So I realized that if I charge my phone using the USB ports on my laptop, the phones batter lasts much longer than if I charged it through the power outlet in the wall.
I didn't take any screenshots because I didn't think of it at the time, but through the laptop I got about 2 days and 14 hours with moderate use and I had 18% battery left.
Through the wall charger, I get about 18 hours with moderate use.
Can anyone else confirm?
Not sure, but i do feel that it charge slower on the USB port of my laptop. Maybe it have something to do with your theory.

I have a charge-only cable that charges over my MBP's USB faster than any AC adapter I've tried. Charges last about the same regardless of power source though...

USB 2.0 will provide up to 500mA while USB 3.0 can provide 800mA. Stock Atrix wall charger I have is 850mA.
How do you verify what mA you're using? Is there a good tool for that?

IIRC, these are minimum specs for the standards. Could be wrong, but I believe that true output varies card to card/port to port.

I've heard this theory before, but didn't see noticeable difference on my phone to back this claim.
I do agree with OP that charging the phone connected to a laptop USB port would give longer battery life. I have noticed this on several occasions already. I also agree the charge process would be much slower. With my phone, with 5% charge or less, the battery icon randomly doesn't animate while being charged.
That a side, I'm also sure something is broken in Atrix design, be it hardware, battery, or both but something is not right. I can't even charge my phone from a power point with the supplied cable and the plug [UK].
I know Motorola won't admit neither fix this problem in Gingerbread but might do, quietly, in ICS. One other possibility I can think of is that the supplied plugs are the culprit.
Today i charged the phone from my laptop, and im not feeling any difference at all. Its discharging at my usual pace. :/

Furthermore to my previous post, I have finally found the opportunity to test my phone with a Blackberry charger and it started charging the phone from the power point. That means the Motorola UK plugs I have are broken.
I'm arranging to purchase a Blackberry charger now. Don't want waste my time and money with Motorola anymore.

well the battery is 1500mAh the nexus charged pretty quickly but it was 1400mAh i am not sure how much difference 100mAh will make on charging the battery but that could be a possibility.
Charging with the computer will always be slower, if that's what you're using.
I wonder if its the charger. The provided charger has an output rating of 0.7A. I know some microusb chargers I have seen are rated as high as 1.0A. That could be the difference.

I always try to avoid using the computer to charge my phone. It just seems to take awfully long even plugged into the wall.

We did get a different charger over the i9000, they had a separate USB cable and microUSB wall charger. We obviously don't have that setup.
Some phones have Li-Pol batteries and they have to charge differently. This could be why it's taking so long to recharge.
check a tmobile store or website for the new portable micro usb charger. charges your phone on the go and recharges itself via a usb charger the vibrant ships with or your computer. i got mine and was a lifesaver the other night when i needed to leave my house with 10% charged.

I completely agree. Charging takes fuggin' forever. My guess would be that turning the device off helps speed this up, tremendously. But of course, who wants to do that?
That said, battery life has been impressively long, provided you turn off Samsung's widgets. :/

That would be a huge design oversight if a generic charger caused problems with the battery. I'm sure Samsung thought about the user charging with a generic charger.

I have conditioned my battery twice and going from empty with the phone off and pluged into the wall not via usb-pc, took me over 4hrs each time.
If the charger is 0.7 going to a 1.0 would be a huge improvement. The only worry would be the extra heat and problems that might cause. With NiMH batteries quick charging is preferable to slow charging, is this the same for Li-ion?
came here for insight as well, woke up at like 5am, phone was almost dead, 10% battery or so

Interesting...having a 1000+ milliamp charger shouldn't cause heat issues would it for pumping in more juice at a higher rate?
I think there is a serious problem with my charging circuit on this phone. I have no idea if its hardware or software that is controlling the charging circuit but I can tell you that it literally takes forever to charge my phone via USB and this is unacceptable from a consumer standpoint.
I wanted to see how much current the phone was asking for and I was really surprised to see 96mA!!!
No wonder its charging so slow, something is really wrong here, and It doesnt look like a faulty battery. The phone should be asking for 10x this much current.
Can some people post how much current their phones are drawing from the usb port?
If you dont know how to do this, in "device manager" double click on the appropriate "usb root hub" that your phone is connected to and click on the "power" tab. Post results.

USB current, for charging purposes, should be and always be 500mA. 96mA is not enough to charge one of these phones. You cannot burn up your mother board if the device calls for more than 500mA, as that is all that is available for each usb port.
Ive connected three of my old phones and an EVO and a mytouch Slide, they all ask for the maximum allowed current as they should. I do have a wall charger and it charges fine, Im trying to see if everyone else has the same USB charging problem as me, or if I have a broken phone, or if I just have some bad software on my phone.
Please if anyone can post results it will be helpful.

Connected to a PC USB port, the Epic 4G will only draw 380ma. Via a wall charger is will only draw 600ma. Hence why charging on a PC is slower. Simple as that.
I also show exactly 96 mA, regardless of which USB port I am plugged into. Practically new motherboard, so I know the USB current isn't an issue. New Blackberry USB cable (far superior to stock Samsung cables).
IIRC, 500ma is the max draw per hub, not USB port. This is why people get powered add on hubs so they can have components that take more draw than a computer USB port will give.

500Ma is NOT the per 'hub' power supplied, 500Ma is the PER PORT current max. EACH port on the motherboard will supply up to 500Ma, trying to draw more will not work. It won't burn it out, it just won't supply any more than that. If you have 8 ports on your MOBO, you will get a total of 4A of current in total, not exceeding 500Ma per port. If you hookup an UNPOWERED hub to your mobo, the total draw still cannot exceed the 500Ma. If the hub is powered, it will provide 500Ma to each port on it, and draw virtually none from the MOBO.
This is why you see some external devices with dual USB cords, or a single with a Y. This is because it will combine the 500Ma from each port to power the device for up to 1A of current.
96Ma will not charge the phone, it's not even enough to power the phone while making a call.
How are you measuring your current draw? Try other USB devices. Wall charging takes between 2 and 3hrs to charge depending if the phone is on and its current draw for what it's doing.

Pretty much every USB host device I've used can easily deliver 1A. Most new machines can deliver 2A (such as ASUS boards and Macs) over USB. The Epic still charges way too slowly even off a wall charger. It'd be nice if it drew 1A instead of ~600mA. Most other devices use much higher charge currents when plugged into AC.
As for the Epic's charge current, I think the USB driver on it just reports charge current incorrectly.

if anyone wants to help instead of arguing over how usb ports work, it would be really helpful to know what rom and kernel you are using when you tested your epic 4g device.
Im especially interested to know this information about orbiting who is getting 380mA. Im also interested in how you measured measured the 600mA from the wall charger.
Its posted at the end of the OP how to see how much current your phone is asking for.
I think the charge controler on the Epic will alter the current draw depending on how close it is to fully charged . Once it gets above about 90% charge the current should taper off. this is to prolong the battery life.
The Normal charging times starting at about 30% is under 3 hours on a wall charger for me. I can go from about 70% to 100% om my laptop in about an hour.

I appologize for wasting your time, but let me elaborate.
Right now my phone is at 89% charge, and right now the "Power Required" field in the USB root properties is showing 96 ma. I doubt that is an actual measured current, more likely it's what the port controller on the Epic reports as a minimum current required. What I can tell you is that even with that info, my phone charges fine. Seems unlikely that it's only supplying 96ma because I'd expect the phone must draw 40 ma or so just to idle.
What would be more useful would be an app on the phone that polled the charge controller to give us actual voltage and current data. I had one on my old TP2 that was great, but I don't know about one for Android.
Edit: in the time it took to type this reply the State of Charge went from 89 to 92%, yet the properties still shows 96 ma. I think the controller is getting way more than 96ma, so that number is likely bogus.
I guess that wasn't what you asked for either, but maybe it is stilll useful

all im interested in is three things:
current asked for by phone from pc usb, rom version, and kernel version.
someone already reported 380mA. but i have no idea what software he is on.
I'm running completely stock EB13. On my newer laptop with Windows 7 it shows 96mA in the device manager. On my ancient Dell PC at work running XP, it shows 96mA as well. In both cases I'm plugging the phone directly into a USB port, no external hubs.

I'm running the latest Syndicate 1.0.1 with their latest 1.0.3 kernel. My quote above is when I was running Syndicate 1.0.0 and kernel 1.0.1.

The connection is micro usb which is the same as the droid x. You should be able to keep your droid X charger and use it as a spare or a work charger.
I use juice plotter still on my phones. at about 20% left on the battery, it always gives about 2.5 - 3.0 as the expected time to 100% charge when using the OEM charger that shipped with the phone.

A charger that can provide 2 Amp current. A lot of the wall chargers are spec'ed at 1 Amp. The USB port on a PC gives only 0.5 A, or even 0.1 Amp depends on the port or if the PC is powered or on battery. I also saw some microUSB cable is spec'ed as can handle 2A. Note sure how much difference it makes.

The one I have came with the HP Touchpad. So no mine doesn't come with any extra battery. Apparently you can get it here but I didn't personally get it from Amazon:

In six hours last night on charge whilst left on standby, it charged about 20%. Is everybody else finding a similar situation?
I'm looking forwards to the pogo-pin chargers/docks being released, which will hopefully charge a bit faster! If anybody knows how to hack something together to make use of the faster charging speed on the pogo connection then please do share! :good:
Of course, you have to look at the amperage and watt of your power supply. Even among the AC powered chargers, they vary greatly, and here you are talking about charging this behemoth with a measly powered USB.

Not messed up, just physics. There's an awful lot of resistance in a 9000MaH battery, and a standard microUSB (or even full-sized USB) connector can't handle the amperage that a faster charge would require. Which is why most big tablets had proprietary connectors up to this point.
But guess what? Google and Samsung knew this, it's why the N10 has one too, we just don't have the cable for it yet.
Pogo charger is coming, supposed to be at least twice as fast. Don't know why it was delayed, but most likely either a certification issue, or worry about Apple suing for it being too much like a Mag Safe connector.

I don't even charge phones via normal USB on PC anymore, let alone a tab. I've found the charging time on the N10 to be ok, provided the screen is off and also if I'm downloading something it seems to slow the charging down. Other than that it's not lightning fast, sure, but I'm ok with it. And so much the better when they release the pogo charger.
charged mine over night yesterday from 10% to full wall mains, but when the screen is one it doesn't seem to charge just maintains current charge which is a bit annoying

Try turning anything that uses power off (i.e)...turn the screen brightness the lowest it will go, turn the tablet on airplane mode. Turn the sounds off.
I find that helps my phone charge faster, maybe this will help with the tablet.

Through the PC will be very slow at a maximum of 500mA, but the PSU should be able to power it? My N7 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 had 2A chargers - what does the N10 come with?
I am regretring more and more buying this. I haven't received mine yet but the amount of pixels is kind of ridiculous. I would have been happy with 1920x1200 with that beasyly hardware. Saw a review that said their battery only lasted 4 hours because of the insane power the screen sucks away.
Also the fact that this pogo charger will probably cost $50+ and it is something that should have been standard either way.

Yeah charging is slow, though not as bad as 20% in 6 hours! I think mine was charging faster than that even when I was using it. I think trade off is worth it though with the microUSB connector.
The iPad 3/4 is no better... Takes forever to charge

I'm wondering what repricussions I can have if I add 2A charger to the mix and will charge old devices with 2A charger and vice a versa charge S4 with 1A?

It will be fine, I charge all my devices from my ipad 3 10W/2A @5V wall charger. Bringing one charger while travelling reduces the clutter I have to pack.
Basically if your devices are working properly, they will only pull the power they need to charge. The S4's 2A charger is capable of supplying up to 2A's but is fine supplying less if the device your charging uses less.
The actuall charging circuitry that controls the battery charging is in the phone or device, not the wall unit. The wall unit is simply the power supply.
As acruxksa mentioned, you'll be fine since the device is in control of how much power it pulls from the charger (as long as it is working properly, that is). The only thing that you may notice is when you are charging the Galaxy S4 with the older 1.0A charger it may charge slower.

And if in doubt, look at it this way; the phones will charge off a USB port on a computer - this is 500ma (0.5A) - so as long as your device will charge off a usb port, it will charge off a wall charger that supplies at least that much amperage. New iPads will not charge off USB ports, but it doesn't hurt them to plug them in.

I'm wondering what repricussions I can have if I add 2A charger to the mix and will charge old devices with 2A charger and vice a versa charge S4 with 1A?

Yes it does but as the previous reply said it takes longer.
I used the old s3 cable at the office charging s4 but it takes long time to get the battery % up. It usually takes my s4 from 1% to 100% within an hour and half time but with the s3 cable it takes good 3 -4 hour or so.
I wouldn't take the s3 cable for travelling though. it will take too long for me to charge in coffee shops and what not when I am moving around the destinations.
So far, I am very impressed with the charging time of S4.. Love the device.

Basically if your devices are working properly, they will only pull the power they need to charge. The S4's 2A charger is capable of supplying up to 2A's but is fine supplying less if the device your charging uses less.
The actuall charging circuitry that controls the battery charging is in the phone or device, not the wall unit. The wall unit is simply the power supply.

I don't understand why all current control is on device itself why not manufacturers just suppl 3A chargers for all the phones since it can be used for any device out there.

Good question. Maybe because the higher amp batteries have not been out that long compared to all the years smartphones have been sold. They may start making 3A only. Also, companies may sell less chargers if one size fits all. No need to buy a new one when you change phones.
I do know when I charge the S4 with my One S charger it does take longer, as mentioned, and very slow off USB. The One S charger end also gets somewhat warm charging the S4. The S4 charger does not. That would lead me to believe it is pulling a little more current than charger was designed for. But, probably not an issue. USB does not get warm. But, is a good quality one and heavily shielded.

In case someone buys a 10amp cheap charger and ends up frying the phone. Thus Samsung protects it self from dummy users and from million dead phones warranty swaps.
I'm using a USB car charger that puts out 2.1amps and its super fast. USB 2.0 on my laptop takes a while to charge it. Some times I use iPhone charger with Nokia cable or with WD hard drive USB wire. They all work just fine but charge at different rate.

The bigger the charger, more expensive it is. Manufacturers want to save money.

so if i will charge my S3 with a 2A charger i wont see any major change from the 1A, correct? I have the Boeffala kernel and at the AC charge is set to 1,1A so if i have a 2A charger i guess it should charge faster.
The phone will only draw the maximum it can. The 2A charger will charge it at the same speed as the 1A charger.

Maybe it is a placebo effect, but when I charge my S3 with my S4's charger it does seem faster. Quite a few of my coworkers that have used my S4 charger at work also thought it charged faster.
Either way I have charged my S3 with it very often with no I'll effects, so OP you should be safe to do so.
