So I wanted to try my hand at porting roms, and all the roms I saw that I wanted to try and port are gsm roms.
Is there a guide on how to port from gsm to cdma? I can't seem to find any guide for this
also, in which environment is it best to do this?
under linux or windows?
I guess the environment would depend on how deep your digging or if your going to compile from source, I've always used windows but that's because I've never even seen a Linux setup(start flaming now) unless in was in a virtual machine. There are many great windows tools out there to help along the way, one of my most used is m10editor and DSIXDA Kitchen..then some 7zip when I need to look in zips without extracting. Also on the GSM ports as of right now there would be no Wimax? I know last time I ported gsm 4G didn't work along with some other things. I just woke up tho and my phone hasn't been charged in about 3 days so ill hop on the pc in a bit and find a Sense to Sense port guide for you, that should work if It's a Sense ROM. I gave up on AOSP/MIUI a long time ago but I hope what I find you shortly works man

ill also PM you a guide that i have saved as a draft in my gmail box(thats where i take all my android notes lol) its for miui so i hope with the 3 guides( 2 posted and one PMED) you will get soemthing good, the only reason i dont have that guide posted here is because i didnt write it, it was pulled from some random google search one day and helped me get some issues fixed...anyways man heres all i can find right now, if ANYTHING pops in my head ill be sure to come back and let you know....happy devving

Ever since i got my hands on an Android i been testing like crazy looking for that perfect rom. Not until recently cyanogens roms were a nightmare for me. Btw, i have a mytouch 3G black T-mobile USA version. I have it loaded with the RAv1.4 or is it RAv1.2, anyway the cyanogen and many other roms ( i suspect its the SPL) have a screen lit problem. after i put the phone to sleep, when it wakes up it has the big black blur. Cyanogen recently fixed it! and his roms have been awesome until the last release. No more tethering, no more apps like that one fabolous task killer app with the blue icon. Once again im sure there is good reasoning..
I dont need smart ass replies or answers to anything i read above. this thread is for others like me that just want to kno which rom is awesome for their phone. like me, they dont want to click thru every single release thread with 10,000 pages. lets get it started with one that im loving!
1) RaiderX303 Micro Hero v2.0
Everything is FAST AND SMOOTH
No "extra" apps included
Market doesnt seem to work ( i only tried to dl astrid..not dling)
SO FAST its worth it for me to use for a few days even week(s).
and i mean fast as most hero apps i uninstall in a hour.
I will update this thread as i go
NOTE: writing this was purely out of my boredom/lunch break. i do not attempt to put in an extra effort to get things right like that name of the blue app that kills my tasks(damn what is it calllledd) . im simply venting/commenting on roms i try out as im a rom fiend just like linux distros. so if your using the same phone as iam ...come back
update
Market does work just not astrid.
Found wifi tethering on market.
I'm sorry, but what's the meaning of this thread?
my own thread logging up which rom i tried and liked/ what didnt work. is this a problem? or am i suppose to go to every roms own thread to post my opinion?

Yes you should post your opinion in each thread. This has nothing to do with development. At the very least post this in general.
thanks for the right "direction"
mods is it possible to move this to general? thanks
Hey all,
I posted this same thread on another forum but it's not as active as this one so I'm posting here for better results. Anyways, I did a hell of a lot of googling on all sorts of random things, and after hours and hours of trial and error just to get my damn Windows 7 to recognize the Hero, I was well on my way to rooting. After I had rooted my phone, I, by default, ended up going with the MoDaCo 2.0 ROM core update. I just recently downloaded the extension update, and basically I'm just kinda sitting here, thinking to myself, "Now what?" I guess my real question is, what exactly have I done? I understand that rooting the phone basically puts in a free-to-use-however-you-want sort of sense, and the custom ROM gives you better performance and more to offer than the factory Hero ROM, but seeing so many posts of all sorts of people doing this and that and the other thing on their phones, I feel like I'm missing out on the what-to-do-next memo. If anyone has any good advice for a new Android user to look forward and almost like a guide on Things You Should Do After You've Rooted and Installed MoDaCo 2.0, I'd appreciate it.
As for apps. I currently have, use, and enjoy these (any other recommendations?):
Ak Notepad
Astro File Manager
Spare Parts
TasKiller
Twidroid
Also looking for the consolidated power settings widget I see randomly everywhere. It's so bad ass looking and convenient but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I know Beautiful Widgets had it but HTC sent them a C&D so it got taken down.
Another thing. This stuff I read about being able to get apps that aren't normally in Market after you root, what's up with that? And which ones of these are must-haves?
Haha I apologize beforehand for this thread having so many questions but to consolidate it all to one question, what exactly should I do now that my phone is rooted and loaded with custom rom 2.0, and what are some must-haves and must-knows for a noob looking to eventually become a pro at this stuff?
I just rooted my phone a while ago
So far I've loaded fresh ROM 1.1
found some sweet themes to change stuff
I recommend you go to this website: www[.]geekfor.me (no .com) and check out the pre-kitchen v 0.2. it allows you to easily run command line stuff from a really really easy to use GUI
he's also got a few themes and stuff to download
the customization is about the most useful thing I've found from root. apparently there are some good tethering apps and stuff, but I've never really gotten them to work
Thanks I appreciate that. I'm gonna check some of that stuff out. Can anyone guide me in the direction of a good beginner's guide to ap2sd and do I need to install a radio update or something after I've installed the ROM? Or is that just for GSM? I'm having trouble finding a good collection of beginners guides on google for this stuff so I apologize if all my questions can be answered by other threads in this forum.

First I would say read everyhting you can in this forum. I have learned a lot about my phone just by reading the treads.
second and I cant belive no one said this yet. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT do anything with the radio. as far as I know flashing the radio is the only way found so far to totally brick this phone.
apps2sd is automatic with modaco's rom as long as your sd card is partitioned for it.
must have apps are really something that is subjective. I just googled best android apps and got a ton of info to go through and found a few apps that I really wanted or thaat I just thought where cool.
good luck and happy moding
Buying my vibrant on Monday. Am not new to flashing however its going to be with new hardware all around. Pretty sure the root process will be a breeze. I'm familiar with Mac but this will be the first time using it for modding so any tips for that would be appreciated. Know about TT backup got it covered. Need to know will CM7 due in the ROM department for little tweaks like led notifications. Know I can check the changlog but come on guys were all pals right. Any noob/news flashes I might need to know other than that much appreciated.

First off make sure your getting a vibrant 3g, not a 4g. The 4g has minimal development support and the roms will not work vice versa.
You said your familiar with a Mac? Doesn't that mean you own one? If so then no ODIN for you, which is the software you need to put your phone back to stock... So go pick up a PC.... Jeez people and Macs these days... jankkkkk.
Further, CM7 is pretty good, it's stable for me and a whole slew of people..
Here is my link on a guide on how to put CM7 on the vibrant, assuming you know how to at least root and use an android phone minimally, doing everything shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes max.

When I said I was familiar meaning have used before. My pc is out of comish ill be using a friends. She has a vibrant also. Think hers is 3g crap. And dont jank on my friend. Her fathers a Dentist. Apple a day you know. Read the vibrant CM7 tab log does that matter. I have a G2x. No problem tricking that one out.
I have been searching on how to port ROMs from one device over to another but i have not yielded many results and most of the info i came across
seems a little hard to follow. I was looking at a sense 4.0 ROM for the Desire HD and wanted to port it over to our HD2 to test out its function or lack
of function. The issue i'm running into is i've not came across any (device specific) information on how to port over the ROM i'm looking at. Here is the
ROM i'm looking to port. This would be my first try at this so i'm not sure how successful i'll be but i definitely wish to give it a go.
I've already looked at all four suggested threads before opening this thread and did a search on Google and XDA. I also looked on several other
forums to which i have not seen any useful info on porting for the HD2. Any info or links to a how to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It is not easy. It takes lots of work. But I will give you the theory. At least to the best of my knowledge.
1) Find rom you want to port..
2) Find similar rom that already works for your phone (Android 2.3.7 or 4.0.3 etc etc..)
3) Break down both roms
4) Remove drivers from the rom you are porting
5) Copy drivers from working rom to porting rom
6) Rewrite build.prop if the driver names are different
7) Repack and test..
Hope that helps some!!
great i also want to do it
I'm going to give it a go. I doubt i will release it on the forums just because i wouldn't be able to keep up with fixing bugs and stuff like that. I would try it out and see how it runs, maybe if it runs without to much headache i might but i think i'm getting way ahead of myself. first thing is to just read and re-read intill i think i have everything down. Then i'll begin the hard parts.
No offense, but it isn't easy. I hope you will be able to make a port. But in my opinion if I were trying to port something and even got it to boot I'd be feeling pretty great about myself.. lol
If it boots you're doing good!

No offense taken. I know its not going to be easy by any means but I still would like to give it a go. Considering the Desire is pretty close to the HD2 is the only reason why I'm even trying it out. Luckily I have the premium warranty protection to cover lost, stolen and water damage phones, or in this case a software mess up if something goes wrong.

Now recruiting everyone, and i mean everyone from devs, themers, rom porters, testers, everyday users, everyone that loves their old phone and wants to see the development live on.
The only requirement is to work toward the common goal of seeing our old HTC devices live on.
Team Legacy: Greasing the Wheels for HTC Android Legacy Devices.
We may not have the newest, spankiest devices, but by god we just wont quit.
If anyone can think up a logo or a new motto, please do.
Between the eris, the hero, and the heroc, we are all in this together.
I'm down for anything I can help with, primarily testing. I know my way around a build.prop and stuff like that, but I'm a beginner at theming and making roms. I'm willing to learn though. I have sitting in front of me right now the grand daddy of legacy HTC phones, the G1, Hero CDMA, Evo 4g, and my baby Galaxy Nexus
If anyone wants to buy my two Herocs for the effort pm me. They are also posted in the marketplace

were glad to have you on board sir. welcome to team legacy. we appreciate your being here and anything you can do to help out is greatly appreciated!
So whats the game plan? I've used most of those roms you've ported on my nexus before. Do you want to pick one and we can work together to get it running sweet on the hero.
I noticed that you're having having problems with the size of the task switcher windows in a few of your roms. You might want to check out the web os mods like this http://rootzwiki.com/topic/19142-mod-port-webcm9-04-webos-like-app-switcher-3912-cm9aokp/ . It should have only the code relating to the task switcher. I'm wondering if it's trying to use a too high a resolution for the hero.

i would say the biggest gameplan right now at the moment is aroma. with aroma we can make all devices work off one rom, which is a huge goal of mine, to bring all the roms i've ported to all the other older htc devices like the eris, g1, and hero.
im down for any kind of collaboration you would like. thanks for the tip about the webos task switcher, im taking a look at it right now and if it works ill throw it in all my ics roms and give you credit.
have anything particular in mind for more collaboration? we can only run so sweet lol until our edge is met, and that edge is hardware acceleration.
edit: im not having luck yet with the webos task switcher, ill keep looking at it
I just used aroma for the first time a couple of days ago on my evo 4g and I will never go near it again. I was flashing decks reloaded and it comes with aroma. I booted to twrp did my usual wipe everything 5 times. I started to flash the rom, aroma launched asked me what options I wanted, It flashed and said successful. I rebooted and it booted to the splash screen for about 10 secs vibrated rebooted to the splash screen, this repeats endlessly.
Now heres where it really screwed me. I can get to the bootloader and recovery, but aroma killed my USB connectivity and my access to my SD card. This has been reported as happening on Evo 4g's before( only when they first came out). The way to fix it is to enter some commands on a terminal emulator on the phone when its booted up. Or flash a radio update through bootloader (didnt work) Because aroma borked my rom install I can't boot into my rom or flash another because of my lack of SD card access and no ADB. My only option left is to flash a factory unrooted and locked factory image via a pc36img through the bootloader. Thats for a day when I'm feeling brave, If this persists through relocking and unrooting that phone is done.
I've flashed hundreds of roms, and rooted, unrooted and down some downright dangerous **** on my G1. I've never bricked a device before, bootloops, and borked recoveries sure. Aroma is dangerous, and I personally will never use it again.
I think the key is too slim down ICS as much as possible. Most of those Roms you ported are pretty fat( at least on my Nexus). Prolly taking cm9 and stripping it might be the best bet. Sometime this week end I'll download and start screwing around with one of them.
If you can find a Jellybean rom to port that might be where its really at. Project butter makes my Nexus crazy fast! I don't get any of the slow downs that I did in ICS.

wow i guess if i upgrade to an evo 4g like i planned i'll avoid aroma like the plague.
i've been working on slimming down my ics roms, i already have miui 4.0.4 slimmed down about as far as its gonna go without resizing pngs and such since im no good at that. i have an aokpwfs38 slim down ready also, i just havnt had the chance to post it.
if you would like, i need eligorom and cm9 slimmed, feel free to do that if you want.
also check out shelnutt's jb port. its pretty nice, a huge improvement over ics even on the heroc.
Would anyone be willing to swap my htc hero gsm for a htc hero cdma?
I'll join. I used to be a dev on SDX for the moment and the intercept. I've ported joyos 1.2.2 currently to the heroc.
