[Q] Cyanogenmod and rooting - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

in order to put cyanogenmod onto a nook color do i have to root it, if i am doing the method using an sd card? if i dont root before i try to put cyanogenmod onto it what would happen?

No, you can install to an SD card without rooting the internal system. It will boot from the SD card if present. You can hold down the n button during booting and elect to boot to the unrooted nook system when desired. Or remove the SD card and reboot for the unaltered Nook experience.

1. if you put a custom ROM on your NC, you do NOT need to root it.
2. if you plan to run CM7 off the uSD, do so. The internal system (OS and kernel) is UNTOUCHED. Safe to go.

[Q] Simple process using clockwork to install new ROM?

I want to put CM7 on my nook color. I am VERY confused by everything that is out there because I did the same with my G Tab in a very straightforward manner. I didn't root my G Tab because as it was explained ClockWorkMod (CWM) did the rooting for me. I think that a lot of my confusion is due to the fact that people here are creating bootable SD cards, and I really don't want to do that at this point.
Basically, all I did with my G Tab was to install CWM and copy the ROM file over via USB and installed it with CWM. And that's it. I had CM7 up and running. I did no rooting beforehand - CWM took care of all of this. I did no flashing or writing of image files.
People here are mentioning ROM manager apps, and rooting and downloading apps from the market for this, and all sorts of things. No apps were involved when I installed CM7 in the G Tab. And I could use CWM to select ROMS if I had more than one.
So, basically CWM did all the work. Is there such a simple procedure for the nook color? Where can I get clockworkmod for the nook?
Thanks in advance.

super simple guide. just download the files to bootable SD card. Process takes maybe 20 minutes.

Thanks for the link. But this still involves playing around with bootable SD cards, and if I do that, I might as well install CM7 to a bootable SD card.
Is there no way to avoid SD cards?

I looked into this when I installed CM7 on my NC. I think the answer, basically, is no. You can pick up the latest clockwork recovery from the official site here:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/02/clockwork-recovery-image.html
You may be able to install it with ADB, or maybe you could install ROM manager on the rooted stock Android OS and go from there.
I just decided to go with the flow: make a bootable CM7 SD card, install CM7 on internal memory with ROM Manager, remove card, reboot, install CWM Recovery on internal memory with ROM Manager, reformat SD card using my phone.

[Q] nook question

hello, ive asked this question here once before but idk why but im stressing out over this lol ok.....so my nook runing color cyanogen mod 7 has an internal and external memory. the micro sd i have has the CWM and its only 2gb and is full, so i bought another micro sd but 4gb, the sd card with CWM always boots into Recovery so i bought another card. is it safe for the device to use one card and then when i need to update pop the first sd card in? or...do you guys just pop the sd out on boot then put it back in once booted?
Sounds like you've installed CM onto internal memory (eMMC). If so, there's no harm swapping the car out, so long as you unmount it when the unit is powered on.
If, instead, you've got CM on an external (SD) card, then it just won't boot. Again, no harm done.
its on the sd card, but can use another sd card not cwm so i can keep it in there and use it? and if theres a update ill just pop the sd card with cwm on it

Sound like so. I think you still confuse about it.
Anyway, do state your questions again since we don't remember post-to-post

Yes, we know that, we know the NC has internal memory and an uSD slot for additional storage.
the micro sd i have has the CWM and its only 2gb and is full

That's ok, it's understandable.
so i bought another micro sd but 4gb

It should ALWAYS boot into CwM Recovery, if not, big problem.
so i bought another card.

Yes, use one uSD card for additional storage, leave it in the NC.
Save one uSD as a flashable CwMR card for update/backup ROM.
or...do you guys just pop the sd out on boot then put it back in once booted?

Leave the "normal" uSD in the NC.
"normal" meaning not the flashable CwMR.
Sorry for so many questions thank u so much ur a genious! But one more before I leave, do I have to update the Rom? The Rom I have is 7.0.3 and there is a newer one 7.1 do I have to install it? Cause I'm happy how it is
HTC Wildfire S (VM) "s-off" "rooted" Stock Rom
7.0.3 is very old
7.1 is the current stable
Latest ROM that has the love of many members is MiRaGe KANG, 7.2.
If you are happy with what you have now, you don't have to update new ROM
Ok and if I want to update I just flash a new one?
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
ok i put the 7.1 and flashed it then it said installation aborted
Did you tell us where you do install the CM7? On eMMC or uSD?
Usd
HTC Wildfire S (VM) "s-off" "rooted" Stock Rom
Your previous posts indicated that you had actually installed to internal memory not uSD.
There are two ways we can be certain what state you are in.
1) If you leave the card out and it will reboot into CM7 then you have installed on internal.
2) If you started with the eyeballer clockwork recovery image when you installed then you did an internal install. If you started with a VeryGreen size agnostic SD card then you installed onto SD card.
Assuming you have done an internal install then you do not want to leave the installer SD card in as this is a boot SD which will boot into clockwork recovery. Instead you just want a freshly formatted SD which is then used to hold your normal data.
When you want to update an internal install then you don't actually need to remove the SD card at all. Instead get the ROM Manager app from the market. Select the function to flash Clockwork recovery. This put an alternate clockwork boot on the internal memory and only needs to be done once. To do an update put the new ZIP at the top level of the SD card then use ROM Manager to select the zip to install. Select the wipe dalvik option and continue. The Nook will reboot into recovery and install the new ROM and then reboot with the new ROM. You can also manually get into clockwork recovery by powering up with the N key pressed. This will give you a boot slection allowing you to select normal boot or recovery. The latter will give you the full recovery menu.
If your install is actually on the SD card then you do an update by copying the new zip onto the boot partition which is actually what the PC will see if you put the card back into a PC. The new zip must be renamed to start with update-cm- and end with .zip When you reboot with this and hold the N key down then you can enter a simplified recovery which will install the update zip.

That's the reason why I keep asking askers where they do install CM7 to.
W/o knowing, I don't want to lead them into the wrong direction.
thanks for that great info, you nailed all my questions great

Do i always need an SDcard?

So i just got a nook color from someone who was selling it at work. It is factory with 1.4.2. All i want to do is install CM10. But i am kind of confused with all the different instructions in these Forums. I didnt buy an sdcard yet for this device so im pulling my sdcard out of my Galaxy note 2 backing it up and formatting it so i can root the nook. So here are my questions.
1.) Is manual nooter the only way to root 1.4.2?
2.) Once rooted can i simply download/install twrp and install CM10 then remove the sdcard and not use it again or must the sdcard always be there to boot up the device into CM10?
3.) if the above can be done what thread gives the best directions on how to do the above.
Sorry for being a nook noob. Give me a Samsung device and i will root and rom that thing with my eyes shut. But with this nook im feeling humbled lol

If you are going to put CM10 on your internal memory, you do not have to root your stock 1.4.2. Just follow eyeballer's guide, here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12797652
And you do not really have to have an SD card in the slot, but many apps expect one and won't run without one, so it is a good idea to get one. If you really don't want one, there is a tweak you can do to fool the apps into using your internal media storage as an sdcard.

[Q] Nook keeps booting to stock rom instead of android

Hi,
Recently cm7 crashed on me when I installed a theme that ADW didn't agree with. In the end I had to format my card, and my nook.
I'm using a Sandisk class 4 16gb microsd. Please note, I'm just dual booting. Not rooting.
I've tried to recreate the card but I keep running into the same problem. Here's the steps I'm using, and result that I keep getting.
1) I format the card to FAT32.
2) I use win32 diskimager to write generic-sd-v1.3.img to the sd. Eject the card, reinsert it, Then I copy the cm7.2 .zip and the gapps.zip onto the card.
3) I power my nook down completely, insert the card, and reboot.
What happens is, it installs cm7 onto the card and powers itself down just like it should. When I power it back up it boots into the stock rom.
What's happening and how can I fix it?

Go to my updated NC guide linked in my signature. I updated the image file (rev6) to work better. It still works fine on CM7.

[Q] Same card for SD cyanogen install and NookOS media files?

I have a Nook color with a bootable SD of Cyanogen 10.2. This boots up great and i can access the entire card when booted into Android.
When i boot into the NookOS is there a way to access any portion of the same card?

Yes, go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and read item B3 in the second post of that thread. I have a tip there that tells you how to modify stock on internal memory so it can see the media partition on an SD set up for CM.
