a500 = a501? - Acer Iconia A500

Sorry if that a question that cleared... as a new owner of a501. Can i root and flash a500 Roms? Mms and GPS works for you?

Moscow Desire would probably be the best one to answer this for you, since he has a 501 but...
You can flash a 500 rom, but you will lose all functions related to the phone, since the 500 doesn't have a radio for that there is no need to have those functions in a 500 rom.

The A500 and A501 are in fact identical, save the fact that the A501 has an Ericsson baseband for 3g/4g internet access... Flashing an A500-only ROM will result in a missing driver for that baseband, thus it won't work. Otherwie, the ROMs work just fine, in fact I'm using civato's Flexreaper (which is an A500 ICS ROM) on my A501... and I'm looking for a way to add the missing baseband driver and settings items, too. Didn't get anything yet, though.

I have a a501, have had it a week now and the day after I got it I installed Moscow Desire's Alexander III rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467689
Its a stripped version of the stock rom, everything works including the 3G just as good as the stock version but with root access and no bloatware.
Personally I love it, it works well, and has great battery life. Really I think his rom is the only rom out there specifically for an A501 at the moment.

You can run 500 roms. I do it all the time for testing.
What you will not have;
internal 3g (this covers all functions that use it)
GPS
The 501 kernel is different than the 500's. Mainly because the 501 uses a "nuetered" radio for 3g and gps. The code for these are only available in the 501 kernel. And Acer has so far, never released kernel source for the 501. Probably due to the special ATT and Rogers versions they sold.
I've had success getting it to run on a "certain" 500 HC rom, but with no GPS.

is it possible an other customrom with your kernel to work?
or other, a full ics rom to run on a501?
is it hard to port another rom to support a501 full? or most buildprob.?
edit: the link was impossible...

meinmich, remove that link NOW... Before you get blasted for linking it... It's Thor's kernel which is not GPL compliant and ALL links to his work are not allowed here...
You should know this as you have been here a little while...

1. The kernel I use, is RichardTripps 3.4. It is a Honeycomb kernel.
When you use Overclocked kernel, you have to be careful of voltage to the system board. Too little votage, and you have 3g lock. (tab freezes). Or, the tab will have SOD (sleep of death). It WILL NOT work with ICS.
2. No. The current GPL kernel for ICS, is for a500 only. It does not have the necessary code to make it work on the 501. This includes Thor's kernel. And his Device tree is different from the ICS "leaked" roms. His, is ASOP, so it WILL NOT work with the current ICS release.
3. You cannot port another device kernel. Not easy, as the 501 has the only3g internal. Other kernels, use different hardware drivers which Acer has not released.
Acer, is never going to release the source code for the 501. They are too busy sleeping in bed with ATT and Rogers network. Ain't gonna happen.

However, his ICS rom does have GPS enabled for the A501 after you rename a file.
Still no 3G though....

Yeah, I saw that the other day. Probably guess he also tweaks the kernel as well. Not sure.

Then, by definition, the A501 roms aren't GPL compliant. Acer has to release the kernel no matter what, even if they are special versions.
I would start complaining to Acer to release the kernel source for their stock A501 rom.

At one time, people said that about HTC's source code for devices such as the Hero (both GSM and CDMA) because they were "in bed with the mobile carriers". But, if you pressure them enough, they will release the kernel source (especially since that is GPL'd and they must release the source).

This sounds like a job for reddit...they love having open season on a company for this type of thing. I'll post this thread over there and see if we can get some mass to lean on Acer to get with the program here.

Actually...in looking into this a little more, their kernel source is out there for download for 3.2. It's in the 'Document' section, as opposed to any of the other seemingly more obvious headings that you would think of to find it.
Being that I'm not yet allowed to post external links...
To navigate to it: acer.com > Support > Downloads > Tablet > Iconia Tab > A501 > Document tab

This link is for the A501 kernel source code, click on "user guides" I downloaded it and it does appear to be the 3.2 HC kernel source:
http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=3852
There is also one for the A500 but you have to switch devices and go to the userguide.

Well, this link works. Thanks. Not sure what I can do with it though. Not a kernel dev.
Maybe Drellisdee might be interested in it.

Download the ROM here.
Instead of doing a mega-patch, I've just decided to upload the numerous enhancements and fixes as an entire new ROM.
Kernel sources will be available here - https://github.com/anarchron/Iconia_a500_3.1
Thank you for posting a new rom, though a more detailed guide of what is included/not and some screen shots would be excellent. Thank you.
What is this based on? Stock Asus?
EDIT: But also, thankyou for putting in the effort!
Just wondering, since you didn't mention it in detail in the first post.
Did you include honeyvillain 2.5 kernel?
Stock Xoom 3.2 with modified HoneyVillain kernel.
any chance of some screen shots?
also, what apps are included/excluded?
thank you.
ROM is working very well here, thank you for the effort you've put in.
I decided to be a bit cheeky and see if it would work upgrading from HoneyVillain (3.1 Acer base) without a data wipe, and it worked fine. If I come across any issues though I'll be sure to wipe before complaining.
Downloading......seems very interesting specially the fix of the portrait mode....
Thanks

First feedback - will it work with Richardtrip's stock 2.5 kernel without your modifications? And if not - could you enable overclocking in your kernel? You've got it set to a maximum of 1ghz it seems.
What about 3g support ?

how is the audio laud in this rom..? i like the acer one for the good audio...

It won't work on the stock kernel. I made a mistake earlier and left out the over clocking function. I'm currently rebuilding the kernel and preparing a patch to enable overclocking.
To fully comply with GPL stuff, I will be forking the HoneyVillain kernel source sometime later this week. I have yet to figure out the subtleties of github.

i have one request: can u offer a patch to bring back german language?
Google Account Sign-In
I keep getting a 'Google Account sign-in failure' when I try to set up my gmail account. I've performed a full wipe and initially I flashed the rom and then I immediately flashed the oc patch. On the second attempt I wiped again and just installed the rom and both times I get the same error. Any help would be great!
Disregard that last message, it seems to be working now. Odd...

Best Rom/Kernel Setup to date?

Anyone got a great setup doing really well and willing to share? thanks in advance!
i would read 1 of the many threads asking the exact same question
Stock rooted 3.2?
I like taboonay 2.2 coupled with richard trip's 3.4 kernel, however, it's the only rom I have tried. Trip's 3.7 kernel I had a couple problems I couldn't live with.
Rooted 3.2 with thor's kernel 3.8r3 has been solid for me.
Taboonay 2.2 with Thors kernel v3.4. I haven't bothered updating the kernel to Thors latest as my current setup is running perfectly fine.
Running Thor's 3.6 ROM and his newest Kernel. Most solid for me. I've tried Taboonay, lightspeed, honeyvillan, as well as a few others but I keep going back to Thor. While the others are good too, it just seems to me that Thor's ROM is the best and handling video playback, even without overclocking.
I do not believe there is a BESTrom out there.they all have there own good and unique qualities. Try a few and find what suites you best.
From the many threads I have read it does seem the roms closer to stock will give you the most stability with less issues. But will likely be slower with less blunt and extra settings and software, and having less not needed software pushed by acer.
Good luck choosing.JUST REMEMBER BACKUP BACKUP TO SEVERAL PLACES.
READ 4 TIMES FLASH ONCE.
I agree there is no best, but.....
I run taboonay and and the latest thor kernel.
Currently running Taboonay 2.2 and Thor's Kernel 3.9. Pretty solid and no complaints. Running 1.68 and stable.
Unfortunately I run a 501 so roms are pretty limited. No internal 3g support.
However, I ran Thors Revolver ported for the 500 and was impressed with the display response which was slicker than some of the other roms I've flashed.. Unfortunately we couldn't get the internal 3g working all the way.
For me the roms dont really matter on this device. If i understand it correctly they all come from an acer base rom since theres no hc source. I run civato mix but only because it was the first to support hulufied flash. The kernel is what is important to me and thors is beast. He also has a rom but havent tried it. Tegraowners.com

[Q] Problem with Taboonay 3.0.1

Hey folks,
I am using this [ROM][ICS4.0.3] Taboonay 3.0.1 (28/02/2012)
on my Iconia a501.
Works really great. Fast and smooth... great job.
I know this Rom is based on the a500 Rom.
So my 3g is not working (or should it?)... anyway, is there a way to get it working?
I already installed the test_a501.zip
Thanks for all answers.
Got exactly the same problem. Installed A501 Patch but doesn't seem to have any effect. Is there anything else to do in order to make it work ?
+1
Need update plz
There are 3 things you can do to try and resolve this problem.
A) make Acer release the official update
2) hack into Acers systems and find a leak for a501
C) learn how to code and fix it
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
The current ICS roms only support the a500 at this time. This is most likely kernel related and rom related.
The "fix" zips, were only for testing purposes. If people would read the thread, they would've seen the fix's didn't work. Now you have a somewhat modified kernel on your tab which may or may not give you issues.
Until Acer releases or "leaks" an ICS a501 rom, we are stuck with 3.2.1.
Ok,
First of all, thanks bfranklin for your smashing proposal...
I thought the 3g modem in the asus tab and the modem of Iconia tab are identic and it is possible to use that driver for the a501 for example.
try to take the scripts and drivers form loak 3.0.1 and put in the same folders on your ROM

Gpl compliant ICS kernel?

Can anyone point the way of a Gpl compliant kernel for Ics rom? specifically the AOKP release which apparently uses Thor's broken camera non compliant kernel. I want to replace it with a proper one like Richard Trips or a stock kernel. TIA peeps!

Unfortunately, those folks at ....aokp not only used his kernel, but his whole device tree as well. So in essence, the Acer released kernel for the ICS "leaked" roms, will more than likely not run with it as it's made only for Thor's rom structure.
That explains the HUGE jump in progress from a couple weeks ago. Incidently, they closed down their thread here at xda, so it's a matter of time till it gets closed again
So you may want to go back and EDIT your original post, and remove the link to them. If anybody want's they can just google it.

[Q] Using 3G on my A501 freezes system

Hi,
I am on Taboonay 2.2 Rom (HC 3.2.1) and everytime I use the internal 3G of my A501, the system ends up freezing.
At no particular activity but when accessing Data, android freezes. Only option is to reboot...
Very very annoying.
Any idea where it could come from / possible fix ?
Usually occurs while undervolting too much...
Hmmm, i am on taboona's 2.2 rom with latest thor kernel. I have made no oher changes / tweaks.
Would there be better kernel / specific tweaks for A501s in order to get 3G to work well?
Can you tell me how i go about tweaking voltages? I looked into setCPU but it only talks about reducing CPU votltage...
More help would be greatly appreciated.
Up please help me.

Your version of Taboonay, more than likely uses the 3.7+ Kernel from Richard Trip. Unfortunately, this specific kernel has not enough board voltage to sustain internal 3g. As a result, your display will either Freeze, or tablet will go into Sleep of Death.
Both require a reboot.
The best kernel for your tablet (a501), would be RichardTrips 3.4+. This will allow proper voltage to the system board, while giving a little better battery compared to a Stock Kernel.
You can search the Dev thread for the post by RichardTrip, containing links to his HC kernels. I believe he already has them in a flash.zip file for CWM. Just wipe Dalvik and flash through CWM or RA Recovery.
Any questions, post back.
Thanks man, you solved it!
Looking forward to getting my hands on a performing and stable ICS rom for A501 with working 3G... Meanwhile I am happy with what I have.

Yes, Taboonay has been around for awhile. In fact it was the first Rom I installed. But as you discovered, when it went to the newer kernel, is when the issues with the 501 started.
Not a lot of kernel Devs, and only for the 500. Although 501 can use them for the most part, the UV is too much for the 3g. A pity at least one kernel Dev would own a 501 but they all own 500's.
I've got a stable ICS. But, the battery life isn't the best. Nothing can do till the next beta release for the 501. Also, I will not support HC Bootloaders, so folks will have to upgrade to an ICS bootloader. Not going to get into the mess of supporting different roms/kernels/bootloaders.
