Cyanogen 9 and Sprint Visual Voice mail cooperation - Epic 4G General

I decided to start this thread to try and help people like me who want sprint's visual voice mail working with Cyanogen 9 on their Epic 4G. Seeing how this is an issue ignored by developers, and shunned upon google voice fans.
Please do not say use google voice as this is no the discussion for this thread.
Here's what I have gotten with my attempts, anyone else feel free to contribute and maybe we can come up with a solution.
I tried using a backup restored from EL30 into CM9 through Titanium Backup, no message updates, and crashing every time I try to send a message to [email protected].
I grabbed the Sprint VVM apk from the latest Epic 4G Touch leak that is ICS in hopes of having more luck, but here were the results:
Loads up OK,
Goes through account verification on every app startup
No new Voice Mails showing (tested by me calling my phone from land line)
Still getting 9016 text message.
I can record and compile the activation message OK, but as of 30 minutes, it's still sitting in outbox after multiple attempts to resend. No luck.
Does anyone know if there's dependencies the VVM apk relies on for sprint to phone communications?
What luck has others taken and what are your results?
If I can get this issue, and possibly find a way to get the PRL updates back, then ICS will be golden and good for everyday use for me (Main thing is the VVM)

I installed the same vvm. Worked with no problems on the first try and haven't had a problem yet. Only been a short time, but had the GF call a few times and it works every time.

Worked for me too. Still get the 9016 text but got my voicemail in 5 seconds.

Guess I spoke to soon. Just got 4 vvm texts.

Successes
So when you two installed it, it worked flawlessly (minus the text issue) out of the gate?
As I sit now, I still have not received my voice mail and I'm now wondering what is different between my install and yours.
I currently get an account verification error with Visual Voice Mail version T5.2.1.0 taken from a copy of epic 4G Touch FC07.
I installed this copy by transferring the APK to my SDCard, then using ES File Explorer to install.
I just tried resetting the data through the applications management through settings, it loaded up the default two messages (about and welcome). Then gives me the account verification error prompt, then the customize mailbox prompt, but no message downloading. What ideas do you two have that could help.

did you try uninstalling and reinstalling?

Uhhh, I might be missing something but to quote the CM9 team from their Facebook page. "Sprint Visual Voicemail now works on CM9, meaning we now have three options for visual voicemail on Epic! Read the Customization Guide for CWM5 flashable .zip and setup instructions if you want to use it. Be aware that there are currently glitches.

Apology maybe? I dunno Google Voice is amazing!

Based on your suggestion, I just did, still no effect though.
When you go to Personalize voicemail in voicemail settings, does it do anything for you? For me it doesn't do anything.

As much as I like VVM it gives me trouble on CM7 and 9. An outgoing VM gets stuck and its the activation VM to get the services started. As a solution I just downloaded youmail from the market and it does the job. Its got a few advertisements but at least I dont miss important messages. Hope this helps!

Solved
OK, after seeing the posting about the facebook link, I did check it out and tried it. That did seem to solved the solution at least temporarily. There is some rendering issues, really minor, but after sending me a voice message, I did receive the rest of my voice mails (and the texts with them).
To answer one of my original questions, there does appear to be a dependency somewhere that's been missing. I opened the zip file to find a second file in it called 80-sprint-vvm.sh which I assume is a form of work around script.
Me not having any programming language knowledge couldn't say the details of the sh file, but I'm sure more knowledgeable people can decipher it.
I will see if I can come up with a full solution that can be more permanent, but for now this upgrades Cyanogen 9 to daily driver status. Another note, I noticed my topic quickly jumped to the top of google's search results for Cyanogen 9 Visual Voice Mail, so maybe there was some good out of this.

If you haven't tried the CWM zip file mentioned at the facebook link, give it a shot. It worked for me at least. Install it, then compose a voice mail to yourself, and the rest followed along.

Gah.
I flashed, and when I rebooted phone, it automatically provisioned the app before i even opened it.
I cant' get the VMs to appear there, only can get to them through dialer.
What is this moron (me) doing wrong? I'm missing a step somewhere...

You are not the only one. Edfunkycold is having the same problem as well as a few others. I already had the voicemail semi-working and provisioned on my phone before installing the E4GT version. And that worked immediately after installing.

Oh, jeez, ok. I'd say good, but it's not good, lol!
I had this issue with SRF 1.2, but I did something to fix it. Don't remember at all what that something is.
Or, maybe edfunkyfresh and I need new names!!!!

I posted on several threads to see if anyone has any ideas how to get this working. Mine provisioned, set all up I get the text message but the app doesn't download voicemails and I don't even get the voicemail notification icon. I know the VM is there because of the 9016 text but I still have to dial 1 on the dialer to manually get to my voicemails. Anyone out there throw some ideas out, I just can't stand when something is supposed to work and doesn't.

Man this sucks I hope you guys get it figured out.. I use PF Voicemail because it has a web portal and email missed call notification (even if your phone is dead).. But the app is kinda ugly.. Good luck

I hate to be that guy but this belongs in general as nothing was developed.

I agree it belongs in general, but disagree because it has developed an issue for me as to why it doesn't work for me. . Also just realized forum time posting is off by an hour

[BUG] Ghost Message Waiting Indicator in AOSP 2.1 / 2.0.1

This is the only thing that has stopped me from making the switch to one of Darchstar's new ROMs. I was very hesitant to make a thread about this but I've received PMs from other people experiencing the same issue. Here's hoping we can get this figured out.
Whenever I install a 2.1 or 2.0.1 ROM I get a notification telling me that I have a voicemail waiting. I click the notification and it automatically dials *86.
"Thanks for calling Helio by Virgin Mobile. Please enter your mobile number beginning with your area code." That's definitely not right.
I call my Sprint Voicemail box and I have no messages. I call myself and leave a message and then delete it. Nothing.
I go into "Call Settings" and change my voicemail number and the notification remains.
I registered with Google Voice. The notification stayed. I left a Google Voice voicemail and deleted it... no change.
I RUU'd, re-rooted and flashed darchstar's ROM. Mockingly, the notification appeared immediately.
I installed Flip's 2.1 Sense ROM and the Indicator showed up immediately, but I was able to clear it in the Settings menu. (Settings > Call Settings > Clear Voicemail Notification) -- This option isn't available in the AOSP ROMs. I've tried to push the settings APK from Flip's ROM, but of course the settings program does nothing but forceclose on AOSP.
I'd just switch to Flip's ROM and manually remove Sense, but AFAIK there is no fix for the Market in that ROM as of yet.
I've also called Sprint regarding the issue. I hoped that a simple reset of my voicemail box would resolve the issue. No dice. I did, however, confuse the heck out of a Tech Support representative at least.
I am not nearly as experienced with Android Development as I'd like to be, but I am trying to learn. I've poked through the SDK documentation and it seems like I might be able to completely disable that notification if I knew what I was doing a little better. This would be fine being that I've fully switched my voicemail box to Google Voice.
I have managed to get the notification to go away for a period of time. If I wipe, flash, wipe, flash enough I'll boot and the notification won't be there. Each and every single time it comes back eventually. I got it to go away for approx 7 hours about a week ago. I was so pissed when it came back...
The closest thing to a solution that I've came across is going into framework-res and removing the PNG for the voicemail notification. At least, I don't have to stare at that icon all day long that way.
Does anyone have any ideas that I haven't covered above?
You know Im right there with you. I have tried just about everything you outlined and I still couldnt get it to go away more than a few hours. Fresh 2.1 did slightly help the situation by being able to clear it but as soon as I restarted, there it was again.
Just out of curiosity Illogic, have you tried a new Micro SD card?

I have been waiting on a 8gb class 6 for 2 and a half weeks. I was gonna test when it came in. I have partitioned many times but I wonder if it is possible something is just stuck on it and its causing this issue. I dont know, maybe im just on my last ideas about it.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with the fact that we are missing visual voicemail on these unofficial builds.
When we receive a Sprint Voicemail on a ROM without VVM we get a SMS message that would normally be filtered out by the VVM app. When you clear your voicemail box you get a SMS that looks like it's meant to turn the message waiting indicator off, but the phone doesn't recognize it.
Been pulling my hair out over this for too long.

He mentioned that he had in the first post. It was also stated that there is no way to remove the icon. If he is like me, the icon is annoying.
No, he mentioned he tried giving himself a voicemail in his Google Voice number. I mean switching from Sprint Voicemail over to Google Voicemail. That's what I did and I solved this problem.

Illogic, I did it on Freshs 2.1 and it worked because Freshes has the clear voice mail option in settings. Not to mention, for some reason Freshs also integrated GV into the voice mail settings. It was actually pretty cool.
What I did was change the Voicemail setting in AOSP 2.1 to Google Voicemail. I just left it at that (didn't change it back to Sprint) because I like GV better. But I don't get the ghost notification with my voicemail handled by GV.

[Guide] Getting ride of the Phantom Voice Mail Icon (NOT THE TEXT MESSAGE ISSUE)

Thanks to a suggestion made by a follow XDA Member (Can't remember his name sorry!!)
Actually you can fix the Voice Mail Icon issue!!! The one that shows up in the top left corner, NOT the text mail issue.
Takes an OLD sprint phone and some time.
First, put your EVO back to a STOCK ROOTED ROM.
Get your old phone out of the junk drawer (HAS TO BE A NON ANDROID PHONE) and call Sprint. Have the OLD phone switched back onto your account (thus removing your EVO from your account).
Once the OLD phone is activated follow all the steps to activate your voice mail account.
Call your phone from a land line phone and leave yourself a message, then call your voice mail on your old phone and delete it. MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OTHER MESSAGES IN YOUR YOUR VOICE MAIL ACCOUNT.
Now you can call Sprint back and reset up your EVO. Once your EVO is all set up your EVO will reprovision your VM account. Follow all the instructions to get your VM account setup again. This would be a good time to update all the radios, PRI and PRL and make sure you update your profile.
No go back into recovery and wipe all and either NAN Droid back to your old ROM or start fresh. If you Nandroid back to a ROM with the VM Icon on it, don't worry it will clear off.
Use Google Voice if you can from this point forward. I have flashed many AOSP ROMs since going through all these steps and I no longer have to STARE at the stupid VM Icon.
Bump this back up for those that might not have seen this fix. Takes some time to get it all done but I keep seeing post on how to get rid of the Voicemail Icon.
This process works perfectly.
Thanks, I'm tempted to try, but such a pain in the ass.

Yes it is but I am soooo glad that damn ICON is gone it was worth the time and effort. I have flashed back and forth between Sense and AOSP ROMs several times in the last few weeks and I have NOT had the voice Mail ICON sense.
Fixed!!!!!!!!! Posted my update on page 2 of this thread.
Thank you for posting this and explaining the issue in the unofficial CM7 thread. I was getting sick of people saying "use Google Voice" when they have no idea what they are talking about.

I just tried this on my Sprint Hero and it worked like a charm. I have three small things to add:
1. You actually don't even have to call Sprint or chat. All you have to go is log onto mysprint.sprint.com, on the main page scroll down to your device, and select "Activate a new phone" from the "Manage my device" pulldown.
2. If you get a "Data Call Failure: Error Code 67" message when you first reactivate your Hero/Evo, just update your Profile and everything should be fine. You may need wifi to do this.
2. I would recommend that once you switch back to your Hero/Evo, flash a new rom rather than nandroiding back to one with the voicemail issue. I chose to try a nandroid first, and the issue was still present (although this may have been because I had GV messages in my inbox, not sure on this). However, as soon as I booted up a clean copy of AOSP, the notification was gone.
I have been searching for a fix for this issue for months. Thank you so much for posting this!
Hey, this is great. I hate talking to sprint, and that was the only thing stopping me. Will try this tonight. Thanks!

Same here. It helped that I had a land-line, and 2 sprint phones (EVO and my old dumb-phone)
I think I got lucky yesterday though. The night before I got up to level 3 tech and all they did was re-provision my voicemail account and that didn't fix it. Re-provisioning the voicemail does nothing, so you can tell them that if they want to try that first... it is a waste of time.
I got a level 1 guy yesterday and luckily, he had seen this problem before and was so easy to work with.
One thing he mentioned that may help people... when he sent me a voicemail on my old phone to delete, he marked the voicemail as URGENT. Not sure why that may help, but it worked for me.
I can use MIUI now without any New Voicemail (2) notifications!!!!!!!!!! I never thought I would see the day. Big thanks to the original poster.
Not sure, but I think you would be able to re-provision using EPST. Back in the Hero days when we lost data we would dial ##data# and enter MSL and reset the data. The phone would reboot and all was good! I wonder if something like this would work for voicemail. I have not experienced this problem, just trying to help.

This is true, however....for some reason when I tried to do this, it gave me an error message and I still had to contact Sprint. I guess it depends on the phone you are switching to. So YMMV.

How does Sprint sync your real voicemail box with Visual Voicemail?

Happily running CM7 with one issue:
If I dial my own number (or longpress "1" in the dialer) to access my real voicemail box, I have many "new" messages.
But I have been receiving, listening to, and deleting these same messages using the Sprint Visual Voicemail program installed as per the usual method (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12219741&postcount=2 under "visual voicemail" for the one-sentence version).
Why are the two voicemail "boxes" not in sync?
I'm pretty convinced this is a bug-not-a-feature because it gives two different versions of the "truth" to anyone who uses both methods to check VM (because, say, your bluetooth headset doesn't allow you to hear locally-stored VVM audio files.. but that's another topic..). I'm not even sure what happens when this goes on for a month or two- do callers hear some kind of "mailbox full" announcement? Do the oldest messages just go away once they reach a certain age?
I have returned to a sense-based ROM and tried to "update my profile" and PRL, I have sent a VVM to [email protected], and I have gotten the little "toast" that says I have been provisioned successfully. But no sync. I have rebooted. I have waited overnight. I have turned off wi-fi to force 3G communication with Sprint. I have scoured the internet for these and other recommendations. Still no sync. The only thing I haven't done is called Sprint and asked them to get involved (which of course is a bit of a last resort considering we are talking about a rooted phone here).
So I'm asking for help from a) anyone who has experienced this and solved it and/or b) anyone who can shed some light on how Sprint VVM synchronization works.
Thanks in advance...
PS- I already know I can always "solve" my Sprint VVM issues by switching to Google Voice: I'm sure GV is great, but my question is not about GV. I'm just looking for basic information on the signalling method Sprint uses to synchronize your VVM with the cloud. Thanks!
I've been wondering and experiencing the same exact stuff that you mentioned, any input is appreciated here too!

After reading your post I pressed 1 to go into my voicemail and it said I had 12 messages. Never noticed this issue before (I never actually call for my messages, I just use the app), very strange. Unfortunately I don't know the answer.
Thanks ausch- I should have cited your FAQ as another excellent one-sentence summary of the basic method for getting Sprint VVM to run on CM7. And then of course there's this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982966 which spells it out a little more explicitly and, after getting a bunch of blog mentions at some point, had quite a bit of traffic for awhile. I originally reported this issue there but got no response after a few days so I just started up a new thread to get some more visibility.
I think you need another apk installed for that part to work.
This one. I think it is what updates your visual voicemail and deletes messages, not positive though.

Lol, yeah when I was typing all that **** up I got lazy and just wrote it up real quick. Probably should have gone a little more in depth.
I installed it too (thank you for the suggestion aimbdd) but it force closes a lot and generally does not seem to fix my issue.
I'm getting plenty of notifications (my VVM "widget" shows the right number of unheard messages and the stock android VM notification up in the status bar shows the right number as well), the version is 5.1.0.34, and everything seems to function pretty well with this one exception.
I see references to Sprint_App_Updater.apk in lots of places (here's an example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7246771&postcount=35 ) but it's not clear to me if the app is actually essential to the VM sync issue I'm talking about.
And one last thing, just a random quote (from http://www.evo4gforum.net/htc-evo-4g-how-to/visual-voicemail-9708/ ) from a person who had the exact *opposite* issue: he prefers using phone-call-based voicemail and wanted his visual voicemails to go away: "I did talk with Sprint and ... I asked them why are the messages that I delete on Sprint VM (#1) still going to VVM and not being deleted. No real answer except for that's the way the VVM app works. He assured me that if I delete a VVM that it will also delete it on Sprint's (#1), but for whatever reason it doesn't work the opposite way. "
This last sentence tells me there is supposed to be at least one-way sync.
I accept that the VVM app holds previously-downloaded audio files and it may not be desired (or even feasible) for Sprint to reach into your phone and delete a static audio file just just because you called into your voicemail and manually erased the original voicemail that spawned it. So maybe we will never have two-way sync.
But that quote above clearly promises that when things are functioning normally the mailboxes *do* sync in the direction I care about: if you delete a message from your phone, a signal goes back to the cloud so that the original is deleted there also.

I think you need another apk installed for that part to work.
This one. I think it is what updates your visual voicemail and deletes messages, not positive though.

I just got a voicemail and it was still in Sprint's system after deleting it from the app so I don't think this fixes the problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Today's PRL update did not change the behavior.
I might start casting about for answers outside the EVO 4G forum. Seems like it would be a generic Sprint issue that would apply to more than just EVO users..
Well just to close this out, I did find a solution after posting in various other threads until someone came up with the simple suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling.
So the issue that prompted my question is resolved and my voicemail boxes *do* sync.
But I still never did find out *how* they sync.
Seems strange the underlying sync mechanism isn't more widely understood. Guess I'll let it drop for now. Thanks to everyone who chimed in.

Nevermind, I found the fix/culprit (go sms) and now I'm all good.

[Q] Google Voice and SMS

So, I've been trying to get SMS working through google voice on my NC, with the latest nightly of CM7 running.
I got the latest "working" google voice I could find linked here on the forums. Got it setup and was able to get the voicemails on my account...
My issue though, is that I can't for the life of me get texting to work. Most of the threads I find on here about it are mostly people saying "It just worked for me." ...unfortunately, that doesn't really help if it didn't "just work".
Anyone have any tips on how to get it working, if it doesn't out of the box?
try DESKSMS

I Use DeskSMS for all my texting, its by far the best. It can link up through several accounts, and i use Trillian as my client, but you can use any client.(which i got free from Amazon free app day a while ago)....its still apparently in Beta, and i think its almost finished. Ive had it from the very beginning. Its FREE right now on the market, until they release the final version. Hope this helps...at least with the texting its flawless!
Bobby
Thanks for the info.
DeskSMS looks like it links up to itself running on your phone. I'm not really looking for something like that (phone's old school and not a droid) since it's not really a viable option.
I see people talking about how they are using Gvoice to send texts. Which is what I'm trying to get working, but it just absolutely refuses to. Like I was saying, I can access voicemails through the gvoice app. When I try to send a message in the messaging app, all I get is a "Service is unavailable" message.
I use the latest version in the market and have never had a problem with it.
This right here is your problem:

You need to use the Google Voice app to send the SMS messages, not the native Android App.
Thanks dormido.
I actually just saw something about that while I was browsing around between the last post and yours.
The posting I had found said something about hitting "t" to bring up the texting window. I haven't gotten the keyboard up in the GV app yet, but I guess I'll have to look at it a little more since I have confirmation that's how it's done now.
Thanks
Actually....
I figured this out now.
Apparently, since I've had the same google voice number since it was closed beta (and haven't really used it since). It didn't have all the features enabled anymore. The site was missing the voicemail and text widgets as well. Changed to a new Gvoice number in settings, and it all works fine now.
I feel like an idiot for it being such a basic fix.

Handscent Android group chat like iPhone

Well here it is my fellow androids. We asked for it and Handcent fell through. We should all thank Handcent and their developers for this new big update. Keep in mind this app is still in Beta stage. However, I tested it for a couple of days and I was able to chat with my fellow iPhone lovers. I was also able to chat with verizon Galaxy Nexus, Thunderbolt and LG revolution. I havent had a chance to chat with none Verizon phones. You guys will be our testers. Please list all bugs here and Ill forward the list to the developer. So far there are two bugs with this build. The first bug is double notifications on group mms and the second one is blurry background images with Droid Razor phones
Setup:
1. You must make this app default messaging app for all MMS and SMS.
"settings"->application settings->Default Messaging Application-> All(SMS&MMS)
2. You must enable Thread Group Conversation. Its all the way down in application settings
"settings"->application settings->group messaging->check Thread Group conversation
3. MMS retrieval should be set to Auto unless you want to download each group message.
4. You might experience some lag as the group mms pour in one after another. I think this is normal cuz I do experience it on my Razor maxx using the stock app since it has this this feature built in. In addition, I asked my freind with iPhone 4s if he experiences lag when all these group messages pour in and he said yes. Sometimes he cant touch his phone until all the messages have been received
5. Be gentle on me if I missed any bugs. Im already in the Dog house in my wifes book for spending too much time on this project. This is the reason why the developer is releasing the app for public feedback.
File got updated:
Fixed double notification
fixed some bugs
This file not in market, so you guys are Handcent beta testers.

Loving the capability! It seems to be working well.
Have one question/bug. Some replies say "Me:" and they go to the group. Some replies say "Me to name: and they are going individually to the group it appears.
I did not do anything different I don't think on any of the replies but I may be missing something or this could be a bug.
Thanks for the great feature!

What phone are you using? Can you send a screen shot. In other words when you reply to message, you are replying to yourself also? I had that at first was fixed. I wonder if each phone will have that bug

so testing it with cm9 on HTC evo 3D (sprint) doesn't seem to want to send group messages at all. Just get that continuous loading symbol and never sends. I'll test it on stock first and see if it is the problem with the rom and report back

The file has been update. Hopefully fix your issue.
So far I have had it "break" and resort to sending separate messages once. I have three theories as to why...
It may have been due to not completely removing my old Handcent beta first.
I was Texting with friends pretty frequently, and I noticed if I exit the thread and re-enter it would "convert to MMS", Maybe it drops out of MMS if you send several texts in a row?
The thread I was sending to had my google voice number in it, so I was essentially sending messages to myself at the same time.
Sometimes if you have a group message with say Joe Smith as a participant and a separate thread with Joe, getting the group text will show a notification for the separate thread and you have to do "mark as read" to fix it.
I am on a HTC Thunderbolt BTW.
Did not try the updated file yet, downloading now.

I think the new file supposed to fix this since they did find a bug. please post your results after you install new file
It works well for me.
Is there anything I can do about the <Subject: New Message> that shows up before every message?

An issue happens when you send texts too quickly it sends you back to inbox and doesn't display the messages. From what my friends tell me it displays something weird in their group chat. I have to visually see it to confirm. Love that it actually works though

How is it supposed to work? I tried it with my friend who has an iPhone but it didn't send messages via Internet service but normaly as SMS messages. Friend with iPhone tried to pull his sim card out of phone with no succes. Does it need any special settings to make it work?
Anyway I don't care much cause I have all my SMS free I just wanted to try that function.
I use HC Talk service to chat with my girlfriend everyday so there's no problem about functionless HC Service

In the first post is suggests going to settings>application settings>default messaging application>set it to all sms and mms.
Then settings again>application settings>scroll all the way down>check the thread group conversation box.
Then should work
