I have looked and looked but probably not in the right places... I have a rooted Evo 4G with froyo 2.2. I used unrevoked forever and know how to get the s-on back... I just would like to update the phone to the newest update and root it again. Is it still necessary to get s-on back then load the original ruu rom? I would think I just need to remove the unrevoked then update. The phone works I just want newer firmware on it... My apologies if I did not look for my response properly, but all I see is a reload the IMG file... I dont want to set back to factory... just wanted to post this question. Thank You

There is absolutely no reason to unroot. All you have to do is flash a custom stock ROM based on the newest firmware. A whole bunch are available for flashing in the Development forum.
It is much easier to leave the phone S-OFF and then either flash a rooted stock ROM or run a stock RUU. Then all you would need to do to obtain full root again (with stock ROM) would be to install a custom recovery and then flash a superuser.zip file, rather than turning the phone back S-ON and then going through a potentially complicated procedure just to reroot and possibly turn the phone back S-OFF.
Thank You guys sounds like a custom rom is the way to go... it would get rid of that IQAgent also... I'll look around for a nice looking rooted rom.

The problem that I am having right now is actually getting my Hero back to stock only. I recently searched the forums and found a few guides here and there to get back to Android 1.5, but the problem is that I follow those and then I try to downgrade and I get told only that I have a bootloader issue.
Now the only thing I could think of or know right now is that the bootloader is wrong. Which is keeping me from going back to original stock for the Hero.
Is there a possible way for me to fix this? I have tried many things, but not sure if any of you around here have some suggestions. One thing I wanted to ask and see if some one would have is whether you would be willing to upload your original backup for you phone.
If you were, then I assume that would possibly fix the bootloader issue.
Keep in mind I am no phone expert and I am just trying to throw out suggestions.
I hope that I can get some help!

Is there a way for me to get the HBoot back to the original and not to what it is right now?

Depends, if you never ran the 2.1 ruu then your hboot is still stock. Also, running the 1.56 ruu will flash the stock hboot (only an option if you have the older hboot already though).
If you have run the 2.1 ruu.exe then your hboot has been updated and you will be unable to run the 1.56 ruu. No fix yet, but maybe after the official 2.1 ruu is released.
Hold vol down on initial power on to get into fastboot. If you see Hboot 1.41.0000 then you have the original. 1.47.0000 is the 2.1 test rom hboot.
I flashed the leak when it was released and that caused the HBoot to upgrade. I will just wait until the official upgrade is out and for now I will be using a custom ROM.
Use damage control 2.07.2 stock if you want the closest thing to the sprint 2.1.
I just recently rooted my phone with the new methods and also did the bootloader mod as well. My question is what would happen if I flashed the stock RUU of the latest OTA on my phone that has the 1.49.0200 S=OFF bootloader and Amon_RA's recovery installed? I know it would un root the phone but would the custom recovery and engineering bootloader be intact still? Basically what I want to do is have a stock ROM with superuser support. Thats it. OTA notifications would still show up but I would just ignore them. I'm guessing if the recovery and bootloader were not touched by the RUU I would just flash my overclocking-kernel-v3 and EngTools to root though recovery.
Thanks in advanced. You guys are great. Keep up the great work. You have my full support.
If you want a stock ROM with SU just get plain jane. Or install SU by putting the .apk on the phone.
Why not use a rom like Ivan's or Plain Jane?

I have this obsession with having things as close to stock as possible. I would just prefer the "stock" way even with the apps like Amazon MP3 and other stuff still installed. I also just wanted to know what are some limitations of the engineering bootloader like if I did upgrade to a new official OTA in the future.

If you flashed the current RUU it wouldn't mess with hboot so you would be able to flash a recovery and add root to the rom.
And if the update thats coming doesn't mess with hboot you should be able to add root to it later, but we don't know if it will mess with hboot.
It would be very easy to simply keep everything the same in the OTA rom and just add su
also im pretty sure u cant use the RUU if you have the bootloader 1.49.200 because the bootloader on the RUU is 1.49.000 so its lower it wont go.

I'd suggest you actually take a look at the ROMs suggested. They might surprise you how "stock" they are.
I rooted my phone back when I had HBOOT 1.47, and it brought me to 1.49.200 for root, and I flashed the RUU and it brought me back down to 1.49.000.
So there seems to be some confusion about what is necessary to receive the expected OTA. I just applied s-off and reverted to .79 bootloader. I don't have all the stock apps though. I have removed City ID, Tweet/Peep, and changed the boot animation. I'm wondering if I can still install the OTA.
yes u can. here is how

Thanks those are very clear instructions. Right now I have 2.1 update 1, stock radio, and hboot 7.9. As I said I have removed CityID, Tweet, changed the boot animation, and I still have some root only apps installed such as wireless tethering. Are you saying I can receive the OTA with this setup or that I have to flash the stock rom again (or I guess I can reinstall the apps and original boot animation.)
Sorry. Tired, I wasn't reading carefully. I see according to your instructions I need to flash back back to stock and urooted rom to accept the update. Then I can reflash and root with unrevocked. Kind of a shame. If I wait will I still be able to get the update? I'm guessing someone will grab it and can flash later. I would rather just do it all at one sitting.

wait no. my guide has that because that is the state i and many other users started in. if u have s-off, then u can simply start at step 3 out here

as long as u have stock recovery and hboot, it doesnt matter if u have customized ur current rom, the RUU will simply override all that.
So having root and some customizing doesn't matter as long as I have s-off and stock radio and h boot? Awesome! Thanks
.

no, u need stock recovery, s-off and hboot, rom/radio can be custom.
Wow, there really is a lot of misinformation going around. At least a couple threads say you need stock radio. If the OTA is really coming soon I might as well wait for that to update the radio.
Thanks.
I wanna wipe radio/pri/prl/rom/custom recovery/EVERYTHING completely to a stock 2.2 froyo sprint rom WITHOUT root and custom recovery.
After i return my phone to 2.2 like i just got it from sprint...
Then i want to full root it and have the new 1.8 RA recovery...
I guess whatever custom rom i go back to from there, i'll decide.. but for now
I want a piece of mind that my phone is properly working like it should from factory.
Thanks for any assistance on what proper steps i should take.

Firstly, how did you root your phone? I see your join date is from '07, so you aren't a newbie that came on here in June when you got your Evo (like me.....lol). If you rooted the "old school" way using toast's method, all you have to do is flash a Sprint RUU (any Sprint RUU, as it will prompt you to the an OTA update to 2.2 even if you flash an older RUU) and your phone goes back to stock. If you rooted with Unrevoked Forever that keeps S-off, then it may be more complicated. I wouldn't be able to tell you because I've personally never used any of the Unrevoked team's stuff.
oh, sorry for lack of pre-rooting details.
yea launch phone with(at the time) 2.1, and i used that 3 button OTA simpleroot.
can i flash the sprint ruu 2.2, then use the new unrevoked?
do i need to wipe any details with ##786#?
Alright, so today I tried unrooting my htc evo using the two step guide found here on the forums.
First I set my s-on using the method described, and then when I tried to update it said "update failed" and something about the firmware being too new.
I have no way of returning back to root right now because my unrevoked doesn't seem to recognize my phone right now. I'm on android 2.2 right now and anything less, my phone won't update to.
I think the only way of fixing this would be the newest signed, unrooted 2.3 update. Does anybody here have it? It should be about 180MB around and named PC36IMG.
I've looked pretty much everywhere for it. I really need to unroot for warrenty purposes.
thanks in advance, so much
Here you go...it was in dev section

In order to run a 2.2 pc36img, your radio and hboot have to match the ones in the zip
Yeah, I used unrevoked. Hopefully this works, if not, I have no idea what I'm going to do.
if you flash the 4.53 pc36img.zip in hboot you should be good. lemme know
do I need to follow the entire ruu guide or can I just place an ruu update in the root of my sd card and load it from hboot?
everything went great. Thanks!
