[Q] Camera broken

Hi all,
the camera on my Glacier appears to be broken. Any "camera related" app I try to launch force closes after a few seconds. This is true for the built-in camera app, for a barcode scanner app and even for a torch app that would use the flash and not really the camera.
I have already cleared the cache and Davlik and have fixed the permissions to no avail. I ran a logcat from launching the camera app until after I clicked the "force close" button:

My next step now would be a factory reset, but before I do that I'd like to see whether anybody's got a better idea. Any help is appreciated.

I just did another reboot and launched the camera app, again. On the first attempt the behavior was the same as before: the app force closed after a while. On any subsequent attempts to launch the camera app I now get the error message "Camera Error / Cannot connect to camera".

We need more info. Are you rooted? What rom? What kernel? Any mods, themes? Things like this can break stuff.
If youre rooted and running a custom rom, just reflash the rom from a full wipe.

the device is rooted; I am running CM 7.0.3 with kernel 2.6.35.14 demonspeed v9. It's probably the kernel that causing these problems. After re-flashing CM 7.0.3 (thus going back to the kernel that comes with the ROM), the camera started working again ...

And if this is a kernel for Nexus S is ONLY FOR I9020T

The boot.img includes the kernel (as a zkernel file) you must unpack to work with it or flash with fastboot commands (i don't recommend this)
This file is only for devs

Would replacing the boot.img in a ICS maguro build be enough to test this out. I have a i9020t and would be willing to give it a shot. is there a possibility this could hard brick my ns. if it fails will i still be able to get to the recovery

you can test it with "fastboot boot boot.img" on my i9023 can't boot

it doesn't boot from my 9020T (but tried with 2.3.6, not ICS)

Try with the nexus s system dump that is the sdk port right? Sdk port is a lot different than the real thing

I have a maguro-targeted AOSP build at home maybe I can test this with. Essentially replace the boot.img in the build with this one, flash, and go? Still noob at this, but I'm game for testing stuff.
Otherwise, where is this NS system dump you're talking about?
And to OP, isn't it better practice to link the thread you're referencing, rather than just the file?

My bad I meant the galaxy nexus dump. It if I was you I'd rip open that boot image to see what's actually in there I was gonna do it earlier but I need a wired mouse for when I use Linux my Bluetooth mouse doesn't wanna play nice with Ubuntu

yea, split that boot.img open and confirm it's for the nexus s. It should have a init.herring.rc in the ramdisk if it is. I was planning on doing this myself AFTER I can get an aosp 4.0.1 build to finish compiling without errors

Just unpacked it, and yes this is a boot.img for nexus s. I can't confirm it's a 3.0 kernel however.

This kernel is now confirmed to work on Nexus S with ICS only. Kernel is in fact allowing the system to boot but still cannot find out if it is a 3.0 kernel or not. Launcher still crashes.

Anyone try this on the ics rom?

[Q] Nook color dramatically drain battery

Helo, my nook color running Phiremod 7.1 Stable release. Before I tryed CM9 -> MIUI -> CM7 Nightly 253m. Before install, I cleared system, data, cache and dalvik cache. In any of this releases I have one bug. Nook drammaticaly drain battery, also in sleep mod (~20% for 8 hours), airplane mod doesn't resolve this problem.
Another bug, that battery indicator doesn't appear in tray, only percentage.
If I boot into recovery, and enter key test, there is spam "key 108 presses" or "key 103"
If I connect to device using adb, in logcat I can see this, than device in sleep mod:

Is there hardware error or ... ? Help me please

This probably has something to do with running CM9 and then putting a CM7 build on top. While generally formatting the boot isn't something i'd recommend, i've found it to be useful when switching from CM7 to CM9. I would assume this to be true in the opposite direction, but if you're uncomfortable with taking this risk, perhaps you should wait for a second opinion.

After all I format /boot /system /cache /data, back to stock 1.0.0, than update to 1.4.1, no matter what I do, but the power from battery leaks the same.
Can it be hardware issue? And if it is, what exactly can it be? Bad battery or short circuit in usb port?

How can I help myself. Turn off my nook, disassemble it, take battery out, plug in wall outlet, put battery in. Everything works great.

Screen issue on device unlock

Hey.
When I press the power button to wake my screen the backlight seems to start lighting up ( from the center of the screen to the borders) but nothing is shown.
I press the power button again, screen goes completely black, I press it again and the screen wakes as it should.
It seems to me it only happens if the device has been on standby for a longer period of time (1~ hour).
This has been happening on every ROM and kernel I've been using (4.2, 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.4 and their respective stock kernels as well as NEO and Franco kernel in several revisions).
I've been using lots of different CPU, GPU and voltage settings over time but the issue persists.
Strangely I never had this happen when receiving a call or when the alarm goes off in the morning.
I have no idea what possibly causes this. Maybe anyone has a clue?

OK, so I have been having similar issues, but mine is worse!
When I press the power button to unlock, I get a dim back light but no display. I then press power again and you can see the faint back light turn full black just like when you hit that button to turn your screen off, then I try again to turn on my display and I keep getting the back light on on off cycle. I've tried using my connected bluetooth to make a call to see if the display pops up and nothing.
Eventually, I have to hold the power button down until I force the phone off, and then turn the phone back on in regular mode (not safe mode which maybe I should try even though I have no idea what that allows me to do) and continue with what I was doing. Today is the first time I decided to search this problem. My N4 is about 10 months old, is rooted, no ROM, but Franco Kernel and overclocked to 1512. BTW, I also adjusted the overclock speed and tried plugging in direct charge when I get my no wake up problem.
This has been going on for about a month, has been the only reason a reboot has been needed, and is becoming very annoying. I also use wireless charging. I do not know if a complete wipe of the phone getting it back to stock would help, but I really would like to fix this. I want the N5 but realistically I don't need it yet. The N4 is in perfect physical condition, and until recently, very reliable.
So no, you are not alone!

It's weird. It seems to be totally ROM and kernel independent. It also seems it has nothing to do with the governor or clock speed. Neither with the voltage. It happens while on a/c and while on battery. No matter the temperature, too.

My wife's n4 is having the exact same issue and it's a completely stock phone.

If it's the same issue that used to happen with the HTC HD2, then it's probably the power button.
To test this out, enable the option "Volume button wake". That option allows you to wake up the device using the volume buttons (Please note that I have this option inside Carbon settings > buttons, it might not be in stock or it might be in a different place and name depending on the ROM). Now stop using the power button and use the volume button for a while instead to wake up the device, then see if the problem persists.
Edit: Also try using "double tap status bar to sleep" or set the screen timeout to something short (in short, don't use the power button to put the device to sleep)

I'm already using a mod that turns the back button into a power off button on the home screen.
Please note that this only happens if the device is turned off for a longer period. If the device is awake I can repeatedly press the power button and it will react instantly.
It seems to me it happens when the device is in deep sleep. If I press the power button after the screen has been off for let's say an hour the screens backlight will turn on and show a very light whiteish dim but nothing is shown. So I have to press it again to turn it off (screen goes black) and again to turn it on (instantly works then)

that is just a wakelock taking longer to execute/finish, had few of those, not a hardware specific thing(even more that our s4 pro can´t even do a full sleep) some app is causing that,for me happens mostly when I have too much apps that synchronize accounts

I've ready tried waiting after the first press (when the display just has a light dim) but it never fully turns on unless I lock and relock it again.

[Q] No space for installing apps - how to install to SD card

Hi,
This is my first post to this forum. Please forgive me if this question has already been answered ad-nauseum but I haven't been able to find an adequate answer to it after what seems like exhaustive searching on this forum or on google.
I have successfully rooted my nook simple touch running firmware 1.2.1 (multiple times now, that part is simple). I have access to the google play store and the android store, but I still would like to have the ability to sideload .apk files.
The problem that I run into is that I seem to have almost no space for applications on my device. I can manage to get opera mini, dropbox, kindle, and ES file explorer going, and I might be able to install several other small apps if I tried, but I haven't been able to install EZPDF reader due to what appears to be space limitation.
I have tried the following:
- installing through the play store - installation fails
- installing by tapping on the .apk file while browsing my SD card using either ES file explorer or relaunch - out of space error
- installing by running the ADB install command - install failed due to insufficient storage
- I have also tried the [-s] command with adb install and prompt does not recognize that qualifier
- installing by simply copying the .apk file to the /system/app folder (this actually gets the application into my applications list and I can open it but then it claims it can't access my SD card and closes down
I really am starting to feel frustrated, especially since it seems like others are able to install large numbers of apps without running into this type of problem. How limited is the space on the NST and is there any way to install applications to the SD card to prevent running out of space so quickly? Perhaps I simply need to forgo the idea of having more than a small handful of applications? Thanks very much in advance.

Something has gotten screwed up with either the partitioning or else the formatting of the /data partition.
It should be showing somewhere near 840 Megs for the partition or 800 Megs on a df command.
You are showing 150 Megs.
Step 1: Do a complete, ~1.9 GB backup using noogie and Win32DiskImager
Step 2:

This will tell you instantly if the partitioning is stock.
If it's not, stop here.
Step 3: Get ClockworkMod Recovery running as either a recovery image on internal storage, on external storage or through USB boot. Connect to it with ADB.

Where indeed? I am not familiar with noogie and its output, but I have seen this kind of complaint before. You've been really busy with flashing one thing after another on your device, including cloning a device running FW 1.1.5. I think you need to slow down and re-start from the cleanest configuration you can get.
You said you had a complete backup of the device as received from the seller. Here is what I would do:
1. Restore that backup.
2. De-register offline (boot, as soon as "Read Forever" appears, press and hold the lower hardware buttons until the prompt appears). Proceed to delete user data.
3. Make a NookManager card (BE SURE to use the updated version. The old version will not work properly with FW 1.2.2) and use the "rescue" option to initiate a factory re-image of the device. This is your best bet to getting things back to the way they should be before trying out modifications.
4. After the re-image is done you will be left at the "Welcome" screen. Connect your device via USB to your PC and drag the 1.2.2 update zip onto the "Nook" drive. Let the device sleep and it will install the update.
5. Register the device.
6. Root with NookManager.
7. Customize as desired.
I'd be surprised if this did not make the issue you describe disappear.

This morning I just did an update to my Onyx Poke 3. Since they are pretty obtuse, it's a full update, 1.4 GB. Good luck finding space for that.
I have a whole recovery/update install system which can access a USB flash drive. It worked just fine.
Oh, wait, you're still talking about the NST??? How about sticking it on an SD card in the slot? Hmm?

I have done the following ... booted into nook manager, rescued through th factory zip ... that returned my device to 1.1.5 ... isn't this as clean as it gets ... cleaner than i received from the seller which had 1.2.1 ???
Right now as i type this ... I have built a device coming the factory zip way out of the Nook Manager(Stealth version) ... I've removed RelaunchX after mapping the button to the app drawer(a very clean implementation minus the overheads of a full fledged lancher i hope), thanks for this implementation as it just gets the job done, its not like our low spec'd device required a full launcher, a launcher was only to access the app drawer, and the standalone app drawer implementation does that job giving it a clean experience.
Some advice ?
1. Would you recommend installing CWM recovery to the above setup ? ...

The /data partition is ~800 M (for apps, system & /data/media/B&N Downloads for B&N books)
The /media partition is ~250 M (for sideloaded books)
There is no 600 M discrepancy.

Absolutely not. It will replace the stock recovery and you may come to regret that. If you want CWM, make an sdcard following the directions in that thread. That's how I use it.

If you must go into this (see reply by @Renate above), there is a thread that describes repartitioning with gparted: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ch-resize-partitions-non-destructive.1279091/
Fooling with the partitions is a recipe for disaster, IMHO, so unless a previous owner has done some damage you need to repair and your device is a doorstop, I would not go there for all the used NSTGs in Romania.
Edit: FWIW, here is a df of one of my registered devices with stock partitioning. Yours may vary slightly but should be similar in terms of 1K-blocks:
