I've recently bought a used Nexus S i9020. I noticed that very rarely and randomly, the the capacitive home button light goes off on its own and in fact it is activated as if pressed by hand. I did a little research and found that capacitive buttons (search, back, home) activating on their own is a common problem with Nexus S. On google forums a Google employee even said this was a known software issue and will be fixed in an OTA soon. This post was from almost 1 year ago and we are already on 4.0.3 ICS so I thought I should post again and ask if anyone had the same experience and anyone could find a fix. Any help much appreciated.
I had the search button problem and I fixed it by flashing latest radio for my i9020a. You could try flashing another radio for your device.

can I keep the automatic OTAs coming while flashing another radio, or will it break them? sorry I am unsure about this. The reason I bought a nexus is to have the OTAs.
You won't have any problems with OTAs since this only modifies the radio baseband. You will still run on stock (but to flash new radio you do have to root and install CWM).
And you won't have any problems with ota's since Google is very slow zing

That is the radio I have on my I9020T and I'm having this problem. Will see if KB3 works (Have had better reception with KB3 but decided to go back to stock GB and so it was switched to KF1).
So I updated to 4.0.4 to see if this problem still occurred( I manually installed when I saw it on xda). Everything seemed fine until this morning when I plugged into the headphone jack. I had enough of this problem and decided to open my phone.
When I arrived home, I pulled out the replacement part that I ordered from eBay, and went to work. Everything seems to work really smooth. The new headphone jack is function as normal.
I just felt like I should share a potential solution to this annoying problem.
I'll later update the status of my new capacitive buttons, along with the headphone jack.
And yes, I was a bit nervous when doing this. I accidentally broke the small power button off while handling the board. It stuck back together by itself and works just fine. This will need a better fix. The thought of soldering comes to mind. But that's another job for later.

hey donnieace, any updates? How's that new headphone jack working for you?
I noticed that when I unplug my headphones while the screen is on the home button acts like it has been pressed/held down. As a result the recent apps are displayed. The only way to fix this is to turn the screen off then on again. I was wondering if swapping out the headphone jack fixed this because I might give this a try.

Yesterday my touchscreen no longer responded to input. Hard buttons worked. Took it to T-Mobile and will have a replacement within 7 days. Anyone else have their touchscreen die on them?
Is the HD2 black? Yeah, everyone it seems has suffered from this...especially if you run Android alot.
Mine died today. Unfortunately I have bought it second hand and don't have a receipt.
Any hints for fixing it would be nice.
Mine did it too. Got the replacement and it did it on that one too the next day. I just kept flashing random roms and after 2 or 3, it unfroze. Lesson i learned? If in android, your screen freezes, DON'T reset or take out the battery. Wait til the screen turns off and it apparently is safe to reset. (I quickly do a reboot command in android)

Wow, interesting, if true, that Android could affect our touchscreen like this. I'd test out flashing new ROMs but I already reverted back to stock ROM and SPL when I took it to T-Mobile. Think I'll just use the loaner in the mean time and await my shiny new HD2 =D

happened to me again today. I had to flash 7 different roms but eventually it did unfreeze. I picked a new kernel from a thread in android, the one where it prevents screen freezes and it so far has worked. For some reason, for me, it does it when it gets near moisture. Doesn't have to be on the phone, but if its raining out, misty out, foggy out and even humid out, and it constantly freezes up. Nice dry sunny day and i know i am good all day. If its acting up, gps will kill it for sure.

Well I just received my replacement today! =D Talk about a quick delivery, it got here before they even sent me the tracking number lol. Can't say its a "New" device. Telling from the hex screws it looks like it has been torn down. For a refurbished phone it looks new =)

Interesting theory.
It started acting up this morning again so i changed the kernel to this one

because its supposed to have the touch screen freeze/g sensor issue patch built in. And it has not yet. (And the backlight to my keys work a LOT better vs. the bangsters one.)

I was so happy with my HTC HD2 leo ever since I put the Energy sense 2.5 rom on it with radio 2_10_50_08_2 until today. Have the same problem with non-responsive touchscreen but hard keys work fine. I didn't even get to put Android on it yet : (
Not sure if I should try random roms or switch back to the original rom; newbie here and need quickest and easiest solution. Input greatly appreciated.
Try going back to the stock 2.13 ROM and see if it helps. It more than likely won't, but it's always worth a try!

Someone stated that multiple flashes fixed his, so maybe going on a flashing spree may do it. Best of luck and if you still have manufactures warranty I'd say use that.

This recently happened to my GF's phone, She said she was just playing a game one day, it froze so she popped the battery out and rebooted. Now every time she uses the End/Power ( red ) hard button to shutoff or wake up the device, the screen stays locked and won't respond.
I have tried soft reset, hard reset, different lock screens and what not. The only solution I found, besides sending it in, is to let the screen shut off by itself, and then wake it up with the Call/Send ( green ) hard button.
You can also try using the End/Power hard button to lock it, but then as long as you wake it with the Call/Send hard button it should be fine.
It has worked every time now. Try it and see if it helps! It's a little annoying but it saves money and insurance!
Going to repost this in all those previous listed threads to see if it helps anyone else.
Good Luck!
Happened to me the other day too. Mine was stock rom and t- mobile replaced it immediately. The new one came to my house within 16 hours and it runs silky smooth like mine never could have. I noticed it has a newer rom version than my original one.
rom 3.14.531.1
radio 2.15.50.11u
I found a work around, I have only tried this in android. Press the power button to turn the screen on, Then when it comes on it will not be responsive.
However if you turn the screen off then back on and try and unlock it it will respond and also i have noticed if the phone wakes it self up it will be responsive again.
Hello, basically I just got this phone and it seems like my vibraton/haptic feedback does not work anymore. At first I thought it was just the ROM ,salvage mod,I was running or the kernel but now I'm on an entirely different Sense based ROM and it is still not working. So now I am afraid it is a hardware problem. Can anyone help me out or is a new phone my only option?

First, let's confirm you have haptic feedback enabled. In a Sense ROM, it should be under Settings -> Sounds -> Vibrate Feedback.
If that's enabled, then you likely have hardware failure and yes, it will need to be replaced. That's why I ended up getting my first EVO replaced, in fact.
interesting. i have noticed from time to time haptic feedback stops responding but as of now its always come back. I am not sure what triggers it to stop and start but as time has gone has become just a minor annoyance.
The vibrator motor could be bad. Does it ever vibrate?

Yea sounds like there's a loose wire somewhere in there somehow. If you can get it to the store in it's non working condition I'm sure they'd replace it. Just remember to unroot first!!
oooo sounds interesting i drop my phone ALL the time so lose wires is probably the right answer for me lol
So every now and then my GNote has been acting really wierd, it's as if someone is plugging in and out an micro USB cable in quick successions. Now i have a youtube video of it, but im not allowed to post links so i can't show you it here, but search youtube for "0987789023572821" and it will pop up. I'm sorry for the lousy quality and lightning, i couldn't help it since the problem rarely presents itself when im ready with my camera...
So you know, i'm not touching the phone and nothing is plugged in, it's doing it all by itself.
Obviously i suspected that there was dirt in the USB jack, and i spent quite alot of time making it super-clean. I've also suspected the micro-usb assembly was somehow damaged so i opened the phone up and heated the solderposts to re-melt the solder on the micro usb jack. I really couldn't spot any visible damage on the jack itself or the micro usb assembly.
So either this has something to do with software or its damaged without me beeing able to see it, what do you guys think? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Also, is it possible to buy a new micro USB assembly for the GNote? I've been looking en ebay but can't find anything else then digitizers and screen replacements.
Thanks!
If its a software deal a new ROM will fix it, if not send to Samsung, I wouldnt accept a phone this good and expensive with any issues.

Thanks for the response guys.
I'm not using a custom kernel or rom or anything. The phone is from germany and come to think of it, i might have updated the firmware before this thing started to appear. I'll try to flash in a new firmware to see if that fixes it, thanks again
This seems to be kernel problem
can you confirm, kernel updated successfully?

Baseband
Kernel
Build version
I'm sorry, i didn't look what kernel version it was before i updated the firmware. However after i updated the firmware this problem has not occured once, so thanks again, it seemed like it was a problem with the software after all
Here's what it looks like AFTER the update, as i said i don't know what it was before sorry
Baseband - N7000XXLB2
Kernel - 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLC1-CL1003701

As the title states. Nexus 4 random power offs. Has anyone seen anything like this?
Here is the background info:
My parents have Nexus 4 phones as do I. All of our phones were ordered at the same time about 2 months or so ago when they became available again. All phones are the 16GB version. All phones bone stock with just OTA updates, not unlocked or rooted other than how they are shipped. All using T-Mobile prepaid plans.
My phone and my father's seem fine. My mom's however seems to shutdown on its own. It is random. Initially I thought that it may be an issue where she isn't used to a smart phone and isn't charging it enough. It happens though at times while it is connected to the charger. It also has happened while carrying it off the charger.
One odd thing is that when they got the phone they brought them to my house and dropped them off to have me set them up. One had the plastic screen protector with the printing on it from the factory the other didn't. I don't know which is which though now. It is a 50/50 shot if this is the one.
I have been around android since the G1 days and run the same phone. I can't think of a setting on the phone that would power it down at a certain time or period of time. She really doesn't have much for apps and is a very light user.
Not sure what to try but I was thinking about doing a wipe of the phone to see if it helps.
Anyone else have any ideas? If the wipe doesn't help the only other thing I can think of is that there is a physical issue with the phone.
I haven't seen this on my phone but there was a period of time where HD Widgets on my N7 would cause a reboot. That was fixed with an app update. This isn't a case where the device reboots. It is a complete shutdown which I find odd. So I have seen an app cause issues kind of like this. For the most part the apps that she has on her phone, I also have on mine. Well I have way more but there really isn't anything on her phone that I am not also running.
I should add that she has the phone in a TPU case. As we all do. My case design is a little different than theirs but they have cutouts for the buttons. So it isn't a case where the case is pressing on the power button. That could be an issue with my case as it covers the power button but I haven't had that issue.
Thanks
Sounds like it might be a defective battery...

That sounds kind of questionable (fishy) to me... I also have the 16GB version, and I also did the OTA when I got it. But to be honest the stock OS lasted only about an hour before I rooted and started trying out custom ROMs I have not had the issue you're describing though. How are the results from your factory reset?
Also, would you consider putting on a stock-based custom ROM (such as rasbean vanilla) for your mother's phone? If the problem is software based then a reset or a new ROM might yield different results. But if the problem persists it might be hardware and I'd suggest you contact Google about servicing.

I don't want to root and have my mom run a modified ROM. They live about a half hour from me so I haven't tried a wipe of the phone yet and because of the distance I don't want to deal with the issues that sometimes come up when you go with modified ROMs when I am not there. She is a very basic user and this is the first smartphone for my father and mother. Keep in mind they are in their early 70s and not really that strong on the tech side of things. I have to get some time to run over there and take a look at it. Maybe later next week.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I think if a wipe doesn't help I will talk to Google. A search really didn't show much other than some people that were seeing a random reboot issue. I have seen apps doing that.
I have been through their warranty replacement process and it is a bit of a PITA. I am on my 3rd Nexus 7 due to hardware issues with the first 2. My N4 and my fathers have been rock solid.
While I have run custom ROMs in the past, I usually run stock until I find a need that requires me to root. Eventually I will probably root and go with a custom ROM on my N4 but

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm giving my parents my old LG P990 phone and I just put an AOKP rom on it. I also installed Nova Launcher for them and configured it so there's just one texting app and one calling app the one and only one homescreen. No dock either, just in case they click something by accident or get lost in the app drawer
Since you have the same phone as your mom, a self-less workaround would just be to give her yours (pre-configured), and then you can fiddle around with the problematic one until you find a decent solution. :good:

Hmm. That is a good idea. The PITA part would be to get everything loaded from my phone to hers. I really wish I could run Titanium backup without root as it would make it super easy to move the apps over. Though I don't have that much loaded on my phone. Things that are a pain to set up have configuration export methods like Tasker. It would rule out the end user being the source of the issue. I don't think that is it though. If we swap and it goes away, then I can consider the wipe as the solution. If the problem moves to me then it is a physical issue and call Google. If the problem persists with her, I load all her apps on the phone I carry as well to see if I start to have the issue or it becomes a training issue. The thing I like about this the most is that it is a clear process to rule out several things. I can go over there and sit with the phone but if it doesn't power off when I am there I don't gain much other than spending some time with my parents.
I don't think this is an issue but I did have to provide my IMEI# when doing the activations. In the past though on T-Mobile I have handed phones down to others and all we did was a SIM swap. I would imagine that is the case here.
Oh and one thing I did leave out. They were using their old cell phone chargers on the N4 phones. I told them to swap chargers and use the ones that came with the phone. The old ones may not put out enough power and the phone could in theory run down to the point where it shuts off and slowly charge from that point and I don't think it would turn back on. Keep in mind a retired user who just had a knee replacement so she is at home more often than not.
Did you find out the cause? I have the same issue happened twice today

While i am not stock, I did notice this one time with my phone... like extremely LOW to the point i was pressing the phone HARD against my ear to hear.
Solution? I went ahead and flashed Paranoid Android 3.56 and flash the Louder volume MOD in the themes and apps section. That fixed my issue, I also know that not all of you will want to root, and that this SUCKS. but try to restart the phone.
Just root guys, this phone was made for that

Oh actually the issue I'm talking about is different. The ear piece volume is fine, but whenever I talk to someone on the phone, they can barely hear me unless I use speaker phone. I was actually using Paranoid Android, and I was being told I can barely be heard. So I flashed back to factory to see if it was a ROM issue. Sadly it wasn't.. On factory ROM I can still barely be heard.

Got my nexus 4 recently and i am also facing the same issue with some callers...not sure if this is a network issue or there's something wrong with my phone. Did the replacement solve your problem?

I'm having the same problem as well. Just received my Nexus 4 last week. They especially can't hear me if I'm speaking to them through my car speakers (3.5mm connection, not bluetooth). Wasn't a problem at all in the same vehicle with my Galaxy Nexus. Please let us know if the replacement worked better.

I am also having the same problem...my girl keeps shouting that she can not hear me..at first i thought some problem with network but than some of ma friends said same thing...whats the option now..?? i am from india and i imported it from US so cnt send back there..is anyone found any solution..??
I tried using headsets and the results were pretty much better..
Wish I could help. Just had to RMA mine today. Completely stock, no mic. Works when plugged in, sometimes, but for the most part no audio. When it is plugged in, the wife says I sound like I'm trapped in a bottle lol echo and static.
I had the same problem when I was running full stock. It was really annoying to hear "I can't hear you..." every other sentence.
This won't help if you do not want to root or run custom ROMs but since I switched to PA 3.56 and Matr1x kernel the people on the other end of the line haven't been complaining. I imagine for whatever reason it was fixed would apply to most custom ROMs and Kernels. I'll actually test this out this weekend and edit my post afterwards.
Edit: I made some calls to friends on PA/Matr1x/Radio .48 and everything seemed fine. I flashed full stock and called back the same people and only one person said they heard a noticeable decrease in the quality. That person also knew I was testing different settings on my phone so maybe they were messing with me.

i also switched to custome rom (Carbon) and have not had any complaint regarding the issue..still will confirm in sometime if the problem exist or not
Bumping an old thread ...
So my gf started complaining that she could barely hear me when I was using my Klipsch S4A headphones to talk--while in the car and in a quiet room. I was on CM10.1 at the time and I had read complaints from others with the same/similar issue on other ROMs, even stock/unrooted. I chalked it up to 4.2 and hoped 4.3 would fix it.
It appears that isn't the case. I just sacrificed root so I could flash a clean install of 4.3 (new bootloader and radio included) hoping it would at least mean I could have normal conversations with my gf again while the devs cook up CM10.2. How bummed am I to find out that the issue persists. I just called her from my office with my headset on and she said I "still sound far away." This is really frustrating. I never had this issue on my GNex.

I wish someone comes up with a solution for this.. I was hoping 4.3 would solve this issue also. Some say its cause of the noise reduction, isn't there anyway we could disable noise reduction?! I remembered I had that option on CM10 my i9300 but not on nexus 4 build.. This is really an issue for me since i always use headset for phone calls.. I was wondering if the original Nexus 4 headset would solve this issue.

What radio are you using? I changed to the .33/.84 hybrid here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2412052 and callers can hear me much more clearly.

Hi guys,
i found 2 "solutions" which didnt work for Nexus 4:
1: typing *#*#3646633#*#* into the phone to enter the engineering mode. "Should" work for all Android, does not for Nexus 4
2: the App "MobileUncle". Does only work for MTK Chipsets (Nexus 4 has another one)
my question: is there something like the Engineering mode for the Nexus 4 ?
Same issue on Nexus 5
FYI, the nexus 5 has the low input volume gain when using 3.5mm headphones with inline mics. I don't understand what LGs problem is with 3.5mm connections or why it was never tested.
started a discussion on in here
Any solution yet???
I have the exact same Issue, Android 4.4.2 and the issue is not fixed weird that only Nexus 4 has it. I am like you trying to find an app or a way to work around the issue, tried to install other ROM using rom manager and phone when SLOW as heck so no idea how to fix it yet, loud speaker to every single call is not the way to go
