I have both input and questions.
First question, directed mostly to the devs who've started this and the average transformer owner's impression of what's going on:
What do you see the future of this tablet being? do you see it as very successful with a lot of roms, or do you see it as something that slides by with not much more dev than modified stock roms?
I will update this post with information for people interested in buying the Transformer and explicitly interested in development as soon as there is new information.
Another set of points:
I've seen people ask several questions in this forum, and i've congregated these ideas and some of my own.
CyanogenMod (with enhancements from the viewsonic Gslate)
Ubuntu
Multi-booting off SD or 16g main partition
Other roms from other tablets (as cool device-manufacturer software overlays come out)
AOSP for development (honeycomb of course, google has to release source )
KERNELS KERNELS KERNELS (i can see already that this is the strongpoint in XOOM development insofar)

Thanks for reading. This thread will hopefully become a congregation of information for people who WANT TO BE DEVELOPERS and are considering BUYING THIS DEVICE. I want this Tablet to be as good as a platform as my G1 has been (it's still hoppin' in there ), and what i've seen spring up on devices like the Galaxy S line (2 of those devices here), and with the xoom already.

Does this forum have a sleepless ninja?
Let me explain: I am currently looking to buy a tablet for college and I am looking to get the most out of my tablet for my studies, for enjoyment and for understanding in this technological realm. Now, to me it is between the Xoom and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and all signs point to the tab. Better screen, lighter, thinner, newer, faster etc. etc. (even the disadvantages, HDMI/USB/SD Card don't bother me as I don't really use any of that) But the Xoom has that one intangible, sleepless ninja. He shows xoom owners how to do this, how to do that and I just think the advantage of having a walk through is so high on my list that it might out weight a lot of the advantages the Tab has. Its this guy that is keeping me drawn to the Xoom, so I ask you either A) Does this forum/ community have a dedicated man like this? or B) Does anyone know if one is coming or if I did decide to get a tab would one be liked?

At the moment the GT10.1 is running stock version of Honeycomb, stock being the "pure" OS form no 2nd company has added anything or altered the software, this is important to know. This being said the stock version does not have "guides" or a "sleepless ninja", it will however guide you through the initial process of signing in to your accounts like Google or push email accounts.
With this being addressed Samsung does have a "layer" that goes over the "stock" Android OS and this is called Touchwiz. Samsung has not implemented this yet for their own reasons but has recently announced that it is coming "soon" as a download update. This Touchwiz may have your "secret ninjas". Touchwiz being their own creation may have "ninjas" to help explain and show all the new "bells" and "whistles" and abilities that Touchwiz will be able to do. Unfortunately like I said before Samsung has announced that is will be coming soon so till then it is the stock non "ninja" OS.
On a personal note I find the stock Honeycomb Android very intuitive and practical.( so much so that I cannot wait for the Touchwiz version ) Also I find the exploration to be half the fun Also there are TONS of websites that help you discover anything you need to know about Android on the webz and of course here in XDA. Although many do get a bit .....annoyed....some times with repeat questions someone will most usually scrape some patience and help you out, I will say to use the search option most generously though I have had my GT10.1 for over a week now and love it I am by no means a wiz but thanks to many here I am "Sleepless Ninja" free! Good luck with your choice and have fun learning.

I do agree that the search feature needs to be used and I did. Now, I thank you for your response BUT if you had read my post you might have seen the link to sleepless ninjas website. Sleepless Ninja is a real physical person, sleeplessninja.com. The Xoom doesn't have a "sleepless ninja" embedded either, what it has is a man dedicated to trying to help out the community, with tutorials, video how-tos and so on. I was wondering if the Tab community has that same type of person or group of people who go out of their way to help the community. I am a visual learner and so videos are something I enjoy seeing as I think they help. If this is what someone here has I would love to see it.

I don't really see the point of this "real physical person" online. We have tons of threads dedicated to helping newbie and seriously though, most of what's applied to the XOOM will also work on the Tab as they both run stock-enough HC.
But if you can't be bothered to do a little googling/searching, maybe the XOOM and sleeplessninja are best for you.

More than anything else it is the videos that I like. I remember and understand things when I see them performed and videos to me give me that edge to be confident and know enough about what I am doing to actually jump for it.
Now,that being said the preponderance of threads, guides, walkthtoughs and the like here leaves little to be desired but curiosity did get me and, for the most part, the helpful nature of the people in this forum has shined through.

If you're buying a tab based on the degree of handholding available, the iPad is the best bet currently. Ideology aside, it has the best ecosystem, the best stable of apps, and the best peer-support, if based on size of userbase alone.
I understand, though, that ideology, or at least philosophical outlook, is pretty important. It's why XDA exists, after all, else we'd all be nibbling at S. Job's toes by now.
Then, on the issue of "durability" of peer support, none of the current Android (or RIM, or TouchPad) is a good buy. Reason is that part of the first wave of 'droid tabs have yet to show. And after that, there'll be yet a second wave of tabs before the year is out (hopefully outfitted with ICS). In short, there will be a deluge of tabs, each of which will have its little pool of users, and all of which will have very short lives. Does not bode well for that elusive "Sleepless Ninja" to pop into existence.
These, as compared to one big homogenous iPad collective. If your field is statistics, there's no contest.
But perhaps you favor fictional literature, where we can be the few Merry Men against the iHorde innumerable. Oops, getting my 'phores mixed with my phives here.. I've seen many people like me, sad to know after buying this great device that it is as up this moment "unrootable" and therefore cannot be customized with custom ROMs and custom Kernels. Most of them on this thread.

The dev who made this rooting method is working in breaking the new SBK, the major problem that he and his team have is that they don't own a B70 or B80 with new SBK Asus eee pad transformer, so it's difficult for them to test things since they don't have where to test them. They aren't going to buy a new transformer just to find a way to root, they are trying to find some kind of solution.
The lastest news is that it seam that the old nvflash binary doen't work with the new sbk, they are trying to modify the binary so ti can work with new sbk.

After his response I decided to create a thread to help the devs buying a new Transformer with the new SBK v2 so they can help us all. Rumors are starting to surface that indicates that we have given up on working on this. This is by no means the case. We are still hard at work. Things are definitely taking longer than expected.
There is one main issue:
The BootROM in B70+ devices has been bumped to a newer revision. Nvflash works by sending a miniloader to the device, which then handles receiving the actual bootloader.bin. The miniloader included in current nvflash binaries appears to crash well before the bootloader.bin is sent.
So, how do we move on?
Well, I hate to say it, but I really need to get my hands on a new SBK device (B70 or B80). Bricked is OK. As long as APX mode works over USB, it’s ok. Heck, even a broken screen is OK.
Requirements:
- Cheap
- APX Mode works
- Within EU
- Can charge ok
- Cheap
There’s no requirement that any accessories are included. I already have a B50 TF with working charger.

I am the recipient of a lovely, un-rootable B70 and I donated a few bucks to show my support (5 bucks, ain't much, but if we got a LOT of those small donations, these guys can make things happen.) It's like the price of a sandwich, you know? It's not too fair to ***** and moan that you got a raw deal, and then expect someone else to solve your dillema.
Come on, if you need the devs to make things possible, and you have no technical contribution, at least donate waht you can. It could mean the dif between waiting 2 more moths, or actually seeing this soon.
Well.. even if they do not want it, it's certainly a good incentive anyways.. I think it wont hurt them right?

You're in the wrong place, pal. If you really want an answer, you'll have to find a connection within Motorola... if they even have a hard date set. If you want to be taken seriously, take time to search and read before posting a question. You'd find dozens of threads on the topic in the xoom forums alone (unfortunately, since others choose not to searrch, too) and you'd quickly learn there is no answer to your question here.
You can have ICS on your xoom today if you want it, just not from Moto. Again, do some reading and research and you can determine whether available alternatives are right for you, or whether to wait for a not-yet-announced official update.
Nearly everyone here is helpful and will assist if you do your homework and still have questions... but you have to take yourself and your own questions seriously before you can expect anyone else to do so... or you can choose to be roasted.

I did searched(not in XDA, I searched on google) for the answer and found a lot of articles about the XOOM getting the ICS update but they all were very old so I thought that maybe Motorola released a date for the update and I didn't found an answer for that so I decided to ask here.

The problem is, and always will be - you can never set a solid release date for software upgrades when it comes to this 'chain' that the update must go through in order to be released to us.
From a manufacturer and carrier standpoint, they could never give even the slightest hint of a date for a software release until its imminently close. Reason being, there are so many variables and factors affecting a particular update. If they gave any sort of date other than "soon", then if they missed that date that everyone was expecting - customers would blow a gasket.
So essentially, from their standpoint, it is MUCH safer to keep from giving any sort of date of release.
Bottom Line: An official ICS update should be coming sometime soon. Speculation says the U.S. Wifi-only XOOM will be the first, and then others will soon follow. That is the most we know at this point.
So pull up a chair, grab a beer, and join the rest of us as we compulsively surf these android forums every day for the next piece of news to come forward.

I had some good guidance (some nice, some not so nice) when I first started using xda, so glad to pass it along. The best was not to start a new thread except as a last resort - most questions are already asked and answered somewhere, and if not there is a likely an existing thread/discussion in which the question fits. For the most part, xda members aren't jerks and are extremely helpful... but the frustration factor rises quickly when the same questions are asked and answered repeatedly. As you'll probably be told at some time, it is a developers forum not really a users forum... they've just chosen to let us in (because we help test what they're dev'ing).
One more suggestion - be more careful with your topic titles. I opened the thread to read assuming you were posting some official announcement... and would bet most others did, too. Be more clear with the title and you increase the odds that you'll get readers that can/will help.
BTW, I'm still getting used to the xda search function (a bit cumbersome, works best in my opinion searching within a subforum), and often prefer a Google search myself. If you add "xda" to your Google search terms, you'll often find what you need.

I understand your concern, the more they wait the less we can play with our toy until that other date (ya know, 23/12/2012)
I'll give you a real answer. No body knows.
It seems like the last few updates were dropped with no prior warning. I assume ICS will be a different situation and they would at least give a little heads up (or so I would hope.) If you have a 4G VZW XOOM, expect to wait another month so Verizon can tinker around with it first.
Or, if you want it now, just go to the dev section and flash the wonderful EOS ROM. It takes all of 15 minutes to do if you're already rooted. In fact, I spent more time downloading the files than I did actually flashing the recovery and the ROM + a few bits and pieces that make it work. It's well worth it.

After getting dragged along month-to-month waiting for an official Android update with previous devices, I've come to the personal conclusion that I'll never wait for an official Android update ever again. The custom ROMs from these forums are always better and are always available far in advance of any official release.

Team EOS (formerly Team Tiamat) has proved to be one of the elite Android dev teams in my opinion and are worth following because they always have something new to try out.
Typically, the update will come in waves and there will be a leak to the blogs a few days before...
Kudos to the people who took the OP and his question seriously. There's no justification for being a d*** to someone who probably isn't familiar with all of the ins and outs of XDA. Come on now...
Anyway, you can watch paint dry in way less time than a carrier or OEM will deliver an official Android version update to their devices (assuming you're using something other than a Nexus device) so custom ROMs are definitely the way to go. It is not uncommon for devs here to release official ROMs before the carriers/OEMs LOL! To that end, check out one of the ICS ROMs from Team EOS in the Xoom development section. Root your Xoom if you haven't done so already, flash one of their ICS ROMs and enjoy . The devs here on XDA are good for releasing ROMs and updates in a timely manner.
Interested in re-rooting my KF. Did it a week or so after I first got it back in November, and having nothing of real note (for me), let the update unroot it.
Looking at things now, it's virtually impossible to determine (if you haven't kept up on a daily basis), exactly what is going on now. Many utilities claiming to root, make it easy to root, re-flash, recover, etc.
Could someone (or several someones) please put together a sticky or series of stickies that is kept up-to-date (and NOT allow posting to, so it is simply ONE post that is updated, and if there is some reason to have ancient history, the most recent info is at the TOP of that ONE post) that would cover the following:
What utility to use to root the KF
What utility to use for recovery, etc. (I assume TWRP)
What each of these utilities does, has, etc. (some seem to have more bundled in them, and at this stage, I can't tell who's got what bundled that does what and more importantly, WHY I want to use utility A over utility B)
Is there one utility that "has it all" and makes it pretty easy and goof-proof?
Updated status and ETA of CM9 or other Android 4.x ROM for the KF (Yes, I know the devs have said "don't bug me", but it's been quite a while now, and we still don't seem to have HWA for video on CM9/etc. So, a "rough" ETA? I'm a developer too, so I know these things aren't always exact, but are we a week/month/3 months/year/when pigs fly away from potentially having ALL of the HW supported on the KF with CM9? At least I can go away for a while, come back at some time when the ETA is supposed to be reached, and do a check)
While Amazon VOD was important to me at the beginning, I've been exclusively using Netflix, so I'm not sure if having the Amazon video disabled due to rooting is an issue to me anymore. But HWA is an issue for watching videos on Netflix or over my DLNA server at home.
The stickies need to be updated by the authors - NOT a reply to the thread the author of the utility started. This stuff is simply too time-consuming to wander through, and attempt to wonder if "idiot A" bricked his KF due to a bug in the utility, didn't follow instructions, or whatever 27 posts later. I'm looking for a direct "here's the utility, here's the instructions, here's why you want this over this" kind of thing.
Here's my 2 cents, take them for what they are worth.
In my opinion, Kindle Fire Utility is sort of the one stop shop for all things root/recovery/etc. and it has TWRP built in. It is super easy to use in my opinion and you can get burritoroot, firefirefire bootloader and TWRP all at one time.

I rooted with BurritoRoot, heavily modded the stock ROM, which was my daily for several weeks. I then used gscript to install CWM and FireFireFire and then installed Kang ICS ROM.
But for someone just starting out, KFU seems to be the way to go. I would have used it to install recovery, etc., but for user error (that is, my own). That's my two cents.

If you don't have time to look through discussions, why are you on a forum?

No, I don't. What other site offers tools to root KF? None I'm aware of. If all I want to do is root the device....
Also - a dev posts "hey I've just got X and released it, here's the link", etc. Then I have 40-50 PAGES (not posts) of follow up. Some with problems, some just going "Ata boy!". Are there kernels of wisdom in there? Probably. But to follow through and separate the wheat from the chaff takes a LOT of time.
I've rooted before using KFU. Basically a 5 minute process. Why should I read pages of posts (not all of them even with the original post of the utility, etc.), to find out what I need? Post it in one location. Keep it up to date (things like, "oh, I forgot to upload the correct script, updated now" - updated in the original link in the original post? Updated at the web site shown in the original post? Updated in a following post somewhere?
Many of the "first posts" with links now point to dead download links. One would presume it is because the dev uploaded to something like RapidShare or the erstwhile MegaUpload, and either the link expired, or the dev killed it because there's a newer version. Do I really need to wade through dozens of posts to find the most recent D/L URL?

In this particular case? To get a utility to root a KF. I have no desire to develop on the platform, I've been developing on a great number of platforms for nearly 40 years, and have gotten more into the "I want it to work and use it", rather than "I love the struggle and fight to make something happen". So, I peruse the forum once every 3-4 weeks to see where things are - and without spending 3-4 hours perusing posts, questions, etc. it is not really possible. Sorry, I used to be one of those guys who would sit up for 2-3 days straight pulling things apart, coding in assembler, making "things dance". These days, I simply don't have the time - but would like to enjoy the fruits of a device that might be more open. Or might not. As I said before, I rooted within a week after getting the KF, using KFU. Played with it, and at the time, simply didn't see a point (other than saying "I did it"). So I let it die out. I'd very much like to try out Android 4.x to see if there's anything more - or I just leave it alone.

Having been on forae for many, many years, and having worked with, made my own notes and posts regarding Linux since 1995 or so - sorry (and a great many other topics/forae). I've found in that time that the dev, or those working most closely with the dev are the only ones qualified with enough knowledge of not only what a utility does, but the thought and design behind it. Someone else attempting to step in, will simply "step in it" most of the time.
If the dev doesn't have documentation skills (and most devs don't), I'd encourage the dev to work with someone to help document and write up what their x does. I would presume that the dev has a desire for some praise and accolade for their efforts (otherwise why would they make their work public). By posting a sticky that is up-to-date and current, with correct (or corrected info), they help many others to partake of their works, even if the dev does not have their own web site (and I presume many don't since many don't point to their own website, but post a link to some file sharing service from within a post here).
I wasn't able to use KFU because I got the unsigned driver error and KFU wouldn't run correctly on my PC. But I have heard that it is a very good tool for someone that isn't good with adb.

Also - a dev posts "hey I've just got X and released it, here's the link", etc. Then I have 40-50 PAGES (not posts) of follow up. Some with problems, some just going "Ata boy!". Are there kernels of wisdom in there? Probably. But to follow through and separate the wheat from the chaff takes a LOT of time.
I've rooted before using KFU. Basically a 5 minute process. Why should I read pages of posts (not all of them even with the original post of the utility, etc.), to find out what I need? Post it in one location. Keep it up to date (things like, "oh, I forgot to upload the correct script, updated now" - updated in the original link in the original post? Updated at the web site shown in the original post? Updated in a following post somewhere?
Many of the "first posts" with links now point to dead download links. One would presume it is because the dev uploaded to something like RapidShare or the erstwhile MegaUpload, and either the link expired, or the dev killed it because there's a newer version. Do I really need to wade through dozens of posts to find the most recent D/L URL?
In this particular case? To get a utility to root a KF. I have no desire to develop on the platform, I've been developing on a great number of platforms for nearly 40 years, and have gotten more into the "I want it to work and use it", rather than "I love the struggle and fight to make something happen". So, I peruse the forum once every 3-4 weeks to see where things are - and without spending 3-4 hours perusing posts, questions, etc. it is not really possible. This isn't the place to go looking for a handout this is a place to read, search, read some more, learn to use a tool properly or risk bricking your device, your piss poor "I don't wanna search I just want it given to me" attitude isn't gonna get you far in these forums.Either suck it up and search to find what you want, or don't it's as simple as that. These devs do this for free, in their spare time and are nice enough to share their work with the rest of us. They do have jobs, families and lives outside of this forum and they aren't here to cater to you needing a handout. Plain and simple. If you even bothered to read to forum rules, rule #1 is SEARCH. If you want a handout I'd suggest going to another forum aside from XDA cause this isn't the place for you :-|
