from Google's I/O keynote today
Rejoice! Google has announced that they are putting together a team of people from many of our favorite carriers and OEMs, to commit to bringing the latest Android updates to users devices. These new guidelines will be constructed by folks at Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola, AT&T and, of course, Google.
According to Google, new devices will receive the latest updates for 18 months after their release -- if the hardware allows. More to come. Be sure to follow our live blog here.
Also the Xoom will be receiving Honeycomb 3.1 update TODAY
no mention of Acer in this announcement.
What about you guys, worried about updates from Acer now?

I believe they stated that "other" Honeycomb devices would receive the update in the coming weeks. So, yes, I'm worried until the sources hit and we get custom roms. Then not so worried anymore.
it all depends on how quickly acer gives an update.. can we not install the honeycomb 3.1 as it is as there is very little change made to the OS by acer or do i have to root it before doing it?
Well I'm worried, I think I'm taking mine back tonight as its tthe last day of my return. If the bootloader is cracked or Acer makes some statement or releases an update in the coming weeks than I'll buy it again. Otherwise ill see what the Samsung is all about.

Not worried. The Xoom wifi-only doesn't even have an update date yet. Most likely they just wanted to get it out quickly for all the Xoom 3g folks that have had buyer's remorse creeping up on them since launch.
Per msnbc.com
"It's weird that Google is singling out the Xoom, on the tablet side. We've already tested three Honeycomb tablets in addition to the Xoom: LG G-Slate, Acer Iconia A500 and Asus EeePad Transformer, and they all work about the same, and share the same basic specs. Presumably they will be included in the whole "coming weeks" thing, but if not, that will be bad."
I agree with this; not worried. They said that others were going to be available at a later time (coming weeks).

First of all, lets give them sometime for the update to go out to the 'other' devices.
If Acer updates our Iconias, then all is well. If not, well just have to rape their support pages/email/everything
Not sure I see anything too ominous in this announcement. On the plus side, the consortium is designed to reduce fragmentation, a huge complaint from the Google developer/user community. Perhaps Google's influence will prevail over the commercial monsters.
Just because Acer wasn't mentioned doesn't really portend anything bad, IMO. Not sure if they're just courting the flagship platforms and using them for an example, but I doubt seriously that means they're ignoring all the other platforms.
Sure, I'd like to see an update from the manufacturer, but I'd rather have a recovery first. I mean, I've only had the device for 2 weeks. How greedy can I really get?

I'm more concerned that the movie tab isn't available to us. Will it happen in a few weeks or does it require the drm hardware the Acer is missing.

Not worried, Acer states they will release updates by June on their a500 website. My guess is 3.1 will be coming then as well:
"720p is the current resolution supported. 1080p will be available by June 2011 via software upgrade. "
It surprises me how many folks are returning these so fast. Gotta have some patience...everything will progress forward, it just takes longer than 14 days most of the time. Of course something better will come, it always does. But this is still a nice device for the times. I knew I was an early adopter of the OS and the hardware when I bought...I'm in for the long haul unless something breaks

I agree, people tend to get overeager when the newest updates come out and tend to forget the big picture or the fact that the A500 is still a great device that you can actually buy today!
Is it ever gonna happen.
Or shall we move to xoom?
Honest question needs an honest answer
Especially sine vidafoine has already ditched 10.1v, I doubt it will be updated ever.

I asked my provider Vodacom (owned by Vodafone) about the 3.1 update for the Galaxy Tab 10.v. This is what I wrote to them:
"To whom it may concern
I have a contract with Vodacom ,and they gave me a Galaxy tab 10.1, but it only has Android 3.0.1 installed. I would like to know when Vodacom/Vodafone will release the software update to Android 3.1 so that I can finally attach USB devices to my Tablet. It is a little frustrating having old software while other tablet users already have the update (Take the Motorola XOOM for instance, and the fact that the Galaxy 10.1 is already shipping with Android 3.1 in the states).
So my honest opinion is if Vodacom wants to be a credible and reliable mobile operator selling the latest technology, then they must update their Tablets/Smartphone to the latest software promptly."
I'll post their reply here...
yeah that would be nice to wait for their answer. But i think vodafone wont follow the 3.1 update path cuz the update will be different for 3.1 v cuz it has 3g from the 3.1 update for wifi only version.
I personally think, since 10.1 is out......the development and tweaks here at xda will slowly die down for 10.1v.
Samsung does it again. Loyal customers are kicked out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129309
I already have 3.01. The most verifiable source would be vodafone to answer our questions.
Do we have 3.1 or not. !0.1 is already shipping with 3.1.
I finally got an answer from Samsung south Africa and the update is expected to come in August, at least on south Africa. So it seems like by September we'll have the 3.1 update.
Samsung promises me a follow up phone call with a data expect to explain more and if I get interesting information I will post it here.
What a mission to get anyone to speak on this...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
I got an answer from Vodacom directly and all they said was that Samsung had already released the 3.1 update and now vodacom's technicians were busy with it to ensure it was compatible with their services and network.
But no expected date for release was given.
Honestly though, My hopes are lying with the XDA community, I still think that if we can repartition the 10.1v then hopefully it will allow us to flash the 10.1 updates or roms with minimal effort. We have all the driver source codes for the 10.1v so hopefully that will also help things.
Twigster, just for interest's sake - to whom did you speak to at vodacom. Honestly speaking I found them unhelpful.
I'm not going to buy a network operator branded device again. My nexus is always yge first to get updates because it's unlocked.
Sigh

I emailed their support division for answers the day that 3.1 was released for the 10.1. They came back to me about two weeks later with that response. So no one in particular.

I thought that running stock was supposed to make us free from the carrier update chains..
anwyays, you can already flash 3.1 with touchwiz UX in the 10.1v developmet forums, so why not give it a shot if you really want 3.1?

Here is hope that Acer realizes the sooner they provide the community with what it needs to use our devices to their full potential the sooner they will move more units!
As soon as I saw Samsung released the kernal source it really got me down that I bought the Acer 2 weeks ago. Really like this tablet but with the lack of Acer opening things up I think my tablet is craigslist bound.

I was just thinking... could it be that Acer is nothing but a marketer? They bought the device from OEM manufacturer somewhere in China, label it with 'Acer' and 'Iconia A500' and sell it.
That's why they know nothing about 'unlock bootloader'. Release kernel? Dream on!
Well, hope I'm wrong

That's what I've heard too. I think the Huawei is the only official announcement for 3.2 at this point, with the flyer being rumored to be waiting on 3.2 for the update. So we're still only 1 real update behind.

No.
One of the things 3.2 brings to the table is better support for 7" tablets (presumably 1024*600 resolution), but it also brings better hardware acceleration and bug fixes applicable to all Honeycomb tablets.

I would like to see a relevant and trustworthy source as well. Everything I've read says that 3.2 = 3.1 fixed for 7" screens and Adobe Flash 10.3 built in. I haven't seen where any additional features or fixes were announced.
Technically I don't see why they wouldn't fix whatever bugs are discovered in 3.1, BUT I'm guessing 3.1 is the final major release with 3.2 being a minor one and maybe 3.2.x being supplemental bug fixes until Ice Cream is announced and released.
Tomshardware has it. I cant post links yet due to post count.

It would be great, if only ICS wasn't slated for Q4 to say the least, and you should add Acer adapting and testing time... And that's IF they will bother to release it at all.

I understand the GPS issue is more of an issue with 3.2 since this versions seems to be the same for a500 and a501. On a500 it was less of an issue since it is not planned to be used on moving around tablets whilst a501 is supporting 3G and hence GPS might be an issue. Since both tablets have nearly the same hardware it will be fixed all at once and has to be working, otherwise at least a501 customers might complain about it. So why not wait for another 10 days and it is done well.
You need to check your facts.....that was the old CEO/founder of Acer, as in not currently working for Acer who made those comments. Akin to Paul Allen saying something like he doesn't like Win 7 or something like that.

Hey... Anybody know the scheduled date for official ICS update on Acer Iconia Tab a501? The tab unpacks with an official app "Iconia Tab Enhancement", which claims in the Play Store to be required for ICS update for a501.
Let's discuss any ICS related updates (including new stable ICS ROMs) on Acer Iconia a501.

Doesn't say anything about the rest of the world...
America seems to sell through telco's so there would be a problem there.. But I bought an A501 without being stuck to a provider in Australia.
I believe you can buy an A501 outright without being stuck using a providers own unique brand of android...
I'd like to know if Acer(the rest of the world) is going to release an ICS update soon... There has been a leaked A501 ICS rom so hope Acer get their finger out of their respective bum and release to the A501 community soon...
