I've removed a bunch of the crap apps that come pre-installed on the Galaxy, however the stupid icons still show up in my app menu. Anyone know how to get rid of these icons??
You can make a custom app draw and place the apps in the order you want. Not sure if you can fully remove an icon but you could create another page and place them all on that.
Edit: How did you remove the stock junk? I've looked in the Setting > apps menu but uninstall was grayed out.
you need to r00t it then use adb shell goto data>app> then use the rm -r command to remove anything u don't want....
I don't know how to create a custom app drawer, can you elaborate?
There has to be a better solution than that btw, anyone else?
open app draw > menu > view type > customizable grid > puts you back at app draw.
Menu > edit > move app icons at will and create multiple pages, pages can have as many for as few icons as you chose.
I have removed these so far from /system/app:
AccountAndSync.apk
AddToHome.apk
Avatar.apk
BuddiesNow.apk
DualClock.apk
DualClock.odex
Email.apk
Email.odex
GoGo.odex
KindleStub.apk
MediaHub.apk
MobiTV.apk
MyAccountStub_4-5-10.apk
Swype-Tips.apk
Telenav.apk

1. Grab ADB from the SDK from Google and put the tools dir somewhere easy to access via command line
2. Install the USB drivers (I had to install 3 drivers)
3. Root the phone
4. CMD to wherever you put the tools directory
5. Run "adb remount"
6. Run "adb shell"
7. (inside of the shell) "su" to root (only if you get a $ prompt, if you have a # prompt skip this step)
8. "cd /system/app"
9. Delete the above apk's
Do not enter any quotes above, only enter the command inside of the quotes.
Any suggestions on any other apk's to delete?
Simply reboot! That's all I did after I removed a bunch of apk and none of the icons show up anymore
I removed them and now it tells me that my camera doesn't work.

just wanted to post an alt method for those that dont like adb (we're out here, i have yet to install the drivers for this phone lol
Alt Method
1. If you’re rooted, purchase Root Manager (a must have tool for rooted androids)
2. Open Root Manager
3. Select System apps
4. Select App Remover
5. Seleck .apk files you don’t want and remove them.
6. Reboot the phone immediately after
7. Now go to menu
8. settings
9. manage applications
10. you will see apps that have their long name/path name “com.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx” and no icons
11. those are the remnants of the apk files you used to have which were locked (hence needing Root Manager)
12. uninstall these like you would any other non OEM/3rd Party app
13. You should be done!

i've removed telenav, mobitv, amazon mp3, and slacker radio so far
Let me know if this works for you guys or if i've missed anything (i am here to learn from this great community as well)
P.S. I had a hard time with Slacker Radio because i deleted the .apk as mentioned above but still had app in the app drawer and it still launched when i selected the icon. Turns out, I had updated it with AppBrain. When i went to uninstall Slacker through manage applications, it removed the update first then gave me a "uninstall unsuccessful". However when i went back to the list of apps, it did remove the icon and revert to "com.slacker.radio" in the apps list, then i went in to uninstall that and it worked fine. So, if any apps have updates on top of "factory", keep that in mind
I have noticed that the slacker radio and layar from samsung/TMO are quite gimped and don't really function very well. They seem to be tied to TMO and wants to charge your TMO account monthly for something. (I didn't really look close, I got to the "we want to charge your account" part and canceled.) I deleted them from the phone and then went to the market and downloaded the "real" apps... Yeah, there is none of that crap on the real apps.
>:-(
Most of the other TMO/Samsung apps did this as well, but I deleted most of them pronto. So if you want to use layar or slacker radio... Do yourself a favor and delete them, and grab them from the market.
I actually use Amazon MP3, so I kept that one.
When, oh when do the CMs a come!? Get along little doggy. Yehaw. *Bullwhip* (Yay, we got Cyanogen!)
I'm just uninstalling them with Titanium Backup (root needed). Things that I think I MAY want back, I just back up... I found that some after uninstalling, you can see in Settings->Applications->Manage, right under 3rd party at 0 bytes. I just uninstalled from there and it appears it removed all traces.
Note: Titanium Backup is acting flaky with restores, apps go back but it FC's before restoring data. Then I have to go back and restore data only. I felt better just reinstalling from market then restoring data only from TB. But that is another thread
could someone tell me what these apk are?
MyAccountStub_4-5-10.apk
vvm-signed.apk
My list of backed up and removed files are
AccountAndSync.apk & odex
Amazon apk
Avatar.apk & odex

Infoalarm.apk & odex (daily briefing)

couple of noob questions for you, that addtohome thing, if you uninstall that, what happens when you long press on an empty space on a home screen? launching addtohome brings up the same menu as a long press so i was wondering. Also what are the .odex files and what do they do?

long press on home screen brings up.... add to home menu
I believe removing that apk just removes the icon in the app draw, Similar to the Avatar APK which is also just an icon with a link... Not too sure about odex but read they should be removed also. When I "removed" items it was more move to a backup folder on the SD card just incase.
Jeez, I found another one. The kindle app (which I use) was not uninstallable. It had a "remove updates" button instead. I click on remove updates, and it basically uninstalled the app, but left all of the shortcuts on the home screen and the app menu orphaned.
I had to install it from the market, uninstall it from the market, and install it from the market again to get it working correctly. Now I have a proper "uninstall" button and market updates for this app.
It seems to me like every T-mobile/Samsung pre-installed app has something wrong with it. I can't wait until we get a real rom for this phone.

vvm-signed.apk - T-Mobile's Visual Voice Mail (If you use this, I recommend deleting this version and installing from the market instead.)
All of the stubs are basically shortcuts to the market to install the real apps. That one is the stub to install the T-Mobile "My Account" app. I removed all of the stubs. They just get in the way IMO.

The addtohome apk just puts a shortcut in the app tray to bring up the same menu as when you long press the background. I found it annoying, so I removed it. Removing it does not effect the menu that pops up when you long press an empty space on the home screen.
As I understand it, Odex files are there to speed up boot and to lessen the dalvik-cache usage a bit.
T1n0m3,
thanks again vvm and myact are removed myact added back from market, use GV for VM.
So its correct and safe to delete the the odex files of any apk you've removed?
after rooting and installing a rom what can safely be removed and what cant?
is there a list of apps/things that I an remove without makin a mess?
thanx
please be specific if you can
I would like some input about this as well. I'd love to make this phone a little bit leaner, but I have no idea what can and can't be removed safely.
Any help is appreciated.
Safer thing might be to list the items you're considering removing (or don't know what they do or are for) and see what others say. For example, Amazon MP3 can be removed with no ill-effects whatsoever.
I would like to know if it is safe to remove the following apps or things...
HTC Setup
QuickOffice
Amazon MP3
Stocks
PDF Viewer
Footprints
Custom keyboards and dialers
E.G. I use xtrSense and it comes with a different keyboard than what came on the stock phone. I want to just use swype and have either the default Sense keyboard or the vanilla android keyboard.
I know you can't delete footprints as its tied to some other applications somehow... unfortunately... And why are you wanting to delete the HTC setup?
Just do a nand backup before you start deleting and you'll be fine.
Btw-I deleted footprints and had no problems.

All of the above, but I might leave "HTC Setup", just to be safe.
As for the keyboards and dialers, I'd also leave them, hmmm, as "backups" (??). They shouldn't run or stay resident in RAM and I'm guessing they take up little storage space (in ROM).
I would like to know the same thing. Here is a list of my apps. I dont know what most of them are. Some I use, some I think I use, others I have no clue. I only have 29mb of internal storage. I have tried everything to use a2sd on my phone. Nothing seems to work. So, I need to thin out my rom and get a little more streamlined. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think ALL of the apps you listed are stock HTC apps. If you're running a Sense-based ROM, there's only so many you can safely/wisely remove. Personally, I'd be looking at the Market Apps you've downloaded and consider removing 1-2 or so that you don't use.

Via the command line, i.e. 'adb', or by using a utility/tool that allows you to delete apps.
I use Ivan's Official ROM 1.0, so it's a Sense-based ROM. One day I documented what I did to get it up and running the way I wanted it. Part of this is deleting a lot of the stock apps. To be safe, what I did was I made another folder and moved apps to that folder one-by-one (or in small groups). This way, if the phone freaked out, I could move something back quickly. Once I was all done, I either offloaded those apps to the SD card or I just deleted them (since I could just push them back from the ROM zip if needed).
I haven't updated these in a while, but it should give you a good idea as to what you can/can not delete. I don't use Sense. I use LauncherPro, the stock lock screen and none of the Sense widgets. Also, that ROM has the .odex files. You can disregard them if your ROM doesn't have them.
Last, but not least ALWAYS backup before you start messing around with stuff. It only takes a few minutes and it could possibly save you a few hours. I use Root Explorer to move things around. You can use whatever you want. You may also use Titanium Backup to uninstall apps, but I haven't fully tested that method.
Good luck!

- Wipe full + dalvik
- Flash Ivan Official 1.0
- Boot
- ./adb install -r Root Explorer.apk

ICS Google Apps Step 12: The Search application will next ask you which browser do you want to use to display the results (I use Dolphin). Then just like that, your new journey begins! Voice Search is supported in some (not all) of the Google Apps.
ICS Google Apps Step 13: Go to Apps. Open Google Earth, wait 60 Seconds. Close Google Earth. Now Open Google Earth again (this allows all the required services to start). You may now use the Search, type in "Space Needle" Click on Search. Wala, cool eh?
Note: This version of Google Earth does not support Voice Search. Soon to come...we will post immediately when we get the update.
ICS Google Apps Step 14: Go to Apps. Open YouTube HD. Sign into Google, if you are not already signed in.
ICS Google Apps Step 15: Go to Apps. Open to test Google Calendar, Chrome, Currents, Earth, Gallery, Gmail, Latitude, Local, Maps, Navigation, Photos, Search, Voice, YouTube HD and Talk

ICS Google Apps Step 18: Now go to your Kindle, using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer, navigate to /sdcard/download
ICS Google Apps Step 19: Next select the Chrome_18.0.1025308.apk file in /sdcard/Download and choose Install
ICS Google Apps Step 20: If there is a warning regarding replacing Chrome, select OK
ICS Google Apps Step 21: Press Install and allow the application to upgrade

ICS Google Apps Step 23: Next Open up Google Play Store, Search for "AVC (Alice)", here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=yourapp24.android.tools.alice_lite&hl=en
ICS Google Apps Step 24: Choose to Install AVC (Alice), Google Play Store will then Download and Install AVC (Alice). This is a full blown Speech Recognition Software, it will even have a conversation with you!
ICS Google Apps Step 25: After you test the features we highly recommend that you upgrade to AVC (Alice) Pro, here is a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=yourapp24.android.tools.aivc

No space left
As I was installing all 28 APKs in the system/app folder, I got a message that there was not enough space to complete the move. how do I make more space? can I delete the APKs that I've already installed?
Solved - move some of the stock apps to data/app. they will still work if stored in that folder.
one step that seems to be missing is to install the APKs. is that right?

No, you do not need to install these APK's, just Reboot per the instructions.
Just FYI, all most of the installs do is just move an apk to /data/app, some are a little more
involved. In the case of the Google Apps, these were sourced from Google Development directly.
They were designed to be used by Manufactures and Developers (like ourselves) with a manual install.
When you copy everything to /system/app and reboot, this triggers the APK's to do what is needed
to function properly. No other install is required, just do not forget the critical lib files (before you reboot).
Terminal emulator isn't working. Is this a common issue or did I miss a step?

Krsmqn,
No this may be a problem with my instructions. Using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer Go into /system/apps, find Term.apk
Click to Open Term.apk, choose Install
If you see an error, click OK to overwrite
Click Install and let the program finish installing.
Did that take care of the issue?
Yes. But now I get error "the process android.process.media has stopped" when trying to download an application from Google play.

ICS Google Apps Step 1: Using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer, double click on each apk and choose install, installing all 28 apk's. You may see a warning about Replacing the application, click OK ignoring the warning. Press Install again. This will initialize each apk. Note: Over 50% will 'fail' on the install, do not worry this is by design and can be ignored, all 28 apk's have been tested and are fully functional.

ICS Google Apps Step 2: Reboot the Kindle.
There is a total of 38 apk's in the google_apps package, did you accidentally install all 38 rather than the 28 above apk's? If you did, no worries we''l get Google Play back online. First try to install/initialize all 28 apk's and reboot.
Ok. Thank You firstly.
Play store still not downloading (same error) and about half the apps didn't install.
Edit: error code 491

OK, sorry for the delay, we have been busy today. Getting to your issue
Error 491 is a communications error. I suspect GoogleServicesFramework.apk
is broken. Please go back to How to: Install Google Play Noob (Simple) Version and perform the complete install again.
It is better to replace these 4 files rather than spend hours trying to figure
out which one is broken. If you perform the steps, you will get Google Play
to function again. If you can not get it to work, PM us, we offer free
support to everyone in the XDA Community.
Hello,
Followed the steps, but google earth and talk both show a message of stopped.
Google earth works right after install, using the open option.
When launched from the app drawer, it only show the stopped message.

Did you reboot the Kindle?
1) Try this, move Talk.apk and Earth.apk back to /sdcard/Download/
2) Now try to reinstall Talk and Earth never moving it back to the /system/app folder. Just perform the install.
Do they open now?
Out of Space?

Did you run out of disk space? Sounds like you copied all 38 apk's in the
google_apps folder to /system/app rather than the selected 28. Is this possible?
Judging by the error, this is what you did. Move the 10 back to /sdcard/download
Then follow our instructions below to reinstall the Google Play Store.

Thanks, prokennexusa.
Earth is working now, even after reboots.
Talk fails during install. Also, after moving it back to download, the icon is not available in the app drawer now. Am I missing something?

Ok, we are almost there.
Let's take the attached version of Talk and move
it to /system/app, change the permissions to Owner: Read/Write Group: Read Others: Read
Then reboot the Kindle, do not install it.
After the reboot go into /apps does it launch now?

KindleHD,
Here we go, hot off my own office Kindle which has Talk functioning.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54456659/Talk.apk
Move the attached file to /system/app
Change the permissions: Owner: Read/Write Group: Read Others: Read
Reboot
If this does not work, we have to replace the files that Talk.apk calls when it is launched.

Hi prokennexusa,
It does not work. Upon reboot, it automatically shows the message that talk has stopped. It shows the message twice. Trying to launch it also displays the same message.

I removed some apps from /system/app
AdService.apk and AdService.odex is needed for Android Market / Google Play
blur_yahoo.apk and blur_yahoo.odex should not be deleted or contacts app crash (force close)
Update:
BlurEmailEngine.apk && BlurEmailEngine.odex needed by SMS/MMS app
The included swype (dated version)can be removed, but you also have to remove a library so file.
To remove swype keyboard
Delete:
/system/app/Swype.apk
/system/lib/libSwypecore.so

Anyone with experience about deleting apps from /system/app ?
SOLVED
I wanted a completely clean ROM to start developing on. I have looked at CleanROM, but it has too many system apps.
These are the system APKs the ROM is currently running with.
Code:
ApexLauncher.apk
Bluetooth.apk
CertInstaller.apk
ConfigUpdater.apk
DefaultContainerService.apk
DownloadProvider.apk
DownloadProviderUi.apk
FusedLocation.apk
HTMLViewer.apk
InputDevices.apk
KeyChain.apk
LatinImeDictionaryPack.apk
LatinImeGoogle.apk
MediaProvider.apk
MediaUploader.apk
Nfc.apk
PackageInstaller.apk
Settings.apk
SettingsProvider.apk
Superuser.apk
SystemUI.apk
UserDictionaryProvider.apk
XT9IME.apk
Honestly the stock Nexus 7 build is pretty damn clean.
If you want to experiment with disabling APKs, try the built-in disable functionality in Settings / Applications / All. Any system app that can be safely disabled (and some that can't) will have a Disable button. This is safer to try out than zapping apk files yourself. If something goes wrong after disabling an app, you'll know you need it back.
I have narrowed down the APKs and it is working fine, but now the middle home navigation button doesn't do anything. I suspect it is one of the google search apps that I deleted, but which one? I always assumed the navigation bar was handled by systemUI. :/

Did you disable the launcher by accident?
Also I have heard that the OS immobilizes the home button until initial device setup is complete and then lets it work. Maybe it has something to do with that.
Thanks!

It was the setupwizard.apk! I deleted it to make changes too the ROM faster.
It makes perfect sense too. The power menu had limited options, the battery drop down bar was gone, and the home button wasn't working. Just like during the setup!
This is what I did to bypass the setupwizard.apk when it start up:
1. Launch adb shell
2. echo "ro.setupwizard.mode=DISABLED" >> /system/build.prop
3. Exit shell and issue an adb reboot.
4. Delete setupwizard.apk if you want
Now the ROM works fine with only 23 APK files in the /system/apps folder! That is a great improvement compared to the original 85.
