Is there any hope for having wifi file share feature on blade .
Few days ago I have seen two of my friends having Samsung galaxy note which has WIFI DIRECT. The file transfer through WIFI DIRECT is amazingly fast. My friend got 100MB transfered in around 30seconds on his galaxy note running gingerbread .
I'm wondering if this feature is hardware only or will it come to all devices sometime in the future. I think ics has APIs to it but is it hardware-only..??

You can download File Expert from Play store and use that to setup FTP and share files through wifi or network. I've used it and it is indeed very fast.

But what I'm talking about doesn't require internet access point to share files.
WIFI DIRECT between two phones without even having internet access to both phones. Just like Bluetooth file sharing between devices.

But then for that any one of the phones would need to be on the hotspot mode using a mobile network right?

No.
WIFI DIRECT is like local wifi file sharing without any interference of mobile networks or access point.
In file manager when we long press on file and select share , there will be option to send file via wifi direct. Then one device has to create a local wifi network and other device has to connect to same network. But it won't need mobile network or 3G or access point or any hotspot connected.

basically, this feature to share file b/w devices without any router(access point) is called WIFI DIRECT. I am not sure that this feature if fully dependent on hardware or may be software dependent but I with my brother making a very similar app whicg sends files between devices without using any access point.
It is 90% complete now and soon we will publish it in the play store (android market).
it does not require any user interpretation u just have to send file like u send through bluetooth. it gives 2.5-3.0 MBps speed.
so plzz wait for our upload and appreciate our work if like it.

Hey all the best for the work on this.
Yes my bad , the feature is WIFI DIRECT and not wifi file share. I would appreciate it.
The meaning of wifi has always something to do with internet access point which is useless for file sharing if we have a less speed internet (high speed wifi device with low speed internet where internet speed limits the transfer speed). I always wished to have wifi file transfers without the access point and haven't yet found anything similar other than the wifi direct on newer devices.
Once again all the best and im eagerly waiting for ur app.

I bought this with the intentions of using the wifi from my phone. Did not know that the fire could not connect to adhoc connections. Is there any way around this? As of now the fire is pretty useless to me if i cannot get this situation sorted out. Thanks for any help.

You have to look up on how your phone does its wifi hotspotting.
I have a galaxy S and when I set up the wifi, kindle fire works perfectly fine from it.
Search around here, someone had mentioned an app that will share it as infrastructure and not adhoc, which I believe is what you would need.
That app would be wifi tether if you are on Android

I can connect to my Inspire 4g running CM7.
Try some different ROMS and see which ones will let you?
I am having trouble using the web browser with my Droid RAZR's wifi hotspot on verizon but book downloading, app downloading, and even prime video streaming seems to work fine. Not sure why the web browser doesn't.
Using my gf droidx and wifi tether I can finally get it to connect but then abruptly met with a verizon wallgarden page to sign into mobile hot spot.

Well as someone else mentioned, cyanogenmod on samsung galaxy s has no problems tethering. I still need to mod the Fire to allow adhoc tethering as I need it to be able to access my laptop's adhoc wifi... I think there are some files that need modifying i.e.
/system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
I had a go but its beyond me abilities. Anyone else keen may gleen something from:

Hey Guys- So I have the samsung fascinate and have been trying to tether. I did some digging and figured out how too. This was on XDA archive I found:
Google android wifi tether. its on google code, get the latest experimental version under downloads.
set device profile to nexus one and setup method to netd(master) and it'll work with anything.

What about using a service like Dropbox? Upload a file from one device, and download it to another. If we are talking about video files however, that might not be practical, and then I'd suggest doing it via a PC (if available). I'm not aware of any apps at the moment that allow sharing of filesystems across devices. I'm sure there are possibly ways with things like SSH, but that might be annoying to setup for the average user.

So, without internet, it's highly likely you wouldn't have WiFi on either tablet, how would you network the tablets together without a network?! One of your tablets would have to be a Hotspot to provide the IP address to the other (and I'm not sure about the software available to do this). Even then, you'd need some underlying software that was able to mount/read the sdcard from the other device.
If you did have WiFi, then it's likely you have Internet, in which case you've just answered your own question!
Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying it seems to be a little impractical for the times you don't have internet, in which case be organized enough to transfer files in advance.

Tried to install the Intel Wifi Direct Dashboard on my desktop PC, but had a permission problem with one registry entry, even though I'm an administrator. Will try later with my netbook. Anyway, this software is needed in order to communicate between a phone/tablet with Wifi Direct and a PC.

Have the same issue with my Galaxy Note running stock ICS rom
if you want to connect from android device to android device there's one (and only one) app to do it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.budius.WiFiShoot
this was developed by yours truly, and I did exactly because I noticed there was nothing to make it work.
I tested it between Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, Asus TF300 and Galaxy SII (stock ICS) and all worked fine.
The most problematic of those were the Galaxy Nexus that not always want to connect, but between N7-GalaxySII was flawless.
At the moment the app just works for photo and video but I'll be expanding more, if you guys fancy helping spreading the word about it, I'm really looking forward to see the downloads explode on it.
Alright i been trying to decide between transformer and nexus 7. I just spent the last hour trying to transfer a video file from my galaxy s3 to the transformer. I would suggest to try free variants like Swift FTP server. Have been using it from the beginning of my android adventure, works flawlessly
Use a FTP client like FileZilla to configure the device. Assign manual IPs for each of your android devices in your router and save as different devices in FileZilla, click and connect over WiFi.
The transfer speed is limited only by your WiFi connection speed.
This is one of the free software alternatives

That won't work while i'm on the go and don't have access to WiFi. Was in the car with both tablets and needed to transfer a file from my phone to the tablets and with WiFi-Direct and WiFi Shoot it was a snap and the file was transferred within a minute on the Nexus 7, I have yet to do this on the Transformer do to the lack of WiFi Direct.
Why in the world would Asus REMOVE WiFi Direct in the JB update?
I don't want to start FTP server on the phone and share a hotspot etc WiFi Direct with WiFi Shoot was so simple and effective.
Anyway to add it back without flashing CM9/10?

will have to try that and hopefully it works.

sorry but it won't work, because you still need a wifi hotspot to make it work, and you said you're in a car you don't have wifi hotspot,
basically either FTP or Wifi transfer pro or any WiFi transfer method still requires you to have a wifi hotspot to work, this wifi hotspot is where the 2 devices can transfer files, this wifi hotspot does NOT need internet connection, so even if your wifi hotspot can't go to internet, you can still use it to transfer files.
so what's the solution? use your android to create a virtual wifi hotspot? how? i don't know . on computer i usually use connectify. i believe on android there should be a way to do it.
hopefully you understood what i meant, 'cause i'm not good at explaining

that is the most likely app that works similar to wifi direct and wifi shoot.
@Others
I can create a wifi hotspot with the s3 and did that while in the car for internet on the tablet. Its just I don't want to create a hotspot then start a FTP server every time i need to transfer a file on the go or carry cables. If i ever take my tablet on the go its mainly to watch videos or play games but not for browsing the web so it that sense wifi direct was such a simple way to transfer files.
Bluetooth file transfer might have to do until the JB bootloaders security are beaten and i can install CM9/10.
EDIT:
Using bluetooth file transfer and trying to transfer a 300MB avi will take at least 15 minutes which is extremely slow, god i hate why they removed features. I wish i could install CM, anyone have any idea if that will be possible in the near future or are we in for a long wait?

these are all great suggestions but all require the devices to be on the same network. So this will not work if i'm sitting on train or something which is why wifi direct was so easy and did not require devices to be connected to a wifi network.
I know i can still do this and use any of the above apps using wifi hotspot and will try them out.

Hello,
I have tried yesterday to share a big file via wifi direct between Nexus 4 and a Galaxy S3. I could establish a connection between the 2 devices, but there is no way to share a file without a third party app that have be install on the 2 devices!!! On the Nexus 4 there was no point "Wifi Direct" under "sharing" to send a file. On the S3 there was the point "Wifi direct". But If I send a file, there come "waiting for receiver", but on my Nexus 4 doesn't come any notification to confirm the recipience. Isn't wifi direct a standard, that should work between all devices?!
Is the really no possibility to share a file via wifi direct between 2 devices without 3rd party apps only with on board resources?
I am reallly little bit disappointed from the Nexus 4. OTG doesn't work, wifi direct can share and receive any files.
Works wifi direct on CM10.1? Can you send files there?

i think s-beam is proprietary. while it uses wifi direct.... it will only be compatible with other samsung devices. so yah... you would essentially need and app on both. i am just making an educated guess here and am only posting so ill be subbed and be able to keep track of what unfolds.
Yeah, I think Samsung's version is called s beam, I'm guessing the proprietary version is overriding WiFi direct.. Maybe try turning on both the NFC and WiFi direct at the same time? I'll experiment with my tablet and phone to see.

i would stick wifi shoot on there and be done with it.
If you are like me and have an S3 and a Note 10.1 but never really needed to transfer files between the two until later then read on. I wanted to transfer some music from my tablet to my phone without having to transfer to my laptop, then to my phone. So I did some digging and found a program called fast file transfer which sends files using port 8080 to any android device from another android device. It worked great.
But while digging around in my wifi settings I noticed this thing called wifi direct. I wondered what it was. So I turned it on, on both my phone and tablet, found the file I wanted to transfer and hit the share button. Then I told it to share via wifi direct and bada bing, bada boom, the file was transferred. Very cool. Far easier than fast file transfer. So I will use wifi direct for me and others with Note tablets or S3's and fast file transfer for the other non cool android people.
A bit of a newb moment? Maybe. But I never had the reason to use this particular feature until now. So I just thought I would share and throw this out there, maybe it could help someone else in the future. It was kind of fun to do also.

I found it awhile back much the same way you did and you are correct it is very good and reliable.
Athough WIFI DIRECT works very well with file transfers it is limited to files only. The solution to this limited ability I found is a app called Software Data Cable which allows you to transfer complete folders not just files. It can be found here

This sounds like a use-case for a Wifi Direct file management app. I use HitcherNet to transfer files between my devices over Wifi Direct. It gets speeds up to 30 MB/s and is solid. You will have to check if your device is supported.
