I needed to unroot my evo because I want to get a new one because of bad reboot issues. I followed the 2 step guide here on xda. I didn't use unrevoked forever so I just flashed the PC36IMG. After it updated I got this : error code 67 .Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.
Then I used the 4.70 RUU, still the same problem.
I need to fix this soon, I want my new evo.
Thanks in advance.
what method did you use to root the phone originally?

turn phone off and then hold vol down and power to boot into hboot... at the top if it still says s-off then you are still rooted but using a non rooted rom
what i would do (and did do wednesday night) is root with unrevoked and then follow the same guide to unroot but use the unrevoked son part of the guide
i had to use unrevoked twice before it rooted so dont just give up after it says root failed

Wow. Defensive & combative much? All that meant is give it a day and see if it works itself out. Every time I've seen that (2-3 times) it goes away on its own.
Since you "fixed" it why not share the steps you took to do so?
Error 67 is an error I get frequently in Sprint customer care. My observation so far has been data connection related.

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

You will need a computer but if you remember setting up your gingerbread update it asks if you want to back up your device on google..... Use ruu to go back root and flash a rom like cm7 and you can restore your device or you can use titanium backup to... Well... Back up and restore your apps. Also google as you know backs up your contacts. So you should be set.... Anyone else let me know if there is something i missed.

The RUU can be found in the Evo Shift wiki by going to the following URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy
Luckily the RUU pretty much walks you through the process itself. You'll need the HTC sync drivers if I remember correctly in order for it to find your phone. You should be all good. Good luck, dood

Followup to this msg: We have enough volunteers. I just need to work thru some issues with jcase before we start testing. Please be patient.
Good news everyone...
About 8 days ago I rooted my TB -without-losing-ANYTHING-.
I'd like to get a few volunteers to try the procedure before I make it public...
Anyone with an UN-rooted phone who's willing to be a guinea pig, please PM me. Ideal volunteers would be moderately tech-savvy and not have anything on their phone that would be catastrophic if it were lost.
You'd also be a good candidate to help getting this procedure worked out if you just want to root your phone and don't care if you lose anything...
If you're wondering why I don't just post it, I had several false starts (kept getting interrupted because I didn't allow enough time) and then didn't take detailed notes on the final run where I managed to finish it. I want the instructions to be fairly solid before I throw anyone with critical phone data into the procedure.
I hope you understand and will be patient while I get this properly documented...

No offense to the OP but once you flash another rom you WILL have to wipe...
Now if its a one click type of root then that's a breakthrough

I see the value in this. Some people may just wanna root their TB but not want to install custom ROM. Or they may want to root to see what they can do with a rooted phone.

I'm in that boat.. I want root, but not really interested in other ROMs at this time. I went down that road wit hmy X and my Xoom, and its a pain, especially wit hthe Xoom and the move from 3.01 to 3.1 and now 3.2.
I guess one main question is if you root the TB, does it hack the hotspot as well, or would i still need to go get Wireless Tether?
jwb
This would be extremely useful...don't listen to the naysayers.
For those of us who waited to root a week, two, or even a month or two after getting the phone, there was no way to make a solid backup of apps, settings, etc. since most of the better methods require root. So many things had to be wiped clean completely. With a no-wipe root, whether you move onto ROMs or not, you have the opportunity to take a nandroid, use Titanium Backup, etc.
I can't donate my time or phone since I'm busy at work and need a strong daily driver, but I wish you luck.
I just rooted my phone yesterday. I would have liked to try it out and be part of the breathrough.

Sorry... Unfortunately, it's not any easier. It's an add-on to jcase's root method so it still uses adb. It actually takes about 3 times as much time as his, but most of that time is waiting for backup and restore operations to complete.
Very glad to hear development is still ongoing for root! I like this! I hope it works out well. I'd volunteer but I'm past that point. I ran my dInc stock rooted for a pretty long time before trying a custom ROM. This makes a lot of sense to me.
I'll be watching this. My wife won't let me root her TB because she doesn't want to redo her settings.

I advise against using this backup method, taking a DD of /data while its r/w can lead to corruption.
A better idea would be to push su (aka a temp root) into your path and use something like titanium backup to backup you data.
Hello, yes, first post!
I am trying to root HTC Mytouch 4G.
I have adb and fastboot and am working through Mac OS terminal. That has worked great!
I was using this guide for gfree tem root and gfree perm root. http://simply-android.com/discussion/960/guide-how-to-permroot-g2-with-g-free-safest-method/p1 - originally starting here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228, but wanting to use Gfree instead of vision for the permanent root part.
I pushed all the Gfree temp files to the sd card (su, superuser.apk etc) and ran the Terminal Emulator prompts to attain temporary root. I got the desired "forked #### childs" message - but when I reset term, the terminal just went to a blank terminal window - the guide says that Terminal will exit. Finally, after I pressed some keys it force closed. After that I could not re open Terminal Emulator at all. The system also seemed bogged down at this point, everything was lagging until I rebooted. Obviously I was unable to continue with the Gfree perm prompts - never having gotten a root prompt in Terminal Emulator, as I could not get it to reopen.
I retried this after several reboots (maybe 10 times). I always got through the "rage" prompts just fine to the "forked #### childs" message.
I hope that someone may know what is wrong with Terminal Emulator or why it would not reset and give me the root "#"prompt to continue with permanent root.
Thanks in advance - trying to get 10 posts to ask the actual developer - but even then the thread is 3 years old.

Second, I understood that you could root the my4g with the g2 instructions.
Finally, I could not try VISIONary because the link does not have a file anylonger.

The visionary method works of you just typed visionary.apk into Google you would get it........but if you have a bad emmc when it reaches the part to get s off root.sh won't work if u follow the guide on the unlockr.com u will be ok. You would just need to get visionary from else where and when it reaches the part to get permroot and u have to use the terminal instead of the instructions in the guud go down to the comments and get the file that the guy said worked for him and follow those instructions and u will get s off at which point you may go back to the unlocked to continue to get a custom recovery and ROM.............if your phone starts behaving strange beware the bad emmc chips and take precautions right away

I guess I just want to mod so the annoying limitations are gone.

Agreed. I too have this bad chip, and I have flashed several roms, kernels, and radios without a problem.
Please be advised, OP, you MUST downgrade to Froyo then root using the G-FREE. You are having the EXACT same problems I had when I first tried it a long time ago. Nothing else works, period. Trust me on this. It will save you hours of aggravation.

Awesome, I appreciate it. I haven't addressed this because I've been playing with my phone and lost the ich to work on it. This is my wife's 4G and the more I use it the more I think it is a great phone -size, sleekness, screen and speed are all really nice. Too bad they don't start allowing people to add RAM to phones. (Unless it is possible and I just don't know it) That could keep older "cult" phones in play longer, much like Custom roms, but from a hardware standpoint. Anyway...
Ps - what roms have you had three best experience with for the mytouch?
