Mom's old surround, new toy for me, one problem - Surround General

The thing won't boot up. It will go to a charging screen when plugged in. But it never seems to charge at all. I've looked around for a "surround won't boot" thread. Kind of an all incompassing thread but can't find it. Any ideas from you guys or know of such a thread to look at? TIA

Try restoring it. Hold the + - buttons and plug it in. Press vol - then vol -

How do you get into download mode?

I'm holding volume down and power. I hear the jingle but it just stays on the "Vibrant" screen... Ugh. My phone is brokedy broke.
Are you rooted?
I rooted with RyanZa's OCLF but unrooted right before doing the recent OTA update. After doing that, my phone wouldn't boot past the Vibrant screen. So now, I'm trying to get in download mode so I can use Odin to get back to stock. Nothing is working for me right now though.
Ok, I was going to tell you the easiest way to get into download mode, but your phone has to be on. It is still possible if you know how to use ADB and your phone was in debug mode.
Also, how long did you wait on the Vibrant screen before restarting it? It can take awhile. Did you have any lag fixes installed?

the best and easiest way i have found to get in to download mode is this.
1. remove batt.
2.plug usb into computer
3.put batt. in
4.hold volume down+up
5. plug usb into phone.
if you need more help with getting your phone up and running, feel free to PM me cuz i just went through this my self, i know how confusing it can get.
I had done RyanZa's lag fix but I also undid that before doing the OTA update. My phone was in debug mode, but unfortunately I don't know how to use ADB. I waited a while on the Vibrant screen but I'll try it again in case I really didn't wait long enough.
Btw, thanks for the continued assistance.
Yea.
Try this also:
Plug in your phone til you see the big battery charging icon
hold down both volume keys and power.
As soon as the battery goes away, release the power key but continue to hold volumes.. Try that..
You are essentially holding down the wrong buttons...
There after two "modes" your phone can be put into...
1. Download mode:
Done by having your phone off and then quickly turning it on and holding down JUST the up and down volume controls while having the usb already plugged in (easist I've found is stated above regarding taking the battery out, plug in usb, hold both volume buttons, then while holding them put battery back in)
2. Recovery mode:
Done by holding both up and down volume buttons AND the power button. (note: after the vibrant screen comes up, release only the power button while still holding volume buttons or else the vibrant screen will just reboot over and over)
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Thanks all, I realized that I didn't have the right drivers installed. (duh). Thanks goes out to those who pointed me in the right direction.
The new problem I have came after accidentally pulling the USB cord out of my laptop while running ODIN. Now, all I get when trying to get in download mode is a graphic of a phone, a yellow triangle with exclamation mark, and a computer.
Anyone know what do do?

[Q] Bricked or jusr dead?

Hi all,
I got a Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) from a friend who wanted to toss it away since he says it is broken.
I want to see if it is or not.
When I try to turn it on, complely nothing happens. When I put the charger in (or the USB cable fot that matter) a battery sign appears with 5 dots under it which move from left to right. When I try to switch the phone on nothing happens
When I wait a while, the screen goes black. When I try to switch on, nothing happens.
When I push the home button, the green charging battery appears again and the back an menu button light up.
A factory reset is not working at all. Can it be that the power button is broken??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Vincent
Fixed it!
Hi,
I was able to fix it.
Thanks to this sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134975
This is what happened:
I tried just about anything, nothing worked. Then I saw a reply in this thread someone mentioning you should plug in the usb cable, push both volume keys and then maybe it could work. But of course, mine didn't.
Then I started experimenting, what did work was this
- take out battery
- connect usb cable to laptop
- push volume down + home simultaniously and then put battery in
Now i got into download mode (yellow robot and triangle + warning not to turn off target) and with Odin I was able to start the phone.
I then found out that the power button was indeed broken!
Phone works like a charm. Only thing is when I have a dead battery that I have to use Odin to start the phone. I will seek for a way to fix the defective power button.
Hopefully it will help other people with this problem!
BTW, thanks all for all the help

[Q] Sprint Galaxy S5 Not Powering On

Can someone please give me some advice on what to do. My phone is less than 3 months old and will not power on. It doesn't do anything, not even the vibration it usually does. I've tried plugging it into the charger but it doesn't even have the charging light on. It was working fine and just stopped. I pulled the battery out and put it back in but nothing it working. If If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful! Thanks!!!
what were you doing at the time
What were you doing at the time the phone stopped working? Did you try charging the battery on an external charger?
As the poster above suggested, what were you doing recently? We are looking for clues as to what happened? Did you yank on the power cord, drop the phone, et cetera?
Make sure that your battery isn't in backwards in the phone and try using a different cable to charge the phone. If it still doesn't charge, then borrow a friends external charger.. or even the (charged) battery out of their S5 for a few seconds to see if your phone will turn on. We're trying to differentiate between a dead battery and all other problems.
If you still have no luck, then remove the battery for ten seconds, then replace (the presumably charged) battery in your phone. Then press and hold the volume down key. Then also press and hold the home key, then the power key. After about five seconds, you should see the phone start to the "download screen". If so, post here for further guidance.
If you phone is non responsive to a borrowed battery and the download mode described above, then you should seek warranty service with your carrier. A three month old phone should still be under warranty.

Can you get into recovery ( volume up + menu +power button) or download mode (volume down + menu + power button)?
You may read this article http://www.technobezz.com/samsung-galaxy-s5-not-charging/, hope it helps.
I tried the volume down + home + power and it didn't work. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to make a trip to the store but it's looking like I'm going to have to.

It may well be an electrical hardware issue, it doesn`t look like a software problem to me. Good luck and i hope its fixed soon

It is looking like a hardware issue. If you are positive that the battery is charged.. i.e. if the battery turns your husband's phone on, then we ask what is different about your phone? Most software issues would be bypassed by starting a phone in download mode, which is why I asked you to try that.
Have a quick look at the battery "fingers" or pins on your phone. Those are the gold or silver coloured pins that line up with the gold or silver tabs on the end of your battery. Do they all appear to be the same? There isn't one that is bent out of alignment or shorter than the others where it might not be making contact with the battery?
And why not try one more test? See if the phone will start up in "recovery mode" this time.
Pull the battery out of the phone for ten seconds. Then replace it. Now in order.. press and hold the volume up button, then press and hold the home button as well. And last, press and hold the power button. Continue holding all three for ten seconds or until you see the phone screen turn on.
If that still doesn't work, my best guess is that you may have accidentally banged and damaged the power button. If it was me.. I'd try pressing really hard and wiggling the power button for a few seconds to see if you can cajole the phone to power on at least once and confirm the problem.
But that is about all that we can do. If you can't get the phone to power up with a known good battery.. then th store needs to check it with test equipment to narrow down what the hardware fault is.

Nexus 4 Red Light of Death: Already Reconnected Battery

Hey guys, so my friend gave me her Nexus 4 and asked me to try and figure out what the problem was...
As the title says, the device refuses to turn on no matter what, I've tried using different chargers, different cables, even opened up the back cover, disconnected the battery from the device and left it like that for about half an hour, then plugged it back in, nothing. If i try to press any of the buttons while the device is plugged in, the Red light comes on and stays on until after i let go of the buttons...any thoughts? Its been awhile since she got this phone, so i don't believe she'll be able to send it back to Google to get a replacement.
TIA!
I read somewhere that you need to externally charge the battery to fix this.

How would you go about doing that? Thanks!
The battery could simply be toast. A new one off eBay will run you about $20.
I had the same problem. Try this steps pls:
Press Volume down+power buttons at the same time for 15 seconds.
After 15 seconds, plug the charger as the buttons pressed
After doing this u will see the led than the phone is going to start charging
That's it.

Did you take the phone in for service? What did they do to fix it, if they fixed it... I have a dead phone and need some answers if they are out there. I'm looking through every post that has anything to do with this subject and coming up blank - just like my phone's screen!
Part of my issue is that I had a shut down from out of nowhere on NYE. I was able to bring it back up with the power, volume up, and Bixby combo the next day. Foolishly I assumed it was a fluke and went right back to using my phone just as I had before. I saw an article about disabling the Bixby button, which seemed to be the thing to do... When the phone shut down the next day again, I couldn't bring it back because I no longer have a Bixby button for the combo. It's been down since Jan. 2, and I'm at my wit's end. Can you please update your phone status? I'd appreciate it if you can!

Lol disabling the bixby button in software does not mean you can't trigger download mode. That level of software has no idea what packages you disabled ?
Did you have Substratum themes applied before updating?

Happened with me last night, bunch of updates and then black. I was gonna send to warranty, then someone told me Power + Bixby + Vl down and it worked. How can I find out what did it
When I called Samsung, they were clueless how to get it started again as we walked through all the button combinations they had. It was fully charged when it stopped working, both times. The second time it took me a few days of trying on my own, calling, Samsung and then going into their repair store.
They took it back to work on it after I explained what was going on. He tried several things and came out and told me it may need a replacement but wanted to try one more thing. Hours later, he came back and said he hooked it up to a charger and it had been dead. Once it started charging, it showed the green battery, lightning bolt and blinking circle. It still didn't start normally, but the three button combo worked at around 20%. I'm not sure if he tried before that, but it came back on.
I've discovered that my handset is extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and shuts down. I'm in the Midwest and have been working outside in a tent like structure. I listen to music, books, or podcasts while I'm working. Many times, I will put my phone on a shelf while charging but still listening. The phone shuts off and first I have to wait for it to warm up, then it has to drain the fully charged battery, and then I start charging it again. After the first time on my own, I did the button combo right after it started taking a charge and it worked.
I'm not sure if a replacement phone is the way to go, because if this is common on the S8, I might end up with another dud that would just frustrate me more. I like the phone, but this quirk is annoying.
Last night my phone was charging and accessible fine. This morning I have a green light at the top showing I assume that it's charged but the screen is totaly black. nothing I do brings up any screen. I tried all the button combos I tried plugging it in to the charger and nothing shows any kind of reaction. I tried plugging it into my computer and the computer said it was setting up device QUSB_BULK. Then said it was set up but even after it supposedly complete I could not find the device. What the hell?
S8 Black Screen
Is the green light staying on? This happened to me on one of the many shut down times I experienced. I think I narrowed it down to my phone not liking cold temperatures, but I don't know if that is your phone's issue. It hasn't happened since last winter, so I haven't needed to do any of this for quite some time, but I'm trying to remember all of the steps I took.
I'm gonna suggest getting the battery drained back down to zero. In order to drain the battery when it's black screened, I kept trying all the button combos repeatedly for, it seems like, maybe three or more days... I couldn't tell if it was dead on several of the occasions, but when I had an indication light, it went off after days of doing any and all button combos, just to drain what battery I could.
Once you do that, while keeping it out of any extreme temps, (if there have been any) then plug in the adapter that came with it, using a good quality USB-C cord and charge it again and see if the charging screen comes up. (The Fast Adapter Charger that connects with USB 3.o is the best to use. Samsung wanted me to use the original cord, but I have no idea where that is! I just used a good quality cord.)
If that doesn't do the trick, then it's not the same issue I had, and I wish you luck on finding out and getting it fixed! Don't forget to update the site for others to find out if your tricks work... (You can still try this, but it may be just to rule it out as a possibility.) Try draining it more than you first did, and then plug it in again to see if it takes a change.
If it is taking a charge again after draining and plugging in your power cord, wait until you get back up to at least 20% and then try the three button start (Bixby / Power / Volume Up at the same time) and make sure you hold them for up to 30 seconds or until it kicks on. One time, I think I held it for almost a full minute. But it did take the change, restarted on the three button combo restart, and didn't have any new issues from its down time.
If this works for you, come back and tell us! If not, come back and report what you try and what the results are.
I really hope that helps! Good luck!

Sounds like a system problem, you can try to use the button to force a reboot, if there is no response, you can try to reinstall the system, if this still can not be solved, then you may need to replace the new screen, you can go to Witrigs to see Note 8 screen, they There is an original Note 8 Super AMoled screen for sale. The price is also relatively low.
