4G Usb modem on Iconia - Acer Iconia A500

Hello!
I am looking at getting a usb modem for my Iconia and wondering if the one below would work?
I looked around but I can't find anything on it.
Novatel Wireless U679 Turbo Stick (can't attach a link)
Thanks in advance!

i've been loking for that too

I'm not sure about stock, but a few rom developers have thier roms support 3g dongles, so I'm not sure if the 4g would make a difference since the signal is picked up by the dongle and not the tablet itself. I would do some research on some usb dongles for whatever rom you are running/stock rom. Chances are if a similar 3g one works, there is a decent chance the 4g one will also work.

Does A500 support 3G connection?

I bought my a500 in Bangkok. I've heard lots of reports saying that this device doesn't support 3g and it was marked "32g wifi" when I bought it, so I naturally assume it doesn't support 3g connection. However, I find out that the sim card slot does exist besides the micro SD slot, it's just covered by the warranty label.
Does this mean that a500 actually supports 3g connection? If yes, anybody knows how to activate it? I didn't find any option in setting to turn data service on.
A500 with 3g will be the coolest device!
unfortunately according to what i read on the web this model does not support 3G nor does the USB host support a 3G modem;
there is a new model coming out though that does have 3G enabled.
It's pretty clear on the box, manual and specs - WiFi.
USB wimax modem?
Does it support usb Wimax modems?
AFAIK, it does not natively support USB modems.

Don't try to insert a sim card in the slot. Reviews have pointed out that the in the wifi only version the 3g sim slot has NO workings, it's just a big hole down which your sim will vanish, never to be seen again, in addition to this, it will rattle around behind the screen, possibly messing up the internals.
!!!!!!!RESIST THE URGE!!!!!!!
it's impossible that the A500 support 3G natively because the HARDWARE is not here... if you open the device you will see that the
- card reader is missing
- the pcie 3G card is missing
- the pcie slot is missing
- the microchips and resistor are missing
For all the 3G system.
A501 will be the 3G version
A500 is wifi only
32G = 32 GigaBytes and not somehow 3G/2G
zhengyu. where and when did you bought it ?
Mobile Expo or Commart ?
The W500 support 3G modem since it's a windows system.
and the N500 at pantip I really doesn't know what that model does maybe it's the name we give for the 16G version
555, su su.
you can use a phone and tether by wifi or buy a mifi-30 from iFox I think you can got one on 4th floor at pantip plaza
could you maybe explain how to open the device? i would like to have a look at the ssd and if i can replace it with a bigger one or with a hdd...

sanaell, could you link the device you mentioned for 3g via usb please... I assume this would be to tether to 3g phone???
Also is there anyway to tether via bluetooth that you are aware of. I would like to tether to my bberry curve 3g when I have no wifi available...
thanks,

The internal storage isn't an SSD, it's flash modules soldered directly to the motherboard, so no user upgrade on the internal storage. Well, theoretically you could possibly upgrade the flash modules themselves, if you're really REALLY careful and have access to that kind of hardware
Thankfully, since you bought the Acer, you have a full-sized USB2.0 host port on the tablet itself, so you can plug in a nice multi-terabyte external HDD if you really need that much storage. May need to check out this link in the Dev section if you want to plug in an NTFS-formatted USB drive though.
Thanks !!
When I plugged in my cell phone, I see a /dev/ttyACM0 device show up. PPP seems to be also present on the system along with 'chat'. These are the pieces that enable a cell modem connection. So I think eventually someone will be able to tether to their phone or USB modem.
alright, according to varius posts, this "slot" propably is only a black hole
I will not try to insert a sim card any more
Pity on the pad, hope that Acer will have an upgrade plan
all the 3G talk should be close to solved this way.. read this post, and you can use huawei dongle's for 3G now.. it works fine here.. and is fast!
ZTE MF668a
I'm working with Thor rom v14.2 and 3g path.
Folowing the instructions for connecting the modem, finaly I get
- phone coverage in the icon of the task bar,
- I can acces APN's in settings, register my conection with the provider ...
- and the ligths of the modem are OK (blue indicating 3g coverage)
But when I run in terminal ppp-start.sh the messages are:
# su
# ppp-start.sh
inserting modules
insmod: can't open 'system/lib/modules/usb_wwan.ko'
insmod: init_module 'system/lib/modules/option.ko' failed (File exists)
starting pppd
but nothing happes with the connection
I've search for the modules and usb_wwan is not there but option.ko is in the correct place.
Is the modem the problem?
Have I to edit the 3g file?
I think the error is before of 3g file is launched.
Thanks a lot for all the good work eveybody is doing.
I confirm, A500 working like a charm with 3G USB dongle.
I use Taboonay ROM with huawei 3G stick and it's perfect !!!

[Q] UMTS / 3G Modem Support

Hi,
is there a way to get an USB UMTS modem working on the Transformer?
I only found this thread about the Toshiba Folio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914350
I'm wondering, if this is also possible for the Transformer.
Did you try already or are you asking?
WIth a Clearwire Clear Spot I had no problem connecting any transformer (stock, stock rooted and Prime)
I have also connected to my T-MO MT4G (Cyanogen) without any special action. This was after I had Prime installed.
Maybe this will help you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093778

Has anyone got their 3g dongle working ?

Hi Has anyone got their 3G internet dongle working yet?
I have a bell canada 3g dongle (novatel) I would like to use.
I looked in dev and found something with modules but I had no luck
I'm using a MiFi and it works flawless... the model is a ZTE MF30, bought in Spain. I don't know if it'll be available in your country... it can work plugged by USB or in WiFi mode for up to 5 devices at the same time...
Cheers

How did you get the USB connection to work on MiFi? I didn't think the A500 had that capability yet.

(Q) 3G USB Stick for mobile internet to Acer Iconia A500 - Can it work?

Hi guys,
I have an Acer Iconia A500, the GPS version, no 3G on board.
I have a 3G usb stick for mobile Internet and I wanted to ask if I can make my Iconia work with it, so I can have access to the Internet where no WiFi spots are availiable.
Do I have to root my device? I heard that my tablet have the same hardware with the 3G version (A501) but in mine this feature is disabled. Is it true?
Many thanks for the answers you will provide me
Sent from Iconia A500

i have exactly the same question as above
Maybe you could have searched for it, but there has been written a lot about this:

usb mobile internet
OK so maybe this is a nubie question but I have a Acer inconia A500 tablet and I was wondering if anyone would possibly know if I could link my clear4G mobile USB device to it? Need some help or maybe a little direction please thank you.
i suggest you to instal thor2002ro custom rom
(the same person who made the 3g patch)
it has so many features more than others and 3g works great
even if you dont care about camera you can use his ICS port for a500
but dont forget to read the manual to install roms on a500
you can find them in tegraowners.com
There are lots of patches available for USB modems. I would suggest getting your name and model, and try some of them. Usually the 500 "modders" state which modems the patch supports.

[Q] PPP2 Widget on Yureka

I need to use the PPP2 Widget to connect my device to a usb modem, and want to know if it is functional on the Yu Yureka.
Can you please tell me if it works with the CM on the device? Based on this I plan to purchase the Yureka.
Thank you
Yureka has always been a good choice for ₹ you pay. PPP widget is so unreliable solution for what it does. Since these days WiFi enabled USB modems are available at insignificant hike to NOn-WiFi enabled ones, you can upgrade them and enjoy wireless freedom. Just before some hour 1st CM nightly based on 5.1 lollipop was made available and am yet to try. Good luck...

Thanks for your suggestion. I am sensitive to wifi and 3G radiation, so my thought is to use a usb modem on a long active extension usb cable. That will keep the modem at a distance. So the wifi enabled usb modem isn't an option.
Would you know if ppp2 actually works on Yureka? If anyone could download the widget on the yureka and give me feedback that would be very helpful, before I hunt for the device
If you could suggest any other options that would be great. An old wifi only tablet with a usb modem? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Babak
(Make use of Thanks button, which would help everyone than replying it...)
Radiation problem should be ignored in this modern world. Although I have Rooted Yureka, I don't have any USB modems as those are historic now. And also I'm very unsure of Reliable connection even if it works. Since Yureka has dual SIMs, you should just have another secondary Data SIM and use it...
