I currently have my Wi-Fi broken and I found an App to reverse tether my kindle, but it needs the "Thetering & Portable Hotspot" option to be enabled.
I live outside the US so it will be hard and expensive to send back my Kindle Fire for replacement. I already contacted Customer Support and they told me it is a hardware issue and they can replace my device. The problem is that in my country, I would need to pay $100 approx to get back my kindle (importing fees).
I really love my kindle and even if I have to use a USB cable to connect to the internet (I have the Kindle 3 long USB cable), I would like to keep enjoying its internet capabilities.
So, if you know how to enable the Tethering option in CM7 or CM9 I would really be happy and grateful. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE =)
You can reverse tether your device its possible
You have to download reverse tethering
Tools and then u can connect through usb cable.

Thank you so much!!!
I guess there are more options to usb tether my devices... I ll find them (I'll like to use an easier method (like THIS) because sometimes my brother (5 years old) use my kindle and watch videos from youtube and he has difficulty reading english (after all he only speaks spanish).
So... thank you very much again, you deserve it =)
The method recommended previously isn't compatible with Google Play (and many other apps) because it requires wifi (or 3G) to be enabled.
I'm looking for a ROM that has the "Thetering & Portable Hotspot" menu option (in wireless settings). It has been removed because devs didnt think it will be ever needed... until now. That option is required to use the this Reverse Tether app
I have already tried with:
CM7 (Standing in the shoulders of Giants).
Barebones.
Sblood86's CM7.
CM9 Energy.
I have found a patch made for the Motorola Xoom:

Yes, it looks like tether options are disabled on wifi-only devices. Which probably makes sense in general but I have a special use case.
I got it working by adding in the config_tether_*_regex entries to device/moto/wingray/overlay/frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml
Patch attached if anyone else runs into this problem.

I don't know how to apply/adapt this patch for the Kindle Fire (CM7 or CM9). So if you know how, I'll be glad to try it out. Thanks.

Doubtful that any 3G USB devices will ever work on android tablets. You are better off getting a 3g hotspot device or something that can tether via bluetooth.
werd my work pays for my Verizon Mifi so I have internets wherever I go, just coming back from a 12 hour drive on vacaction, it's a lovely device to carry around with me.

So I guess it's a matter of time
Guys, one question bit off topic:
I was waiting for this tablet that will come out tomorrow here in Portugal.
But if it doesnt have USB on the Tablet (for usb internet stick) neither sim card internet, how can i connect it to internet without the dock?
Yes, i want to buy the dock because thats also why i want this tablet, but my point is: if i wanna use google maps to visit places and have live points of interest, pictures and directions do i need to carry the dock?
If anyone with the tablet could make this clear to me i would appreciate.
You can use your Android Mobile as a WiFi hotspot. If you have one.
Yes connectivity ONLY works with dock. Or use tethering with your phone + eee pad

Has anyone tried applying the changes from the first thread to a Transformer ?
Now we can safely debrick devices with NVFlash I may give it a try.
-- EDIT --
OK, after doing a Nandroid backup, I've individually backed up the files affected and applied everything from the 3g-a500-v1.zip file apart from build.prop.
For build.prop I've backed up the original and added the following lines at the bottom.
WW_epad.3g=true
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libhuawei-ril.so
rild.libargs=-d /dev/ttyUSB2
ro.pad.features.modem=true
to the end. (I'm not sure about the "WW_epad" bit of that first line)
After changes, tablet seems to boot OK and wifi networking is unaffected.
However it turns out today is the day I DIDN'T put my huawei E160 modem in my bag. DOH
Actually trying it with the modem will have to wait till I get home from work.
To be continued...
Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

i am actually tethering thru my epic to post this. The wifi tether is screwy for our phones. I use SFR1.2 and geno1.1final. 3g works, 4g causes a instant reboot on the phone, but it works in infrastructer mode without issue.

Can you post those APK's or the instruction please, I have an Epic as well.
I use wifi tether to connect my thunderbolt to my gt10.1. With version 3 I have it set to softap (master) not ad hoc. Access control is on and I have the routing fix box checked for htc phones. I tethered well over 1gb this morning with no problems

Check the android development section of the epic section.. SFR1.2 is the rom, Genocide 1.1final is the kernel. They include wifi tether that works for the epic in the rom..

Ok..finally followed the guide here and replaced my wpa_supplicant using the links provided. I have wireless tether v3.0pre14 working with no authentication. I am now going to play with authentication and may back down to pre11 since you had good luck with it. I am surfing solid with no drops...video streaming is fairly slow but thats to be expected I would assume. I am running rooted 10.1 retail 32MB with Verizon Droid Eris rooted running GB 2.3.3.
Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!
Can some one walk me through how to tether to my HTC Thunderbolt? Thanks in advance.

Tether to or from your HTC Thunderbolt? What have you read about it?
Also are you stock or rooted on both devices
Im rooted on the thunderbolt, but not on the xoom. I know i have to do bluetooth tethering, but i dont know how to do that on my xoom or my laptop. I would like to be able to use both at the same time.

ok no problem but why didn't you just google this info... Not trying to be a hard ass but just so you know these forums are helpful but people like to see a little effort made to at least help themselves...
Now with that said what rom are you using on your Thunderbolt since my boy has one and BAMF I believe comes with android tether on it.. If not a quick google search for wifi tether - comes up with this
Now you download and install that to your phone and turn it on and it will act as a hotspot which you then connect your Xoom too.
Now second choice - a quick google search of tablet tethering brought up PDAnet - which is on the market and tells you how to set it up. Now there is a twist with them since bluetooth tethering is tricky and you have to restart your device to get it working after initially connecting and disconnecting.
Ok third choice for you laptop - Download PDAnet from there website for laptops and then download PDANet from Android Market, its different than PDANet Tablet
Hope that all helps and like I said for future reference probably any question you have has been asked already... hit up google first for your answer before posting in here... No disrespect just trying to help
Edit: That version of Wifi tether also uses Bluetooth tethering... but you must turn on bluetooth tether first prior to pairing devices...
i did google it

My laptop will connect to the phone, but the wifi xoom wont find it. Something to do with the xoom wont reconize an ad hoc network? But the link you posted for the android tethering worked. Thanks

Tethering to the Xoom on an ad-hoc requires you to root and then replace some system files on the Xoom.
I have never had a problem connecting to my Thunderbolt (CM7, stock kernel) with my Xoom over WiFi, rooted or when it was stock. If you have CM7 just turn on tethering in the CM settings menu and you're good to go, if not, then this info is probably useless.
My pops is currently without a way to use his wifi on his desktop (fios, he needs a wire or a card)
If i root his kindle and install cm7 , would i be able to pass his kindle's connection (wifi) to his computer via usb
I have done this in the past with phones but its my fathers new kindle and hes not sure he wants to keep it in the first place yet so i dont want to leave him with a device he cant return, he said he would deff keep it if it had full android and he can use it to access the net on his cpu for now

The tethering support does not currently show up in my CM7 install.
I have no idea if taking wifi and running it over USB is workable. However, an old router can do the trick for you: get one that run dd-wrt from a friend or something, and you can run it as a bridge. Not exactly easy, but works cheaper.

It's not just workable, it's the default behavior of the CM7 USB tethering if you have a Wifi connection
Why not just pick up a $20 wifi adapter?

Hey all you guys at XDA, am new here to this forum but I've been through the forums (as a guest) looking for answers to some simple questions I had about android...
I have a XOLO tegra note, basically like all tegra notes i guess and I was looking for a way to share my pc's internet with my tegra over usb. many apps do this I know but i guess all require "USB tethering" option to be set to ON. This isn't there in the tegra and probably because it's the model without a sim slot. I have been googling around and saw that the nexus 7 could have it enabled if you fiddled with the kernel/rom while it was decompiled. also there was something in there about RNDIS options....
Has anyone else tried to enable this option on their Tegra? Forget portable hotspot but reverse tethering would work awesomely....
Thanks!

I had tried reverse tethering on lg optimus one and it works BUT google play/market does not work, you will just be able to view play store but it will not download any app.
So reverse tethering is useless. Just buy a tp-link usb wifi adapter, available at INR 550. You can even sit in your hall and watch movies on your pc by windows sharing feature.
But reverse tether works?!

Thanks asratxda! But as to reverse tethering being useless... I don't agree .. See I got the S3 mini and play store did work with reverse tether... I don't know abt other apps but the one I used had an option to make it seem like my 3G was on... the reverse tether app even suggested that some apps need this....

Agree! I tried PDANET+ on my phone too. It worked of course... But all such programs require the :USB TETHERING and PORTABLE HOTSPOT " option to be visible and selectable. This option is NOT visible on the tablet as it is not a SIM enabled device. But there is a way on nexus 7 to make the option appear. As i said in my first post, it requires decompiling the OS, changing some stuff and recompiling and flashing.... wanted to know if anyones done it on tegra note...
Thanks!
I think I found a solution....
With a little luck and a prayer, I think I got this to work....
