.

Hmmm, thx for hint, but that didn't work either. Since the drive isn't recognised, so does this tool... weird enough the adminstrative tools in windows (drive managament) does see a 1gb drive, but assigning a new drive letter causes an error.... damn... looks like I'll be buying a new SD card.
Does anyone know which brands/types (I now have a 1gb Kinston) have less problems with this, so I can copy files to and from my card though my card reader instead of my phone, without srewing my card up?
Edit: Ha! I formatted my SD card with my digital camera! Leaving just the problem of not being able to copy files to my card through my cardreader...
My device switches on by itself and then crashs with the screen on, it is not possible to access any thing and the only thing it responds to is to do a soft reset.
The only difference between now and when it was working fine is the usuage of a micro SD card. My device works perfectly when there is no SD card installed, if I install a SD card the device starts to show the stange behaviour straight away.
The SD card which I am using is a 1 GB Sandisk card. What do you think? Do you think it is a device hardware problem or what?
Thanks in advance for any offered help!

Have you tried reformatting the card in a PC card reader? FAT32, allocation size of 512. and make sure contacts on card are clean.
Mike
I did that already but with no improvement. What I don't understandis, why my device switchs on by itself, as if it detects a new SD card inserted while it is off!!
I don't want to be fast concluding it is a hardware problem, it is still under warranty, but I would like to send it only when I am sure it is hardware problem!

Need to establish if it's the card or device. Don't suppose you can access another card?
Mike
I have only one card, it seems I will have to buy another one, just to do the test! I will do that today in the evening, unless someone has better ideas.
thx

There's a bit discussion going on already... see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324
Well, I had some similar problems. Now I make sure that EVERY application & service running is on the main device memory (RAM). eMail attachments, browser cache, all today add-ons and all applications that run with a schedule (like Backup etc.) - Only documents, Tomtom Maps and Games are left on the SD card. Reduced freezes to one in a week.
Well, and I just ordered a Kingston card and will compare it to SanDisk. Both 2GB.
I tried another 512 Mbyte card, it seems better so far (only since 1 day). I didn't have any freezes, but the device wakes up by itself from time to time, although the option to wake up when a key is pressed is disabled. I can't understand this!!
Kingston 2GB card working perfect so far. Running WM6 (check my signature).
Hello All,
My Vario is behaving weird. The mini SD card is not being recognised at all. I have tried:
Soft reset- nothing
Making a 20KB backup on the inserted card: works
Checking if anything else is on the card: no, card only lists the small backup file
thousends and thousands of times: inserting and removing the ^%%*&^$&^%#&-card- nothing
Hard reset (I saw no other solution)- to my horror: nothing (sys info states: no card is inserted)
After the hard reset, my options are very limited. I do not have a card reader to get to my backup file....
Anyone here has an idea on how to get my card being recognised again?
Anyone else also very tired of this WM **** crashing all the time or is it just me? (and my usage?
had the same problem on my hermes guys from a different forum gave me a solution is not the best but it works for me cut a little corner of a business card and insert it under your sd card to make a tighter fit and keep it making contact if everything was erased of your sd card you might have to reformat and reload your data this is a pretty common issue i guess i had to get a new sd card because the last one says I have a 4GB file in it but its only a 2 GB sd card crazy ****.
holy mozes!

thanks mate! That was quick! tried it and unfortunately it does not work. Even tried a different card: same deal. My card in someone else's device: whooohoo! my data (and backups) are still there!
So I checked with my provider just a minute ago and they told me it is still under warranty!!!
I guess I can close this post now...??? ...good, now where's that dutchie...
My HD2 worked fine for the first few months I had it, but then one day my SD card unexpectedly crashed... completely... no reformatting, no salvaging, it wasn't recognized by the phone or my computer or any other device I tried it in.
No big deal, I thought, it happens.
I got a new SD card. Used the opportunity to try a new ROM (dZenkins 1.80.0515).
Started reinstalling stuff and after about 2 days, the new SD card started losing data, in less than a half a day it died too. Same thing, completely fried.
So I got another one. This one, in less than 6 hours, has started showing the same symptoms. I'm expecting it to die any minute.
All 3 cards were 8 GB, Micro SD. Seem legit (even if they're not 100% genuine cards, its unlikely all 3 would experience the same failure).
Also, it happened on my original ROM and now on the new ROM, so I think it's unlikely to be software related...?
With this last (3rd) card, I was very careful to always plug it in to the computer as a "hard drive" and to always eject it through Windows before taking the USB out.
So, I'm totally stumped. Any thoughts?
I did some research and it seems like from time-to-time HTC phones have had a problem with destroying their removable storage cards. Has anyone experienced this with the HD2?
Living in Kunming, China, its going to be tough to get an HTC repair on this thing...
Have you tried another MicroSD Brand?
Yep, tried different brands, still the exact same symptoms.
Same here. My card last only 2 days after purchased. Same problem, it just crashed, not even able to be reformatted or read by pc. It just "gone". Now I'm using 16G, and still working on the replacement. By the way, I'm in Jakarta.
same problem here
i use 16 gb micro sd
i started to have acces troubles to some of my folders
my firts card died 2 days ago
is not recogised anymore what so ever
Contacted HTC, they said try hard reset.
Of course I already did that, no change in the problem. I hard-reset after each failure, but the problem keeps recurring.
Other people who have experienced this problem: Did changing to a different size card help? Or changing how you synced your device?
Today I gave the HTC distributor a visit. They said that they HAD ALREADY WARN ALL THE SELLERS ABOUT SANDISK PROBLEM WITH HTC HD2!
Wow, that's quite a revelation!
So, maybe next time you better buy memorycard other than Sandisk.
I've had problems with the HD2 and microSDHCs. Decided to disable the storage card power saving features on a just in case basis and haven't had any problems since (touches his wood). Purely anecdotal but it worked for me.
Answer is here !!!
Hey Guys !!! I have HAd the same problem when i newly got my Leo ... three 8GB sandisk cards were ruined .. read only 30 MB ... i have changed to kingstone 8GB and now i have been working very good using my new card for more than two months !!
yep same thing happend to me last nite . i had a sandisk 8 gig card , and try to format it though my pc and still nowt .
i wont be buying a sandisk card again.
I'm using kingston 8Gb card since ever, no problem with it.
I been using a transcend sd card 8 gig and works fine, never though the cheap brand would be so good
Me too, Using free 8G scandisk .. 2 week gone, then change another 8G scandsk 1 mth gone, then downgrade to 4G scandisk .. 2mth usage gone, now change to 4G kinsgton, already 2mth old ...hope that fine ..
but my old Tytn II, from already 3 years old ..the 2gb kinsgton never let me down ...
Is it the phone structure cause the Sd card burn??? if I not wrong the HD2 processor is under the memory card ....
Reformatted card in my NIKON
Hi, I have had the same problem with my 16Gb SDHC card in HD2. Neither Windows or Linux could reformat/read/write the card correctly.
Tried my camera (nikon) which can reformat the card. Success!
Still the card failed when i copyed the old rescued /backup contents.
Then I removed the exchange sync to the card and moved the thousands of pictures and videos (Camera folder) (renamed folder).
And now the card seems to work again?!?
now I am able to take pictures and videos without getting a corrupted card...
hi,i'm from nanjing, china, maybe you got three 括容卡,i just buy two cards which were you described. Now i am using a real 8G kingston SDHC card and a 4G card
this problem also happen to me, twice ...sandisk and transcend 8G...now still looking the best SDHC for my HD2

If you were using WP7 then switched to Android than the WP7 is the problem. WP7 formats your SD card with a funky format, I forget what it is called. You see WP7 uses the SD card as the internal memory, WP7 native devices also do this to as they use SD cards for internal memory. Anyway the easiest way to fix this is to SD card in a adapter and put it in a digital camera and formatting it then format it on your computer with Fat 32. The digital cameras can remove that funky format and you will not have to get special software to do it.
Stupid WP7!!!!
I destroyed 2 SD cards so far within 1 day. It happened when I installed that new updateable YukiXbmod Windows phone 7.5 ROM. It just RUINED my Stock 2GB Sandisk and my 8GB Transcend!
I really hope that it isn't the phone f*****g those Sds up! Otherwise I don't know what to do!
---------- Post added at 10:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:09 PM ----------
Pls if ANYONE else has issues related to this ROM or WP7 in general tell me if you have a solution!
EDIT: I feel stupid... My SD cards are both functioning and they are NOT ruined. They are only locked by that WP7 ROM. I find it embarrasing I missed out on the part with the 1:1 chance of locking your SD.
EDIT2: And it's quite easy to retrive the cards
I had 2 8Gb cards 'killed' by Xbmod Yuki Mango + Gingerbread Android off SD. One card lasted a week before just dying. Had it formatted in Nokia N95 phone, but even though the format went ahead, the message read that the card is locked and demanded password. I formatted again, after which it was no longer functioning at all - nothing could be done. So I got it swapped for the same, which lasted 2 weeks - the same story - it just died. When I came to the shop to see if they'll swap it again, they questioned the chances of 2 cards just failing within a short period of time like that. Now on a third card, different brand, but if it goes, I say it's the ROMs, not the cards.
You guys are the most helpful!
My 16gb sandisk micro sd card is no longer being recognized. I booted my HTC HD2 in Android and mounted the sd card to transfer pics to my pc. Just then I got a call coming in and the phone immediately became unresponsive. I kept getting the force close message but I couldn't stop it (it seemed to be in a loop) So I unsafely disconnected the phone from the pc, took out the battery and rebooted it. It started up in windows, but when I went to check for the sd card it could no longer be found. I pull out the card put it back more than twice, and yet the phone failed to recognize my memory card.
Please help me guys
put the sd card into a card reader, connect to your pc and if if its recognised there, it might be a dying card I've lost 1 16GB and an 8GB in 18 months with my hd2
If the pc recognises the card with no error save the date, reformat to primary partition fat 32 using Easeus free edition, also try the phone without the card
Thank u
Hey ..I really do appreciate the time u took to respond. Funny I was thinking the same thing....I broke my old card reader, now I have to get another another on from Amazon.com. As soon as I can lay my hands on one that is gonna be my first move.
Again, thanks a bunch.
P.S
Sadly I feel like an idiot for not backing up my sd card...(more than 3000 photos on there )

After trying the SD Card thru a card reader and if it still doesn't work/recognize it - then your mobile (hd2's)windows is corrupted - coz the same happened with me thrice and ultimately I took it back to the HTC service centre and they re installed the windows 6.5 and since then everythings is working normally and there is no problem with the SD Card anymore, but your old card becomes thrash and you'll have to get a new card :0)

Same here. Lost a sd-card recently but probably due to my own fault.
The card was difficult to get out of the reader (Yup, it seems there is some tolerance on the size) so I had to use some small tweezers.
I finally managed to get it out without any visual damage but after inserting it in the HD2 it couldn't see it anymore, neither in the cardreader afterwards.
What I think is that I had physically bent the card and broke the connections to the actual memory chip.
Some good advice on memory cards and I can't stress this out enough especially for dedicated photo equipment. Instead of buying a 16GB card buy 2 x 8GB and from a known seller and known brand.
The best and probably worst experience example that I can give is from a couple who were on their honeymoon and lost all of their pictures because of a el-cheapo 8GB memorycard.
For a phone it is something else but I made a custom out of it to create a map on my c-drive called sd-card phone. Ok it is not a every week copy but it is handy to have the data on my pc and on my phone.
