[Q] How to find version number without going into "About" - Acer Iconia A500

Basically I have an Iconia in which I am locked out of. I am going to run an update to get it unlocked. However, I have no idea what my current version is because I can't unlock it.
Is there an ADB command to get version?
If not, which version of the stock rom should I get?

Doesn't a full factory reset unlock it for you?

You mean pressing in the reset hole? No. Unless I am doing something wrong, it just does a soft reset and boots back to the lock screen.

How to Factory reset a500
1. Switch off
2. Press Vol-up + Power
3. If display goes on: Release power but hold vol-up
3. Toggle Lock switch (On>Off>On>Off)
Screen will display:
Erasing Userdata..
Erasing Cache..
if you can't go to Settings>Privacy>Personal data>Factory data reset..

yeah...i've been trying this for the last half hour. Question about step 3: what position does it need to start in? how many times do i switch it back and forth?
to start, what orientation do i need to be holding the tablet?
EDIT: I'm an idiot. Landscape mode and I was holding down the wrong volume rocker.

so...how long is it supposed to be on the "erasing cache..." screen...because it has been displaying that message for awhile now...
EDIT: I followed the above steps but I plugged in a USB keyboard. Used the onscreen menu and formatted the tablet.

HOWTO: Hard Reset

It took me ages to figure this one out! It doesn't tell you in the manual how to do when you've been locked out, and no one has put anything online that I can find yet, so I guess I'll be the first to report it:
1. Power on the device (has to be off first of course)
2. Press and hold the Home button
3. Wait until you see the exclamation mark and phone image
4. Press the Home + Power button together
5. Select factory reset from the menu that appears
that's it.
Thanks mate it will help when i get mines later on today.
can you please describe it detailed when i have to press home again
if i press home + back it flashes the screen...
is Home + Power button no the back.
hard reset
nothing happens
I'm not sure this is what you're looking for but there's a factory data reset in Menu -> Settings -> SD card & phone storage -> Factory data reset.
with the phone off, it's better to hold the home key and then press and hold the home button.
Also, already discussed here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503264

This worked for me.... thanks
Perfect. Thanks for the info.
Sorry if this is dumb question. I am still new to HTC Magic...
If you flashed a custom recovery image, wouldn't HOME + END/PWR give you a different screen, instead of the exclamation point?
Also, I think there are 3 modes?
- FastBoot
- Recovery
- HBOOT
What is HBOOT for?
sapp100
this worked for me for my sapp100 android:
press home and back button then pwr on for 2 sec will ask you if you want to clear and reset just follow writing and 100% ok

[TUT] how to perform a hardreset!

To perform a HTC HD2 Leo hard reset
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it. You will then see a message on the screen telling you this will erase xxxxxxxx......
2. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
3. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
Soft Reset
If i may add,
A soft reset,
1. Open the back with your thumb or finger
2. The RESET button is located below the bottom left slot for the battery and the SIM card. Use a small object with a blunt point like a toothpick to the RESET button.
3. Your phone will restart and the Home screen appears.
Correct me if im wrong,
Sorry im a newb, but what is the precise difference between hard and soft reset?
Will a soft reset delete stuff such as contacts, pictures and music? And will hard reset do the same?
thanks smaberg...
you should add the two other methods to the first post
there is the soft-reset button (little red button) and a software method (clear storage).

the "software" method (clear storage) is a hardreset, witch means you will restore it to factory default, deleting all info on phone...
the softreset only restarts the phone.
after flashing a new ROM i always recomend a hardreset afterwards, to be sure to get rid of all leftovers...
(Useful if flashing a rom and battery is less than 50%)
Enter bootloader mode:
Momentary press the red reset button on the back of the device, near the sd card slot, while holding the volume down button. Keep pressing on the Volume down till you see the bootloader screen. If you did not have volume down pressed as you were pressing on the reset button the device is just gonna reset and no change will take place.
Else, you will see "serial" written on the bottom middle of the screen if you're not connected to the PC via USB cable yet. "USB" will replace "Serial" when windows recognizes the device. Once on this state, you can press "next" on the rom installer where you have to acknowledge you connected the device via USB and your battery is grater than 50% and so on and so on.
You can start the installer on the PC prior to connecting the device in Bootloader mode. I don´t know what happens if you enter bootloader while connected to the PC (if you don't either, don't do it!!)
Note: I advise against using this mode with less than 10% or so. I guess you could end up with largest screened brick in the market.
To clarify previous posts:
Hard reset: Resets the device to factory defaults or to the last rom you installed.
How?
-Hardware method: combo of hardware buttons (described above)
-Software method: slide through HTC sence till "Settings" bar and select "Security" (top option). Then select "Factory resets" (last option). To my knowledge it does absolutely the same thing as the hardware method. correct me if I'm wrong.
Soft Reset: changes you made will take effect after the device resets (installed apps or reg edits...) OR you got to a sticky situation and you need to reset to get everything running smooth again (device shows abnormal operation of some kind).
How?
-Software method: Hold the power button till the quick list appears and press "power off" option on the top. You can also be presented with this option after installing some apps or after changing something within an app.
-Hardware method: remove the back cover and press the little red button near the sd card slot. Useful if the device stops responding and you are unable to soft reset by any other way.
Enter Bootloader Mode: allows for flashing devices in any battery state. It doesn't do anything by itself, just allows roms to be flashed. Some people have gotten stuck on this screen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=599259, so use the search tool and read up before using. After flashing a rom you will loose every setting and file you had on the device itself. SD card will remain untouched (or so it should). I've read people advising to remove the card prior to flashing. Not exactly sure as to why. Files saved to the SD will remain intact. Apps installed on the SD card (aka. "Storage") will remain intact, only not registered or linked with shortcuts anymore. The device basically doesn´t know they exist.
How?
-Harware method: button combo (described above).
-Software method(ish): If you don't have to manually enter bootloader, the rom installer will take your device through this step without you having to do anything besides connecting through USB (activesynk, I guess) and running the RUU_LEO_xxx.exe file. You will see a progress bar on both PC and device as the rom is flashed.
Note: Reseting the device (turned on) while pressing a key (ex.: vol down) does the same thing as pressing the power button (with the device turned off) while pressing that same button (vol down).
Maybe you could transfer this info to the 1st post and clean up the thread a bit... Even, this could be at the Wiki section. Or better, a link on the Wiki to this thread
Hi guys,
I tried with both volume up and down pressed to hard reset, but not really successful. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

did u press power while pressing vol up/down?
Well, for entering bootloader mode, you can do it in "software mode" without having a PC connected to your PPC.
You can just run EnterBootloader.exe from your device.
(see attachment)

yes, I did. But when pressing I do not feel that is actually "making contact" I tried several times...
I will try with the bootloader from above...let's see...
Thanks and regards,

If, for some reason, you cant hard reset using the power button, you can always press the reset button on the back of the device while pressing both vol up and down. After the vibration, it will enter the hard reset menu (remember to keep pressing both vol buttons till this point).
By the way: were you pressing the power button and both vol buttons with the device turned off? Cuz, with it turned on, you are just cycle through the quick list and vol menu like crazy.
Yep...pressing with phone off.
I tried with the reset button from the back of the phone and it worked.
Thanks guys...

Seba

Try these directions, if you're pressing volume down it will boot to recovery =. dead android
If you're on v8 bootloader this wont work, use fastboot
1. Turn off your tablet,
2) Rotation lock to your left;
3) Press Vol+ (which closest to the rotation lock) and power on simultaneosly
4) As soon as the tablet vibrates you can release the power on button and you should start to switch rotation lock left and right till you see
Erasing Userdata...
Erasing Cache...
Vol+ is still pressed;
5) The tablet starts to format
6) Your tablet will be as clean as it can be.

SM-930F Won't reboot, can't be flashed and won't start up due FGP Lock.

Hi!
I've got an Samsung Galaxy S7 since 2017.
Due to an app i wanted to use i tried to Root my phone. It did work but not all apps worked properly so i tried to unroot it.
As it did seem to work but i was still a bit sceptic i decided to do a factory reset to completely empty it.
While doing the factory reset my phone crashed... also found out that i didn't have my OEM allowance on so i can't even enter my phone anymore as it says Custom binary locked by FRP Lock.
I emptied the data / cache and tried to factory reset but it wouldn't do anything.
I tried flashing my phone with the samsung firmware for the S7 with odin, BUT my phone doesn't respond at all.
it just keeps standing on Downloading... do not turn off target. Even if Odin tries to write onto the phone nothing happens, even tho the downloader should respond. Tried different Cables as well. As of now i have no idea what to do left to get in there. i tried for hours, tried different firmwares, but nothing responds... Anyone having tips for me?
When you tried with oden where you in download mode or still on the boot screen with the lock message?
You can't flash if your not in download mode.
to get in download you shoud normally by pressing the Volume Down, Home and Pose On/Off button together for about 3-4 seconds.
Once the Download screen appears, press Volume Up button to continue.
you could give this a try
Press the Power On/Off button and Volume Down button simultaneously for 5-7 seconds as shown below.
Wait for the phone to reboot and start again normally.
See that the Custom Binary Block error message does not pop-up this time.
if not then you could try .
Another useful way to bypass/remove the FRP Lock error is to perform a factory reset on your phone. This can be implemented by booting into the Recovery Mode. To do so:
Long press the Power On/Off, Home and Volume Up button together and was for a screen with multiple options appear before you.
Now use the Volume Down key to scroll down and select “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” using the Power On/Off button as shown in the screenshot below.
Wait patiently for the process to get over and for your phone to restart normally.
Note: you will lose all your data and setting stored in the phone after performing a factory/ hard reset.
Be prepared to set-up your phone from scratch after the process is over.

It was already in download mode. i can get into download mode, it just doesn't respond when i try with Odin.
The 2nd doesn't work somehow.. the lock still appears unfortunatly...
And did multiple times wipe data / factory reset but nothing...

phone wont stay on long enough to do anything

My note 4 wont stay on not even long enought to login to the play store, it just freezes for a second and reboots.
would it be possible to fix it with a custom rom and theres a way to install without installing any app on the phone
Hey there, you can try to do a factory data reset if the phone boots into recovery mode.
NOTE: A factory data reset will wipe the whole device including the internal storage.
To enter into recovery mode, power off the phone. Then, hold the vol up + home + power buttons together till you see the Samsung splash screen. When the splash screen comes, release the power button and continue holding the volume up and home buttons till it boots into recovery.
Once it's in recovery mode, you can use the volume down button to scroll to the 'Wipe Data/ Factory Data Reset' and then hit the power button to select the option.

Okay. Does it boot into Download Mode?
To enter into download mode, power down the phone. Similar to the recovery boot process. Just that instead of the volume up button, you need to hold the volume down button.
If it does boot into download mode. Does it stay on or give you the same problem?

Maybe you can try installing the firmware through Odin. It may fix things. Else it could be an eMMC failure.
It could be a battery problem. I had kinda the same issues (random reboots that became more and more frequent and at some point the phone barely booted). So i ordered a new battery and problem is solved, phone is up and running again. If you can, try another battery just to be sure that this is your case. Also, the worst scenario is that some people reported random reboots when emmc memory failed. I hope this is not your case
