Hi folks,
my galaxy note really heats up when I streaming video over cellular network. The screen and the back portion if the phone becomes really hot.
is anybody is facing same issues?

are your phone while doing so, that can cause overheating
My note has some overheating issues as well. It can get quite warm over the camera (where I assume the processor lies), but I haven't been too worried about it. I attribute this to the extremely thin piece of plastic, AKA the back cover.

The more I use it the more I feel the material was chosen on purpose, to keep the device slim (of course) but because its so damn thin it dissipates heat much better.
p.s. Also to note the spot directly opposite the "patch-below-the-camera-where-it-gets-hot" on the screen also gets hot.
I thought it was thw custom rom/kernel i was running that caused this issue.
now i am back to full stock but its the same. gets hot around the camera area.

i had the same problem before, because of AbyssNote kernel. Changed to Franco kernel, all good now!
In general samsung phones like the s2 and note tend to heat up quicker due to their dual cores and relatively slimmer profile.
i do not really have this problem though.. or i have not used my note long enough?
after how long you feel the heat?

I have tried just about every kernel/ROM combination and have yet to find one that reduces the heat around the camera area (and on the corresponding screen side as noted earlier)
HD games send it up around 48C (it's warm here in Brisbane - around 32C so I'm not sure +16 is a worry?) I have to admit the first few times I flashed ROMs and had big temperature issues I thought it was me. Since then I always flash then leave the screen off and charge to 100%. Temperature is always good after that.
Hey guys - we have a "phone" that is really a dual-core mini -laptop ! It is incredibly versatile, and now that I am used to it heating up after some CPU intensive tasks, I am able to feel more comfortable with the heat from the "Beast"! It always cools down after the screen is off for a while.

haha ok let me try! i seldom play HD games tho.
Here in Malaysia, It's quite hot.
The coolest I can get is 30C - 33C.
If I'm surfing the web with multiples tab (using Boat) or tethering, it can go up to 51C.
Is it normal guys?
(guys from Malaysia - how hot did you get?
when surfing with 3g on...like 38-40....
when idling coolest i get 28-31...
if on 3d game..about 40-45...
but it get cool pretty quick..no big deal...
for me..i keep switching kernel and see whats the best..my combo CR+abyss kernel 4.2...
p/s-me also from malaysia
i've owned many android phones and samsung cpu's (exynous and previous gen) tend to run warmer then their competitors (snapdragon cpus, tegra).
my note gets a little warm when gaming and hot on certain kernels. my note is one of the few Notes that can not handle an overclock past 1.4 so it gets warm pretty quickly but only when doing tasks on the phone which put a damper on the system resources, e.g. heavy gaming.

I'm using LB1 deodexed with speedmod k1-5, temperature usually at 25degC in aircon room and around 27degC outside. It gets heat up either when using high CPU usage apps or accessing wireless network. Tried franco #6 but it is roughly the same.
Have faced some issues when using the note as wifi hotspot. Maximum temp reached is 50degrees & the phone is in good hot state!
It is best to stick to stable rom/kernel combinations.
Am using Cassies V8 with CF-LA6 kernel.
Have been using following combinations
RR V22 - abyss stock / franco v2
LB1 deodexed - cf kernel / franco v2.
Many have the opinion that franco V2 is the most stable.
Also, since speedmod development is currently on hold, the best seems to be the base version.

Ok I aint joking but seriously what is the point of overclocking a Desire z/G2. Unless I am running on a slow phone I don't see the point. Stock speed never lags and i haven't seen any difference between 1.5 ghz vs 800mhz.
The only time when 1.5ghz clock speed is useful is when i running quadrant and rubbing its scores infront of my friends face.
There is any areas where you can actually see the performance difference?
bluntly, if you dont see the point of it then you don't need it.
For others, sometimes you run alot of stuff in the background and still want to be able to have your main app perform at its best level.
There is also the minute tweaking of speed and snappiness of the interface. The idea of instant reaction when you open your message app, or your email, or anything.

Ya i know what overclocking is but I haven't found one instances where I needed it to run an app. G2 is already damn fast and it runs android with no lag but I really see no point until more demanding ver. of android come out.
I just wanted to see who overclocks their G2 everyday and for what purpose.

Fair question IMHO.
I don't see the difference when overclocking, or rather I don't feel it. Software does make a difference, but not the extra 200-500Mhz. I do feel however the battery drain
It always makes me laugh when somebody asks a legitimate question and you get silly responses like the above 2. It's as if these people feel threatened and have to justify that they are more knowledgeable than the op. The facts of the matter are most of the tweaks, mods and alterations are wholly unnecessary in the real world.
If you don't feel like it makes it better then you don't have to use it. I use it because I feel it makes everything just a little snappier and more instant. If you don't notice a difference that's fine. It's probably trivial for me to notice the little hang ups but I can't help it.

For me there's several reasons. For the most part, the reason for oc is because you can. But there are practical reasons as well. For example, with the stock ROM running at 800MHz, you're stuck with that. With an oc kernel and using SetCPU or built in clock settings in CM, you can adjust it as needed. Gonna play a game? Bump it up to 1GHz or so. Done with said game? Take it back down to 800MHz. But it's not all about oc. Sometimes there's a need to underclock. Getting low on battery and don't have a charger near by and need to squeeze another hour or two out of it? Maybe take it down to 768MHz or 600MHz (if you're running Pershoot's kernel).
Dungeon Defender:
800 mHz : not fun, laggy
1.5 gHz : fun, graphic are more smooth
Reasons for using over clocking:
Because I can
Because sometimes I do notice the difference in performance of the UI and some applications (wait for Sense 3.0 etc...)
Because I also use it to underclock.
Like everything else, a lot of it is perception. My wife cannot see any difference between our normal cable channels and the HD ones. I can (or am I just trying to convince myself that I can?). Oh well.
Finally some practical and helpful responses, showing an understanding of the need for information from some people.
here's my experience when it comes to overclocking. keep in mind that, like with your computer, it does vary from user to user... so I'm making these statements from MY experience, not making blanket statements regarding all of our devices:
- if you run multiple homescreens with multiple widgets and ui "smoothness," not just aesthetically, but performance-wise as well, is of concern, mild overclocking becomes necessary.
- if you have several apps running at any given time (in background or foreground) and ui smoothness, same definition as above, is of concern, mild overclocking becomes necessary.
- if you run any iteration of a sense rom in any configuration and ui smoothness is of concern, mild overclocking becomes necessary.
- if you run PSX/N64 emulators and you don't want audio distortion or general lagginess, more aggressive (in my case, 1209 is a safe speed for maximizing performance without having a drastic effect on battery life) overclocking becomes necessary.
on AOSP builds, especially gingerbread-based, I don't think there is a necessity for more processing power than what we get from the factory if you're running a relatively slim setup and aren't using something like a PSX/N64 emulator regularly.
I run mine at 1ghz, but I did use 1.2ghz before. I do notice a slight performance difference. Overall tho I don't notice it much. I notice it more when I'm doing multiple things.
Nonsense!

I run 1.1 because it is noticably faster. Everything opens faster and works smoother. My wife has a stock G2 and when I grab it to look something up on the web or to use maps when we're out, I instantly notice how mucher slower hers is.
Works for me so I use it.
I notice a definite performance boost on mine, but it also depends on which kernel/ROM you use. I was running meXroid for a few days and found that it got extremely laggy even overclocked with Flippy's kernel built in (1.9Ghz), plus my battery was dying faster than a Chuck Norris joke. PyroMod has always been reliable for me and I flashed back to 2.0 earlier and it's just as reliable and power-saving as ever.

Yes, it is... I also found out from Angelom (creator of abyss kernel) that default standard voltage from note is a bit on the high side.
Since you have tried different kernels, i assume you are rooted. And if yes, you can use setcpu from the market and tweaked the voltage down . That was advised by user Angelom and Robertberma and until now, i don't have anymore heating problem
@ LordManhattan , Not hot but Warm.. when you leave the device in sleep and touch it you can see how cold/normal it is, and once you start using it slowly the heat will spread and yes 3d intense games make it worsen, watching flash videos through browser and stuffs like that... surprised it overheats only when you charge and play.. for me it heats up when i am not charging also..
@ bluelavender.. can you gimme a screenshot of your setup.. i do have setcpu.. but don't want to mangle with voltages without knowing much... and currently i have 2.6 angelom kernel and rocketrom v13
Haha, don't worry, it's perfectly normal.
Reasons for the heat is due to the Amoled screen. When being used for long periods it tends to get toasty...
Expecially when gaming or web browsing it gets hot...

I can't believe how much misinformation there is on this forum!
It's nothing to do with the AMOLED screen, it's the SoC. The CPU, by default, uses extraordinarily high voltages for 1.2 and 1.4ghz which can easily be toned down by 100mv and this makes a huge difference. Download Tegrak OC (on a stock kernel) or SetCPU on a custom kernel to change these settings.
Mine doesnt even go warm unless I charge and play.. this is probably the same issue with the S2 in where some units run a lot cooler than others. Just like desktop processors.

Of course it's down to the screen. As you mentioned it's also down to the cpu but screens cause heat, any screen does.
Every screen/monitor I've owned at home give out heat...
Do a simple test, play Angry Birds or any other game for a few minutes.
Then put the screen over your cheek and feel the HEAT coming from the screen.

Ehm, no. It is not the screen that is the source. It is the CPU. You can just as easily heat the device with the screen off, if you press the CPU to the limit. Of course the screen gets hot, but its not the source.
Wow! Did you live in Africa to have a stove like that? Otherwise, I agree: of course it's the CPU and GPU causing the heat! It's quite obvious.

Now back to topic
Hi guys.
I don't want to open new thread for this, so I would like to ask you here.
I also recognized the heating problem on my Samsung Galaxy Note. And I don't have to play hard games etc, I can just surf on the web and do simple stuff on it to get hot (it feels hot for me) and also starts to smell a bit like heating electronics and plastic.
I can't remember, but I think that when I got my Note, when it was stock I didn't recognize that heating issue. First ROM that I put on was Darky ROM 3.3 and it works nice (no heating). After Darky ROM I flashed ICS Stunner and there those heating issues starts, as far as I remember. Then I went back on Stock 2.3.6. and now I'm on Stock 4.0.3 Open Germany ROM. The phone also gets hot on Stock ROMs now...
Hope there is any option to fix that problem, because it started to scary and worry me.
Thanks all for any help and answer!
after rooting and using different firmwares does cause the phone to go a little warm. you need to cut the power a lil bit. i myself tried various different rom and it bothered me with the heat issue. so i reverted back to stock. but since there are new builds coming every other day you can keep trying different build to the one that suits you.

So this means that I'm destroying my device with every new flash?
Isn't that cutting of power bad for the phone?
This phone screams at 1.5ghz, why do people feel the need to overclock?
Overclocking in the long run can damage your phone; is this CPU capable of it?
Also, the technology in this should be capable of running everything underclocked, don't you think?
I had a sensation before and had to overclock that to make it usable. This phone requires no such thing. I would underclock this to increase battery life because I know it's still going to be just as smooth!
So there are my thoughts, sorry about the disorganized manner by which I worded and placed them. Discuss

Agree, OC is not a Mod I need with this fast bad boy!
Even with overclocking on my SIII and Galaxy nexus it still wasn't even close to as smooth as this N4 is without any mods at all. Overclocking is not necessary for this beast. The only reason I would flash a new kernel would be to possibly fix the on screen coloring to be less washed out but even that doesn't bother me.

Undervolted (-100mv) and underclocked to 1.026Ghz, still runs smooth as ever, so my answer would be "No."
And after reading about people getting the red LED of death, I'm not keen to OC even if it was needed. I did so on my GNexus but the CPU in that was terrible IMO.
stock kernel is feel warm when use for awhile, so im not even bother to oc, not trying to ruin this beautiful baby
Simple answer, no. Unless you are a tinkerer or live in a cold weather climate and want a really hot hand warmer
Shouldnt overclocking make it slower? The phone throttles itself pretty hard at the slightest heat increase. If the phone was underclocked it would perform better in benchmarks because it wouldnt get throttled.
Besides I never understood the point of overclocking top end things that far exceed the requirements of current applications. Its not like there are any apps that run too slow. I only overclock my computer after it becomes too slow to handle modern tasks.
Let's overclock to 2.5ghz for the hell of it. We need to own the benchmarks.

I had a sensation too, and when that was first released there were threads asking why people felt the need to overclock that.
The dilemma is that clock speed has very small impact on battery compared to the screen, and the wake lock issue that sucks power in your pocket does not help either. so more clock speed appears to contribute very little to total battery usage.

Hi all, i'm looking to upgrade to a nexus 4 and have heard praises for it's smoothness..
For those who have used a nexus 4 for a while, have you found any other phone smoother in ui experience?
...i can't stand things like skipped frames, stutters etc... this question especially for those playing around with the new sgs4 for comparison as it's a potential choice..
UI wise its buttery smooth, but some 3rd party apps are compete crap and will lag regardless of phone.
I am running Xylon ROM with Matrix kernel and also Nova launcher, phone is smooth as butter, very fast, zero lag.
I can almost guarantee that the GS4 won't be any smoother in day-to-day performance. I haven't found any phones which are better than the N4, and although the iPhone is obviously on par with the smoothness it makes so many compromises that you can't really compare them. The only place you'll potentially find lag is in third party apps as said above.
Stock kernel has the least lag in the UI.
Almost all custom kernels i tried do stutter regularly
To be honest, I never feel it lag on day to day usage but once it gets hot while playing games, it does throttle pretty quickly which leads to unexpected lag on the phone. But overall, as long as app is well coded, you shouldn't feel much lag.
Also like people said, flashing custom kernel will improve your performance and battery life dramatically. Running Franco with Paranoid Android and everything is buttery smooth!
I never used galaxy s 4 but I doubt that it'll be any smoother. S3 felt more laggy for me compared to Nexus 4 if that helps

UI is pure buttery smooth. They have a S4 Launcher.zip you can flash somewhere in the Themes and Apps forums. If you want to have a S4 experience just flash that. Its still smooth lol.

thank you all for your reassuring feedback, might just wait for the alleged 32gb refresh of nexus 4.....yea the throttling issue is a bummer..for those who want an in depth analysis of this nexus 4 throttling can look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abf7nPiUUE8
All modern smart phones have thermal throttling. It's just that the nexus 4 has an extremely low threshold on the battery sensor which is set to start throttling at just 36 degrees Celsius, which in a hot environment leaves little lee way if any at all.
The lg optimus sister phone has the same CPU and battery but has a much higher set threshold regards the battery temp. No one seems sure why Google set the nexus 4 one so low; my grannies flat is hotter
.. I edited my thermald.conf to higher threshold of 44 degrees Celsius and along with a 150mv UV I have to really push my phone to get throttling.
even while gaming eg in NFS/other heavy games?.......any risk of bricking the cpu/gpu by setting throttling higher?

Increasing a little bit SHOULDN'T effect too much, but I wouldn't recommend that. There must be a reason why Google or LG decided to keep the throttle that low, and I am not going to argue about that as I'm not a huge gamer on my phone and the maximum time I played on my phone is 1.5hrs.

I've never really checked with games, most games I play don't tax the phone at all.
I ran antutu 4 times in a row to see if it would throttle and it didn't, that's the only real test I performed.
I haven't seen a phone smoother than nexus 4 on stock kernel. I also own an HTC one and it has a smooth ui, but my nexus 4 is a bit smoother than it.

you know what lags? texting. I dont know why. I use the stock keyboard.
My nexus 4 lags from time to time. I'm on cm10.1 with nova launcher. Home screen stutters sometimes. Opening and scrolling through the app drawer, messaging, or email stutters at times. (I have the music playing and low signal when I notice it.)
I don't know why people say it doesn't lag because, clearly, it does. The nexus 4 isn't up to, "par" with the iPhone UI. Sure, the 4.2.2 is buttery smooth, but I never seen an iPhone stutter, hiccup, or lag while my Nexus 4 occasionally will. Biggest gripe is when I open and swipe in the app drawer; The animation and picture loading lags when I scroll through it like a madman to test it and it drives me nuts, however nova launcher made it better.
Nexus 4 compared to Sense or Touchwiz, yeah, stock Android blows both out of the water in UI animations.
Did some testing with clock speeds today. If you're squeamish look away now lol.
Flashed the 720p extremekernel as I said I would do and started testing the phone with extreme clocks.
Phone seems to be stable clocked at 2.3ghz. Eats the battery like anything though, Ran a few benchmarks, did some gaming, battery even goes down whilst on charge. So this isn't practical for everyday use, but it is an amazing achievement for the phone!!!
Here's some screenies. Bear in mind that mine is an everyday phone. I have multiple apps installed and running. With a fresh install of a speed focused rom, apps frozen etc these scores would be even higher! These scores were done without sd card speeds too as I had to have the phone connected to the pc to stop it dying lol. Also, this is the 720p version. 000p would be even more interesting.
Also took a pic of my storage status. You can see the extra internal memory with this kernel. I went from DoomKernel to this and everything works as it should which I was very shocked about!!!
Thanks to @extremetempz for this madness!!!
Anyway, enjoy....
What rom were u using? And did u have adreno booster installed as with it you would probably get like +2000 more points,
Also great achievement, I can oc to 2.3 ghz also but only when hooked up to mains, and without direct power I can get up to 2ghz,

It is the Xperia NXT V2 with AdrenoBoost installed. I wasnt that bothered about the score either way, more that it would run the whole benchmark without freezing. Mine was running fine without being plugged in but the battery was getting destroyed so had to plug it in before it died (you can see how low I was in the screenshots lol).
Did a test first without adreno booster, then with adreno booster. Same conditions, fresh reboot, and adreno booster bench marked lower.
Without adreno booster .7
With adrenobooster .7

Just tested again with adreno and got 7194. Fluctuating by +/- 500 points under identical circumstances shows clearly benchmarks (antutu at least) are useless.

adrenobooster only works better at lower cpu frequencies..as highest you put cpu, lower are the results..most of my bench are between 1.4/1.6 ghz.

All tests were done at 1.6ghz. Besides, why would CPU clock speed affect GPU performance?

This is my score with adreno booster and CPU stock speed.
Btw I'm using gin2jb, lupus v12. No tweaks besides adreno.

Why has this turned into a speed competition? I was just saying that I was surprised how well the phone copes at 2.3ghz finishing the benchmark. I posted my result as I was happy that it was higher than I previously had but I wasn't meaning it to be a competition of bragging?. Everyone's setup is different and everyone will get different results. Im happy with mine, that's all that matters to me!

I'm not bragging. I'm showing how benchmarking is inconsistent and pointless, and various tweaks can often be placebo. What I'm saying is, what's the point in 2.3ghz if there's no real world gain.

Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't have the [email protected] to push my play to 2.3. But the fact you were able to achieve that is awesome. For the record I know youbare/were excited of your findings and only wanted to share. Just wish some people saw this for what it was, someone who was excited about their findings and wanted to share to the rest of the community instead of demeaning the significance of your findings.

The benchmark is used as a mini stress test. Quick way to just see how the phone gets on under various testing conditions. Believe me, I know all about benchmark results meaning nothing. I own an AMD CPU in my pc and going by benchmark scores you'd think that it was only good for the bin but real world its as good as any Intel CPU, it's just that most benchmarks are not optimized for use with AMD architecture, making the Intel's look better than they really are.
The overclocks do make a real world difference. Many people have reported framerate gains in games having an overclock. PPSSPP is reported to respond well to overclocking too. And as for saying what is the point, you could say what is the point of buying a faster car when you can only do 70mph. The answer is 'because I can'!

Thanks Ozzmanj1. That was literally only the reason I did it. As I said about the battery situation, it's totally useless for day to day use, just an experiment really.

We've known 2.3ghz is possible, but that it depends on your board and it could and most likely will fry. The heat+battery drain is dangerous/unstable.
What you're doing isnt like buying a fast new car, its more like tuning your 100mph car to go 230mph, the engine will eventually explode.
Although we all like to watch a car go 230mph and can appreciate it, there should be a big "DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME" warning for All the kids who want to try it themselves.
I just want to warn others who read this, unless you value your xperia play, please do not try to replicate these results. You could very likely end up with a paper weight.

Ok I can appreciate where you are coming from with that and I have edited the title accordingly. It just seemed like a bit of a personal attack on me at first for doing it. I have also lined the inside of my rear cover with a thick layer of Alu tape and it seems to dissipate heat across the whole cover but how much it helps I dont know.

Alu tape? Aluminum tape? Are you placing it on the inside under the battery cover?

Yes. I have checked and there are no components exposed for it to short out so thought I might as well try to draw heat away from battery. I just put a few layers the full length of the cover. It's a tighter fit now but you can feel it working as the heAt isnt centralised anymore!

Mind taking a photo or two? I might try that even though I don't overclock my phone beyond 1.2 often. It couldn't hurt.

Any chance you could make a video of your phone running PPSSPP at that clock speed?
Like with Monster Hunter, Soul Calibur, God of War and, say, one of the DBZ fighting games, for example.
