Going back to cm7 - Epic 4G General

Just want to know what kernel is best for nightly 45, I was using earthbounds stuff, but he is no more, recommendations from those who stuck with it...
Thanks

Don't oc or uv and buy voodoo payed. If you do want to screw up your phone with oc, earthbound has his own site for his kernels. Don't post on the cm thread if running a custom kernel.

I can never understand if you like earthbounds work or hate it with these comments .
To the OP there is no best kernel...never has been never will be its all personal prefrence.. i run earthbound but that means nothing. IF you want his kernel go to his site IAP Forum
And post your bug reports there as well DO NOT post in the CM thread if your running his kernel.

Yep, found his site and seeing as his newest is a few days older then n45 it will probably work fine... I rarely overclock, but I do undervolt because it helps with battery life... Never posted in the cm thread before, mainly because I don't like to get my head chewed off, and usually because I read the thread to know if it is my issue or a general issue. Seeing as how I posted this here, instead of the CM thread, I think that would stand to reason...

Earthbound's likes to eat my battery and the voodoo settings look washed out. I prefer shadow after extended testing. I like Earthbound's memory management better.

hes working on it for voodoo color settings on MIUI and he just posted his latest release for MIUI v4 yesterday. so ask about ti over there

first off.. for the longest time i stuck to stock CM7/CM9 colonels just because.. thats how i roll
but on my last switch back to CM7 i decided to try a custom one, mainly for UV, my phone handles it pretty well and i enjoy seeing how long I can make the stock battery go.
AFAIK, the only custom kernel for Nightly 45 is this one KernelSanders... use with Voltage Control and go for it...
I also disabled the 900 mhz step, so its 100,200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 with the SmartassV2 governer and vr I/O (never heard of that one, but its what the kernel comes set at so i left it)
UV'd at
100 -100
200 -100
400 -75
600 -75
800 -75
1000 -75
seems just as stable as stock, voodoo color is meh.. and im UVed so im happy

I think it may be that all white screen eatting your battery

Umm EB's kernel also works on CM7 Nightly, has a CM9 Version for A5, has a version for MIUI and MIUI v4. just not on this site because of blah blah blah but he has site now and its up over there.
And Voodoo Color is being worked on for MIUI to look not washed out

Ya his latest works awesome on n45

1.6 GHz Overclock

Team Whiskey has been successful in overclocking the T-Mobile Vibrant to 1.6 GHz, according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8844947&postcount=41
Pretty incredible stuff. They're working on incorporating voodoo into this kernel right now, then they'll release it.
It sounds too good to be true.
omg!
(yeah, that's about all I have to say)
I believe I read somewhere that they were gonna do a captivate specific ROM via bionix. Pretty sure it is for 2.1, linpack is @12 MFLOPS and open GL site shows it on 2.1.-impressive? Yes . Can't say that I wouldnt take it for a spin though. Hopefully 2.2 will soon follow

Man I've been wanting to push this badboy past 1.2 ghz
Stable and tentative... Could see 1800! I was just thinking today (with the droid oc and all) when another one would come our way. I guess it was just a matter of time. And boy did it ever come!! Great thing is there is already plans to bring it our way

if you read the current setup required for that 3k+ quadrant score, he said he was running OCLF, so drop between 500-700 points just for that to get a more realistic voodoo score. it's impressive, don't get me wrong, but it isn't as astounding because a lot of that score is still from OCLF (hell you can get 2500 with 1.2GHz and OCLF)...
as for a *STABLE* 1.6 GHz OC, I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah my phone doesn't run well with a simple 1.2 GHz OC... so I'm skeptical of a stable 1.6 OC kernel.
Quadrant is just terrible. Any comparison scores should be taken using Advanced with the I/O test subtracted. But, even then, it only scores Qualcomm MSM processors "correctly."

It also gets 78fps in neocore versus ~55fps stock and it removes the fps cap. Issues with 1.2ghz seem to be due to undervolting rather than overclocking to 1.2ghz. In my experience it has worked fine at 1.2ghz without undervolt.

yes, but I never questioned the FPS cap, I have no idea what affects that so I can't question it. besides, it's not like our eyes can see much more than 30 FPS, so the difference between 60 FPS and 78 FPS means little to me (in day to day usage). also, I never said anything about undervolting either or made a comment about the 1.2 GHz overclock. Mine runs fine with a 1.2 GHz overclock and the hummingbird processor has already been theorized to be stable up to 1.6 GHz, so this isn't really news, just the first time someone is advertising it as fully implemented. and, what stable means, is it runs across all the devices without things like the "sleep of death" effect occuring (which still happened for SOME with the 1.2 GHz OC).
so until I can personally see 1.6 GHz on my phone without any ill effects on battery life (which should only be minimal if the CPU is being scaled dynamically) or sleep death effects, I won't make a judgment... which is what I already said
This is awesome though! Woot woot!
Who needs a Galaxy S 2 with this?
2GHZ OC here we come!
Will hopefully find out soon a dl link for the vibrant ROM is in new thread "Manhattan project." Viral black posted that they have a Captivate but will try to port to every sgs variant possible. Captivate will be 2nd I would suppose. Sombionix did say they were working on a 2.2 ROM, so hopefully this will meet froyo in the not so distant future. It seemed to be working well from the posts that I read. Then again it is still early.

Features:
Massive+stable 1400 MHz Overclock (tested on several phones and found to be stable if you don't use SetCPU or any other CPU frequency setter)
Voodoo Sound v4 (v5 coming soon)
A cool boot screen
A cool name
Gingerbread-ful
Built with codesourcery's ARM-EABI 2010.09 Toolchain for more optimizations than the stock CM7 kernel
Kernel HZ set to 1000 for buttery-smoothnessitude
How to use it: Flash it through ClockworkMod recovery like you would any other ROM. After you've booted, get SetCPU here and then open it, switch your governor to conservative, and then set your min frequency to 100MHz.
Oh! Did I mention its fully opensource?! https://github.com/ytt3r/android_kernel_samsung has the stuff
Please report any issues you have with the kernel here

Warning: The second you click the download link here (or here for the 256 HZ version you release me of any and all liability of emotional, physical, or metaphysical damage that this kernel may do to you or your phone, even though it was thoroughly tested.

Changed kernel HZ to 1000 for buttery-smoothness and not much increased battery drain. Not like you'd worry about that on an overclocked kernel, right?
Compiled with Codesourcery's ARM-EABI 2010.09 Toolchain for more buttery-smoothness. How much more can it take?!
Looking forward to see where this goes!
Edit: I can only assume this is I9000 based bc all of the ROMS myself and others build are also I9000 based. Is that an appropriate assumption?

just wondering if it was necessary to disable to make work
So this is oc to 1400 and can not be adjusted using voltage control, just run with it
CM7
Sounds about right!
How does battery life with this kernel compare to the battery life of stock cm7 nightlies, or the battery life with TheEscapists OC-UV kernel?
So I'm a little curious.. how would you set what OC you want? Would you just set it to 1.3 or 1.4Ghz and not mess with UV settings at all?

You can set the CPU governor in SetCPU, as long as you don't set the frequencies.
In answer to your question, it defaults to ondemand. (So it varies based on how much power you need.)

EDIT: Voodoo Sound doesnt work, and it seems pretty choppy right now at 1.2 OC with MIUI
EDIT 2: OC'ed at 1.4 its flies. But 1.3 it was still choppy. Odd.
And just a request you think you could try Kanging voodoo color from the Escapist's kernel?
For some reason everything is choppy after a boot but before you turn the screen off and on. Also, voodoo sound is 100% there, have you run the app?

ya I have never run my phone at 1.4 but thats the only thing that makes MIUI not really choppy.
But it really has payed off its 100% stable for me and the fastest my phones ever been. Getting about 19.5-20 in Linpack, and just overall the phone flies.

In need a few EH17 testers for OC/UV GB kernel (Status: CLOSED)

EDIT: I think I have enough testers now. I'll take a few stragglers for a little bit but the testing window is now closed. I will leave the thread open until tomorrow so the testers can leave me notes on their experience (apart from what they shared on irc). Thank you for all who showed up to test! Stay tuned for another round of testing soon!
Most of you are familiar with my Genocide kernel for Froyo. For the next couple of hours I need a handful of testers for a 1.4ghz kernel compiled from Gingerbread source. My personal testing seems to be pretty positive so I need some other people to beat on the kernel for a little while.
So far the kernel has support for the following:
eh17 only (cm7 kernel available but I would prefer eh17 users)
overlock and undervolt support (100mhz, 200mhz, 400mhz, 600mhz, 800mhz, 1.0ghz, 1.1ghz, 1.2ghz, 1.3ghz, 1.4ghz)
rfs & ext4 support
bootanimation.zip/sanim.zip support
init.d/ support
keytimer patches
latest su and superuser.apk (installed automatically if not already installed)
initramfs from chris41g's eh17plus kernel (slightly modified)
and a few more tweaks
Please don't ask to test if you don't really know or feel comfortable using experimental stuff. I try to test everything thoroughly that I put out but I am still not responsible if something really bad happens. I will how ever help any way I can to get you back going. It is important that you make a CWM backup before you flash the experimental kernel. My main focus right now is the overclocking and undervolting stability but everything needs to be tested more.
If you would like to test find me on irc for the next few hours. Please stay in the channel and give feedback of what works and doesn't work. Join in and give it hell!

i can compile a cm7 version to test the overclock stuff but i was holding off on that to make sure we had no weird bugs introduced by cm7
I would die to test the CM7 kernel, but I have an EH17 Nand on standby shout out for Rodderik my Hero

eh17 kernel supports ext4 so yeah it should be fine...just do a cwm backup first just in case
I will test out a cm7 version. I am always in to test.
Engage slippyfist!!
If you need someone else to test on Hurricane ROM 1.6 let me know. I test software for a living

i'd like to keep the links on irc...you can use andchat from the market and connect to irc.irondust.net and join the channel #devphone
ok so i can keep all the testers that are still around straight, please answer these few questions for me when you finish testing. i'll leave this thread open until tomorrow.
1. which kernel did you test? (eh17/cm7)
2. what rom and version are you using?
3. tell me a detailed story about your overclocking experience. (what works, what didn't work, what you did or didn't do, were you able to go higher on froyo stable, etc)
4. did you find anything else that didn't work as expected?
5. any other comments/suggestions/moans/complaints?
Freezes above 122 for me on CM7
Also noticed I was plugged in to USB and the battery was decreasing and not charging
I'm running this on cm7.1 the latest build.
This appears 100% stable even at 1.4ghz (I always bump core voltage up to 1400 and internal to 1150 though from previous experience.
the hardware keyboard misses nothing *keyboard sweep time* qwertyuiop asdfghjkl zxcvbnm
I have no complaints at all. Just looking forward to cm7 having ext4 support.

Why does a stock Epic 4G on Gingerbread..

Using official EI22 getting Quadrant scores of 1700+ while other Galaxy S phones on official Gingerbread aren't getting as high?

Is this in the development section child?
If you have nothing productive to say/write, then don't say it.
In a way, it does have something to do with development because Verizon chooses to use touchwiz vanilla 3.0 on their gingerbread leaks as opposed to a touchwiz 4.0 esque battery meter style.
Stop trolling

LOL I had read what you said originally, but it's ok.
That said, my bad if I had posted it in the development section, meant to post it here. Really 2200 stock EH03 gingerbread? that is with no mods right? like no voodoo lag fix or anything, impressive.....

Yes no mods...with voodoo kernel oc to 1200 folks are seeing 2600+ quadrant. The new vzw eh03 gingerbread release seems to be a winner. Heck the best quadrant I have seen on cm7.1 with glitch kernel oc to 1400mhz was 3016.

dude dang what did they do, I knew this Galaxy S phones were killer phones at the time (hence the reason I got one despite Samsung's Bad Reputation for supporting phones)....That's ridiculous.
Did they finally convert from RFS to EXT4?????? They really did it right this time, because finally Bing is no longer the default search engine. Heck these single-core phones are more powerful than some dual-core phones offered from HTC, LG and Motorola. Hummingbird for the win.
I guess I'll stay Samsung all the way even when I replace this phone. They seem to always have the best hardware.

Thats awsome...best I have seen is 3016. Im suprised how well stock gingerbread scores. Hell the eh09/ei20 ported roms were only scoring like 1100 stock. Anyways I wasnt posting like 3000 was good for mtd, just comparing how close eh03 was to my glitch'd cm7 setup.

That is like higher than Galaxy S II ratings, no wonder why people hate Quadrant for benchmarking. That is just ridiculous.
