Linking contacts in ICS - Desire HD General

Hi all,
I've today installed '[ROM]29-02-2012 | IceColdSandwich - 4.1.1 - AOKP | HIGH DEF EDITION' on my HTC Desire HD and am loving it! My only issue I've come across so far is that unlike my old gingerbread contacts list, contacts with the same name or simular are not linking together. Also contacts from other apps like whatsapp and viber would all link up making the address book far easier to find people. Am I missing something obvious here? I've searched the options on the phone and don't seem to be able to find anyone else with this issue... On installing the new ICS ROM, I've factory reset and wiped dalvic battery etc. I also figured it would be a good time to format my SD card so that was even clean on install. Does anyone else get this issue or have a solution to get 'linking' working?
Thanks to anyone that can help in advance,
James

Click on contact. Hit Menu. Edit. Hit Menu. Then join and that will join with other contact you select
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium

so it will not suggest links as before? This is going to be a loooooong task to do it all manually

No but when u select join it guesses which. Contact you would want to join at the top of the list

i'm also using ICS 4.1.1 from lord and i also came across this "issue".
the funny thing is, that it automatically linked most of my contacts together, but not all of them. in that process of linking them manually i also noticed that in the "link-list" there is no search possibility. so when you want to link a contact you have to scroll down the whole list manually. very annoying.
i also have a question which confuses me a little bit: when you open a contact, there is a point which says "connection" with an "add connection"-button (or something very similar... can't remember exactly right now). is that the same if i hit the "join" button in the edit-page?

[Q] Vanilla Android and Facebook??

Hi Guys
Long time reader of these forums and have used the guides provided here numerous times. This is my first time post and it's a bit of a noob question but after looking around the forums, I haven't been able to provide a concrete answer.
I remember reading about Facebook integration with Android 2.0+ but could someone clarify how vanilla android interacts with Facebook? I am a huge fan of HTC Sense being able to pull down my friends info into my contacts. Also is there a way by which I can back up all my apps and contacts so that when I've flashed a new ROM I can just restore the data?
Again I apologise for the basic questions, but I couldn't seem to find any solid answer through my searches and I'm itching to put 2.2 on my legend.
Much appreciated
Linking Facebook and Google-Contacts works in 2.* as far as the names are the same. Ihaven't found a function like in sense where you can directly point to a specific FB-contact and link it to a google or phone-contact as you want. Regarding your second question, your contacts will be saved @google if you use a googleaccount, for backing up your settings and programs go with TitaniumBackup but your handset has to be rooted for this.
Thanks ^_^ I realised what I'd asked about the contacts only after I'd posted it >.< but all the same thanks for the info
Just btw, which fb app are you using (this goes to everyone) ?
Not a single one I tried so far was good enough.
I have the official fb for android but it doesn't display message whole threads when they are too long and when i click on a notification, it opens up in the browser.
Then i tried fb browser, but that one can't open youtube vids. It tries to open them itself instead of opening them in the yt app, but I'm unable to click on the play button.
the rest is either a copy of these 2, or comletely useless.

I just stick with the default android one...the lesser of the evils out there. But I agree with you in that the apps aren't as good as they could be. Who knows, maybe Facebook will announce some android related news at their mobile event today
I'm using the official one. There is an update, just installed it today. There is now finaly places and when clicking in the notification, no more webbrowser with touch.facebook.com is opened.

Android Contacts

Hello Everyone,
Im using HTC Desire with AuraxTsense 8.1.1 and ive seen a few roms with the core android contacts app. I tried using mybackup pro to back this app up and install it but it says "application not installed". Do i need to download a .zip and use recovery to install this? where could i get those files from either an .apk or a .zip.
Thanks for any help guys.
i believe the contacts is two apks contacts and contactsprovider. And you cannot get them into a sense rom by merely installing it, theres some wierd issue with it if u try to replace the senseui's contacts with it...
I know what you mean with wanting this, but if you're willing, try a different rom to see what you like at the same time? Something AOSP built. If you search there are ways to adb push the stock contact app which is what you want, but that includes the dialer which you also need if you want the contacts.
If you're willing to experiment, try a different rom. I was on AuraxTSense 8.1.1 also, but the battery drain was totally annoying. So I went to Oxygen and I haven't looked back (and has the contact app which you want). Done 18 hours on my phone today with relatively standard usage and, went down to 32%, amazing tbh.

You can try to flash the "Android_Contacts.zip" file that is found on the mini-site I built for LeeDrOiD's ROMs. I have done so in the past (flashed through recovery) and both the HTC People AND stock Android Contacts seem to co-exist in perfect harmony It simply asks you which you'd like to launch when tapping the "Phone" button for example.
Of course it would be wise to perform a Nandroid backup first just for safety's sake!
Sense should allow all that harmonies in AOSP rom too. why dont they~~
Thanks for all the replys. im gona go try that website now!! ill post how i get on.
ok tried that but just got a load of force close messages before i could even start up the app. is there any .apk on the marketplace that would do this, or even a similar app. I know you can get it on sense cause i had it on one of the sense roms that i use. I just like AuraxTsense because of the power control in the notification area.
well actually i dont understand why do you want the android dialer? Sense dialer is what people want. Well at least i want it it, want it so much but sad it cant be used on AOSP roms.
Cause i love having to click a phone app and having my dialer/contacts/recent calls all in one app and just tabbed on the top. I dont care if its the android dialer but this is the best one ive seen laid out for what i want. Is it possible to get the samsung one or a similar app?
Ricochet I totally agree on that. The standard Android dialer app is way more functional and looks nicer too IMHO. Only thing missing is T9 search. I used Dialer One from the market when I wasnt rooted, however found it to be less snappy then a standard app.

I tried that and it somewhat worked. The dialer comes up but the contacts aren't there. The favorites and call logs are populated though. I'm using an HD rom though so I'm not sure it's the same (RCmixHD)
Tust found "TouchPal Smart Dialer" in the market. The main screen is a mix of HTC with Android Contacts tabs at the top. Gonna try this out to test functionality, but the layout is awesome!
Thanks man, that app is exactly what i wanted.

Does your DHD do this too?

Load up the people widget.
It'll ask you to select a profile like favourite, co-worked or similar. Select favourite for now. Add someone to that fovourite prifile by pressing the + button on the bottom of the widget.
Now that person is stuck as a favourite forever. There is noting you can do to remove them. If go into the details for that person it will say Group = favourites. Go to edit the contact to remove them from the group and you won't have the option.
Sense 1.72 is one buggy bit of software! That with my SD card dismounting every five minutes, weather not updating my location and the sms bug, i kinda wish i hadn't upgraded.
(Note to self, only upgrade a month after release after keeping an eye on this forum)

Yeah I noticed that "feature" in the People widget too. Which is why after about the first two minutes of using it I decided that the People widget is useless and removed it from my desktop.
It amazes me how such a basic feature as removing a contact could be missed by the HTC developers. Almost as bad as making a top-end phone and then deciding to put an arse-end speaker in it.

Totally not true. You need to 'click' on the person's name (not the picture) then it brings the contact card and on the bottom you have 'edit contact'. Select that and then just edit the group by selecting 'favorites'. Easy as that.
Oh, and by the way - Sense rules .

This is true. Under edit contact you can change their group affiliation.

Thats my point, editing it doesn't work. despite removing a contact from a group, it will still appear in the widget even though you have deleted them from the group. Try it...
Pick the widget up and drop it on the edit box, the one next to the remove box. Now tap favourites. Job done. I admit its not the most intuitive way of doing things but the functionality isn't missing as you claim.

I did and it works as it is supposed to. Removes the contact from the widget the moment it's removed from the favorites group. BTW I use the widget with the grid positioned contacts (the first one)
Edit: maybe you have uninstalled something from the preloaded HTC software or disabled something. The widget works.

Make sure you are not editing a linked contact, that has happened to me before.

It won't work if you do it like that. What you need to do is go to the People app, go the Groups tab/column (for me it's on the right of the individual contacts tab), go to Favorites, touch Menu, select "Delete group member" and then mark the group member you wish to remove. Confirm and then it'll effectively delete the said group member from the list and the People widget.
I have Android version 2.2.1, updated on December 23. I live in the Philippines but I believe my Desire HD is from Spain as even the box and the Manual is in Spanish and I got the update for 2.2.1.

I use the widget with the grid contacts taking up one homescreen. =) And no, I think he's just... confused. I mean, I guess there is a bug but I seriously have not thought of doing it his way and the contact is certainly not stuck forever as a Favorites member.

No, I do it exactly the way he describes with one exception - it works. I think he can't figure out how to remove someone from a group. He just needs to unselect the favorites group. HTC Sense gives you the option for one contact to be in several groups (which is great), and so there is no option 'none' in group selection menu.

I too don't have any issues with this feature. All I have to do is select a new group or none.
Cheers from my DHD.
Maybe you have some third party app affected sense?

well guys...keep one thing in mind OTA updates are always not the best way to update... i had the same issue so the best way way is since the update is now attached to ur stock rom... hard reset ur fone.. this will ensure one shot update to 1.72 and bam...no more problems..use mybackuppro it will save all screen configuration..sms..contacts..calender entries..appa... and all.... tested on my dhd and now workin awsome...luv it...

[Q] anyone else having this?

hi all. im getting that annoying 'sorry process com.htc.bgp has stopped working' crap every time it tries to sync facebook contacts. ive done tones of searching and tried removing and re adding the facebook account, clearing data/cache. it not a clash with google cos it does it even when im not logged in to google, ive tried official 1.5 rom - no problem there, accepted the first part of update -still no problem, accepted the 2.1 update - boom! it also does it on villain 12 now. have no idea why its just started doing it
anyone else having this issue at the mo?
HAve you tried updating the facebook app
found on google ( apparently you need to backup your contacts first
goto settings, applications, manage applications, all
then search "contacts storage", click on it, then choose "clear data".
after that the contact storage should work again, allthough you lost all data
in it...

Hi, thanks 4 the reply. I have tried clearing contact storage with no luck when u say update Facebook do u mean Facebook 4 android (if so, yep, done that) or Facebook 4 sense (if so, how do I do that?)
This is really p***ing me off now

Hi there,
An interesting cause i read about is apostrophess in names. Apparently the contact sync messes up if you have an ' in your name.... others also recommend clearing "Calendar Storage".
I know that installing a a custom rom fixes all (but adds its own problems )
Good luck!
Hi. Yeah, that was the cause of a previous error but not this time. After a lot more searching and the help of a tech friend it seems that its a sql mismatch between sense n Facebook. Htcs response was basically 'turn it off n on again'! So basically I say **** you HTC and am now on custom, no-sense Rom n my next phone won't be HTC!

Seems so I do like the look of sense but I'm now on elelinux 2.2 special running its default kernel speeds and its over twice as fast as stock 2.1 (4.1mflops as opposed to 1.8) and nearly twice as fast as my gf's wildfire on stock 2.2 (she gets 2.2mflops) and with adw launcher to customize everything actually looks better than sense... screw you HTC

CM7 Contact Link.......

Does anyone know how to or how long it takes to have ur Phone and Google contacts link together on the CM7 Roms?....From what Im thinking it seems to do it automatically...anytime I add a new number I create a contact for both Google and my Phone so there are basically two copies of each contact(I do that becuz I don't like how Google distorts ur photos when u add one to their contacts..so I only add them to the phone portion to keep a clean copy)...but sometimes it doesn't link together.....
I have tired everything that I could think of..I deleted the contacts (both)....I've added the phone part first then Google....that didn't work....I added Google then then the phone..and that didnt work....it looks like over time the phone would link them but I can't determine how true that is or was it something that I did to get them to link together....if anyone could shed some light on this it would be greatful.....thanx.....
Oh and I'm using CM7-RC3 (Vivid theme) on the Evo...I'm not sure if the theme part matters....thanks again.
Delivered from CM7-RC3 VIVID Theme...using XDA App.
UPDATE:
Nevermind I was able to figure it out....I guess when u keep pushing for something you will find ur answer eventually....
care to share your answer? i'm having the same trouble now
am also intrested in the solution, any clue any1 cheers
UPDATE
i figured it out, on cm7 contact select contact> menu>edit>menu>join
voila
