Hello everyone, recently picked up an acer a500 over the weekend and i have to admit i am in love with it, i have always thought that tablets were useless when i have an android phone but i have to admit, this thing has changed my mind, and the fact that it has full usb makes it even better, but I have been a little annoyed at the lack of a keyboard / laptop dock. After reading a couple of threads about what the dock connector does on the tab I have decided to fill the need for this adapter. What i have planned includes the following.
Definite features are:
Full Keyboard
Charging ability
Extra usb ports
Possible features are:
Built in harddrive and OR memory card reader
Built in battery (obviously a little expensive to add so may be not possible)
Built in trackpad to use as a mouse.
I am just trying to see how many people would be interested in this and what they would be willing to pay for this. I would love to provide an adapter for the community since acer didn't make one, I also have a couple of other questions as well, if i made two models, one with a battery built in and one without how much more would you be willing to pay for an extra battery, also this would be a fordable dock meaning you could fold it together to carry like a normal laptop.
I look forward to hearing some responses, i hope to be able to offer this for about $100 or less however the more features obviously the more expensive it will be to implement.
if its possible, i'd love to buy one!
Awesome, I plan to have a prototype made by the weekend, i think the material of choice is going to be wood since it's light weight, easy to manipulate and also sturdy and it doesn't conduct electricity
once i see a working prototype, then id preorder, until then all your doing is fishing for donations, ive been lurking xda for quite some time and usually people with so few post and not a recognized developer are just spewing flights of fancy and never actually create anything, though if im wrong, prove me wrong and ill be the first to not only apologize but preorder one. not trying to be a d*ck just saying how it usually goes..
If it looks good and works ill be instrested

No worries I understand completely, once I have a prototype done then and only then will I accept any orders or donations, should have made that more clear beforehand sorry about that, right now I'm just judging the interest of the community for such a product.
How will you be connecting this? AFAIK, the full pinouts and capabilities of the dock connector are not known...

Using my volt meter and some old fashion trial and error, I'm pretty confident in my abilities just need to actually get started on development, going today to look into what my supplies are going to cost.
A voltmeter isn't anywhere near enough... You might want to check out this thread first.
I know I will need more than a voltmeter, and yes i read that before i decided to embark on this project. This is where trial and error will come in, from a usb standpoint since there is an apparent lack of usb support through the dock this will be circumvented by having a small plugin to the usb host port in order to connect the planned additional usb devices in the dock.
genius
This is fantastic! I've been searching for a good case too, this sounds perfect, give the Transformer a run for its money. I'd buy one, let me know.
The dock connector doesn't have the required pins for USB, or really anything other than charging.
any prototypes up? the idea of the keyboard dock extra battery and usb mouse sounds like bliss
It could be some sort of variation of the keyboard that Acer already made for this tablet. Perhaps modifying it so that you can put the dock in to charge and have the input device (in this case the keyboard) connect via bluetooth. Having the touchpad for a mouse is a different story though.

Be cautions with Trial and error on a mobile device . there electronics will not be forgiving any type of over voltage or short circuits . And you could very well be shopping for a new ICONIA .
To me a dock for a hand held tablet is counter productive . PEOPLE BUY A NETBOOK.its faster more power more storage more battery . LESS MONEY.
Ok the above is my opinion only I have a 11.6 inch hp notebook with the new multi core amd fusion cpu i get unbelievable battery life. Near that of my iconia .
with a full keyboard and track pad 1.2 tb hard drive
So good luck . by the way if you get the connectors and hardware worked out make the case out of lexon or carbon fiber both easy to work with and mold to any shape . acrylic works well also..
GOOD LUCK INSURE your iconia and home up front Erica Renee

Acer has not made a keyboard that uses the dock for this tablet. You may be thinking of the W500 keyboard, or of a USB keyboard.
To be honest, I don't see this going anywhere. OP, I'd suggest you find out how to get USB or Keyboard off of that connector before asking for preorders.
To anyone else, I'd suggest you just keep looking. Not to be rude or mean to him, but the OP seems to be rather noobish, and I think your money would most likely be better spent elsewhere, or at least held onto until there's some sort of result or breakthrough.
Also, the OP only having 9 posts throws up a red flag to me.

I was one of those guys who didn't know what the Asus Transformer was untill two days before the launch. At that point I wanted it, and was planning on getting it and was even awake when Bestbuy still had units, but I was going to wait untill I got to a computer and had more time. Man, was that a mistake !
Anyways i always have dissmissed the Acer A500 as a cheap tablet that has issues, and doesn't feel high quality. But I went into the store and checked it out for a few minutes and liked it. Seemed to feel nice and solid (Maybe a little too solid), and it has a USB port (With the new 3.1 update soon!). My concerns now are with the screen (Quality/Durablility), seems a bit portly (Doesn't look like an iPad ) , and still software issues+GPS. And then I have heard about their costomer support and I worry as I have bad luck with gizmos .
I have looked briefly at the new Galaxy Tab coming out and I like the way it looks, the screen should be of great quality, ect ect. But there is no USB, or any connectivity!
I have TERRIBLE patience (HATE waiting) and I want a Tablet soon, but I don't want to buy and have a bad tablet and regret it. So any thoughts on 1, 2 or all three tablets would be greatly aprieciated.
I'm pleased with mine, but still have a month or so before my return period is up to decide. I'm waiting to see if the next month or so of updates beef up the A500, or take the TF101 to the next level. Whichever one it is, I'll go for that one.
oh dear, not another one of these.
either buy it or don't.
I like it a lot and will stick with it!

You know, there are at least 10 of these questions in both the TF and the A500 thread, you might want to search.
Anyway, my answer is wait. You're going to look for each and every problem you've read about the Acer and Asus, so I'd wait for the Galaxy Tab and start with that. If you don't like it, return it and get either the Asus or Acer. If you don't like any of them, I'm sure someone else will be just around the river bend.
Each tablet has their strength and weakness and at this point it's all about the build quality and the software.
Do you want a keyboard dock + more juice? The Asus is for you.
Do you want a USB Host port or need flash for your camera? Acer's the only one.
Do you want the best guarantee in getting software updates quickly and a super thin+light tablet? Samsung's got your back.
You've read about the issues.
The Asus is plagued with perceived light bleeding (not everyone), will possibly have a creaky backplate (not everyone), has no flash and has no usb host. Some people report freezing and rebooting, but this is true of Honeycomb period, so this is more than likely beyond the brand. The keyboard dock as of right now is buggy at best and most people report freezing/lockups while using it (known fact) and the battery in it runs all the time whether it's docked or not (known fact) so right now it doesn't live up to it's purpose unless you keep it plugged in.
The Acer's software is unrefined. We've had everything from people reporting they can't use gps without wifi (likely due to faulty hardware, not a general issue), the screen lighting up randomly (doesn't happen to everyone all the time) and the micro sd card isn't accessible from a PC while it's in the unit (known fact). The cell standby process is also running in the wifi only unit, an occurrence not found in the Xoom or TF afaik.
Some people report freezing and rebooting, but this is true of Honeycomb period, so this is more than likely beyond the brand.
The build quality for some, is lacking. 2 people have claimed their camera covers to be lifting, some people claim the side(s) creak and I've even read one person being worried about the charging port loosening up over time.
The Samsung isn't even out officially. You can read as many reviews as you want, you'll never get the dirty details until it hits the GENERAL public. The TF looked so good with it's limited release abroad, but when it came stateside en masse (sort of, anyway), we're reading about all these issues with the unit.
So I'll tell you what I tell anyone who asks. If you can, just WAIT. Obviously you can't wait forever, but wait until you can try what's just around the corner before you prematurely get something your subconscious mind more than likely dislikes anyway.
I was one of the early adopters of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7", which Samsung promptly abandoned after just a couple of months time.
Left a very bad taste in my mouth, if you get my drift. Hopefully I wont be singing the same sad song about the Iconia. Fingers crossed.
I started trying to get my hands on a Transformer but after Asus not being able to bring enough and days of trying to get one i finally gave up on it.
After days on reading and watching videos on the Acer Iconia the more i watched the more i like it and i decided that's what im gonna buy since it offers the most outta the box, I really didnt want the Keyboard dock on the TF so not having USB on the tablet became an issue for me the ips display is nice but its not like the A500 display is bad. at some point i kinda wanted to wait for the Samsung galaxy 10.1 but after seeing the white ones they gave out in Google IO yesterday it finally confirmed Acer A500 is the right tablet for me. i cant imagine not having Micro SD/SD card or a USB it seems Samsung mimics Apple too much that thing looked too much like an ipad 2 no ports only a proprietary port on the bottom.
so im going tomorrow to pick up my Acer ill root it and wait for 3.1
nice quick explanation babyboy. you touched on main points and your simple arguments made complete sense.
I was finally able to order a TF and while I've been waiting, I've been in store playing with the Acer. Most of my observations have been on the surface and I just can't get over the camera location on the Acer.
After seeing the IO Sammy, I had the opposite reaction in terms of aesthetics because I'm one of those that do like the look of Apple products. Functionality-wise though, you hit the nail on the head. SD cards and USB are a must since I'm transitioning from an Ipad.
Few things:
Build: Not sure how the Acer's build is an issue, since it is more solid and not creaky like the Asus (still great device).
Camera: Cameras on tablets do not seem practical to me and invites mobile handling that may result in a dropped device.
Weight: I still find it funny that folks get up tight about the one ounce weight difference between them, but have no issue getting the keyboard, which adds more bulk and one pound more weight than the Acer. How does that make sense to people?
I prefer the build of the Acer and like the USB connectivity on the tablet, so expect it to weigh a little more. The new Toshiba is the same or slightly heavier.
The A500 is a very good tablet and most consumers posting at Best Buy and other places seem to agree.
I caved and got the a500, and am very pleased. Weight is a non-issue for me, it just feels more solid. Quite happy about the USB slot, I read that in 3.1 you will even be able to connect a 360 controller to one of these! Can anyone say N64 emulation
Besides from aesthetics, it's likely the Samsung 10.1s will be identical in specs. I may take this one back, but oh boy, HDMI and USB...big plus for me.
I'll be honest.
I dont own a Acer yet..
but i did own a Asus transformer which i returned.
People were telling me to keep it., but Asus has dropped the ball a bit on quality isssues.
Around the screen there is a black adhesive that holds it close to the bezel, and let me tell you
Someone drunk probably but the adhesive in place, it wasn't even straight, and made it looks out of place.
and not only that, around the adhesive there is a gab between the LCD and the adhesive and dust and crap was getting in there... others have reported the same issues.
I like the ICONIA that i saw at bestbuy because the screen was flush across the unit .. thumbs up!

Yea, I saw, exept everyone I looked at had like two posts... But maybe I didn't see them. Sorry 'bout that!
I went back to play around with the Iconia some more and I love it. It just seems like the screen has nothing on the iPad/Asus (IPS) but I never got to really test the screen with a movie and it seems a bit heavier. I LOVE the USB port, and with 3.1...
Any word on Acer Support? I really have bad luck with devices and don't want to be stuck without help.
Thanks for all the posts and unless people have horror stories about their support I might order one on Amazon as I don't think they will charge me tax ...
(Edit) They do charge tax... And since the tab doesn't look like a viable option for me, the Iconia looks like the best thing out there that is in a price range I can afford.
I got the Iconia after Asus refused to say anything about the Transformers expected release(Maybe I wasn't trolling their FB page enough?)
I like the camera, unlike some of the others here posted. My cell phone has an awful camera on it, and I generally have my Iconia with me, so it's nice to be able to pull it out and take a good quality snapshot or record a video.
I haven't noticed the issues with the GPS, but I haven't used it more than once, just to play with it.
So far, I've been using the USB port a lot, I got a mini usb keyboard I've been using for dosbox(Wolfenstein 3D!)
I haven't noticed any issues with the build quality; as far as I can tell, I could drop this thing down a flight of stairs and it'd be fine, though I think I'll leave that to someone else to test.
I had an issue with the wifi refusing to join ad-hoc networks(phone tethering), but that was easily fixed by rooting and replacing the problematic files.
My take on the Transformer (from reviews) is that it seems to be a good concept, but a poor implementation of it. It seems to be shoddy construction, like Asus wanted to get their foot in the door and rushed it too much. The software issues on it are driving me away too.
A dock seems rather worthless when you have a USB port, as soon as 3.1 comes out, that is.(USB mouse ftw!)
The galaxy looks blah to me, I don't think I want to have anything to do with it. I wasn't impressed with the older galaxys.

Just looked at the Tab on cnet.com. They didn't say anything about microSD, and when they did a close up around the device it looks like it comes without. Their model didn't come with the new Samsung icky thing over honeycomb? Without even microSD, the tab is out. It looks really nice, but without any expansion ports or USB, its not for me. And from a few people in here the Asus is looking less and less appealing. Hmmmm...
Hi,
I can't decide between Iconia and transformer
asus+50$=Acer(USB2 port)
Acer+50$=ipad(no port)
I read some where in this forum that asus have more bugs than acer. I know honeycomb 3.1 for asus has been released. I would like to know if 3.1 fix all the problems.
And USB2 port, is it worth 50$ more?
My problem is transformer I have to get online but iconia, I can get it from futureshop local store.
I also here that battery of asus is better then acer.
I would like to hear a comment from asus 3.1 honeycomb user.
Thank

I have the Transformer with the docking keyboard. It can be bought without the keyboard but that would be like buying a bike without any wheels. Pointless.
With the ASUS docked you have 2 fully functional USB2 ports which you can plug a mouse or flash drive or even an external disk drive into. There is also a battery in the keyboard which charges the tablet when docked. I have had 2 days CONSTANT use (about 14 hours) out of a single charge without any worrys. Just those facts alone would be enough for me to choose ASUS over ACER but theres more..
The ASUS uses an IPS panel to give a far beter viewing angle and its gorilla glass will stop it getting scratched. The whole unit feels great to hold and when undocked its lighter than the ACER so I imagine it will feel better to hold over a period of time. I rooted and flashed the 3.1 OS from xda and I have absolutely no problems with it so far. When the brightness is turned up full the screen looks absolutely amazing putting it on par or even better than the ipad2 display.
I would definitely choose the ASUS over ACER. Yes you can get a bluetooth keyboard for the ACER but it wont have the extra connectivity or a built in keyboard to suppliment your tablets lifespan. The OS will be a bit buggy as with any new OS but any problems will soon be ironed out and as I said before I havent had any problems with mine. The only problem I had was that after the 3.1 upgrade my pop3 email widget wouldnt connect but a 3rd party app soon sorted that out.
Hope this gives you something to think about
Mark.

I have to disagree on that point, but I suppose it depends on our personal requirements. I'm on the other side of the fence, I can't see the point of buying a tab with a keyboard, but I know that there are many who will disagree and have valid reasons for paying extra for the keyboard.
I've compared the Acer and the Asus and I think the Transformer is the better of the two, both in design and smoothness of operation. That's just my opinion though.
For me, the Transformer without the dock would be like a bike with no wheels. Depending on what and where I'm doing it, I use the dock or not. I really like being able to pull off the dock without a glitch and keep going. While I can appreciate the slimmer Samsung - no dock - no go.
Bye.
I would like to add few more things, besides those already mentioned above.
The USB ports in the Transformer keyboard dock, supports NTFS formatted HDD out of the box. Asus went one extra step to add that NTFS support incorporated into the Transformer, plus they also added the File Explorer/Manager.
Not sure if that's the case with Acer or other honeycomb tablets, but please go ahead and check.
The Transformer also has a micro SD card reader plus a full SD Card reader in the keyboard dock. You pretty much will have no problem with memory/storage expansion, copying files around, backing up pictures from camera, USB drive, etc.
And the biggie most people forget about , connecting your mobile to the dock via usb charges you mobile which is a brilliant feature when out and about
DESIRE HD using leedroid. ASUS TRANSFORMER using prime
Whoa!
You just made me realize I had a portable 24 Wh battery and didn't even know it! Does that work even when the TF is not docked, i mean just the dock?
I love the dock anyway, and I keep docking and undocking all the time. More than the keyboard, I end up using the dock as a hinge to hold the TF at an angle to watch videos without killing my arm. That I can plug back in and get extra juice doesn't hurt either.
Coming back to the title of this thread though, I have the FOTA with 3.1 but my Flash in browser is still slow. The difference is noticeable between youtube site and youtube app. HD Videos play smooth on youtube app but not on the website. Am I missing something?

I have to agree with you. My transformer is almost always on the dock, except for when I play certain games. It really is a laptop replacement for me. The battery life with the dock is almost unbelieveable - I've never felt worried about running to a charger to get some extra juice - I couldn't use it enough to run down both batteries. Awesome stuff.

The dock is useful, but you have to add a other 150$.
For me, I will not buy a dock righ now. wait for the price goes down.
So i am comparing transformer vs iconia without any addition add-on.
I hear camera is very bad and no camera flash for asus.
For Iconia, USB2 is very very good sell point. For exemple you can transfer picture or word documents directly to your friend with USB key. Is any other way to use USB key on transformer without dock?
I am worry about battery. Asus claim 9.5h and acer, 8h.
I know that 1.5h is not much but... For people using 3.1 how battery is doing? longer or shorter?
Metallic feel vs plastic feel.
Some people said asus feel cheap.
Arrrr... can't decide.

I've used the Acer for about two weeks... I'm glad I stuck with the Transformer.
The "metallic feel" of the Acer is just brushed plastic... and it's thick and heavy too!
The screen has very poor pixel density, you can actually see dots on your screen like a CRT monitor!
Battery life... I would say they are both the same with real world use. Of course with the TF dock, you can go day and night without worry.
The USB on the Acer is nice... on paper, but I couldn't get it to work well with a few usb devices I had - made the USB port useless. Also, it couldn't tether to my Android phone... this would be a huge dealbreaker as I use tethering all the time.
Now, the Acer was on sale the other day on an Ebay deal for $380.. at that price, you can't really go wrong, but even still, for $20 more, you get the Transformer The dock can be found for $115, so it's a great deal for the combo.

The battery life on the tablet alone is very good. The only exception is that the battery doesn't last as long as something like the iPad when its in a sleep like state. However, otherwise, the battery life is excellent. Even without the dock, I flew across the country with no worry about battery life. With the dock, battery life is just incredibly ridiculous. You can't run it down in a day. Even if you never use the keyboard, think of it like an extended battery you can put it on when your not using it.
Before I bought it, I was worried about the plastic too. However, this is not an issue. The plastic feels great, and the frame around it as well. I don't think you'll find the feel of it at all disappointing. Like others have said, the screen is far better than the Motorola Xoon or the Acer Iconia tablet.
Honestly take a look at a acer and a transformer side by side the choice is clear.I love my transformer

Just wanna point out something. The Acer IS made of brushed aluminum, not plastic, aside from the two little strips on the side, and the micro SD hatch. Also, every USB device I've tried has worked...
Both tablets are equivalent as far as I can tell. The transformer will offer more in terms of upgrade (mainly, the dock) which you just don't have with the acer but the acer has more ports on the tablet itself, which is only usefull if you plan to use them. To me, at the time (wich is only a month ago...) having the option to get the dock later was a bigger advantage than an aluminium back which I don't mind not having as I never worry about the type of surface I can rest my transformer on (best plastic back I ever felt too!).
The only bug I have ran into is the typing lag in the stock browser.
I actually got the dock now and it is really cool. You can wait for "bundles" to be available wich will bring the total to 500$ for the 16Gb instead of 550$ if you get them separatly.
For me the real choice is either the Transformer with the dock or the iPad2. Anything in between just doesn't seem worth it feature wise.

Just wanna point out something. The Acer IS made of brushed aluminum, not plastic, aside from the two little strips on the side, and the micro SD hatch. Also, every USB device I've tried has worked...

Yeah, that's true, but I really got the sense that it was just brushed plastic... I mean, my phone (HTC Legend) has an aluminum body and you can certainly tell 100% that it's not plastic - the Acer, I was mulling over the case, tapping, trying to scratch it with my fingers and it still felt like plastic. LOL

Some people said the camera 5MP is terrible. Is this true?
It's a run of the mill 5mp phone camera. It'll take a picture of what you want.
Has anyone found a decent keyboard/case combination within the Uk? I'd like something that has the keyboard built into a leather style flip case. I had one (bluetooth leather flip case) for my iPad which was superb but the Iconia is a little too long for it
There are some on Amazon & Ebay, but people have reported in here that you need a USB hub to get the keyboard to work, which for me makes it useless. I don't want to have to lug around even more stuff!
The case also isn't a perfect fit.
Hi,
No personal experience but you might like the keyboard/case combination on eBay (search for object ID 160610349685 - Sorry I am not allowed to post hyperlinks yet)
The link refers to the Dutch eBay but I'll bet you can find the same device on the UK site of eBay.

re Case/Keyboard
hi - i have ordered one so will let you know my thoughts once it arrives - not expecting to much but again it may okay for light use in the office and i will use my other case for normal wear and tear protection.
I own that case or something amazing close to it. The reports of needing a USB hub to get the keyboard to work are accurate. I ending up buying a L shaped 4 port hub, it sticks out of the case but allows me to have a mouse and a usb stick plugged in at the same time.
My hope is that once 3.1 drops I can loose the hub, but I am not holding out to much hope.

does anyone actually own this one and can they report if it actually works, functionality, etc.
Thank you!
i own one of this, i like the case a lot, it looks stylish and it's very good for note taking, i also use a bluetooth mouse for easy access, the keyboard is made for windows (it has windows key) and havent found a way to bind the back action with any key, most keys works as intended, even the menu key (next to alt gr), but it seems tha honeycomb is not made to be used with just keyboard, you need to use the touch screen or a mouse. the case weigth a little bit less as tablet, has 3 magnets (one for close, one to secure the back support, and other to hold the latch while you use it), overall i think its a great case for the tablet, would like a more "honeycomb" oriented keyboard like the acer official, but for most things this just works.
I use it with dexter's P1 Rom, cause i coudn't make it work with any other rom, no even P2, virtous or stock 3.01.
cheers

Thanks. I might try this one out. For $19 it is an inexpensive risk I think.
this is cheap as I am finding keyboards for $69.00. why so cheap that always makes me flinch like it is not to be believed.
what do you think...
just looks to dog gone cheap!
the only bad thing i see here, is that there is no protection for the screen, when you close the case, the screen is in contact with the keyboard. But the idea is good, transform the tab into something near the transformer from asus for 10 time cheaper ^^
can someone test it please
I have one on order. Should arrive this week sometime hopefully. Will report back on how it works with my Acer tablet
I've ordered one of these as well should do the job short term. Worth the money compared to what some of the other cases are charging. Now that 3.1 has been released hopefully we'll see a lot more bluetooth/keyboard case combinations for this tablet as it seems it 'wasn't completely compatible' with certain hardware prior to this update. Needless to say it worked fine with my wife's ipad 2 bluetooth case just unfortunate that i couldn't jam my iconia into one of them! I think if there's not a bluetooth keyboard/folio case combo available soon I'm going to buy a bunch of the bluetooth keyboards a bunch of the leather folio cases for the iconia and a big tube of superglue and start my own case company!!
well the keyboard case i orderd arrived this morning, so it was a quick flash back out of the Galaxy ROM so i can plug the usb in. Using it to type this up.
sorry no photos but those in the advert are about correct, the only one missing is the kick stand.
The Case Quality is adequate, but considering what it costs then i can not expet too much. Stiching is okay and reasonably tidy, get the feeling it will fray though if rubbed a bit hard. USB cable is more than adequate. There are no cutouts for Camera, speakers etc but then i dont need that when i am using it as an office tool.
Drain on the battery for the USB power is noticeable but then i suspect that is the same for most plugins. Not too much of the plastic smell so that was okay.
The case closure is held in place with a small magnet, just about strong enough for the job. The kick stand is also held flat to the case when not in use by a magnet which is a nice touch. The angle of the screen with the stand is fine for me
The keys themselves give just enough play, Typing is for me okay as i dont have the largest hands in the world but if you are wide fingered then it may a little tight.
the right hand Shift and Enter keys a little to close for me, i keep hitting the Enter key by mistake. Obviously the function keys etc have no purpose.
The real problem lies in the fitting of the Acer into the case - the lugs that are supposed to hold it are about 3-5mm too large so the acer is very loose. it wont fall out forward or to the sides but as there is no lug on the top, turn the case around without the clasp closed and it will definitely be on the floor. i am sure i can find a remedy for this that would allow me use the case with a greater feeling of security.
on the whole a useable case if the security can be sorted for those needing to spend some time at the keyboard, but probably not your long term day in - day out case. Mine will probably end up on my desk and i will slip the acer in when i wnat to use it and back to something else for mormal use.
Hope that helps
ps. typed this in a notes program as i find the browser is very laggy when trying totype directly in to it.

GREAT FEEDBACK - thank you. I have the same one coming - should arrive next week.
For $19 - your review is very encouraging.
To use it for any normal activity you Need to figure out a way of not letting it slip out of the top. Some of the material you use on the dashboard of the car to stop your phone etc slipping might well do the trick . Probably easier and cleaner than some other methods I might try. But if it is a slip in and type , slip it out and walk away use, then it meets that criteria faily well.
Let me know your thoughts when you get it

I think you will be really happy. I have been using mine constantly since it arrived. Makes using the tablet much easier and far quicker when typing. Really adds a lot to the overall unit as a whole.

Looks like we have some competition now...
I must say that when I first heard of the thinkpad I thought it would be trash but reading this article definitely changed my mind.
I don't regret my purchase but if I didn't already have the TF there would be some definite consideration between these two tablets.
I honestly think what Asus did with the dockable keyboard and what Toshiba is now doing with there feature set are the biggest things to happen to android since the arrival of the G1 and then the OG Nexus.
Watch apple come out w/ the next ipad and charge a fortune for it because it has a "revolutionary dockable keyboard? Don't be in shock when it happens... I'm psychic.
I personally don't like any android tablet, honeycomb runs smooth but it just doesn't appeal as an OS. It looks outdated with that black bar and boring bottons at the bottom. I do like the designs, especially the S Tab 10.1! What I find awkward about this Lenovo tablet its the huge borders at the sides. Pure opinion!
The Lenovo keyboard doesnt actually dock with the display though does it? Also no extra battery in the keyboard so I dont see much similarity and definitely not as versatile as the TF
Mark.
the asus wins hands down on the keyboard dock. the lenovo dock just has those angled slots that all tablet keyboards have - which looks like the tablet would be kind of loose and prone to flap around a bit if you had it on your lap.
also looks a bit chunky and heavy, but if the hardware performs better than the asus, it might be worth a look at.
but what ever happened to the U1 android/windows hybrid that lenovo was supposed to be bringing out? that looked like a device worth getting.

It looks nice to me. I bet they sell a lot. Lenovo is a standard in corporations, unlike Asus.
it does look nice

I have had my TF for about 4 days now, and I am considering returning it to BestBuy so I can buy the Thinkpad. Here are my reasonings so maybe someone can set me straight ;-)
+ Enterprise Features from the Get Go - Cisco AnyConnect... I want to use my tablet for work when I am travelling and I get a call for an emergency. No other tablet that boasts the features of the Thinkpad has the Cisco client in the package. Yes I know I could root, but some corporations consider this a security violation and do not allow rooted devices on campus.
+ Netflix with ability to store movies locally. This isn't coming to the Asus device if the hardware parts are true and being able to store a movie and watch it on an airplane is compelling.
+ Standard Thinkpad-like Keyboard - Now this one is sort of a up and a down for the Lenovo, the Thinkpad keyboards are great, but their design is no where near as nice as the ASUS integration.
+ Standard looking power supply? - I still can't find anyone who mentions the power adapter, it looks from what I can see to be a fairly standard USB connector but for some stupid reason no one shows it. At least I can probably bet extra power cables for less than $40 a pop and they might actually be in stock.
+ Availability of a stylus that has been engineered to work with the Lenovo package (this one worries me if I decide to go with a custom ROM assuming root is achievable, will the stylus still work? )
- Keyboard dock doesn't appear to lend itself to laptop use, more toward desktop use, it looks flimsy in a way.
- No power in the dock to extend the useful time without a charger, although if it is a standard power port, I can charge on long plane flights without an inverter or some other craziness.
- Odd looking interface changes and not clear if you can go with a generic Honeycomb layout on your desk.
There are other pluses such as I may be able to get a discount through work and so on, but they aren't really generic. My big things really are the power cable that may be more than about 3' long and the enterprise package. But man do I love my TF and going to anything without as good of integration at the keyboard dock is just going to be so hard.
Right now I am leaning toward sticking with what I have rather than inviting problem, not to mention the Thinkpad does seem to have a fair amount of wasted space on the edges, not that the TF doesn't.

You can get a USB3 extension cable for your TF for about $7 on Amazon. I use on my dock which is on top of my desk.
Enterprise support would be nice, but we have such as custom package we have trouble getting it to run on Windows 7 let alone Android.
The Lenovo keyboard is a minus for me. I have a T410 i5 and it's a great machine, but I use cut and past a lot and hate the position of the function key next to control!!!

imo if you really want the stylus features (which seems pretty sweet) and the keyboard then you are better off with the thinkpad. People are saying the dock integration isn't as good on the thinkpad as it is on the TF, not sure where they are getting that from other than speculation. From what I can see, other than the keyboard being larger and thicker it seems to dock pretty much the same way as the TF.
For me though, I don't care much for the features on the Thinkpad and my TF has done everything I need it to do thus far.

Well, actually, it doesn't seem to dock the same way at all. First, it's not as sturdy, i.e., the TF/dock combo is essentially the same as a single integrated device. The Lenovo docks into a piece that then can be moved within the case. That's a nice feature if you use it on a desk or other flat surface, but I can't see using the Lenovo solution, e.g., while in bed, perched on my blanket, the same way I can my TF. Second, there's no second battery in the Lenovo dock. Finally, if you like the typical trackpad, then you'd want the TF.
The Lenovo looks nice, don't get me wrong, and that N-trig active digitizer would be nice if you want to take handwritten notes. If I were in my previous sales engineer role where I took copious notes during many sales meetings a week, that would be a nice feature. Then again, if that were the case, I'd probably just keep using my Windows 7 Tablet PC, which has the best handwritten notes tool (OneNote) and recognition on the market.

I agree with you, it isn't the same, the Lenovo keyboard isn't a dock, you don't power through the keyboard, you just plug it into a USB keyboard that has some Android specific buttons added in. And it does look a little flimsy from a sitting in an odd position perspective. There is nothing holding it in that position other than what appears to be a few indentations on the keyboard panel.
As for the notes, I haven't run Windows in about 8 years, not planning to start now ;-). And since I am considering going back to graduate school here in the future, I like the concept of the hand written notes, but you know if I really do go back to school I will just add it as a school expense and buy a the current well designed unit with a stylus, I really am thinking I will stick to the Asus as I really do like the dock integration. But I still do hate the power cable and I know it is only one thing, but it is driving me to distraction as it is like the thing that has me almost tipping toward returning this for the Thinkpad.

It is pretty obvious that Lenovo is targeting this system as a business tool. For that market it looks very good.
I can imagine having this unit sitting in its it keyboard dock at my desk and grabbing it to go to a meeting. At the meeting I would take notes with the stylus and having my crummy handwriting converted to text on the fly. Then when I got back to my desk I could integrate my notes into other documents, emails, etc.
The same scenario would probably work for students going from their desks to classes and back.
Of course it won't be as entertaining as watching someone on an iPad try to take notes, but you can't have everything.:->
Every week there are several new posts asking" Should I get an XXXX tablet now or wait for the YYYY tablet. You can fill in the XXXX and YYYY with any brand you want as there has been and probably will be new names to insert for a while. Each new tablet seems to have something that the previous one lacked along with some issues ( both new and old). If you are looking at a tablet do some searching ( not asking) here on XDA and find one that you are happy with and buy it. After you get it use it, enjoy it and upgrade firmware as needed. WAY too many people are spending unnecessary time and money always seeking the greener grass on the other side of the fence. With PC sales sagging, every manufacturer is looking for something to replace their revenue. Today it is the tablet. What works for me may not work for you. Read the specs and research before you buy. I am amazed by how many people buy items only to find out that a key feature they need is not there even though the specs indicated it was missing.
I guess Lenovo designed this tablet for 2.x, judging by the hardware buttons. It's a nice looking tablet, and the folio case is cool, but the buttons scream "last minute HC decision."

There is a Netflix patch for the transformer. Check out the thread in the development forum. It works great!
So I have one of the USB keyboards and it works great, but takes up the port. There can be found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175316
I am honestly happy with that one BUT
1) I am wondering if there is a bluetooth keyboard folio/case yet for the Iconia Tab so the port is not taken
2) If there is an Acer branded keyboard so all of the keys will work with the specific tablet
3) do the Apple and Xoom bluetooth keyboard folio/case work with the Acer?
month later - anything?
thought I would bump this thread. Is there ANY Bluetooth keyboard folios / cases that works with the Acer yet???
I don't think that the xoom bluetooth shouldn't have any problems, because it's both Android and bluetooth.
I wouldn't buy apple's keyboard before you can go into a store and ask if you can try it (because it can have a security handshake with other apple hardware)
I'm looking for a case that can hold a keyboard and tablet in one, but havn't found one for the Acer just yes (if you find one, let me know)
Xoom keyboard does work and there is a keyboard that Acer makes, just google it .
But I haven't seen any bluetooth cases yet.
Here is one I am considering: http://amzn.to/xJLQIO
Reviews on it are a little hard to go by, since the only reviewers so far are Xoom or Thrive users, and I'm not sure how the dimensions compare.
The mounting solution is rather interesting. It comes with 2 different sizes of rubber pieces that slide over the corners of the tablet, then Velcro to the inside of the folio. With our tablets being a bit on the heavy side, I'm not sure how well or long that would hold.
One thing I like about this one over the USB one mentioned in the OP (aside from it leaving the port open) is that this is a free standing case that looks like it could sit on your lap fairly easy, whereas the other one has that narrow easel stand which requires that it sit on a flat surface.
I'm still torn between them. If I had the cash, I'd just buy them both and return the one I don't like but that's not really an option, so I'll just hope someone else on here has tried this case.
There is an acer A500 specific keyboard. I use it and it works well. It has quick access keys for swapping apps and such straight from the keyboard. Not sure about a folio case though. I just use a laptop sleeve to carry everything and a hipstreet tablet stand to keep the tablet up.
I use a BT keyboard designed for the HP Touchpad and it works great

The keyboard in the Kensington FOLIO KEYBOARD CASE is almost exactly the same as that sony one, and you get the full case/cover.
The wireless keyboard in the Kensington folio is just about the best wireless keyboard I have purchased to date, and you get the case with it. Can use with or without the case.
